Just a nice car. Someone will be very happy, I'm sure. No need to spend more...unless you need Euro 6.
I don't think the engine is likely to blow up any time soon, either. And I'm sure you can get a drivetrain warranty. As far as I understand it, the weakest parts are the turbos and the air suspension, and those are the same weak parts on any brand of luxury car these days. And other things that break from time to time, largely electronics related, are also the same as on any luxury car, and cost about the same to repair as on any luxury car. Basically, they're as reliable as any luxury car. If it were me, I'd have the oil and filter changed annually, and just keep on top of wear and tear items, which would mainly be suspension and brakes related on a big car like this. But driven like a granny, like most people drive these, I suspect the suspension and brake wear is better than you think.
All the naysayers can drive ordinary cars, but life is short, and people need to understand that all modern cars are complicated and can be very costly to repair. There's no such thing as a drive-in exhange engine for a 100 quid anymore. The three-cylinder engines that are now ubiquitous are unproven, every single modern turbo is a ticking time bomb, and all are expensive to repair or replace.
If all you care about is getting from A to B and dodging big bills, buy a Lexus or Toyota, but know that even Toyotas and Lexuses can have issues. Several of the engines have serious issues, their big cars also have suspension issues, and parts costs are high. No car is immune from problems, and high expectations drive complaints. If you pay for the best, you expect the best, and people are more likely to complain on the forums. Also, many of the people who buy Range Rovers are the complaining type. If you buy a Skoda Yeti or Dacia Duster, you are much more likely to overlook minor issues. Yet, even Dacias and Skodas aren't anywhere near as cheap as they once were. Pre-Covid a Sandero was from £7,995, now from £13,795!
No longer can you get a brand new cheap and cheerful Duster for £9,995. And for the £26k you can easily spend on a new Duster, it is possible to get a low/moderate mile RR Sport or Evoque with extended factory warranty. I know which car I'd rather have. Of course, I'm in the older demographic and don't do loads of miles. However, I do fully appreciate all the benefits of a new car, or a newer car still under factory warranty. But if you want a luxury car, no matter the brand, you're going to pay. If you buy a used Lexus or Toyota, you pay a premium that could pay for significant repairs. If you buy a new Lexus SUV it's going to cost at least two to three times as much as this used RR, and it's going to depreciate much more and much faster. The difference pays for a LOT of repairs. And let's face it, most people get by with minimal service/maintenance/repair costs. What I don't get is those that don't appreciate the benefits of a car like this and those that chase having the latest registration plate. You think the neighbours are impressed when you park a 24-plate Dacia Duster on the driveway? And who with more than half a brain cares what the neighbours think anyway?! Impress yourself. That's all that matters.
I agree with Barrie. Cars like this are unbelievable value for money. If you're in the market for a 20 grand car and have a moderate income, you can afford to drive the best. It's up to you. And please don't tell me a Range Rover isn't the best. It's the go to car for royals, government ministers, and farmers. Yeah, I remember the line on Auf Wiedersehen, Pet! "You know the difference between a hedgehog and a Range Rover, divvn't you? ...A hedgehog's got pricks on the outside." IME, that's often the case, but plenty of pricks drive cheap and nasty cars, too. It's your choice whether you're going to be a prick. It's your choice whether you buy a Range Rover or not. And it's your choice not to be a prick if you choose to drive a Range Rover...or choose to drive something else.
