  • This plant has been with me for 40 years. From a tiny cutting to 11
    x 5 feet. Did some serious pruning this year and continuously starting new cuttings. In all the years only repotted twice. Each spring it produces 3 to 4 hundred blossoms.

    🎉I recently watched an amazing video about Christmas cactus and I must say, it was truly impressive! The video showcased the beauty and versatility of these plants in such an engaging way. The way the video captured the different stages of growth, from blooming to sprouting, was simply stunning. It was evident that the video was made with a lot of care and attention to detail, as every shot was perfect and showcased the Christmas cactus in its most natural form. I loved how the video also provided insightful tips on how to care for these plants, making it not only visually appealing but also informative. Overall, I highly recommend this video to anyone looking to learn more about Christmas cactus or just looking to appreciate the beauty of nature.

    What a Spectacular plant. 2 years ago I found a epiphyllum in a hanging basket by someone’s garbage to be picked up by the road & I stopped & saved it. But it hasn’t bloomed nor do I know much about caring for them other than my mama never let her Christmas cacti get to damp. When do they bloom?

    • @lht4225
      @lht4225  4 года назад

      I used to think I had a Christmas Cactus. After a long time with some research, there is a distinct difference between what is called C. C. and what is called Orchid Cactus. The stems of the C. C. are short sections with smaller blossoms generally and the O. C. has flat and sometimes triple edge flat. So mine is an official Orchid Cactus. The Plant List includes 82 scientific plant names of species rank for the genus Epiphyllum. Of these 15 are accepted species names. I don't know if the Christmas Cactus is a Species of the epiphyllum? Sounds like another good question for Google. Could be. Anyway, to answer your question about care. Obviously, I hit on something that works spectacularly well. You are correct, they don't like to be over watered, wait till they are totally dry and then,, FEED them, don't just water. I use VF11 as directed. Any good plant food will do I suppose,, which is way better than nothing. Finally, keep it out of direct sunlight most of the day. They will do fine in very little direct sunlight but lots of indirect. Many people have complimented in the negative about my plant because I tend to let it grow over itself and it literally strangles itself if I don't prune and propagate the cuttings. And do NOT let it freeze. The epiphyllum comes from central and South America,,, I live in central Ca. 4 miles from the ocean and we rarely ever freeze, since my plant is in a covered deck,, no problem. It does seem to do well in the heat of the day which can get up in the 90's in summer. Hope that helps you. Bloom time is Spring with occasional off season singles here and there. They peak for about two weeks and then it's all over till next year, with a run that can last two months total. A cutting can take up to 3 years to bloom. Best Wishes, Lee Here is this years edition with music ruclips.net/video/HfcgusmXbNo/видео.html

      Here is this years edition with music and a tiny bit of humor at the end; the short cactus has a note attached. Originally it was a joke for a neighbor who was taking care of things while I was gone; it says "How about a hug"; the shorter cactus is asking the taller one as the Orchid Cactus "moves" in from above. The shorter one had what looked like two arms reaching up. So, consider yourself Hugged, and thank you, enjoy: ruclips.net/video/HfcgusmXbNo/видео.html

      I used VF11 for more years than I can remember. It is manufactured here in Ca. They used to take orders from anywhere. Then the pandemic caused problems with production of the product. For now it's Miracle Gro All Purpose Plant Food. These are concentrated liquid form. Mix a very small amount per gal. Directions of course, on the container. This cactus likes to be dry between watering. Easy to overdo it.

      Patience is a must. Then little or no direct sunlight and some plant food for succulents. I use VF11 but it's not sold all over the world so most anything will do fine. A very common mistake is overwatering... let them dry in between waterings. Another lesson I learned was to put a small cutting in a too large a pot,,, spends way too long filling the pot with roots instead of making a space for blossoms.

    • @lht4225
      @lht4225  4 года назад

      Indeed, I really had to get aggressive about pruning as it literally strangles itself. So I just pick the nicest shoots and start more. Finally got one to grow outside.

    • @lht4225
      @lht4225  4 года назад

      I realized I didn't actually answer your question. They start new shoots till they start to choke others off, not healthy thing to do actually. What happens is the arms do get longer to a point. Even then there is a limit or so it seems. So, Bigger? Only to a point where the pot gets root bound and then it's really time to split it up or prune. So far I am only pruning. It just keeps growing these larger shoots, looking very healthy but it chokes the older ones. Hence the need to prune regularly.

    • @lht4225
      @lht4225  4 года назад

      It seems to have peaked at somewhere between 300 and 400 blossoms, only in spring. That would be several years now.

      This plant is native to central and south America. And of course, California where this plant lives. Near the coast so it doesn't get too hot for very long, doesn't like direct sunlight. Likes it a bit cool but not too close to freezing; typical of northern Ca. nearer to the coast. Lots of these on youtube.

      @@marlimamprin3405 The translation of your messages is not totally clear but I will have a go at it,,, I think you are asking what makes the plant go so well. I don't know for sure but I do use a plant food available locally called VF11. The rest is what you see I guess. The best soil is that which is very good at draining or not holding the moisture,, it seems that the tendency is to water too much,, I then see what looks like little white cotton formations which I am told is a sign of over watering. I am guilty of this but it seems that it is not terminal since the original plant has grown so large. In the beginning when I received the plant as a very small cutting I had no idea what I had. And it got mostly ignored. I would water only occasionally so it remained mostly dry As it turned out this was what it needs,,, after a year or more I saw these amazing blossoms come out of this still very small cutting and I was hooked from then on. Amazing Grace!

    How do you get it to bloom so many...?

      Takes many years. This plant will be 40 years next year. A new cutting can take any number of years before it starts to blossom,, some more than others.

      This plant is nearly 40 years old. A new cutting can take years before it starts to bloom. I don't know the secret except just keep it out of direct sunlight and water every 2 weeks depending on climate. I use VF11 which seemed to really help it go.

      I added a video on Christmas day this year recording something magical it seems: One blossom peaked right at Christmas day,, amazing. We shall see how this years "crop" appears sometime in May is the usual order of things regarding the blooming season.
