Andrè Vandernoot, conductor
Philharmonia Orchestra
Liszt’s melodies are fabulous.
The ending is superb
Cziffra made his UK Royal Festival Hall debut in September 1957 with this concerto and Hungarian Fantasy for piano and orchestra. He played many encores and both the audience and orchestra applauded for a good twenty minutes. The reviews had the critics searching for their most colourful superlatives. I heard Cziffra play the same works in Manchester UK with the Halle Orchestra and George Weldon in February 1959 and the public reaction and reviews were just as overwhelming. Cziffra remains one of the greatest Liszt players and virtuosos of all time. Thank you PianoJF for yet another great upload with score.
piano345 you were there ? How old were you ?
@@mr.p5446 I would have been an adventurous 15 year old. Gosh, how time flies.
piano345 you know I was watching the marvelous mrs Mazel with my wife and the story is about a comedian lady in New York in the 50’s . And I couldn’t help but imagine that I would be happier if I was 30 in the 50’s . I am a pianist and would love too have watched Cziffra , Rubstein, Horowitz ...
@@mr.p5446 In the early 1960s I saw Rubinstein play the second concerto of Brahms with the Halle Orchestra and Barbirolli.
The build up to that trill at 1:49 and then that descending passage after, so brilliant! Love Cziffra's execution.... thank you for all of your posts, uploads.
That's typical Cziffra
“The principal task of a conductor is not to put himself in evidence but to disappear behind his functions as much as possible. We are pilots, not servants.”
-- Franz Liszt
1. Allegro maestoso (0:00)
2. Quasi adagio (5:32)
3. Allegretto vivace - Allegro animato (10:24)
4. Allegro marziale animato (14:34)
Crystal clear playing.Sometimes too hasty to my taste.Richter remains my favourite and this one second.
amazing recording. Cziffra has that trademark staccato sound in his Liszt playing, and also the subtle fluctuations of time. To me he is the closest to how Liszt himself might have sounded.
Köszönöm! Virtuóz!

Sir Franz is the best!
Good performance of ok concerto
0:48 wtf..
Thank you!
Solo e 1 saben todos los pianistas.
Has some similarity with la campanella!
I quit piano.
Don't do it, there is still hope. Practice long-short rhythms for fast passages. Always from playing slowly to quickly and make it gradual
And the joke was officially lost on me [r/woooooooooooooo...oooosh]
