- Don't be too judgmental on the driver. Imagine turning onto a city street and a train approaching? Yes, it could have been handled better, but the Engineer was on the ball and the Driver left intact.
And, it almost happens with another vehicle!

It's a small town. Everyone knows who was driving the truck. That night at the bar... "Hey Steve, heard you blocked the train today with your trailer"
With all the brothers, sisters and cousins in Town...sweet home Alabama
It wasn't steve it was his son he's grounded for taking the truck without asking.
George was in the back of the trailer
Everyone in that bar had the same face. Because you know....inbreeding.
@ so you mean your whole generation
I'm posting this to hopefully educate some people because there seems to be a lot of people posting that it was dumb to build a town around a railroad track, or that it was dumb for the town to let them build a track in the middle of the street, etc.
This is not a "town planning" problem. It's one of those problems that crop up with progress. There are many street-running train lines in small towns in the US and they are there as a legacy of the days in the early to mid twentieth century when passenger trains would stop in the middle of small towns to pick up passengers because the towns couldn't afford to build proper train stations. So the railroads would put a line smack down the middle of the town, usually main street, and put out stairs for the people to get on and off. You can see it in many movies of the period.
La Grange was founded in 1827, long before Railroads were even built in America. Oh, and here's a bonus lesson: La Grange was named in honor of Gilbert du Motier, the Marquis de la Fayette. Yes the same "Lafayette" who commanded Revolutionary troops here and helped The United States of America win its independence from Britain. The city takes its name from his country estate in France, the Château de la Grange-Bléneau. La grange in French means "the barn". lol
Louisville native here. Thanks for the history, much appreciated. Before trucking, LaGrange was one of thousands of little towns with a lot more local rail traffic and single-car deliveries. And I've seen some small RR towns with street running or nearby rail that went to sprucing up their old downtown areas to bring in business from passers-through. I like that the town built an elevated platform for the public for better train watching.
I have never seen this in Germany or any other European country. Why is it only a thing in the US? Shouldn't be difficult to relocate the train tracks. I guess there is just not enough money for infrastructure because it's more important to give tax cuts to rich people and spend a lot on the military. No matter what side you're on, you cannot deny that your infrastructure is worse than in Europe despite being the richest country on Earth, and there has to be a reason for that.
@@MagoLP Your comment is dumb, the topography in this city prevents the tracks from being moved. Including it's part of it's history, they built a train watch tower so people can observe the train coming into town. Also, rich people create jobs, the comments that they don't pay taxes is ridiculous and unfounded. Besides that American small business is still the primary driver of our economy not rich people.
@@dustinryan9671 Your comment is dumb, rich people do not create jobs. People who buy things create jobs. Besides, would you rather work in an Amazon warehouse or for a small business?
Yes, rich people buy things as well but 1) they buy less in relation to their wealth than poor people and 2) they buy things no one needs like a 30 room mansion. If they paid higher taxes, those people building the mansion could fix roads instead. Or maybe they would still buy the mansion but have less money left, which means the government has more money to pay for infrastructure, schools etc.
The topography doesn't allow moving the train tracks? I cannot believe that's the case. There is always a way. Look at Switzerland, they build roads and train tracks in the Alps, a mountain range.
It is just so inefficient for the train tracks to be on a road. Look how slow the train is going. It could literally go 200 mph if it wasn't for the road.
@@MagoLP once again you missed the historical part of the train being allowed through the town. Keeping the tracks there is what attracts many people to visit. Not towns with trains coming through them anymore. Besides this video shows one incident that does not happen often. Also, if you do live in Germany the whole reason the US was created was to get away from European thinking, hint that's why we have a constitution, unlike any other country. Despite what you hear on the news many Americans don't want government in much of anything. If anything I would prefer the roads to be private or owned by the community. Your commit on public schools, its not the government's business to educate the private citizen's kids. Its the parent's responsibility to do so, the usurping of our education in this country has been a disaster. Which is the reason why we (and many others) homeschool our kids and keep them out of the public indoctrination system.

It's tricky enough to parallel park with a trailer, but this one was coming off a right turn so it's not even flush with the road, then he has a 400,000 pound locomotive coming at him, I'm guessing his nerves took over his parking skills.
I have lived in LaGrange ky for 50 years. You would not believe some of the train incidents I’ve seen over the years.
Most are probably caught on this camera!

That driver must have gone home and died of embarrassment!
Max Paxton - maybe change his underwear too👍
Not sure he cared that much. If he knew his truck and trailer well enough to hitch and pull, he should’ve known his first maneuver would have come up short.
Hopefully he traveled home and started addressing his alcoholism. He was going to park there?

I was at that intersection. I was the first car, waiting for the light to change, on the street to the left of the video. We had a train that went down the middle of a street one block off the downtown area. Tuesday and Friday you could set your watch by it
Now that is a patient and professional Engineer.
he had no choice but to wait for the gates and lights to cyce and reset to stop the traffic once more. I'm sure nobody in that town needs to rush anywhere however.
You say that like a regular engineer would just go ahead and jeopardise life and property on a whim
We don't know if he was patient. Maybe, if we turn off the music, we'd hear the train honking the entire time ;)

La Grange, KY
@@Survivor1547 thank you 😊. I wondered where.
They actually moved most of the town away from the tracks. This is the historic district, where the buildings look like they did centuries ago. It is possible to avoid this area but still is the quickest way to get from place to place so we take a chance of getting stopped by the trains. So children count the cars as they pass and people on the street wave. The trains come into town at 10 miles an hour and use bells, whistles & horns to warn people so we have plenty of time to get out of the way. This guy's error was in not looking & listening before trying to cross the tracks, then deciding to try to pull over in a too-small spot to wait for the train to pass without realizing that his trailer wouldn't clear. He could have veered sharply to go straight. It just caught him off guard but that's what the engineers are watching for and why they pull into town slowly enough to stop. We have visitors from many states and countries who come just to see this and take photos. They eat lunch in one of the restaurants and watch the train cars pass by the windows. We love that trains go down the middle of Main Street! It's what makes La Grange, Kentucky unique and quaint! It's a beautiful sight.
It's actually a quiet zone for the train. No horns or whistle's - just the guard that comes down and he was turning before it went off. That is why there is a yellow X there for people that get surprised to have a spot to pull in to.
It's only a quiet zone at night, during certain hours. During the day there are bells, whistles and horns. And if the engineer sees any danger they blast the horns loud and long - day or night! They will definitely get your attention!
Why the music? I expected more comedy because of it. Railfans like to hear the Trains.

Anthony's Trains exactly
"Engineer handles it well" - Handles what well, exactly? He stopped because the line was blocked, he continued when the line was unblocked.
He allowed the traffic that was already stopped by the crossing gates to get through before starting to move again since they were already delayed by the train having to come to a stop and wait for the truck to clear out. A gentleman’s gesture that he didn’t have to make but did regardless.
Well, that's exactly what he was supposed to do, isn't it? If he did it the other way around, then that wouldn't be handled well.
@@briandeschene8424 He didn't "allow" the traffic to go through. A train that long and heavy can't just start and stop like a car. It takes time for it start moving again.
Are you saying he didn't handle it well?
@@LetsTalkAboutPrepping It is the equivalent of waiting at a junction because there is a car coming and after it passes you pull out and your wife tells you "You handled that well."
If you pulled out before the car passed, you crash...if the train driver didn't stop, crash.
When people say "You handled that well." It is because you successfully completed a tricky or difficult activity.

I love how people just start driving once the gates go up, like they didnt just sit there and watch what just happened!
"yeahhhhhh, I've Got time VROOOOOOM"

I suppose they have a low speed limit for trains coming through. At least the engineer could stop the train before hitting the trailer and the truck driver was able to get out of the way and go the long way around. Same thing with the second truck, the driver had a last second change in plans.

A lesson to learn. Don't have a rail track down the middle of the main street!
I may be mistaken as I don't know American warning signs but doesn't the yellow rectangle with the cross me that you should not block that part due to cars turning into that road? as it could block or damage cars turning? so then if this is true, the truck driver was wrong all along?
@@stephenmoir7691 don't think he was planning to park there. Seems like he turned to drive down the street and saw the train and tried to stay as far right as possible. The gates for that crossing should go down before the train gets anywhere close to the downtown area
@@SolarAbyss You are right and my mistake, I can see it now. It's bad planning to have a railway on such a narrow street for one, but i guess you got to make do with what you have and yes, it should go down long before or have an early warning light just for that extra bit of planning.
The town was built around the railroad. Most towns are.
In fairness...
This is a highly incompatible zone at the best of times!
A train right down the middle of the center of a town business district... with a fairly narrow road, and parking in front of the shops. Unless you a a local, and truly know the drill, weird stuff is pretty much guaranteed to happen on a frequent basis.
We train lovers really like this stretch of track, but it’s gotta be a pain for those that live and work there! As an example of urban/town planning, it completely stinks!
I agree. This design is horrible. Situations like these are inevetible.
Haha I wonder if that's a horse-drawn trolley line from the 1800's that's still in use today?
@@theadventurebiker it was an old line from the late 1800's, early 1900s that gave the town the start it needed. Expansion/ relocation is impossible, due to conflicting property rights.
This track was here since the era of steam.
@@NightmareKato That's awesome. I think the track is a historical asset that adds an element of character and uniqueness to the town - stuff that has been all but completley lost in most American cities and towns. Not to mention the train isnt even going the same direction as traffic. Town would have been better making this a one-way road
To be fair to the truck driver , the lights and barriers weren't down when he made the right hand turn but after he turned he saw that the exit was blocked by the train and tried to park it into a space too small.

Yes, but he could at least attempted to parallel park properly
If he would've known the train was around the corner he could have probably but he was in a bad position when he saw it

@@smartyjones7459 I would too if there was a cargo train coming at me in the middle of the street.
I don’t think this guy was originally planning to park there, but rather he was trying to park there after he turned and realized the train was coming, so he pulled his truck there to try and get out of the way. It ended up not working. Fortunately the train was able to stop.
Yeah I probably would've done the same thing
You can see the panic hit right when he turns the corner. Glad it turned out as well as it did.
That is WHY it is a no parking area - for just this situation to give someone a spot to pull in to.
Richard Savage I’d say you’re probably right. Unfortunately he happened to be pulling a trailer. 😬
Kentucky Tim big trailer and big pickup = trouble lol
Nothing like train track's running right down the street in a small town.
We have a similar situation in Oakland California. However, it is a double track mainline down the middle of the street. A LOT more rail traffic. The main difference is that the trains get their own lanes, and the traffic gets a lane each way. There are signals and stop lights at each intersection. Also, there is no on street parking for cars on this section of street. Freight and commuter traffic plus Amtrak share that street. So it functions similar to a light rail down the middle of the street, I think it is cool!
Why are all these toxic people hating the driver when the driver clearly didn't see the train almost before it was too late, the driver was clearly panicking when he saw the train coming, come on guys, do u not see the driver trying to get out of the trains way?
You've answered your own question. It's not that he turned the corner, it's all the faffing about afterwards trying to get it to the side of the road.
I agree with the person above this comment I typeing. The driver of the truck was clearly trying to pull back into the same place that they did or didn't know you could not park there then running about before finalizing the way out of it all is to drive backwards then moving out of everyones way. Even the train
@@Otacatapetl a lot of people are being toxic because the guy turned while the train was coming

I believe the speed limit is 10 through here
Omigosh, that driver, that train.....that MUSIC. Got me lmbo!👍
I am trying to work out why America has trains running through town like this.
I cannot speak for this specific town. In general a lot of cities and towns in the U.S. were built around rail lines because we are such a young country by European standards and this was the easiest way to establish a new industry in an area, which leads to new jobs which leads to people wanting to live in the area etc. This has led to situations like this issue you see in the video where they literally build it around the line itself. At some point enough complaints will be filed and the rail company will abandon the line and build a new one somewhere else. If you look at other longer established countries the rail lines were built around cities instead of the other way around.
history and the lack of care for American infrastructure.
super duper simple really :)
@@neko-chanwilson6250 And a lot of towns were literally land given to rail companies that were then sold off to make the rail line profitable. There's a decent chance that most land deeds in the town have a clause that they can't move the railroad.

Saw a classic Betty Boop cartoon where Grampy was mayor but he'd fallen out of favor with the voters. So he made a bunch of small changes throughout town to make them love him again. One of the changes was rotating crossing gates so they came down in front of trains and allowed cars to pass. Everybody cheered for him again. Funny.
What a wacky place to have a railroad going down the middle of a street with two-way traffic and parking on both sides. I just looked at this in Google StreetView. There doesn't appear to be enough room in the East-bound direction to get out of the way of a train if there are cars parked along the side and the West-bound direction looks highly questionable. CRAZY!
The roads were built long after the tracks we installed. The town probably wasn't even there when they layed the tracks.
did you also look at the speed of the train coming through it's not like out on the main line at 30 or 40 mile-an-hour either it's barely clipping along over ten mile per hour.
so if there's objects and it's not like it goes for miles and miles it just basically comes to the little town to LaGrange for about a half a mile.
at what you're running that slow below 1 to 12 mile per hour you can bring it to a stop quite and see distractions ahead of you for the most part...
@@truckerkevthepaidtourist Yes, I did see how fast the train was going, yet that did not prevent an accident shown in a different video at the same location. What an awesome town! It's so cool that the train goes down main street. I want to visit that town....
I vote the truck driver was hoping to get into that spot just to get out of the way and it was a no-go. If he or she had a do over the truck could have made a tighter turn sooner and had a safe spot to pull back into the street after the train passed.
It was a one space spot in the first lace.
I see a lot of comments criticizing the truck driver for his/her driving. The fact is that they made the turn before the gates had come down. They made an effort to get out of the way of a TRAIN. There are a lot of arm chair drivers here that seem to have it all figured out. The person did the best they could to get out of the way and then decided they couldn't, so they want across. Go ahead a bash me for my comment. I bet the rest of you would have done a worse job.

My question is what idiot every allowed a road and rail combo like this to ever be built? I have seen more than a few of this type of set up and I ask the same question every time WHY!? was this ever allowed to be a thing in the first place?
Most likely from when railroads and cars were used fairly in harmony, and car drivers respected trains.
Probably not the first time that happened LOL ! Nice work and hat's off to the RR Engineer .
Nice to hear march music in the background! Keeps interest up.
Good job engineer!
You could have recorded the sounds of the scene. I thought I was going to watch a parade. Good video, though.
Phil E: Sorry, no offence, for instant, I thought you've access to the Internet in the prison! When I realised my illusion, I cachinnated!

Great music, the US Army Band do some cracking tunes.
Engineer was on the ball and didn't want to have to mess with an accident report. Nice music, Sousa is always good to hear.
Ah yes. The train stopped instead of hitting them. Perfect job
You can see in the video the area is marked as no parking ! ! LOL
I know, it's like "what part of NO PARKING does this confused idiot not understand???"
I think he was going to drive down the road but then saw the train and pulled in trying to get out of the way
@@NUKE-W.E.F. i think he turned as saw tge train so he tryed to park to net get hit by the train
I'm pretty sure he turned the corner and saw the train coming straight at hio so he tried to let it go by
@@chasehavlik12 You just might be right, in which case, under the circumstances, he did a pretty good job getting out of the way.
I absolutely love when the gates go up and the one utility truck pulls out to make the righthand turn and just see's the train sitting there and nopes out. Like, if that person wasn't from around there and didn't know it was an actual train line and thought it was just a tram line or something and you just see a big CSX engine staring you down XD
I actually think the ute driver handled it well.
The first back up he did not stick his trailer out into the intersection.
Then when he realized he could not make it into the spot he backed up fully and got out of the way of the train as quickly as possible.
Whose idea was it to build a railroad smack dab in the middle of a 4-way intersection going against oncoming traffic.
Its been that way since the 30s
town was built around the railroad
Well whose idea was it to build the town around the railway!
I’m still so baffled and confused on how the rail line ended up going right through the Main Street!
More of who the idiot that thought a road sould go there in first place. Tracks were there long before the road.
@@maddogdragonwolf4323 I was going to comment the same thing.
That used to be a standard thing. A lot of towns and cities has street running freight and passenger service. Think, if you were a small business in a town like this in the 19th or 20th century, before the National highway system, you could have your goods shipped door to door without ever having to travel by road.
Thats architect
THE TRACK MIGHT HAVE BEEN THERE FIRST
2:08 Imagine the horror of the driver seeing the train in front of his truck.
I LOVE small towns like this.
a prime example of why alot of street running is done at restricted speed (stop in 1/2 the range of vision)
Good job on his/her part.
The music is soooo, Apropos! Thanks!!
without those train tracks, that town would have never existed LOL
