As a former high school teacher here, this demonstrates a HUGE problem in education now...lack of maturity and common sense of young people coming out of college who the public is expecting to teach their kids. And it doesn't matter if they are from liberal or conservative backgrounds either. Want to get OUTRAGED? Demand that our government make it easier for older, more mature people to get into teaching. There are lots of people in their 50's who could be wonderful teachers, but there is not an easy path to become a teacher. I had to pay $5000 out of my pocket to go through a program. There was no financial aid! And all that to get a temporary teaching job for a year that paid less than half what I used to make. How many people are willing or stupid enough to do what I did?

Context for all the people who think she was "wrong"
For context, her kids were learning about the Holocaust. The kids started drawing parallels between nationalistic propaganda and fanatical patriotism. She wasn't teaching them to be "anti American". Supposedly they had read Harry Potter as well which is a warning on the dangers of Fascism. Although that I don't have evidence for.
So when the kids wanted to learn about their rights she told them. She even told them they could even refuse to do the pledge of allegiance if they wanted to. And organize sit ins. None of that is bad. I wish I had a teacher like that growing up.
Instead, I used to be threatened by teachers.
I'm an ex Jehovah's Witness. And I can tell you that my sister and I were threatened by our teachers for refusing the pledge. In fact a girl from my church was removed from the class room because she didn't do the pledge and her family had to fight these bastards. Because they wanted to force her to comply against her will.
Jehovah's Witnesses were persecuted in the United States and other countries because they believed in only pledging allegiance to God over politics. So my question is this : why are CHILDREN being asked to pledge allegiance to a government?
I mean, these snowflake conservatives go and on and On about how learning about those scary gay people is teaching them stuff they aren't intellectually ready to handle right? But they think it's okay to brainwash them into pledging allegiance to a government. They don't even know if they support that government yet. Or agree with it. Because in theory they aren't intellectually ready for that either.
So, do they just pick and choose what they want the children to have access to? Don't allow them to know about the larger world around them. Like the fact that other people (likes Gays and Trans) exist. Or learn about slavery. But then, you want them to know they need to obey the government even as children? That they Need to be Patriotic no matter what? Even if the patriotism is supporting something immoral. That isn't democracy. Nor is it education. It's indoctrination. Which is exactly why it's 100% necessary for teachers like this to stand up.
And resist. Not simply to go quietly along with what the state tells them to do. Like the Germans did. These people aren't just dystopian, they're a parody. Every single accusation conservatives make about Cuba, China, Russia etc....is a confession on their part.
Every single thing they accuse other countries of doing, is what they themselves do. And that is dangerous. Take it from me. I was on the receding end of that.
