I ATTEMPT TO RESTORE 25 YEAR OLD PAINT - BEGINNERS MACHINE POLISHING

- Welcome back all,
In this week's video I give the faded paintwork on my Volkswagen T4 some attention & attempt to bring it back to life! This process was very long winded but all these steps need to be carried out, to ensure the outcome of the paintwork correction looks the best possible. There are a few bad patches of paint on the vehicle and therefore these did not come out gleaming like the rest. I do plan to get these sections re-sprayed as I feel this would really finish the paintwork off.

There's that satisfaction you get from transforming dull paint to a brilliant shine, great shine great job by the way I'm watching your videos here from United States 🇺🇸
Thank you for watching from the United States! I’m glad you enjoyed the transformation process 😁🇺🇸
Love being gaslit with the GREEN car. That car is BLUE sir.
How about TEAL? Or TURQUOISE?😉
@@addappt gaslit is a bit strong? 🤣 It’s more Turquoise/Green in person though 👍🏻
@@Mk2Mitch 🤣
Mitch. Have you tried doing one panel at a time rather than the whole vehicle? It can be like painting the Forth Bridge. Or a T4! I'm currently in the process of rattle can painting mine. It's going well and the bits done so far are top class. It's going to be beautiful when completed. Sanding and polishing machine makes light work of imperfect paint laying, and it's going to look like a 5 grand job in the end. And'll only end up costing about £275 on paint, sanding discs and 2K top coat. Very enjoyable to do as you're not spending hours and hours - and you don't have to worry about it raining every few days as long as you can get enough done per dry spell. And you don't even need to buy all your paint in one go either as the man at the shop mixes a perfectly matched few cans every time. Following this logic, you actually don't ever need to clean - or paint - the entire vehicle all at once! 🙂
thank you for breaking this down very shortly and nicely, I have watched a lot of vids from various 'pro detailers' and none was so to the point, giving quick tips and even idea of products used without glorifying the one sponsor. In my 'normal car guy' eyes you've done a great job and you passed on knowledge or at least basics of it. And to you guys reading - question - how to properly do it incl. waxing, on the white car? (sounds a bit stupid I know, but I had a problem with polishing some scratches by hand in the day light).
Great job on the polishing. Judging by the MOT history I'd say the lower third is pretty much filler over welding lines :)
Thank you! Yes a little filler unfortunately 👍🏻
Knowing how long this process actually takes it come out amazing! Well done
Thank you! 😁
I'm about to give my mk2 her first polish next week and this video arrived just in time to boost my confidence levels for that!
Glad the video can lend you some help! That’s what it’s all about 😁
That’s amazing. Great job Mitch
Great work Mitch, it's a great feeling seeing your work paying off👍👌
Thank you pal! It certainly is a good feeling 😁
Quality video as per usual
Looking forward to seeing the van completed
Thank you! 😎
Excellent video mich enjoyed how you explained every part of the cleaning and polishing keep it up mich can't wait for next week video cheers Neil
Thank you Neil, glad you enjoyed the stages of the video 😁
Good to see you and your dad yesterday
Looking great! Amazing what you can do with a little bit of hard work. I’m glad you put some protection on that paint work as that’ll fade faster than my tan when I come back off holiday 👌
Haha, cheers mate! Yes got to get it waxed and I like to keep it topped up every 6 months 😁
Really useful guide, never machine polished before, but looking forward to giving it a try.
Great to hear this video may be helpful 😁
Nicely done Mitch you got a nice finish there! Clean your Car is still going mate use them myself always been happy with the service from them 👍
Cheers Nick! Great to hear they’re still going, I’ll have to browse their website!
Looks well, did use G3 on my black bmw and wasn’t to impressed, but was told to keep spraying with water so not to burn through the paint, that’s were I must have gone wrong
Great result Mitch looks much better 👌 Dampen your pad slightly mate it’ll last a lot longer ! Good thing about these vans is because of the body lines they’re pretty easy to do a sympathetic restoration or tart up around the bottom half that’s probably why you see so many in two tones …nice job 👍
Cheers for the suggestion, I’ll try this when I machine polish the rest!
Brilliant Job considering mitch
Great results on the camper van, its some difference. Dampen your polishing pad a bit, it will lessen it tearing apart as quickly and stop as much vibration during the cutting process. Top stuff, its hard work, specially the clay barring..Best wishes .
Thank you! I will use this advice for tackling the rest of the paintwork and see how long the pads last! 😁
Great job. Spin your whole fleet up!
Thank you! That’s the plan, when I get round to them all 🤣👍🏻
@@Mk2Mitch 🤣👍🏻
That is a magic result.
Thank you!
Very impressive - proper bit of work to get there so fair play. 😁👍
Thank you mate! 😁
Spot on mate, looks like a different vehicle!! Came up well 👍
Thank you mate!
Fantastic Video, the results are fantastic welldone, looks like one of your fleet know👏👏
Thank you! 😁
Great video I’ve got a facelift t5 red and need to bring the colour back
Cheers
Glad you liked the video! Hopefully you can brighten up your paintwork 😎
Great work and amazing results 👌👌
Thank you pal! 👍🏻
Good work pal looking good, you should do this to escort van. Cool video 🤙
Cheers mate, I’m planning on mopping the escort van soon 😎
Well done Great effort pays off
Thank you!
Looks great mate gotta ❤ a T4 👌🇬🇧
Thank you 😁
Some difference well done mate
Thank you pal! 😎
Usually use a mist of water when machine polishing because its easy to overheat the paint with the machine could be why your pad packed in early, looks good man well done you said any one could give me any tips get a set of alloys on to your dads first van wheels look rank 😂
Cheers for the advice, will give the mist a go! 😁
Great job mitch well will certainly be purchasing that fusso wax 👍
Great to hear! The fusso wax is my favourite and reasonably priced too 😎
Wow great job dude.. top work 😊 Pete
Thank you Pete! 😁
Good result. Crack on get it done mate👍🏻
Thank you 😁
It's definitely not a turd brv . Cracking work 👍🏻
Thank you pal! 👍🏻
Good we hack for you use a heat gun on the plastic black bumpers it springs out the oil of the bumper to make it block Love the videos dek🏴
Thank you for the advice mate!
Lovely old job
And doesn’t feel good at the end of the. Nice job mate
Good job!
Thank you! 😎
Great job, you might want to lock in that hard work with a true ceramic coating.
Thank you for the advice, I’ll have a research and see what I can find 👍🏻
Well done mitch looking great 👍. You went the extra mile not like my pal Marcus fairy washing up liquid and your done 😅😅
😆😆😆
Yes you can. Put it in the freezer for a bit. And use Dark tan Parade gloss. 😅
Looking mint mate fab job
Thank you 😎
looking fresh
Thank you!
Intead of spending money on fancy and expensive tar removers, just get yourself a 20 litre petrol can and some towelling cloths from IKEA. Use rags soaked in petrol. Much much cheaper, and it actually doesn't damage old, already-scratched paintwork anyway. As long a you put the polish back into the surface afterwards, you'll be good to go in less than half the time.
Once you realise it's not rocket science, you never go back to bodyshops...
It's only paint!
🙂
For tack-free cleaning between paint layers use methylated spirit and clean cloths. It goes on lovely.
Top job mucker im a T4 owner myself, get some 303 - Graphene Nano Spray Coating on it job done, good channel
Thank you pal! I’ll look into that spray coating 😁
No, but you can roll it in glitter... Fantastic job done
Thank you 😆
Great work!
Thank you!
Nice job. The difference is huge. I got a question about the polisher. How much is the rpm? It looks like a steady small and handy to use polisher. Keep up the good work
Thank you! Unfortunately I do not know the rpm, this machine polisher is fairly old now 👍🏻
Great job
Thank you!
Nice one mate ! Probably polished 1000 pound into it 👍👍
Cheers pal, I hope so 🤣
Good job 👌🏻
Ohsoretro is a great car show
Agreed, we attend every year! 😎
Great video
Thank you!
Ever considered wet and drying it and giving it a coat of acrylic lacquer?
No I haven’t, only because I’m very happy with this finish 👍🏻 What would be the benefits of wet and drying it?
Nice!! Feeling inspired. 💙 What wud u recommended for removing cement spots?
Glad you feel inspired! Cement spots is a hard one! Possibly a thick snow foam with some strong G101 👍🏻
Keep Good job 😊
Thank you!
Great transformation. Only now catching up on the T4 content. How much did the van cost to purchase if you don't mind me asking ?
Thank you! Roughly £2,700 👍🏻
@@Mk2Mitch money well spent. Tidy bus. Cheers Mitch
The differance was tenfold can you do a break down on costs at the moment as i am looking to do the same with a van in the near future crack on
Thank you! Unfortunately I won’t be able to do a breakdown of the costs but I have left all the links to the product websites in the description of this video 👍🏻
have you sold it ? sure saw one same at auction
It did go through the auction but didn’t reach the reserve! 👍🏻
You can't polish a turd but you can roll it in glitter....
Il bring my van round you can do that 😆
😊😊😊😊
What density of the clay bar are you using for this paint.
I’m not 100% sure. It was just advertised as a clay bar 👍🏻 Sorry not much help!
A nice set of audi rotors would look ace on that old girl
I agree! Would look very cool 😎
The short answer is, 'no you can't' hehehe, but well done for trying, Mitch.
I think I was successful at polishing this turd? Did you not see that gleaming paintwork at the end of the video? 😁
@@Mk2Mitch Yes indeed, just joking mate, you did a grand job there. ;)
hi were is the mk2 waiting for the update,,,
Slow progress on the escort but I’m chipping away at it 😎
I think you should lacquer it.
What would be the benefit of this? Would cost a lot surely?
@Mk2Mitch It prorects and enhances the finnish. Just do the bits you painted.
I did it on my audi wing and door with rattle cans. I painted the wing and door with cans, then lacquered it. I gave it 3 coats, opting to do finner coats. £20 worth of lacquere.
und diese ganzen aggressiven Reinigungsmittel gehen ins Grundwasser?
💪💪👍👍
Been doing this job for over ten years… tell me how bad those shoulders burned afterwards mate 😂
Yes it was quite the workout for sure! 🤣
What’s happening to the escort
Progress is slow but I’m chipping away at it!
I am pretty sure that whatever product is dreamt up for Detailers, they will buy it. Its just washing a car mate, nothing more than that.
I think I achieved much more than just washing a car in this video? I showed many steps of decontamination WITH results shown (glue and tar - running tar spots, just to name one!) All the products serve a purpose 👍🏻
@@Mk2Mitch It just looks like a clean car mate. The point I was making is that manufacturers come up with every possible description they can to sell what is either a detergent, an abrasive or a polish and whatever chemical-sounding name they give to it, the end result is the same. The only real difference is the time and effort you so clearly put in. No offence but it's 'the kings new clothes'. Does nobody ever stop to remind themselves that these are not new products, just re-packaged and cleverly marketed concoctions. Just an opinion, not a criticism.
only one pad?
Used many others! Just tried the new one for the first panels 👍🏻
Yes it would seem you can polish a turd. Well done on your turd polishing indeed
Thank you pal!
No,you cannot polish a turd, but you can roll it in glitter
😆😆😆
101 will dull the paint
What’s 101?
Prepare to be skint, I’ve had loads of T4s and T5s / T5.1s so so unreliable but they look cool as F so I keep going back 🤣, german engineering makes me laugh so much 🤣🤣🤣
I’ve been driving T5’s for 17 years they are very very reliable if you look after them
This old girl has treated me fairly okay so far 😆 got 216,000 miles on the clock too!
VW paint comes up trumps.
That’s the strangest shade of green of green I have ever seen looks a bit more like blue to me 😂😂😂
It’s more turquoise 🤣 The camera makes it look blue!
Nice an shiny. 👍
Cheers 😎
@@Mk2Mitch I was watching another couple at an auction a few weeks back. And I thought I wonder if Mitch is there. And as tho by magic there yo where filming.
I gotta catch with one of yours at the auction as a capri went for quite big numbers they wasn’t expecting.
Any way take care stay safe. Keep up the good show love watching an chilling out. 👍.
