- New York, Susquehanna & Western No. 3040 creates a bit of chaos as it leads its eight-car train northbound on Utica, NY's Schuyler Street the late afternoon of Feb 4, 2020.
Guy turns right, sees train directly in front of him, nearly has a heart attack! He sure beat feet outa there!
And I bet he had nightmares about that for a week!
Some people just don't want to play chicken with a train.

Terrific video!! I grew up just one block away on Stark Street. For those "youngster's" criticizing the idea of running tracks down a city street, those rails were laid down around a hundred years ago. There was never a problem with vehicles until "modern times'" when people have become high strung, always in a hurry to get somewhere, and down right rude. The RR tracks served all industry (still does) including the West End Brewery. Rich Lemanski
Daver Thanks for putting some clarity to it, Rich. Street running can be interesting, to say the least. Oakland, CA has a section of it by Jack London Sq. Even Amtrak “street runs” thru there, a couple times a day.
So, make that/those streets for the train only, parking behind the homes via alleyway access?

I lived on Stark in the mid 80s.
This street has businesses on it, churches, is part of the boilermaker road race, and has the saranac brewery right around the corner, schools up the street, and is a highway access road. Impossible to close it to cars.

When i was in Las Vegas years ago i used to routinely catch lifts on the UP local trains. If your timing was good and there was one coming or going out of the Charleston yard it was a nice hitch.

Reminds me of how people will cut across lanes of traffic narrowly avoiding an accident instead of just taking the next intersection and turning around, which in most cases costs you a minute or less

Well, change that. 2000-2010 had the growth rate reverse back to positive (2.5%+). 2010-2020 build in that at 5% growth, high for the NE.
The city has a lot of potential, and there are interesting projects going on the past few years. Getting Bagg's Square back into shape since it's the popular human friendly zoning that got phased out with car-centric urban "progress" seems a priority as well. We should capitalise on (and safeguard) our food scenes. We're about the same size as Santa Barbara, so let's do something with what we have rather than whining about it. Get involved.
Local authority or even the railroad needs to paint big yellow "no stopping" markings on the trains 'footprint' either side of the tracks :(

Ingenious to use a stretch for both vehicles and trains. That way either the street was there first or the train tracks were. Then you don't have to build separate streets/tracks. Of course I do remember street cars.
It's probably a tossup which came first... in the 1800s it was common to have tracks serving sidings for businesses. Cars and truck didn't exist back then, and the whole purpose of roads versus rails was very different from what we expect today.

i think it happened the other way around - but still who would build train tracks in the middle of a city street? my guess is this was done long before modern urban planning was a thing.. don't understand why they can't rebuild tracks somewhere else tho
It was probably before cars were common. Lots of freight spurs in streets 100 years ago.

Why would anyone not want cars parked right next to railroad tracks? Clearly the logical thing to do is to make everything as complicated and stressful as possible for everyone everywhere.

IT IS! especially because it's super narrow. Utica doesn't care about making no parking zones on city streets, no matter how dangerous. This is right around the corner gettin the brewery too. Train coming down is even more fun when streets are packed because of a brewery event

Best part is that the local hospital is building a 9 story hospital to replace three that are no where near these tracks ,this track is only about 1000 feet from the main line that goes through the state. The hospital is only going to be about 500 feet from this track that now sees at least 1 train a day if not two.

I couldn't imagine sharing the road with one of those things. I grew up in a town that had a crossing where the trains would stop and block the road for 20 minutes or more. Thankfully I now live in a town with a bridge.

That actually happened like 5 years ago. The train was sitting a few blocks away and kids climbed on the train hitting the break. It went through this area of town hitting cars along the way. I used to live in utica til last year. There was ALWAYS some kinda drama

Drank Utica Club in high school. When I went into the Air Force, I was stationed at Griffiss AFB in Rome NY (a little north of Utica). A man fell into one of the Utica Club beer vats and drown. They didn't find the body until the vat was empty, and the beer was bottled and sold from the vat. I remember watching the story on the local news. Never drank Utica Club again!

Reminds me of Rogers Avenue, San Jose California. Trains, big trucks full of scrap metal, hobos on bikes with trash bags full of cans, a lunch truck or three, contractors picking up building materials, just a little bit of everything...

This kinda reminds me of those crowded markets in Thailand, or countries like that where everyone and everything are right up on top of the train tracks in narrow passageways. Every time a train comes through, all the merchants and people roll their tents and stuff up to keep from getting run over until it has passed, then they all settle back down on the tracks.

They could but one NY winter and those marking would be gone! I grew up and spent most of my life in that neighborhood. If memory serves me right where the city worker parked and the lady with the silver car parked are no parking anytime spots. Morons!
Back about 20 years ago, they made it illegal to use oil based paint on streets. That stuff could last 3-4 years in a medium traffic area. All the new stuff is either water or latex based, and starts breaking down in weeks from UV or salt. Here in Southwestern Ontario(CDN), they paint lines in very late summer or in the early fall near the start of Oct. By February the paint loses 40-75% visibility.
Now you might think why not reflectors, well first you have to cut divots in the street deep enough so plows won't hit them, the second thing is they don't use epoxy based binders between the road and reflectors now either. Most places it's a water based adhesive, and a single thaw cycle can pop them out too. Simply? Not worth the hassle.

It only seems crazy because we think in terms of streets paved for cars and trucks; in the 1800s the tracks carried bulk freight to and from businesses, and the street around the tracks only had to serve pedestrians and wagons.

The idea of a railroad running down the middle of Main Street is pretty bizarre.

It might seems bizarre today in our automobile-centric world, but in the 1800s it made better sense. In Syracuse, the New York Central's main line ran down Washington Street, about a block south of the Erie Canal. Between the railroads and canal for freight and longer distance passenger travel, and streetcars to get around the city, it wasn't a big deal to accommodate pedestrians and wagons on the same streets with various tracks.
First, this is an off-beat side street. This is not any of the main streets in this city. Second, Not really. Urban design has just become much more car-centric so a lot has changed. This city was a rival in size to Philadelphia and in the top 28 in size for a good chunk of US history. Late twentieth century saw a massive population decline, and now it's seeing a population resurgence again.
This train doesn't run that frequently that having only tracks would make sense, and there are businesses along the route (which have also been served by the train itself), it's simply dual use and open to traffic when then train is not in motion like any trolly or tram or electric bus. There are simple detours one can make if they're going around anyways. It's a non-issue.
i didn't know trains actually used those tracks in the road, i thought they were holdovers from a trolley system or just disused and built around. i've seen tracks like that in a few urban areas but never actually saw a train roll down them. this is wild.

You think this is unusual, there is a train that runs right though the local crosswalks of the Orlando sports arena. I was experienced enough not to wait on the crossing while there was bumper to bumper traffic getting into the parking garage, before the Jonas Brothers concert. The gates went down awfully close to the hood of my rental car with my wife and 2 daughters in the car also. Many kids were crossing the tracks also, some had a few drinks I bet.
What could go wrong there?

Why do they even allow parking on that street ? The railroad owns 50' from center of track on either side . Park at your own risk or a GP-40 is going to side swipe your vehicle !

@Electric Ave Come on now, the railroad would not do something so dangerous. The rail line was there first, but since it was seldom used the city decided to put a street there. The general population is not too bright when it comes to trains. I rode with an engineer one time through downtown Longview Wa, and I was shocked at the number of IDIOTS that ran through the flashing red lights. The Engineer said that it did not bother him any more. He said that if these idiots wanted to commit suicide, it was ok with him. He said that he has hit several cars in his years of running the train. He said that nobody has been killed, but most of them were hurt. Some were hurt bad.
Imagine being pushed for 2 or 3 city blocks while your body was caught between the train and your car. IF a person would survive something like this, I would just about guarantee that they would not "run" the flashing lights again!
He was only going 25 MPH, but it was downhill, and we were pulling 85 railcars of logs. The brakes were already red hot from coming off the mountain.

The rail line has been there way, way, way longer then that roadway has been there. The sad part of all this is that the area is so economically depressed, (and has been for eons now) that the city, nor the railroad, have any monies whatsoever to spend to re-route that spur line which could have been done by re-locating/re-building it about 1/4 - 1/2 mile to the east from its present location so that it could run right alongside a newly reconstructed North-South Arterial route.

140 years ago there was a railroad track. City planners said "let's build cart paths on each side to make receiving and sending goods easier" Someone forgot to update the simulation.
Blame it on the city, for approving the road being built in the tracks. The tracks were there for over 100 years.

Actually, yes! Route 49 between Utica and Rome NY was designated as an emergency landing strip as it was wide enough to accommodate 747s from nearby Griffiss AFB.
