Van Halen's impact was seismic. I don't think the band truly knew what it was like for us - obsessively playing the albums, drawing the VH emblem everywhere, talking about them constantly. David Lee Roth knew what it was like for people because he has this biggest ego in music history he was full of himself before he was famous. I'm just tired of having Eddie Van Halen shoved down my throat as the be all and end all of guitar player's that's what turned me off about him. He didn't invent what he did he tweaked it and added his own things to it. I like guitar but get tired really quick with those gimmicks.

My father took me to a VH concert in '81 when I was 14. He was a big man at 6'5 260. I will never forget him asking me during that great concert " do I look out of place "? I said hell no dad. We both enjoyed Eddie doing his running kicks on the stacked amps during his solo. R.I.P. CD
I’m 55 now, a product of Van Halen indoctrination at an impressionable 14 years of age. Van Halen became my musical drug of choice as every time one of the local DJ’s announced the release of a new Van Halen album, I could think of nothing greater in life (maybe next to scoring a copy of Playboy magazine). The day of the album release, I was hightailing it to the local music store to get my copy. God, life was so wonderful back then. Long live the music and legacy of the mighty Van Halen.
GREAT...I WILL NOW CONTEMPLATE THIS IDEA FOR A FEW HOURS......I SEE IT IN MY MIND, HE IS DRESSED IN A TUX, JOKER PAINTED FACE...IT'S SO COOL ,I MAY NEVER COME BACK TO REALITY. ..
I was really surprised when Dave's radio talk show wasn't a success (when he took over for Howard Stern). I thought (and was hoping) that he was going to be a HUGE success as a radio talk show host.
Diamond Dave is a living legend. Van Halen is a legendary band. Cannot dispute the contributions DLR & VH made to culture, music, fashion, and the industry. They transformed and defined the period. Period.
GTR The fashion may be in a hiatus, but the music lives on. You can listen to ANY Van Halen’s song today and it’s still fresh & awesome. As for fashion, just you wait, the big hair and tight pants will come back. Fashion goes in cycle.
@@Ali74 DLR’s vocals are damn great on record. Sure it’s different than Plant, Mercury, Daltrey, Gillan, Coverdale, Halford and all the other vocalists with crazy high vocals but he was damn good. His live performances are shite though, the karate kicks are cool and all but the vocals aren’t.
Sammy's a bigger narcissist . After his VOA show in Anchorage he threw a big hissy fit when a small amount of tickets didn't sell and told the manager he'd never play in Alaska ever again and MFer never did . He say he only never sold out in New York . And I'm pretty sure he said he sold out in his VOA tour
What a life Diamond Dave has lived. The greatest frontman in rock history teamed with the greatest guitarist in rock history, VH saved rock and roll, I too graduated in '85 sitting on my parents front porch with my best friend shocked and horrified hearing the news on MTV that Dave has left the band... girls wanted to be with him and guys wanted to be him...a brilliant Lyricist also with a spirit for adventure...the Amazon, Everest...being a NYC EMT...on and on...I Love Diamond Dave!!!!
I hear you. I was in my mid twenties when Van Halen hit the scene, and when I heard that first album I nearly wept because the frigging disco atmosphere was like a pandemic. I knew right then and there Rock had been rescued!
Well David Lee Roth is almost 70 years old. He's lived a more interesting life than any of us ever will most likely so cut him a break. They put out some of the best music ever in the late 70s and early 80s
Lol. I think he meant contribute. If you "made a donation to a contribution" then it's a noun. But "I contribute as much as I can to the cause" contribute is a verb. Your right but it's close enough to where it's eh, whatever.
Dude when I was 7, Ventura CA. I made my sister take me to the record store and by the first album. I still have it! Still playin drums and rocking 41 yrs later because of DLR. Thank you for your contribution to our lives Dave 👍🏽
20 years?! By the time GnR came along, nobody wanted to look like Roth. Less when the Grunge movement came along. Van Halen's "impact" was like 7 years. Maybe less? By 1985 Roth was gone and VH w Hagar was a joke.
gymnassfan Every great guitarist now a days is emulating Eddie Van Halen?! What? Guitar music is not mainstream anymore and the ones doing it in the indie circles sure as hell sound nothing like Van Halen dude! Are you 60 and lost touch since 1989?!
Thank you Diamond Dave for decades of the best rock & roll and being the best frontman of all time. I saw Van Halen three times in concert and theres no other experience like it. Incredibly talented . Happy retirement, thanks for the memories and much love💋💋
There's no point in picking sides about Dave or Sammy. They are two separate bands from two separate eras. I love both of them. But there is no comparison because the band was totally different after 1984. Just enjoy both worlds.
Used to know a little ditty.., Went a little something like this;; "If we could have the best of both worlds.., A little heaven right here on earth., woo !!¡!!"
@nikto45 He used to be much calmer and more focused and didn't laugh/smile as much in his earlier interviews (up until 1991/1992 or so). Starting in about 1994, he changed completely.,
I brought Van Halen's first album to art class in High School when it was released in 1978. I had people thanking me for years for introducing them to Van Halen that day... Went to may VH concerts and my dates loved it... and me...
'Diamond Dave' was the most in your face, energetic and outrageous frontman ever to hog the mic for Van Halen!!! It was good while it lasted!!! Your solo effort also rocked!!! Thank you!!!
Love the attitude and confidence that David Lee exudes . He is not being cocky he’s keeping it real. My favorite line of his which I use all the time to my blackjack guests are , “yeah we’re running a little bit hot tonight”. 👍 Thanks Dave !!!
What a character Roth is brilliant ,shame we're stuck with a generation of "stars " who appear more like accountants . Proper star wattage charisma ,chock block full of opinion , anecdotes ... You don't even have to love Halen to find him immensely watchable . Great front man 👍
I saw the Sky Scraper tour too, it was one of the most entertaining rock concerts I ever saw, Dave is a great showman. Sheehan was not there, but the rest of the band including Steve Vai was there , the subsitute bass player was good and did his job, and they played great, everyone had a great time.
Me too! But what I did not realize is how much that song was influenced by Billy Cobham. Check out this shit from 1973 ruclips.net/video/unxshBHfVsY/видео.html . VH put their spin on this vibe and DLR jizzed his sugar all over it.
@@onetoomusic I've always been aware of Cobham, but never really listened to him much. I was a Van Halen fan before I got into jazz, and I respected their chops the deeper into the jazz/fusion world I went. But this is, at times, a note for note "tribute." I'm also reminded of Jeff Beck's There and Back, but that's probably because Jan Hammer is on it.
I will always remember you guys in the days when we were all young and the rock and roll was awesome. Thank you for your contribution David Lee Roth and of course Van Halen.
An eccentric and very articulate person like DLR speaks about his artistry and life experience. People of average to low intelligence label him nuts. Thats one of the flaws of humanity. People are dumbed down.
Amen. He answered Joe twice. First, all the people we played for shaped us, made us more versatile. So when we started putting out original stuuf, we knew who to target and when. We were a band that everyone could relate to. Second, yeah, James Brown and Jagger influenced us. What I did was nothing new and you see it to this day. Yeah, we knew the impact, but we knew it wasn't something WE started originally. Hey never mentioned playing for black people, but one of Van Halen's greatest hits: "Wild Thang" by Tone Loc, the "Jaime's crying" sample. There's your impact.
i don't label him as nuts i label him as fucking annoying if he was just an ordinary guy you'd want to punch him in the face every time he made that ridiculous laugh at his own stupid jokes fucking idiot
I have a whole new regard for Dave after his appearance on JRE. His intellect and humanity comes shining thru time and time again with every question. I wish him well.
That's a great analogy.....both were "way out there" in interviews....but both were/are extremely intelligent guys just thinking a little differently than the norm. (Plus the coke ;-) )
One of the greatest lessons about musicology explained in a simple way. I cannot praise this radio show enough, i´m a huge fan,, keep up the good work guys and warm regards from Portugal.
Dave is right. Those songs all were a little different. Black, latino, asian, white everyone knows a good Van Halen song. Dave is all over the place but he has alot of different interests
DLR is an ultimate jester. Not a clown, not a joker. Intelligent smart and unabashedly open. I always adored him. First it was mostly for his looks and his testosterone levels. That was before I realize what an intelligent well read man he is. Totally unique and one and only. Smart as a whip. Funny as hell yet I do believe he is an emotional and sensitive man. Thank you for making my 80's the best time of my life. Respect, sir!
Well said. You can see that in Rohan’s interview format ( this long no limit ) . Any interview you would see of him in the day, it was a sound bite. He’d have 2 minutes to talk at most. I never new he had this awareness. I can see that now. That & a work ethic gets you a long way.
@@timodonnell542 The '86 interview with Paula Yates is his BEST appearance ever I think because he's just natural - some of the time- she interrupts his flow and he drops the shtick routine. It's just great. I wish I could find the whole thing.
His laugh is sometimes uncomfortable as with Tom Cruise, but what a great guest. He's experienced life to the fullest and knows what he's talking about.
@Shaken not stirred Hilarious, you should get your own show. You would mesmerize the crowd with your keen wit and unrestrained originality. Did your Mom help you come up with that one? Really boring stuff. Your troll game is extra weak.
Robert Plant story you'll like: A friend of mine works for the gov. I'm not sure of the exact location he was at when this happened, embassy maybe??? Anyway, it's where people who want to come to the US to visit have to go before they get on their planes or ships to come here. There's 2 lines, a VIP line and a regular Joe line. Plant waited with the regular people. When he got up to the desk, this girl who was maybe 20- having no clue to who he was- asked what he did. "I"m a musician." "Oh, anyone I've heard of?" "Led Zeppelin." "We're ya any good?" "I guess we were ok." "How many records did ya sell?" "I don't know. 20 million maybe." Obviously I'm not sure of the exact words, but on and on she went, becoming more and more of a cunt towards Plant as the conversation went on. Finally she did let him through though. Plant was a class act the whole way. Somehow her manager got wind of how he treated him and blew his stack. So the manager tries to go make it up to Plant, and Plant is a good guy to him too. My buddy, who wasn't a big fan of Led Zeppelin before this, really became a big fan of Plant that day. For what it's worth, he's got stories of other people- Madonna is one I remember- where those people are nothing but assholes. If he had a dollar for every time someone said "How can you not know who I am? Do you live under a rock!!?!?!?" (or some form of that statement) he'd be a millionaire.
@@dannyd5697 whats strange about your story is the 20yo girl was asking him all in past tense"were you any good?""how many records did you sell" (still sell) and why would she assume he was not in a band anymore(he is) and making music(he is ) and selling albums? Just because he is old? maybe this is some urban legend type story passed around, like the fishing stories where the minnow ends up a 20lb tuna? lolhmf
@@packman5906 - What's strange about your reading comprehension is I stated I didn't know the exact words of the conversation. The basic point that Robert Plant waited in the average Joe line, then dealt admirably with some kid who was a total cunt to him stands. My friend is back in the US, but for awhile either he or others he worked with dealt with all kinds of those types of people. It's not like he'd tell me about them unless they were out of the norm positive, like Plant or Harrison Ford- or brutal, like Madonna. I told the story because the OP wanted Robert Plant to be a guest of Joe's. I figured he'd like it. I didn't realize someone was going to over analyze it and get all uptight that I didn't remember 100% of the exact words. I do want to congratulate you. I've relayed that story a few times. No one has ever cried over it until you. Happy tears to ya. You have a great day.
@@jaysmith3095 None of the rest of the band would have been shit without the ungodly talent of Eddie Van Halen and Diamond Dave would have been a circus side show without him whether he admits to it or not.
They have very different visions for the music and the band. And both are wanting to go in their own directions. That leads to the band being pulled apart. Plus Dave and Eddie just do not get along very well, and never have.
I don't think so. He's easily the beat rock frontman of all time. Not singer. Frontman. The JRE is not 80s Van Halen make no mistake. Do your school work.
Gary Busey analogy is accurate. All the lifelong VH fans worship him to the point where they are willing to take all his barely coherent conversational segues and right turns as genius. Granted, perhaps that’s genius behavior - there’s no doubt VH was one of the greatest of all time with DLR up front, BUT his conversational dialogue is so abstract and hyper active that it’s almost unbearable to listen to. Was hoping for so much more from this interview. He is not capable of answering a damn question.
David Lee Roth owes a lot of his image and the things he did on stage to the lead singer of Black Oak Arkansas Jim 'Dandy" . The clothes, the kicks in the air, -although the music was way different musically, it was bar room/ party music being played on a grand scale {stadiums}. Even down to being shirtless on stage with long blonde hair. This is NOT a knock on Dave, but I think it would've been nice of Dave to mention that... Jim 'dandy' Mangrum was an obviously huge influence on Dave's Van Halen stage image...
But Dave never caves in to the "did you know YOUR impact" question because he knew his act wasn't createx by him. He knew he took from others and mentiond Janes Brown and Jagger.
you don't get to lead a band that Ruled the World and be a regular from suburbia driving a Prius, Diamond Dave had to be wired this way, he has the energy of 7 and a half men and 4 teenage girls in him!!!
Diamond Dave has some serious depth to him. Human wisdom that applies to Anything and Everything. Just Listen to him. And Rogan is a skilled and wonderful interviewer among his many addition talents and abilities. Respect.

My father took me to a VH concert in '81 when I was 14. He was a big man at 6'5 260. I will never forget him asking me during that great concert " do I look out of place "? I said hell no dad.
We both enjoyed Eddie doing his running kicks on the stacked amps during his solo.

I can totally relate back in those days was about Work hard Party Hard with Kick Ass Music and Eddie Van Halen was Guitar God
First 3 Van Halen albums with DLR are sonic bombs of the greatest kind.
First 6, I'd say.
First four for me.
Love the first 3, but Fair Warning is easily as good and, in hindsight, may be my favorite VH album.
Fair Warning is definitely very good.
Agreed. I like all the DLR VH albums. High water mark for me would be Women and Children First.
Roth should have been the next joker in Batman. He's definitely got the attitude and face expressions for the role. 😆
He'd be perfect just as he is.
I thought (and was hoping) that he was going to be a HUGE success as a radio talk show host.
except that David Roth is as PAINFULLY ugly as newly hatched baby bird, as in very hard to look at
@@genexrollins that is EXACTLY why he would be a great JOKER...you would love to hate him..
Diamond Dave is a living legend. Van Halen is a legendary band. Cannot dispute the contributions DLR & VH made to culture, music, fashion, and the industry. They transformed and defined the period. Period.
Agreed
And they also became the poster boys of spandex rock and it died. Now steel panther are the closest to hearing a van halen record
GTR The fashion may be in a hiatus, but the music lives on. You can listen to ANY Van Halen’s song today and it’s still fresh & awesome. As for fashion, just you wait, the big hair and tight pants will come back. Fashion goes in cycle.
One of the craziest mother f#$%ers out there... and also smart as a whip.. Love this guy I could listen to him all day long..
Dave is bat shit crazy, but like Bon Scott is one of the greatest frontmen of all time.
He’s a narcissist for sure! Maybe that’s what drove him to be an epic frontman. The original VH was definitely the best.
Great showman was Dave, especially with all the jumping. Wasn’t a good live vocalist though, in contrast to Mercury and Plant.
An entertainer. Full stop. What more do you want?
Sammy's a bigger narcissist . After his VOA show in Anchorage he threw a big hissy fit when a small amount of tickets didn't sell and told the manager he'd never play in Alaska ever again and MFer never did . He say he only never sold out in New York . And I'm pretty sure he said he sold out in his VOA tour
My favorite DLR quote: It’s like this: Sammy throws a party... but I am the party.
The original VH with DLR will always be my favorite era.
"Sam knocks on the door... a bottle of tequila in one hand, his dick in the other..."
We were extremely lucky to have grown up during the 70's and 80's with VH in the background 😁
David Lee Roth really cracks himself up !
🤣🤣🤣🤣 yeah he does!! LMAOOOOO
Dave is unkillable! 😅🤘🤘
I hear you. I was in my mid twenties when Van Halen hit the scene, and when I heard that first album I nearly wept because the frigging disco atmosphere was like a pandemic. I knew right then and there Rock had been rescued!
I just can’t get enough of Diamond Dave... he’s so honest and articulate with a touch of crazy. All in all he’s an interesting and good dude.
Well David Lee Roth is almost 70 years old.
He's lived a more interesting life than any of us ever will most likely so cut him a break.
They put out some of the best music ever in the late 70s and early 80s
"C'mon Dave..... Give me a break"..😎

He’s only 64, still young compared to other dudes like Ozzy and Mcjagger
Roth is kind of a younger version of Keith Richards. Better living through chemistry.
DLR is just an up beat individual. Not beat - up individual.

He went to the same school Kevin Nash did lol
Well, there’s that. Lol.
I keep trying to picture this guy as the 1980s with the hair guy.
Lol ew. But good point.
EVH changed the sound of metal guitar to this day
DLR changed the look of front men for 20 years
That’s impact
20 years?! By the time GnR came along, nobody wanted to look like Roth. Less when the Grunge movement came along. Van Halen's "impact" was like 7 years. Maybe less? By 1985 Roth was gone and VH w Hagar was a joke.

Wow I gotta admit to a whole new admiration and appreciation for David Lee Roth. Hes a showman for sure.
'Diamond Dave' was the most in your face, energetic and outrageous frontman ever to hog the mic for Van Halen!!! It was good while it lasted!!! Your solo effort also rocked!!! Thank you!!!

He is very smart and his stories are amazing, very nostalgic human being. Always liked Mr. Roth...
VH was a rolling circus of genius and excess. What a great time those days were. Thank you fellas 👍🏻
Respect, this guy is a legend, and still has a great persona. Lots of great great stories, many have run out of juice, DLR is still powering.
Saw Van Halen 3 times. What wonderful memories. I’m 53 now, and what I wouldn’t give to be 17 again. Carpe diem, my friends. Carpe diem.
I went to " Sky Scraper" and " Eat'm and Smile" shows with DLR , Steve Vai and Billy Sheehan two of the most entertaining shows ever .....
David Lee was good with Van Halen and good solo.
You can't say the same for Eddie Van Halen.
I saw the Sky Scraper tour too, it was one of the most entertaining rock concerts I ever saw, Dave is a great showman. Sheehan was not there, but the rest of the band including Steve Vai was there , the subsitute bass player was good and did his job, and they played great, everyone had a great time.
Eat 'Em and Smile was a great and seriously underrated album.
@@UKSportsFan I liked Sky Scraper equally as well .
I was blown away by the Hot For Teacher video as a little kid.
What I never appreciated at the time was Alex's opening drums-- that rumbling Harley- Davidson sound. Under-appreciated, IMO.
That one jazz chord after the tapping got me into jazz.
I love the drums at the beginning. It sounds like a 1,000 hp engine before it goes full throttle and then BAM! The song kicks in.
Just to clarify: Joe Rogan asked a question and to this day it remains unanswered! 😂

no direct answer to a single question. You got to love diamond Dave.
I will always remember you guys in the days when we were all young and the rock and roll was awesome. Thank you for your contribution David Lee Roth and of course Van Halen.
One thing about Dave is he is a consummate showman and he was so unbelievably fit. That guy was always in phenomenal shape.
His artistry and life was one big party and he's still sippin cocktails.

Get more rock n rollers on! Get Robert plant
Ted Nugent!

He's your worst nightmare, butt-horn.
He is not capable of answering a damn question.
awolf007 Agreed but i do think in his day he was the best frontman and probably hasn't been surpassed. Now he's hella broken seeming
He looks a lot like Steve Martin when he laughs.
