#LOST SOUNDTRACK ANALYSIS (Michael Giacchino's score)
Michael Giacchino considers himself a storyteller first and a musician second. On LOST, his soundtrack doesn't just suit the story of the show - it adds to it. By attaching certain scenes to established characters, locations, emotions and events through his music, Giacchino provides additional context and meaning to what's happening on screen. This way, understanding Giacchino's rich collection of themes and leitmotifs is another way to further appreciate the score, as well as the show in general. "LOST - Storytelling In Music" provides new, bite-sized soundtrack analysis videos on a weekly basis for those that just can't love the show enough!
This week, we're digging into a scene from LOST episode 2x09 "What Kate Did". The soundtrack playing during Shannon's funeral (aptly titled "Shannon's Funeral") features two recurring themes, as well as a minor recurring piano and string motif.

So many years after the show's ending, Michael Giacchino's amazing soundtrack for LOST still has many, many secrets to uncover. Not only does every main character have their own theme music, but much like the interconnected writing of the show itself, Giacchino's score connects locations, scenes, emotions and conflicts in unbelievably brilliant ways. For the foreseeable future, I will be exploring Michael Giacchino's soundtrack from ABC's LOST in (hopefully) a weekly video, covering specific scenes from the show and their musical connections to each other.

Happy 8/15! Wow, I can't believe it's been a year since I've teased this project. It's not because I've lost the passion for it; sure, recent news about the writers' room has made my love for, and support of the show more complicated than ever. However, this new series of videos, much like the previous one, will focus on a different type of storytelling, as told through the work of a person that can't be praised enough.
Michael Giacchino is one of very few people that played a part in the production of every single episode of the show. He's very much a storyteller in his own right. While "LOST Soundtrack Analysis" focused primarily on new themes and motifs introduced in each episode, "Storytelling In Music" will dig deeper into the score from specific scenes. What can we take away from these moments, based on the soundtrack alone? As a lonely, frightened and angry, but great man once said: "GO WATCH IT!!!!"

What a pleasant surprise it was to see another FringeMusic107 video in my sub box!
Thanks for breaking down the foundation of Shannon's first theme! I had only been able to recognize it by the melody before.
Seeing the funeral scene also made me notice for the first time that the survivors seem to be following the Jewish tradition where each of the mourners throws some dirt (or sand) into the grave. I wonder if that was a writing or directorial decision. And now that I think about it, I don't think any of the characters in Lost are explicitly Jewish.

So beautifully put and presented, one of Giacchino's most heartbreaking moments for sure

I love that! Thanks a lot. I don't have as much time for these as I used to, but I have some fun stuff planned for (at least) the next two months - at least one video for each season, as well as another special thing for the 19th anniversary. 😄
