That was one of my favorite Cziffra performances. Real artistry there. Not just virtuosity. I love this under-rated Concerto by Liszt.

It’s not underrated. Stop saying underrated.

@@therealtruetwelfth798 Then why don't you hear it featured very often? I say it's under-rated as in not given the respect through performance as it deserves. It's a great piece of music.

Cziffra was the definite Liszt master, for sure. His virtuosity was electrifying, and he had the soul of a poet when he needed to have one. One of the greatest pianists of our time.

All fervent thoughts put in 23 minutes of serene, joyous, lyrical, dramatic quality music! This is one of the greatest concerti for sure (at least of the romantic period), and to be honest, I like this more than Liszt 1! Cziffra mastered it so well, (I wonder if he recorded #3 as well), this is definitely a legendary performance! 😀 One of the most pensive writings in the history of music.

I've heard of Tchaikovskys and Rachmaninoffs concertos first but after discovering this masterpiece I was blown away, since this was composed in the mid 19th century compared to Tchaikovskys which sounded just like from mid 19th century, Liszt piano concerto 2 sounded par with racha concertos IMO or maybe even better for my preferences.

Loved this concerto since my teens and here we have a happy partnership with Cziffra and Andre Vandernoot. Cziffra was to have played it at the London Proms in the early 1960s, with a group of Liszt's solo pieces in the second half of the concert. Sadly, he sprained his wrist and had to cancel. The Polish pianist Malcuzynski deputised and with a selection of Chopin works after the intermission.

Top. Great recording. Cziffra is unusually restrained - seems he's having to be more measured than his typical swashbuckling style in order to keep the Orchestra with him, I just get a sense that he's a bit held back. And a tip of the hat to whoever prepared the piano, it's fantastic. How the melody sings at 9:40 ! I want this piano!!!! The lowest register has to be perfection for this concerto and in so many cases the lowest A is lacking. They got it right here IMHO.
