If this had a pve version where I could play against various skill level of bots rather than other players (and have the progression or renown or rewards or whatever be like 1/5th that of pvp to incentivize the pvp without requiring it) and it was always around so I didn't have FOMO in order to get the rewards, then I would probably really enjoy playing around with this. Unfortunately I have no interest in pvp and I'm currently on haitus from WoW and playing FF14 so...I just miss out I guess, and that's a shame, cuz some of those rewards look really really nice and so I'm just...missing out. Feels bad.

Me and my boyfriend have been playing it very much PvE-focused. Neither of us are huge PvPers but we are both collectors, so this is something we both want to max out so we get the rewards, but as you stated - that's part of the deal with being a collector. We tend to zone in, focus on getting the guaranteed 250 plunder from the quest, then we kill as many rares as we can, loot chests and as long as we're getting more than 500 plunder a match (not that difficult to get) we're happy. When we run into other players we'll put up a fight and actually try to win, we're not just going to give people free kills, but its very much a "ah we died, okay let's just queue again." kinda thing. We're having more fun than we expected, but 1000% once we hit max Renown we will both be done and won't be going back.

As for the leveling system and not playing the game part / not getting rewards.
Well currently one of the fastest and most reliable ways to renown grind for an average player is just spawn, do the quest, clear the initial area, die, requeue.
So unlike what is said in the video - not participating in the game actually gets you best rewards.

    • @Williame526

That is playing the game mode tho. The devs specifically mentioned that if you just wanted renown then you could just do the pve. What Preach is saying that just hiding, trying to snipe a win at the end, is not playing and shouldn't be encouraged.

With the changes if you can reliably get to the top finishes or even win, that's better now. Towards the end of the match if you kill someone you might get like 300 plunder, and if you can win you get 500. I've seen game end screens of people getting 3200 and 4800 plunder with a win.

To make a note about you saying you learned the spells, the routes, etc and it started becoming more fun. Every decent fighting game player knows that when you just start playing (assuming the point is to play, so this doesnt include the people just slogging through for the rewards) the point isn’t to win, the point is to learn. If you just go in to win every single time, you will naturally start winning less and less, because what worked 2 days ago will stop working, and you won’t know what to do. When you try to pay attention to what’s going on, and actively try to adjust to every situation instead of going “hehe firestorm go brrrr”, you will get much better at the game and start having a lot more fun, because your options of how you can play start opening up massively.

I think part of the reason why folks whom don't like PvP are forcing themselves through is due to Blizzard framing it as having a PvE options (see the original announcement) video. I feel like if they had framed it as a PvP thing a lot of PvE only collectors would have put the rewards in their "it sucks I cannot get the PvP stuff but I made my peace with that a decade ago" bucket, whereases their implied "You ca do it PvE if you like" has made a lot of folks instead decide to chase them leading to the whole sunk cost fallacy thing kicking in.

If Blizzard truly didn't want people to just log in, run around, kill stuff and loot plunder only to let themselves be killed, they should have front loaded the rewards. Require people to play maybe 10 games to get all the cosmetic goodies. That way the people who are enjoying the game mode, can stick around and play, and the collectors can feel satisfied with their loot and then naturally leave if they decide to.

Picked up FFXIV since and have played regularly for years. Got my Battlenet account back recently and seeing Plunderstorm's announcement gave me incredible motivation to resub to WoW again. I had forgotten how much WoW felt uniquely and it was a breath of fresh air after feeling burned out on XIV. Plunderstorm is so chaotic and fun like a MOBA in part when you are able to ignore tryhards coming after you as soon as a round begins. We need more experimental modes like this to shake up the norm and try something new for the genre.

after seeing a lot of gameplay for plunder storm, all I can see is untapped potential. I think this could be absolutely MASSIVE for the game, and there are bits and pieces of old systems that you could splash in and really make this almost like its own game. this reminds me of parts of islands, parts of torghast, and I think you really could flesh out this and make it an evergreen contribution to the game. I would LOVE to have more synergistic archetypes of abilities/maybe even include base class as part of this, and I think you could change up maps sort of like how islands were (each map could have unique rewards which create incentives for players to queue not just their favorite).
plunderstorm gives me the same exact "WHOA" feeling that torghast and mage tower initially did (before they ruined torghast), and I would absolutely hate to see this just be another flash in the pan when they clearly have lightning in a bottle.

"so i couldnt do it as the mood struck"
the figure of 6 weeks event duration keeps floating around (without any source bear in mind)
      6 weeks = 42 days
      40 renown levels
the fastes method WAS to jump in do your quest and get killed which netted you 250 plunder at a minimum (usually closer to 300)
      2500 renown per level
this method took AT MOST 3 minutes per round which totals for a total of 10 matches (aka 25-30 minutes a day in 2-3 minute segments) per renown which also means doing 10 matches a day will EASILY get you all rewards, sorry but "i couldnt do it as the mood struck" doesnt apply, also all of this was calculated on the original state as you mentioned they have now buffed it and people in duo's walk away with 3000-3500 plunder (so more then a level) per round without even winning

I like the combat system... against the PvE mobs. I like the plundering mechanic... as long as I'm left in peace. I like the storm... because I can give myself to it when I reach the point that resources are scarce. The PvP in it, though, is causing physical harm to my body because of the stress and anxiety but Blizzard put a Pepe toy at Rank 24 so that's what I'm trying to get to. Blizzard set this mode up the way they did expressly to coerce PvE players into it to give PvP players human fodder to hunt because they'd been complaining for YEARS that there wasn't anyone to hunt in Warmode. That's WHY there's an exp bonus. That's WHY there were efforts to "entice" (read: coerce) Alliance players into Warmode during BfA.
The problem is that PvP and PvE are two diametrically opposed playstyles with a sliver thin venn diagram between them. Trying to combine the two is NEVER a good idea.
To be honest, the best thing they could do right now is revise the Renown system and front-load the rewards and let the people who want out just give themselves to the storm and go back to what they were doing before it launched.

I think Blizz added the WoW tie-in rewards to boost numbers so they won't care people are leaving early. It would have been interesting to see how popular this mode would have been without the cosmetics.
I agree they should not have kept this secret; it's led to disappointment for some players and not just because it's PvP. They should not have made it part of a "WoW patch" as that led people to believe it would be in game content.
I don't have a problem with them making a WoW themed BR, but it would have made more sense as a standalone product like Hearthstone, etc. They really need to make new PvP content in the game more often and more consistently so PvPers aren't starved for content and attention.

But unfortunately most PVPers are assholes. In a way, it is good they got this mode - so once all the collectors are gone, they will be alone among themselves and then the same yammering like about world PVP will begin, because they cannot force others to join. To me this patch is simply a no-patch, delivering absolutely not content at all.

Had they ported this to console, and/or at least left it tf out of the retail roadmap, I would probably have played the crap out of it (for a few days). Might do another tomorrow, since I'm a masochist and still hope that the leggo might drop and I won't even have the pleasure of using it. :P
As long as it is on the retail roadmap, with a patch number indicating that it is a content patch, alot of people do expect some content. Adding a flightstone vendor and some transmog from a separate game mode is not content.
This thing has basically killed our guild (- the oldest active guild on our server, so big sadge). Not because everyone's playing Plunderstorm, but because people were expecting content and didn't get any. I don't play WoW anymore and I don't even like Blizzard anymore.
I preface with that statement because even as a "hater" I feel confident in saying this game mode is a win for Blizzard.
Whether you like the mode or not it is creative, it's different, it's wild. That is exactly the cure to Blizzard's ailment of being risk-averse and stagnant.
Let the devs get a bit crazy and try new things. Not all of them will land and that's okay. You should much rather have them try and fail than not try anything.
    Just my 2 cents.
On a different note, the strategy of hiding until the end of the round is very much ingrained in BR players from Fortnite and Apex Legends, the latter of which recently had a ranked season that rewarded people very heavily for that approach. It's also the default approach from people who are not confident in their ability and are afraid to engage in combat. All in all, it's not surprising that behaviour would emerge.
TLDR: Good on the devs for trying something different. I hope everyone who is playing has fun and regains some faith in their game.

And a lot of folk need to realize they dont do ".6" patches often if at all, and this was just a bonus on top of content they've already got in the works (i.e. the rest of the roadmap). This didn't take up resources that took away from something else. This is just a nice lil thing to fill the time before the next season.

This game is fun - if you don't care about the rewards. Problem is that Blizzard decided to add 3 pets, 3 mounts, 11 weapon cosmetics and 3 transmog sets and hold it hostage behind a long grind with a limited duration and forced pvp. That makes many people grumpy, because all they want is the rewards and there is little to no skill involved in participating - so why is the grind so awfully long?
It feels unneccesary, and I do believe that many people will suck it up, endure through, burn themselves out in the process to get the rewards and remember Blunderfail with great resentment.
I am sure that if there had been an initial quest for the transmog (say 10-15 matches or so), people would have felt alot less like they HAD to play this and rather played it because they wanted to.
This whole event and its reward-system feels like hard-preying on peoples FOMO. It's like Blizzard knew this would be unpopular so they added more rewards than ever seen before and smacked a limited-availability on it to really trigger peoples fear of missing out. I personally think its scummy, immoral and is tainting what could have been a cool, fun, limited event for many.

Start of by saying, I love plunderstorm. Initially I was underwhelmed by the announcement. I didn't see the need for secrecy either. But having played it, its a ton of fun either solo or with a buddy. Fun way to spend a few hours each week getting some levels, collecting and having a blast. Advice I give everyone who tries it, just try to enjoy yourself, have some fun and don't take it too seriously :)

  • @CuthiePatootie

People use pvp very broad-term. I mean, technically basketball is pvp and so is league of legends and Among Us.
But it doesn't mean they're the same game.
WoW PVP is completely different than Plunderstorm.
The best way to get renown is knowing that plunder = renown. So, just do your quests while running to eVERY pile of gold. Only open gold chests, don't even farm mobs, run away from other players, just chase the shiney. Do this and you can get between 700-1200 renown per match, and that's forcibly killing yourself after you run out of gold to snatch (usually by fighting the Pieces of Hate mob which drops tons of gold)
IF you wanna win the game? I just hide mostly. Collect stuff, avoid fights til it's the final 5~. Get skills that let you run away, then just backstab the last player left alive. Ambush helps.

They should scale down leveling towards the end. Making it a soft cap. So you can level up to 10 but the gaps between levels increase so much that you at most get a 1 level difference between strong teams at the end.

      @SupachargedGaming 2 месяца назад

Unless something has drastically changed since I nolife grinded renown 40 and freed myself from the nightmare that is the plunderstorm "patch"... There is a soft cap. Getting the first few levels takes maybe a couple of elites, a chest or two, a few mobs... Getting 8-10 takes half the game. Not once in the ~100 games where my ego took over and I actually tried to win, rather than doing the smart thing of getting my WQ done and getting out, did I make it past level 10. Not in the several wins, not in the games where I loot goblin'd and stole plunder from the PvP and got over 2k plunder. If someone makes it to the end below level 8/9, they were never going to win.

  • @The86Ripper
    @The86Ripper 2 месяца назад

As much as i think being a hardcore collector or completionist is sorta foolish, placing rewards on a system and then *forcing* people to play in a specific way is messed up. Let people open chests and kill raptors if thats what they wish to do. Even winning gives you nothing thus far other than a feat of strength. This could have easily been just as fun with no rewards and you know it. Other than that good concept in terms of experimentation and not allowing addons.

I did notice in my last string of games after the MMR change that I was almost always encountering players who seemingly wanted to win like myself. Made it much more enjoyable playing against those players than the players who you can tell were just there to farm plunder and avoided fighting you at all costs. I did also find the damage output to health ratio to be not great. It was far too easy even as a lvl 10 vs lvl 10 to just delete someone in half a second no matter what they did or I did.

I personally think I would like it for a day or two then get bored with it. It's the kind of repetitious rinse and repeat mode that just doesn't interest me which has been the game's problem for years now. I never got into PVP because it's just the same thing over and over and over without variation, so while I like that they are trying something new, it's just not something that would pique my interest to get back into the game.

In regards to people being upset about it being PvP, because their mogs and mounts are tied to it, that has always been the case. PvP mounts and gear (now also transmogs) were a thing for most of WoW's life. I'd argue that this mode is better, because where once you had to do serious PvP in the full scope of WoW's combat mechanics, which has a decent amount of depth, complexity and skill requirement, this doesn't. I didn't try it yet, but it's only a handful of skills you have to play around with and as I understand it you get rewards regardless of winning or not. I'd also like to point out that PvE is still required here for leveling and there is always duos if you need help.
