    I came across a podcast the other day that was all about how to get better at healing in WoW. The number one tip was to spend your time/effort on improving your UI (Addons, type of information, weakaura, placement etc...) rather than playing the game. That was a stark reminder of the barriers that prevent me from returning to retail.

    • @qunt100
      @qunt100 6 месяцев назад +15

      I think there are other things to. Like I hate having to heal through stupid. Or in leveling dungeons and end game content at times, it's just a go go go speed fest. Heal us all while we tank and dps the entire dungeon, and pull the whole dungeon with every mob at once, in one shot. It's bullshit lol. I never will heal or tank in this game again.
      Like even dps sucks sometimes because I can't even get spells off at times on mobs and bosses in a 5 man dungeon run or whatever. Like how can groups clear shit so quickly. The methodical learner mentality for any type of information, whether it is in wow, or in real life knowledge of importance and all that. The methodical learner approach is completely dead. Go fast or get fucked. And go forward with shit regardless of whether you agree with it or not or get fucked. Like I legit don't even have drive to even go to work or exist anymore half the time. Although wow is still pretty fun. It is just a different game. And I play so rapidly differently compared to how other people play.
      I think the only addon I use is silver dragon and camel tracker. Still trying to find camel figurines in uldum.

      Yeah same problem with Eras too. SOD has turned into a joke because all the retail nerds make it impossible for casual players to actually enjoy end game because you need to have 99 parse to run a 40 raid. It’s pretty silly.

    • @AaaBbb-pl8jc
      @AaaBbb-pl8jc 6 месяцев назад

      I never got into healing precisely for that reason, I don't want to have to download a bunch of addons and configure them and do all that to be able to do my class decently. That's why I enjoy SOD, I haven't healed a raid before until SOD and I'm getting by with just the default UI (well, and deadly boss mods of course). Never used a weakaura in my life, and I don't plan to lol

    • @bondori7999
      @bondori7999 6 месяцев назад +7

      I mean, ultimately, addons are an alternative to skill. If you want to do a thing, but not have to put the effort in to watching the information on your screen and/or getting better, get an addon. But the game is 100% playable with zero addons, so please don't blame them for you not playing.

    I will give my perspective as a new player. I started playing just a few months ago, and I agree with you partially - Yes there is allot to take in and you easy get overwhelmed if you think about all the tings you can do and collect. But what I focused on was just to take in the world and the story. I tried to explore the world and not only speedrun the quests. I red them and and tried to take in the story. And that made my experience much better and more fun!
    I have tried to be social and interacted with players along the way, and I have already made a new friend that is from my home nation. I understand if this is not the typical new player (or im wrong and im very typical). But for how i played and tried to enjoy the game, I never felt overwhelmed!

When I first started, it was like a mountain I was climbing for the first time. Full of discovery and that brand new book smell. This. Addons make up for the horrible base game UI that hasn't evolved with the game/new mechanics. Addons are a requirement to succeed and new casual players arent going to take the time to figure that all out and set it all up just to be on the same level as the average wow player. Installing the game you should be on the same playing field as everyone else apart from in game knowledge/experience.

      @@fremenlemon655 It's all about attitude, "not my idea of fun to grind for things that get replaced every few months" is the wrong attitude for wow. The more healthy way to look at it is achievements or rating. Setting goals (not gear based ones) and working forwards them is fulfilling. Don't grind a dungeon over and over to get a drop, push it higher and higher for rating. I understand you are doing the same thing, running a dungeon, but it's the mental aspect that is different. If you don't enjoy the gameplay (doing the dungeon for example) than no amount of virtual gear will fix that. This will often lead to more seasonal sytle of play though.

    My Experience as a new WOW player. I started playing with DF, a week before launch. WOW has always piqued my interest but was never able to play it until now. I have had a lot of fun. I play solo, been in a guild since day 1 but don't interact with them a lot. Keybinding took me a good while to figure out, and even longer to find a way to organize my UI in a way I felt comfortable. Talent tree was challenging, I play as a Dratchyr and I went from having a handful of abilities in the Forbidden Reach to a whole talent tree by the time I got to Ogrimar. It took me almost a whole year to realize there are rotations and that the order I use my abilities will affect how much damage I do (learned this when I got kicked out of a raid for not doing enough damage). LUST and Interrupt were another obstacle I faced, people kept screaming for me to LUST but I had no ability called LUST, it took a very helpful person to explain to me that "Fury of the Aspects" and any other ability like it is called LUST or HERO because they were the first of their kind. The story was a bit of a mess at first. I had just witnessed Raszageth escape and suddenly Im standing in frozen wasteland with the sky shattered above me, I was shown a cinematic and I had no idea who Bolvar or Sylvanas were or what they had to do with Raszageth. It has taken me 1 year and a half to get caught up with the lore. I'm all caught up with DF and fully finished Shadowlands. I think there should be NPCs that guide you through things like Keybinding and Talent Tree, also add a Lorewalker to each main city and let them tell you the story of Azeroth, from the age of the old gods to current events, make it easy for players to catch up, Im so thankful for Nobbel87 and PlatinumWOW. But the main thing that needs to change is veteran players attitude towards new players, have some patience, don't just kick someone because they don't know how to use certain ability or do a mechanic perfectly in their first try.

There’s also way too much going on in retail just like this video explained as “bloat” it’s just a really bad game.

I quit wow for a lot of reasons but one of the main reasons is they weren't making the game for casual players anymore. As someone who generally doesn't like for games to be focused on the casual audience, I completely agree that the mmo genre is one that needs to be. Forcing people into raids for cool unlocks or any major progression just feels awful to me. I just don't care about joining a big guild or having to adhere to raid times or being stuck in there for hours at a time. That makes the game not fun to me. I want to play how I like and feel like I can meaningfully progress. Things like the FOMO raid achievement mounts suck, and so many people just buy runs and make the achievement significantly less meaningful anyway.
      Maybe a good way to solve this issue would be to somehow separate raid gear from the rest of the game. Make a raid only gear progression system so those people can sweat as hard as they want in that content and it could carry over from raid to raid.

Gear is so much more valuable and never becomes irrelevant, leveling is actually challenging and fun, worlds are more immersive, economy actually functions like a real world economy and almost every item has value and can be sold to other players, game encourages social interaction and team work, in game money has more value, travel is all in real time and makes things more immersive. This is my experience playing horizon xi and I'm loving it. The modern mmo has lost so much of what made mmos amazing in the first place.

Take runescape for example, every single patch is an addition to the game, something else to do, and it doesn't invalidate other things in the game. I agree. Even from a hardcore perspective just recently getting CE with priest ive really cut back on weakauras and addons. Weakauras especially are out of control. You "need" some like super mega pack and macros that cause your PC to start sounding like a plane take off just to kill a boss. Its a bit much lol, Cleaner screen the better. Only gripe is healing naturally has more screen clutter- frames taking up visibility- dying from Smolderon waves coming from under those frames :(. I find it a huge failure in design that rotations to even optimize take weakauras because they dont supply any useful ui elements for your rotation. Whirlwind stacks for fury, Kyrian Spark on arcane... Even your tier set effects. Like... too much

      Back when I used to play (quit like 4 days into DF) my issue with natural healing was how hideous the default UIs are and how many abilities some specs needed because keybinds. You will probably never see this message, but I would like to say your take is 100% accurate for me. I am one of those "would-be new players" that feels deterred by the game's current state. There was a time not too long ago where I was interested in checking out WoW, but after I looked into it I realized it would take a HUGE time investment to be at all decent at the game. I would have spend hours researching the past content to know how things got to where they are in the game currently so I'm up to speed, spend time researching what addons are needed and why, spend time downloading and setting up those addons, spend time to look into what content I should be setting as my goals throughout my progression, spend time learning the meta, and then after all that comes the time investment to actually get my character endgame. Also, lets be real, I would also have to either find a group/guild willing to take me in under their wing, or never get anywhere. I've played MMOs before, so I am not afraid of the grind, the learning curve for raids, or even farming gear, but tacking on all of this other mess just makes the game feel not worth it to me. It would take WAY too much to get to the point where I actually get to be relevant with my character so I can enjoy beating content as a contributing party member.

      i ended up skipping wow and going to private servers because guilds would advertise themselves to new players. they'll powerlevel you and gear you and show you what to do and you'll be raiding in a week.
      or if you want a learning experience with classic wow a lot of players have flocked to turtle wow which is a very slow paced version of vanilla with some tbc and custom content sewn in.
      i had so much trouble finding a guild in retail that would help me and the communities in private servers are so much better for new players.

      With all due respect most of this is just wrong when it comes to dragonflight. I understand the complaints about addons they are rlly annoying to set up the first time and it's stupid that you need them to enjoy the harder content of the game. But on your other complaints, 1. There is no reason whatsoever to research past content unless ur rlly interested in lore. You simply hop into endgame content and there are two grinds (raid and mythic+) 2. The meta doesn't matter at all until you get to super high end keys and it completely shifts every season so just play what you think looks cool and by the time you are good at it there is a good chance it will be in the meta (except ww monk god forbid) 3. WoW is probably the fastest mmo to get to endgame content besides maybe GW2. This might be a problem you just have with mmos but it is not unique to wow. 4. I have thouroughly enjoyed these last few seasons and got the main achievements people shoot for almost fully through public lobbies. Although of course its nice to make friends along the way. I would say it takes around a week to get end game on ur first character and then depending on if you boost or not it takes like a couple hours - a couple days for any alts.

It's a huge problem for people outside the west for this game to be appealing because of that sub. I personally think free trial that they already have should be extended much more. Addons are an absolute bloat, it takes so long to set up everything just to get declined because of AOTC. Season 3 is a prime example,i've taken a break from the game,came very late into the season but i couldn't for the longest time get into Heroic because of before mentioned AOTC. I have been playing retail for a year and i know that this sounds unbelievable,but i still can't find an active guild that's just willing to do leveling or some chill content in general. Don't get me wrong,i like endgame content,i got Keystone master in Season 2 and 3 on Preservation Evoker,i play arenas from time to time aswell. But raids are being so gatekept that its damn near impossible to get into a HC if you haven't played every week from season start. I STARTED PLAYING WOW DURING CATA - here is my take. When I started playing WoW Cata was a fresh breath of air. The only other MMO I have played up until this point was RuneScape. I was so addicted to WoW once I finally made the decision to play it. I played consistently all the way through until the first season of WoD. I then went to college and quit the game entirely. I got sick of it, it felt like a chore.
    Recently, (November 2023) I came back to Dragon Flight Season 3. I'm mainly a PvP player so I've been grinding retail PvP. I've managed to hit 2400 in solo shuffle this season and 2200 in 3s, and 2300 in 2s. It's been a ton of fun, but my GOD THE LEARNING CURVE WAS INSANE. I've been lucky to have a very slow period at my job the past few months so I've been able to play an ungodly amount of WoW (and video games in general). Normally I would never be able to do this, but I was. So I was able to get addicted to it again. But if I didn't have this free time there is no fucking way in hell I would achieve the success I found. I also managed to hit 3500 io in M+ and HAVE NEVER PVE'D BEFORE IN MY LIFE UNTIL DFS3. But again, the amount of addons and other bullshit I needed to get here is insane.
    The barrier to entry would not have been overcome by me again if I didn't have a ton of prior hours in this game. This game is NOT friendly to new players, and it is EXTREMELY bloated. I love it very much and I don't want it to die, but as soon as my work picks up again, I'll fall off. As will every other player that has a life outside of WoW. And it sucks honestly. The game is great, the current state of the game is not. It's over designed and under optimized. I hope blizzard makes good decisions moving forward and helps keep the game we all love alive.
    Sincerely, a WoW player since childhood.
    Thanks :)

      I've been playing gw2 since HoT expansion and still run the gear from those days today. Being honest, the game is still more fun than wow ever was to me, even without gear chasing every new expansion... I don't know... maybe the treadmill he speaks of is real o.0

    Sup Zack! I am a new player to WoW and I do agree with you. I haven't downloaded or used any add-ons cause I find all of it so overwhelming. I paid my subscription this month for the first time and im currently leveling up a Hunter and playing Plunderstorm, which by the way, is freaking awesome. Great video man

    I did a BFD last night and the latest DBM wasn’t working so we cleared it without DBM. Honestly it was awesome and more challenging than something just telling you what to do. I really like some of the points people made here and I just wanted to highlight what would be a good fix (similar ff14 approach):
    1) no addons period, this includes combat log data for wcl purposes.
    2) game ui allows more customization to move bars, move ui elements, etc. to add customization.
    3) the game will recognize your performance based on all factors (not just dps, like doing mechanics) and give you a grade for your performance so you know how you did and only you can see. Could implement a reward system for good performance but this is delicate as it could lead to gatekeeping

    I've done full mythic raids, did a ton of m+ and I completely agree that game's overreliance on addons is at completely absurd levels. And Blizzard is designing those Mythic fights in such a way that it's either you're 0.001% top guild or you HAVE to download like 5 complex weak auras for a single boss fight. It also sucks to think that you wouldn't even be able to kill a boss without so much help from WAs. Echo of Neltharion is the best example: the WA for him probably has more lines of code than the fight itself and it draws a whole fucking interactive map of the fight so that everyone knows where to stand in each phase. Sure It is probably possible to do it without it if you're top 0.00001% guild or you just have to spend like 500 tries for everyone in the raid and substitute players to learn the positions in a fight that is already challenging by itself. The fight is designed in such a way that you have to react extremely fast and without such a map it's ridiculously difficult to make each of 20 people learn every position. The only possible solution is to at least limit the API severely. Leave CD trackers and UI mods, disable everything that's parsing enemy data except for maybe your debuffs. This in turn will result in more adequately designed fights.

      I totally agree with everything, but would add that it's not a 0.001% OR you download 5 complex wear auras because the 0.001% have 6 complex weak auras. blizzard is designing encounters for weak auras

    For a lot of people, WoW is a chatting platform with activities. Making the game too hard is corrosive to people who want to hang out and have fun and push themselves a little bit. I am one of the people you mention as far as being a middle-aged dude with a few kids and a job, so that means that I cannot dedicate the time it takes to incorporate everything that I need in order to be successful in retail . I do play Wrath Classic and will play Cata Classic because my guild friends and I are able to collaborate and be successful with the content without dedicating our whole lives to it and all the things that go into it.

    Started back in WoTLK, played hunter appropriately named Legholas. Had no clue what was going on but I had tons of fun. Became awe inspired by Malygos in Coldarra. Learned you could fight him whilst riding a Drake! Got the abbreviation "EOE" whispered to me by deathwing. Gathered a bunch of hotheaded compatriots who love scales as much as I do. Arrived without a key.... Godbless by sheer luck we had a godgamer with an amazing keyring under his belt, the excitement was of the charts. Proceeded to wipe for 3 hours straight, learned my rotation then and there. Finally bested the aspect of magic. Won the "Blue aspect helm" my 1st raid item ever.
    I continued to play with some of those guys for over 10 years. i'm still playing but those moments are gone forever.

    I agree and feel the same way, the issues listed in this video are the reasons I quit raiding and am exclusively a collector/leveler these days. Love the game, hate the endgame meta. One of the main reasons Totalbiscuit (Rest in Peace) quit WoW back in Cataclysm was because of how Blizzard was making previous raid tiers obsolete, and they've continued this patch treadmill to the detriment of the game.

    As someone with a full time job and family finding time to play wow is difficult as you said. I really wish WoW took the runescape model. What I mean is all content is available to everyone and everything is still relevant and your able to play the game completely solo if desired in a living breathing world and if you want to group you can aswell. I would love to be able to go into the new raid or dungeon solo and see how far I can get the social aspect will not disappear RS as the prime example proves this maybe this is just me but I think this would revive the game

    About the lack of MMO, it's so atrocious that WowHead even made an article that low drop rate holiday mounts aren't healthy for the game. The retail playerbase is completely brain rotted, they don't want anything MMO about their MMO.

    subscription for a 20 year old game thats really not that fun anymore is another nail in the coffin of wow.....its what permanently pushes alot of people out of the game that would at least play it casually if it actually had a business model that doesnt just kill the playerbase more and more each expansion that you also pay as a full new aaa game....guess the approach is to just milk the die hard fans to the very last drop and count on many nostalgia junkies to buy the new expansion and play for a month or two and quit....moneys in the bank while the game is an elitist graveyard borefest..

    A lot of what you've said here really resonates with me. People forget that this game used to be a fantasy world you logged into to explore, see what was out there to find, and interact with other people. The way people play it now, with a do-thing-to-get-reward goal oriented mindset is very similar to how you treat a job. Imagine if you paid your employer to allow you to work there. That's how people have treated the game for the last decade and it has majorly influenced the way it has been designed.
    What you also said about the game feeling like "you don't play the game, you just play the current patch" is very true and I think is one of the worst aspects of WoW's design. It is FOMO to the max and the crazy thing is almost no other MMO is designed like that. Runescape, XIV, GW2, ESO you name it - you can just log in and play through it like it's an RPG. You can't really do that with retail. The game pushes you high speed towards endgame, and when you get there you find that there's no point in doing anything but the current patch.
    It may well be too late, but I think Blizzards needs to be reminded that a lot of people just want to log in and enjoy themselves exploring a cool fantasy world and aren't interested in repetitive gear grinds tailored for high end players minmaxxing with external resources to optimize their gameplay.

    8:50 This right here is everything! There is just way to much to do and FOMO stirs people off so much more than folks may think it does if there already involved with Retail. It's a reason why I stick to SOD, Classic, etc. I can't see myself ever catching up with everything. I can say yea Plunderstorm is cool, apart me wishes it was free and it's own thing like Fortnite for example. Not sure if I like it being locked behind $15 a month, but I like the idea of the game mode for sure.

    This is all correct. Blizzard effectively is running a restaurant scared to change the menu so they don't lose their loyal customers. This is despite 10x customers that would eat there if they made these changes. They should watch a few episodes of Kitchen Nightmares. Damage meters are trash, addons are trash, and being forced to be a meta slave is trash.

    Even trying to come back to retail is rough. I played Legion and BlizzCon this year got me all hyped up to get back into the game. The catch-back-up mechanism (chromy) does a really poor job of getting you into the story, the mechanics are so different and there's so much that I can hardly believe that any new or returning players stick with it.
    SoD seemed promising for a bit. I enjoyed phase 1 a lot. But come phase 2 it's like the sweats have emerged from their caves. Want to get to 40? Better be ready to dungeon spam and grind for 3 days then do all the quests you skipped to farm gold! That shook me off before hitting level 30. Oh well, I wanted to finish Elden Ring anyways. Just wanted to give my 2 cents as someone who loved the game since 2004

    As someone who is a part of that middle 80%, and despite that fact that I may not agree with most of Asmongold's life and hygiene choices, I do agree with his take.
    I was really excited when I learned what Season of Discovery was, since Classic++ always sounded like the version of WoW I always wanted. But when I learned that you needed logs of past performance to get into groups, that immediately killed any interest for me. Get rid of the add-ons, please!! All of them! And more of the middle 80% might get excited for the game.
