      Learning the "hard way" is sticking around for years when you are not getting paid, hoping things will change. You end up burning through the best years of your career and ending up broke at the end of it. Case in point, Maceo Parker has been on tour since 1964, and has a net worth of less than a million dollars. Getting fired was the best thing that could have happened to him.

      James Brown is funk, he is the embodiment of funk, he was born to create funk, he had his shortcomings like everyone else, but he created funk music from scratch, it did not exist (or was disguised in other genres) until James dragged this genre out and brought it to the world as a new kind of music, no one knew that you could play music like that, all these syncopations, the use of 16 notes on all musical instruments, when each instrument including bass instruments are played like drums, hence the slap bass, because Larry Gramm tried to play the bass like a drum instrument copying the new genre of James Brown's music, all these grooves, the emphasis on the first beat of each bar, the mixing of accents, etc. - this is all James Brown dudes

    Three of my uncles were working musicians. One time the youngest of the three was doing a gig at a college in Virginia back in the 60's. When they got down there to the gig they heard that James Brown was performing on campus that night at a different venue on campus that was much bigger than where they were playing. When they finished their show, he practically ran over to where JB was performing. After the show he got back stage and met James Brown. He told him about how his band was playing at a different venue that night on the same campus. He said JB couldn't have been nicer. He spent the next hour with him, talking to him about the music business and what it took to be successful. When my uncle went to leave he profusely thanked him for taking the time to talk with him. James took out a glossy black & white publicity photo and autographed it for him.

    Some contrast before we judge him just for being a terrible person: James Brown, Jr. was born in a one-room shack in Barnwell, South Carolina in either 1928 or 1933, although May 3, 1933 seems to be the most accepted date. His parents separated when he was four (some sources say two) and he didn't see his mother again for over two decades. When he was around six, he and his father moved to Augusta and James went to live with his Aunt Honey, who ran a brothel. There, James was reportedly beaten by johns, as well as his father. To pay his way, young James shined shoes and was also sent out to procure customers for his aunt.

    James Brown was convicted for violence against his different partners....the last one even when he was 70 years old. My idol crashed to the ground.

    • @luciverdad4834
      @luciverdad4834 3 года назад

      James was a notoriously violent, but people overlook it because he's the godfather. He tried to shoot Joe Tex and he used to beat the singer Tammi Terrell. She was a teenager when he had a relationship with her. Poor Tammi died from a brain tumor at 24 in 1970.

    There was no humility about JB. Either that or he was incapable of appreciating and fairly compensating the excellent musicians who helped him to the top. There's no doubt that James Brown was a ruthless, self absorbed and greedy SOB wouldn't give two shits about those musicians who helped him succeed. Imagine the arrogant pomposity to callously flaunt the fruits of the labor sown on the backs of others without adequate compensation for their toil and dedication. What a bad example JB set for subsequent performers on how to carry one's self. Good on Bootsy Collins. I like him even more knowing the BS he endured working for the tyrant and callous diva known as James Brown.
