When I was a 13 yo kid, I got my older bro's ID card and went to a Bootsy show with two friends. We were right up front at the stage for the show, then Bootsy came down off the stage (without his bass) and put one arm around my shoulder and one around my friend's and we all jumped up and down to the beat. Bootsy was soaking wet and his forehead sweat was flying all over the place and hit me in the face. I was then baptized by Funk's holy water. Amen!
Bring your A game on the first beat, make it loud and soulful and powerful. Pertains to life, too. First impressions. First instincts. The One. Beautiful.
Always loved the music from JB sound to FUNK. Over time, the ONE indeed morphed into the MOTHERSHIP. Glad I was around to see, hear, groove and experience it. Hell, that's what got me into playing bass...the rhythmic beat of THE ONE and that sensational flow leaving the music open for interpretation (to fill/scat, walk, refrain).
The one takes the stress out of a bass players life man, you can have some fun and goof around a little but just give that one to keep the train moving
To paraphrase Genesis: In the beginning, there was only the all-pervading 0; Then God Spoke The One into existence... Or Taoism, "The One is Great ; I do not know what it is so I call it The One, the source of the 10,000 things*." * 10,000 is equivalent to infinity in their parlance...in other words the infinite number of things we can see in manifest reality. I swapped "The One" for "The Tao" in the original text (Tao Te Ching) 😋
I heard Bootsy talking to Questlove on his podcast talking about The One, and it basically became my religion. The One became everything. The One is everything that connects us together because we always come back to it, it drives the funk, it repeats. The One became the universe and I found myself having conversations nightly with The One. I am positive it sounds crazy but it got to the point that if I didn’t have that conversation I found it hard to go to sleep. I would hear Bootsy in his Bootsy ass voice saying, “come on, you got to do it on the one, baby!” and I would get up and have my little convo and feel better. The One is the way of life. And I have Bootsy and James Brown to thank for it.
James Brown was the greatest performer in the history of civilization. Look at who he inspired, Prince, Michael Jackson, Bootsy, George Clinton, MC Hammer, David Bowie and countless others.
The Godfather of not just funk, but to all popular music from that point on. You can say there was music before james brown, and there was music after james brown.
I can't remember where it comes from but i always think about a line that went something like: "The only thing necessary to jazz is the one, everything else is open to suggestion." No matter how crazy or experimental you want to be, if you can nail that downbeat together then the band will sound like a unit.
@greatidea7808 I'd love to see that. You know Mike judge would be able to pull some amazing stories from so many bands and I think it would make for so many great episodes.
@@kelvendyson1508 I loved this show so much, I'd love to see it come back in any form just because ontop of being funny, and informative, it gets pretty deep and emotional at times. And Mike judge does such a good job at making you laugh at the person's story, but not laugh at the person, there's a level of respect he shows towards the person being interviewed. I'd love another season that focused on punk, hair metal, or grunge.. in that order.. but in all honesty, any music genre would be great as long as Mike judge is the one behind it.
Both seasons of Tales From the Tour Bus, were bloody brilliant. Im expecting Mike Judge to re-visit this series (at least) twice. With one run for rock & roll, and one for hip-hop. PLEASE! While there are still enough legends left to tell these wild stories.
If you have never played live in a funk band you have no idea what this means. It's also what makes the best marching music sound good. You can stick the One and get away with murder so long as you stick the next One. For a drummer it is key knowledge in any music really. You can make mistakes, innovate, whatever as long as you keep hitting the One.
Yep it’s all about the downbeat… unless you’re playing reggae. Then the 1 is deserted in favor of the 3. It used to confuse the heck out of my muscle memory to go from drumming to funk to reggae and back
Heavy message about having your life revolve around the "1". It's similar to what Jack Palance's character told Billy Crystal's character at the towards the end of "City Slickers". I've got teenage kids, I gotta work to support them. But playing music will always be the "1" for me.
After all these years….I finally found out about…..The One…. I heard it growing up through my uncles and aunts as a little kid but, I didn’t understand it…I like the term…I also saw Bill Cosby use the term on The Cosby show 😂
Bootsy nails it, explains perfectly what the "One" is. Many Rockers would benefit from such knowledge. It adds focus and backbone to an otherwise pedestrian beat.
Before I watch this, I heard "the one" once, and I interpreted as "the fundamental job of the rhythm bassist". Hit the one-beat. Now, depending on what you're doing, you can also hit the two and four, or do whatever, but if the band leader asks you to "give me the one" he's telling you to cool it and stop stepping on the lead parts, and get back into the rhythm section. Now I'm going to see what the master says. [edit: yeah, but he says it better. Because no matter how cool I get, I'll never be sitting in front of a young Bootsie Collins, who's standing, and saying "son, you just can't play." That's discovering calculus level cool.]

You have heard that it was said, ‘Eye for eye, and tooth for tooth.’ But I tell you, do not resist an evil person. If anyone slaps you on the right cheek, turn to them the other cheek also. And if anyone wants to sue you and take your shirt, hand over your coat as well.
