  • Tal Mitnick is a courageous 18-year-old Israeli citizen who was jailed after refusing to serve in the army - in protest at the war on Gaza, and the oppression of the Palestinian people.
Here he tells me absolutely shocking truths - but also explains why there is hope.

One of the stranger things one of the teachers told us was of 2 boys who matriculated and the White student was conscripted into the army and the Black went home to a township. They encountered each other at a political demonstration, with the White student in military riot squad gear, and stopped, greeted, and chatted to each other, in the middle of the protest, and then parted company. _Surreal._ I still remember that incident from about 30 years ago.

Great work, Owen, glad to see you have this young man a platform! Hearing the “moderate” position he described is terrifying, but we must have “optimism of the will” in any case. Love and solidarity!

You're in awe, I'm in total awe of this young man, he is brilliant, so well considered in his answers. I wish all well and stay strong. DO NOT let the military beat you down. Soldier is so dehumanising. I think I'd respond with corporal, captain or whatever and dehumanise my captors.
Seriously impressed by you. I hope Israel is listening.
    Stay safe

I've seen Tal speak on a handful of channels now over the past few months (well, probably about a month ago, and then again today), and he gives me hope for Israeli society with his courage and his heart. I hope his message continues to be spread far and wide, and perhaps other people will be able to stop and really listen to him for a moment, and like he says, come to understand there *is* another way.
