    For so long interviews with Ion felt like he was always on the defensive and pushing back. It's so wild to see him, more or less, with the armor off and being open about their failings and regrets, as well as their goals and hopes for the futures. Great interview.

    I've been wandering around Azeroth since 2005, quit raiding in Legion and I still love this world. And I enjoy being there but I don't want every expansion to feel like it always points to endgame. I love exploring, I love just chilling in an area like Winterspring. I want Blizzard to involve the entire World. It shouldn't be obsolete. It shouldn't just be that new area, not just some quest hub. You have a world. Use it. I'll probably resub as I always have because I love new stuff, but I do hope this new saga will be worth it.

      They can't bring that feel back I'm afraid, there's too much bloat and dead content in current retail wow. They'd probably have to start over with just 2-3 maybe 4 continents and take it from there. The problem is though you don't want players to lose access to the old content as in the raids etc. and implementing the old content will bring you back to the bloat problem. Mighty task for Blizzard to bring retail wow back to some form of glory.

    This is what I love about games, different games experimenting with different ways to tell stories. I think it would be dishonest to say the way GW2 and FFXIV have impacted the way stories can be told over several expansions hasn't influenced this new approach for blizzard. Those 2 mmos have shown for years how a long connective story can really be told well. Not that blizzards expansions weren't connected in plenty of ways especially lorewise, but they always felt like their own inclusive stories. I remember WoW by expansions, but I remember GW2 and FFXIV as one entire experience storywise. FFXIV especially, my brain just recalls its story as one long experience, not multiple mini experiences.

And you going to ignore the AP farming in legion and BFA to no longer having that. Could argue this expansion you still have to grind a bit of reputation, but you also would need to ignore the fact that warbands makes all reputations across all characters. We going to ignore the fact that resources are being able to be freely traded across characters when previously they were either not able to be transfered or if they were they couldn't be traded 1 to 1.

    Great interview overall but I feel like the claims about shrinkflation still hold some merit that Blizzard hasn't really addressed. The big one being that instead of 3 major patches we've been getting 2 now which has meant one less raid tier per expansion. And sure they have done a lot of other stuff and have added fated, but atleast for me those don't really make up for a new raid. But there's also smaller things like in the past we did get more zones then just 4 which made the new places have a lot more variety. They haven't really addressed those concerns yet and just keep saying that these are full expansions, but not defining what they think a full expansion is and their reasoning behind making these trade offs.

    I hope they actually mean allowing the expansions to breath, i enjoy my down times after AOTC that let me go back and collect some mounts and such or play other games. the only thing I'm actually still having no hope with is the story. Metzen is 1 man, the same story team that gave us BFA and SL are still in charge, if that wasn't' evident enough by how terrible DF story has been. I don't think 1 man can turn a group of horrible writers into good writers, that just doesn't seem possible.

    Vanilla is a self sustaining experience because it is internally coherent. You don't need to input ANY work for the zones to work, the mobs to be there, for loot to drop. The world exists regardless of what you decide to do, which means you can do whatever you want however you want. I've been playing vanilla for almost 20 years at this point, and it's just a great laid back RPG. Retail wow is just a long and tedious line of chores.

      That’s what I like about classic. I know what I want and I know what I have to do to get that.

    • @OrchinX
      @OrchinX 11 месяцев назад

      Yep. And they actually balanced the game back then. In retail everything from loot to enemy stats is a sliding algorithm so that the devs never have to balance any real numbers.
      I’m so sick of algorithms, I’m sick of weighted loot chances, I’m sick of not knowing what’s under the hood. Give me static numbers, consistent drop rates, actual enemies with levels

    • @treeaboo
      @treeaboo 11 месяцев назад

      @@OrchinX I love Vanilla and for all its positives you cannot call it 'balanced', its imbalance is actually a big part of why it's so good and that imbalance creates roles, niches, and interesting interactions that give it that RPG nature that you struggle to find in the hyper-balanced experience of Retail.

    Good interview. Hated how he spoke about the early Access as it was anything other than a money thing. Also, it's not just about the power or being ahead due to the preorder. It's also that it kills all the excitement for the expansion launch, and its preying on those who can't really afford it, but their friends and guildies might, and then they sit there for 3 days when all their friends are playing the new expansion and having fun.
    And this is not even taking into account all the spoilers that will be spammed simply because of this predatory practice.

    The weird thing is, him admitting he was wrong and is willing to change for the player base, despite it not being as "retro" blizzard and exactly how they were before, this exact thing is what once made Blizzard great, old leadership just happened to forget that.

    I'm not naive about inflation and the rising costs of development. I'd rather just pay a slightly higher base price than see the integrity of mmo fairness and meritocracy compromised by these lame pay-to-minor advantage tactics.

    Honestly, I’m playing a game that was designed with quality of life built in from the start. Hearing blizzard talk about this stuff is like hearing an addict tell you how they’re going to stay clean, turning a new page, etc.. I hope they’re right, I wish them luck, but I don’t think I’m going to give them more money and time.

Something like the early access is an easy thing to get worked up about but he listened to Ion's response respectfully and didn't just attack him for something that clearly isn't his decision.

    Alienating players? He still does it. Dragon riding still isn’t accessable to a good portion of the community due to disability’s, ion very clearly said they knew this and the toggle was being added because of it. Yet, they then go and lock that accessable form of flying behind pathfinder! The people who physically can’t dragon ride are now required to go an extra mile to access a accessability option that blizzard recognize as legitimate.
