Freddie Mercury vs Bruce Dickinson (Vocal Battle)

  • Bruce Dickinson and Freddie Mercury are considered two of the best singers of all time.
Despite Freddie almost always appearing higher on lists than Iron Maiden's Bruce Dickinson, I have always found Bruce to be the one that deserves the #1 spot.
I made this video, not only to showcase both singers' immense talent but to show that Bruce deserves at least the same recognition that Freddie does, if not more so.
I set the criteria up but one area that I did not list was versatility. This would be a difficult thing to some degree to show on a video this short. For the record, I acknowledge Freddie as the more versatile singer. The range I would call a toss-up. Power, Vibrato, Diction, Note Sustainability, and Control I would argue belong to Bruce. Let me know what you think down below.

    Bruce almost never struggled
Freddie had vocal nodules due to improper technique, there were many live instances where he couldn't sing middle to high notes and he had to yell everything.
Bruce's power, consistency and longevity is something else.

Bruce doesn't get the recognition as much only because of the fact that queen is closer to more commercial type of music. Simply the factor is all that is NOT Bruce in the band😄. I love both Maiden and Queen by the way. I wonder how good Freddie would be at this age, because Bruce even though went through throat cancer and 45 years of screaming is still doing great in his 60s

That’s a great insight! Metal has always lacked respect, unjustly so I might add. I honestly think classic metal is one of the classiest music forms there is, much more so than rock and roll. It’s more sophisticated, intense, and dramatic, and it always feels like the lyrics mean more. It reminds me a bit of opera.
And yah it’s hard to say. Mercury was at his vocal peak in his final 5-10 years in my opinion. His only seemed to upgrade. The Show Must Go On and Gimme the Prize are his two best vocal achievements imo. And yes, Bruce is still crushing it!

There's a lot of singers who sound much like Bruce but nobody can sound exactly like Freddie, even the best impersonators. Bruce relies on reverb and delay far more.... and maybe a little autotune. His strong vibrato and copious use of it means he doesn't hold many notes, especially the important ones. Bruce fits Maiden's metal as well as Freddie fit Queen's rock, but Freddie was by far the better singer and piano player, but not fencer, pilot, DJ, ++!

I really do not think that we should even be comparing Freddie & Bruce, and even though Bruce Dickinson is my all-time favorite singer, Freddie is probably in my top three favorites. Both singers can have fantastic opera like voices if they want to. Freddie has an unbelievable voice & vibrato and can really belt out those slower song/ballad high notes, whereas Bruce can mesmerize you with his story telling and strong vibrato (1982 Live Hammersmith 'Hallowed Be Thy Name'), and Bruce can carry his vibrato strong and evenly for a long long time, alot longer than Freddie, but that is just my opinion. So to be fare to both iconic singers i am just going to say that Bruce & Freddie are the best singers in their genre, plus both have a kick-ass original style of singing, where Freddie's awesome voice can make people cry, Bruce's awesome voice can scare you while also taking you on a journey. That is another thing that i like about Iron Maiden songs, most of them are like a having history lesson, but only if you pay attention, LoL...So i think it is safe to say that you really can't compare them accurately but are both the best in their class. But again this is just my opinion. Sorry this is sooo long. Thank You.

Great comment but within my understanding of vocal anatomy and physiology within what I studied and researched on the vocal structure of these singers, Ronnie James Dio is a more virtuoso and consistent vocalist than both and in addition to having a more powerful operatic rock voice; Dio can belt with ease and much greater control, maintaining a very balanced vibrato on notes in the fifth octave, with a fully open throat singing in a full chest voice of A4-E5 without any effort or any noticeable tension in the facial and throat muscles. , he has much greater muscular control over his vocal mechanism compared to any other singer I know; See his performances in Chicago 1978, Ottawa 1982, San Francisco 1982 and Manchester 1983; are great examples.

@@luamoliveira3467 Wow that is a highly detailed comment and I’m not sure I even have the wherewithal to debunk it. I do think Dio is hard to beat for sure, but I’d have to think that those things you were saying about him have to apply to Bruce at least to some degree. I think Bruce was known his his immense upper range and being able stay up there with a lot of power and consistency, and Bruce also has one of the best vibratos ever. Based on my own understanding I’d say it’s basically a tie between them.

@@TheGreatestVoice1958 Bruce is fantastic and one of the best for me in general, his vibrato is one of the best and his voice is quite powerful, regarding to Dio, in my opinion he had a perfect command of his vocal instrument through the modern open throat technique in an extremely advanced level and his vowels were very open most of the time and he did not demonstrate resistance to his breathing due also to his high level of glottal compression, and in this context he did not show signs of glottal effort such as that sign of fully balanced compression natural as many singers usually present when it is above the passagio in the chest mix (a level that in my opinion not even great virtuoso and technically impeccable lyrical singers like Franco Corelli or Pavarotti managed to reach and especially with the same consistency) , its diaphragmatic support and his vocal control, in my opinion, was better too and you can see how he finishes his shows with almost no sign of muscular fatigue evident in his speech, even singing with a strong rhythmic intensity like Bruce himself used to do at his peak and even in that situation in that he is using all that excessive load of throat harmonic distortion, which makes it even more complex; I just believe that Ronnie is a more virtuous singer in general, in fact this was even mentioned by two great lyrical singing teachers Elizabeth Zharoff and Zach Ansley, I was even surprised when both teachers put Ronnie James Dio( a rock singer/ metal) in his Top 3 of the best singers of all time together with Pavarotti immediately in one of his interviews, especially because he always hears a lot of resistance from them with metal singers especially, another lyrical singing teacher called Beth Roars called Dio a vocal master and said he was one of the best vocalists of all time and even stated that he was his "vocal God in terms of perfect singing" in an isolated video, many were surprised but within my understanding of singing it's no surprise they were so impressed with Ronnie's vocal ability and consistency in his live performances; Analyzing the issue of range, I did some research on all of his vocal material and even on some informative websites about the vocal range of these rock singers, and from what I found, he reached his highest notes in mixed voice in the song " What Cost War from 1997" and its highest note in the flute voice register with harmonic distortion in the song Gypsey in 2006; its general range varied from C#2 in chest voice to a Bb6 in flute voice register, in my opinion it is quite large overall.

Thank you for the comment! I do agree that The Hitman is a good vocal performance, but I would argue Gimme the Prize is the one that shows Mercury's borderline metal level of power in his voice. However, when it comes to POWER (as well as stamina), Bruce is a clear winner. He has a bigger voice than Mercury. I do think Mercury wins in the versatility department. He also deserves credit for cleaner high notes. Bruce wins for vibrato and control as well I would say but that could be a bit more of a toss up.

Very good video. I do like how you pinned Somebody to Love against the Flight of Icarus, very good competition I wouldn't have considered but it turned out well. Although I still stand by my claim of Mercury's higher level of skill, I do agree with you that Bruce does not get the recognition he deserves, he really shines in his sustained high notes in my opinion. I would be happy to have a civilized discussion on both singer's complete skill and where they lie in comparison to each other. Personally Mercury's versatility wins it for me, but high notes could be a toss up. I am glad to discuss such things if you are able. Overall great video and I thoroughly enjoyed it, your channel deserves more recognition because I genuinely enjoy the videos you post and I think you do a great job on them. Thank you for the kind words. I have grown a huge appreciation for Mercury through making this video and would rank him quite high now. I still am not going to pretend to be a fan of Queen or his solo music, as I am a Metal head and the more light/easy listening rock and roll sound does nothing for me.
For me the skill level could be more complicated than I initially thought. I give Mercury points over Bruce for versatility (Gimme the Prize vs Show Must Go On would be a good example of him changing his styles up very nicely) but Bruce gets points for having more power. Range is a bit of a toss up, clearly both singers had immense ranges and could sing crazy high and crazy low. Bruce's vibrato is clearly stronger, but Mercury could reach those absurdly high notes in the 5th and 6th octaves (A5 and higher) in a more clean and effortless way, where as Bruce typically has to scream in order to get that high. And yes, it's also worth recognizing that Mercury could go higher as well.
After listening to a lot of Queen I personally think his best vocal performances are Gimme the Prize, Show Must Go On, Somebody to Love, Love is the Hero, Innuendo, Don't Stop Me Now, Bohemian Rhapsody, and Who Wants to Live Forever. As for live, that You Take My Breath Away performance you recommended is absolutely jaw dropping.
I'd say Bruce is still #1 but I'd probably rank Mercury between 4 and 6 idk. I'd have to listen to him more to really decide. Where would you rank Bruce roughly?

    • @goldbrickstudios6903
      @goldbrickstudios6903 10 месяцев назад

@@TheGreatestVoice1958 Yes, I believe the two can definitely contend with each other. Mercury's performance of You Take My Breath Away was absolute perfection, and Hallowed Be Thy Name is one of my favorite songs based on vocals alone.
I think in terms of sheer power and stamina Bruce takes the cake, but in terms of technique and versatility/clear high notes Mercury wins. That is just my opinion.
My ranking of Bruce in best singers list has always been at the 2 or 3 mark. The only people I would put above him would be Whitney Houston (not a fan of her music but I do love her voice) or of course Mr. Fahrenheit.
      My list would be:

Just think about it, there can be a bad pop singer and they can still get by. With metal, you need to have some sort of talent in some form, which is why I greatly admire the singers from the genre. If want to get into some Queen songs with heavy metal kick I would highly recommend listening to songs like:
      Keep Your Self Alive
Stone Cold Crazy (One of the first thrash metal songs)

My favourite example is the chorus of "The evil that men do", where the note he sings isn't that high, but as powerful as any I've ever heard. And he does it so casually.

Freddie could sing anything. He almost did sing everything. Bruce is great, but really i get tired of hearing more or less the same from his singing way. The best quality that Freddie had, is that he sang what the song demanded. I can't say the same for Bruce. Anyway, depending on your taste, we are lucky to have them in our music journey. Rock on my friends.

Love all these singers! It is entirely subjective. I personally prefer Dickinson, yet still love the timbre of Freddie’s voice. Personally I prefer Myles Kennedy above all of them - and objectively his 4 octave range is amazingly great and that he controls with impressive breath control and pitch. Some People will harsh on the perceived lack of snarl/grit (to that I refer you to Find The Real) but it is true he usually sings clean, especially as he ages (in his 50’s now ) probably to protect his vocal chords(?), and can easily and powerfully reproduce those epic highs in a Live setting! I also just love the timbre of his voice, whether belting or in hushed tones 💪
Anyways, the point being; this is a highly subjective exercise when you ask for someone’s favorite. If you ask about control and technique between the two contestants you put up here - its Dickenson all the way!

Honestly, while it is interesting to see the exact differences in approach between them, I don't think it makes too much sense to even compare them at all.
They are two very different kinds of singer, with very different techniques and tone.
Both are absolutely iconic, have instantly recognizable voices and are very competent in what they're doing.
I mean everyone has their own taste and preferences, but I think both of these singers are probably the best in filling their specific roles in their bands respectively, so it would be hard for me to say that one is "better" than the other.
I mean, would Queen really be a better band if Bruce was the singer instead of Freddie? Probably not.
Would Iron Maiden be a better band if Freddie was their singer? Also no.

Very good points all around. I would say that Bruce and Freddie are different for sure but have enough in common to be compared decently. They both have clean singing styles, as well as sing dramatically with big ranges. Also, one is rock and roll/hard rock and the other is metal. Not identical genres, but related genres for sure.
For me it comes down to which singer has the more difficult songs to replicate, and I would argue that unquestionably goes to Bruce. There is no way Queen songs would be more difficult to sing than Maiden.

  • @tofiliko234
    @tofiliko234 7 месяцев назад +5

While both gentlemen have great range, enunciation and theatrical melody-conveying ability, I would say Bruce’s skill is superior and his live performances is more consistent, no problem belting notes around C5 for long. Freddie actually admitted himself in several interviews that his technics have flaws, but he just went on with it for the sake of rock. Resulting in his inability to reproduce half of the high notes in their album during live performances for most of his career. Freddie’s tone and phrasing is what really sets him apart, he just brought a song to life like no other, which keeps bringing my ears back to him.
