I’m don’t like surprises at all. I definitely don’t want someone else picking my fabrics and projects. I’ll spend my money on what I want to make not on someone else’s ideas. That said, I enjoy watching unboxing videos. They always confirm that I don’t want to subscribe. I also see a few products that I do want to track down to purchase. I love Crystal Heart’s subscription box roulette where she actually makes something with the products in her stacked up boxes. Subscription boxes depend on the person’s personality. For some people they work perfectly, just not for me. Thank you for these unboxing videos because they are fun to watch.

I've been getting Sew Yeah's subscription box since the beginning. I've enjoyed them all, good value and projects. This is the year of precuts...
They also, as many shops, have lots of free patterns on their website. They have, now, 3 brick and mortar stores, the main one, Sew Yeah Quilting in Las Vegas, Bearly Threaded Quilting in Soldotna, AK, and Scrap Apple Quilting in St George, UT. They offer service projects throughout the year, and are a great family.

I subscribed to Mrs. Quilty. This box has enough fabric to do a block of the month type project and a smaller project. It always has a notion in it also. The thing about the notions is im new at anything to do with sewing and there has been a couple of notions i had no idea what they were or how to use them. The first few did have what it is and what its used for in the book that comes with it. But my notion this month was not in the book and i have no idea what it is or how to use it If this continues i may consider one of these you mentioned and discontinue my Mrs. Quilty subscrition.

I wasn't a huge fan of the Mrs. Quilty box. It sounds like you like getting that nice variety of products so I would suggest trying the Sew Sampler subscription from the Fat Quarter shop. I think you would like it and I honestly think their notions, patterns, and fabric are a nicer quality.

  • @charlenemorris6391

I get Primitive Gatherings- comes on even numbered months. A large year long quilt, 2 other quilt project, stitchery project(small), a notion. I like the variety and the fact it is not every month. I still work so I keep up most of the time.
I have gotten sew sampler and really liked it but was getting notions and fabric that I was not interested in at all.
Open Gate would be a plus for me but it is monthly and maybe next year I will change.
If I am not doing the projects I should rethink continuing with subscription.

I love your tips.:) I had the Sew Sampler when I first started quilting in 2020, and looked forward to it every month. I stopped after a while, but it’s great for beginners, and you immediately feel included in a quilting community. I have since subscribed to Cotton Cuts, the FQs, then changed to half yards, then to three one-yard cuts. I loved that one! But I stopped again just because your stash builds so quickly! I think precuts are so great for beginners, they aren’t as threatening as a full yard cut. Not subscribed to any now, but they are so much fun! Thanks, Fallon!❤

As a newish sewist and a new quilter, I did my homework and settled on Open Gate last summer. I subscribed for about 6 or 7 months through the holidays and then recently stopped it. I have 6 table toppers/wall quilts and found it a great way to teach myself quilting which was my goal. I don't need any more projects like that (plus I'm 2 projects behind). So recently, I switched over to CottonCuts PMQ where I signed up to make 2 mystery quilts, one large and one small. I like the slower pace which allows me to change things up and work on other projects that I have lined up, including 3 baby quilts! PS, I have learned that I don't like over 90% of the fabrics that are out there. I guess I am uber picky!

Thank you, Fallon. I just started getting the Open Gate box this month and absolutely loved it.
I also started getting the Ginger Quilter box and maybe would have liked it better if it had arrived before the Open Gate box. I’m not sure now, but I’m thinking they were close to the same price. There were two pieces of fabric included for the project that were not my taste at all so I ended up purchasing other fabric to use in place of them. I am doing the project and with my additional fabric, I’m thinking it looks great. The funny thing was that both boxes contained an expanding magnetic pin grabber.
Thanks again for explaining the different types of subscription boxes, so helpful for a beginner quilter with no stash.

I received it for one year when I first started quilting. Then I stopped before year 2 started. I'm glad I did because I wasn't impressed with anything from that year. Then I restarted up again in Dec. 23'. I am so happy with the Dec & Jan boxes. I'm looking forward to the February box. I see a lot of unboxings. What about subscriptions to magazines.? I’ve just started doing this and at the moment I am in my 4th month of Fat Quarter Shops Monthly Sew Sampler. I am liking it, like you said there are usually two, sometimes 3 patterns, an assortment of either thread, and/or other notions, a block of the month which runs May thru April of the following year. I started in Nov and have been collecting them, I see the ones I missed with my late start last November, are for purchase so if someone wanted to catch up, that’s a nice feature! The best thing is the special discount codes we get in the boxes. One of the projects recently was a quilt and I needed a few more charm packs for how I was going to do it so the discount came in handing. I am liking this one very much!

I tried a Mrs Quilty box offered at half price to entice me to subscribe. Well, I didn't like the project, too curesy, and fabric was okay. I didn't subscribe. Last year I tried the Ginger box, didn't like it because it was a zippered pouch project with vinyl. I don't liked pouches, bags, totes, purses, backpack projects at all. I like pieced projects, but not too many table toppers or wall hangings. I just like normal size quilts. I gave the Ginger box to my SIL who promptly made the project. I didn't get any more boxes. I watch the RUclips channels with QAL and BOM, these don't interest me at all. Mystery quilt? I don't think so. I think subscription box business' should ask what type of projects they like and don't like, fulfill to that subscriber's tastes. Not detailed, but do you like projects with zippers, handy crafted items, pieced quilts. Then using the same notions and fabrics, give patterns that can be can used.
I have watched 2 years of unboxing from all the RUclipsrs and the Christmas Advent boxes. I decided to subscribe to Pineapple Fabrics through Keepsake Quilting and have received 2 very pleasantly surprising boxes so far. I also enrolled in Pammie Jane's BOM from Keepsake quilting. It's called "Bloom Where Mew Are Planted". I subscribed because each month is a new piecing technique. The first 3 months are basic piecing, but then applique, then FPP and then...EPP, ending with Dresden plates for a border. An 88"x88" quilt.
