Sky improves on journey in many ways, eg players u don't know can choose to not reveal their I identity/costume if they wanna be anonymous, (say if they wanna focus on a given "friend"). Unknown players appear greyed out, but as they approach ur location, candle icons appear above their heads. If u tap on those candles puts a lit candle in ur outstretched hang to offer them. If they accept it, u'll be able to see what cute stuff they're wearing. Costume items change with every season, so theirs always something new to look for. They can be earned thru gameplay & purchased from each new Spirit u meet with game currency, or bought with real money.
Spirits also teach u various expressions & gestures to communicate with others by.
If u accept a candle or they accept URS, a "friend" menu opens up wherein u can tag them with a default nickname u can change when u sit at a chat bench together (costs 1 precious candle for like 10 min of chat) or, BETTER, experienced players may open a chat table to chat with anyone who joins them for as long as the table stays their (that's a type of"shared space"), or BEST, as u ascend up the ladder of actions in one friends "friend menu" u will eventually unlock "chat" , so if they ask u to join them (with an action icon bubble over their head, in this case it looks like a player (that's u) following another in the distance) & offer to take ur hand (holding hands icon above their head), you can keep chatting as go. Just remember u will first have to approve the actions under "chat" FIRST, starting with giving them a name, lighting their friend Star to save them as a favorite, unlocking "high five" , & maybe "hug" before u can finally control opening a chat box when ur with them.
I've made friends the world over in Sky, & I've only been playing maybe 4 months & love love LOVE it.
There's nothing that screams "chick game" more than one with ZERO Fighting or need of Weapons; where u run around making friends to run around holding hands with, collecting white candles, discovering hidden secrets & being rewarded with clothing options & accessories (called "cosmetics" by TGC devs) 🎉😂🎉😊. But boys DO play too...
SEARCH YT TOO TO CHECK IT OUT FIRST IF U WANT. BEST GAME EVER, IMO!
      CU there! 🧙🏼‍♀️✨🌟🌠😢😢🤩💫
      😍💕😆🥳🎉💖

I still remember playing this game when I was a kid. I remember near the end, where you have practically infinite scarf flying, I somehow lost my partner and started crying because I couldn't find them anywhere. Eventually my mom, whom was in the room, convinced me to keep going, so I did. And there at that rivet in the mountain, standing just before the bright light beyond, was my partner, waiting for me. When I caught up to them, we walked into that bright light together.
I've never had anything make me feel so connected to a stranger before or since then.

If you like this, you should try their other gamle which is called Sky: children of the light. It’s very similar to journey, but almost extended, with much more to explore, and more game aspects like seasons and collectibles etc. There is also more opportunities for socialisation with other players, but one can totally avoid that and play without chat and stuff, like you do in journey. (I say this because it’s one of my favourite games, and I love the exploration and (simple) puzzle aspects of it)

journey is somewhat replicated through thatgamecompany's mmo called sky: children of the light. it's super easy to get into and has a massive community. it's a little more game-like, whereas journey is more focused on immersion, but the social aspects of sky are just groundbreaking to the point where it's been studied (bisberg et al., 2022, proceedings of the acm on human-computer interaction). it has an incredibly unique culture in that players are encouraged and even rewarded for both exploration and socialization. the music and the environmental story telling play just as big of parts in sky as they do in journey. i've been playing it since 2019, and only got journey a few months ago, but both of them are some of my favourite games. 10/10 would absolutely recommend, but try to avoid the krill.

Still the most memorable experience I've had in gaming was in Journey. There was no clear indication or clue that it it was possible, but conpletely by accident, a stranger and I discovered that if timed correctly, you could use the singing to fly. We managed to skip the entire tower platform puzzle by flying to the top. At the end of the game, when it tells you who you played with, we sent each other messages telling each other how amazing that was. We're still friends over ten years later.

Ive played both Journey and Sky cotl since beta. What I’m about to say is my opinion so take it as that.
I think Journey is waaaaaay better than Sky in many aspects. Sky is way too grindy and there’s too much focus on IAP and they are overpriced. The worst of all isnt even the IAP for me, since it’s all cosmetics only, but the fear of missing out, the repetitiveness and the persistent bugs since day 1 and introduction of newer ones. You have to play it daily or mostly daily even if you buy the pass. I really loved the game and have been playing it for years, but it never really gave me the same feelings as Journey, sadly. I still play Sky cause it’s hard to stop once you have so much invested into it 😢

I can’t imagine playing this without my companion. My first playthrough was so memorable because my companion had a white robe and basically guided me everywhere. We found all the secrets. They played along with me and got me to sit with them for achievements I didn’t even know of.
They even got me in an out of bounds area 😂
At the end, I ran around them, drawing a heart in the snow because they made my journey so wonderful and fantastic and it was bittersweet to leave my silent friend.
I was able to get the white robe and I’d guide others, just like my first companion taught me. I nearly cried when someone else drew a heart around me at the end of the game… the same way I did to my first companion.

I adore this game so much. It's a work of art, and it makes me feel emotions so deeply every time. But that first time playing.. I met my finale companion a third into the game, and we were both new. We learned the map and secrets together. We learned how to warn one another of danger and hiding places. And we crossed into the light at the end, side by side, after almost losing one another. It was wonderful.

This is the last game I put a silly amount of time in on. I was maxed out and completed everything. I never normally do that with games. I have no idea how many times I completed it. It got to the point where I just put my white robe and flew through the levels on auto-pilot.
I did enjoy helping new players discover things though, you can't ask questions in game so just have to trust people.

Like many others in the comments, I also play Sky, and basically all the feelings you had playogn Journey for the first time was how I felt playing Sky. It was absolutely incredible to me that you could make a connection with a complete stranger, and walk together through the environment. Now that I'm pretty good at the game, I take time out of my day to assist new players. I want them to feel as loved as I first did playing the game. It really is so cool. Don't talk about the in game currency though.... It's lowkey wreaking a silent havoc on the in-game connection and makes it hard to enjoy when most of your time is occupied in a completely separate, unintentional part of the game 🥺 But early game is super nice! Definitely try it! 😂

I remember my experience with such a stranger. I think it was in the area where there were a lot of those worm machines that would cut off a piece of your cloth. This absolute legend waited for me every step of the way, made sure i got to safety before continuing on. If i remember right, they even took a hit for me so that I could reach safety.
Sadly, after we left the temple, I lost them. Idk if I came across them again on my way, but I had to continue onwards towards the mountain. I will never forget this one random stranger.

It started with Criss crossing over each others trails. Even in the end, after all that happened, we kept criss crossing. Idk who they are, but they helped me so much. I was so sad that there's no way to add them or befriend them, but hey thats part of the message of the game right?
