Hi 🙂 ! I have an Orchid Cacti/Cactus. I originally saw one in FULL bloom @ a Nursery. It was Breathtaking!!! The gentleman told me it wasn't for sale 😩. Anyway, I asked him for a small piece of a leaf. It was about 4 inches long. Well, I planted it in 1993 & it grew vigorously. It is a very, very, very Happy plant!! In 2011, I lost my mom 😔. In April/May of that year my Cactus had 3 Beautiful flowers. I believe my mom sent them to me 😇😇. It has flowered every year since. I haven't seen any buds on it yet this Spring, maybe it is resting. I propogated two Beautiful plants last year from cuttings, they are doing VERY well. TYFS!!! 👍👍☺️
What soil mix are you using? I have found a mix of equal parts azalea/camelia mix, orchid bark and perlite makes for very happy epis that want to bloom a lot. They will limp along in just about anything but acidic well drained airy soil makes for well blooming plants. Also they like a few hours of morning sun and occasional fertilizing with cactus or half strength tomato fertilizer (not houseplant fertilizer it has too much nitrogen)
@@atomicskull6405 GREAT information! 🥰. ThnQ for that. Sad to say ☹️, I NEED to repot it. I have hesitated because it is SO BIG!!!!! I'm planning to use Cacti/Cactus Soil. I use "Orchid" Fertilizer.
I tried this method, and it really worked! I cut many at once, put them all in a clear container, left them at my front porch. About 2 weeks, I see roots growing from the bottom!
I just have to add my thanks to you for sharing this method! I tried it with twenty cuttings, and all twenty rooted successfully in under six weeks! Thank you so much!
We've had a plant for about 20 years. All the plant place told us was it was a "night bloomer". We keep it in our bedroom in a sunny window. Blooms once a year. This year we got two blooms. One grew out of the middle of a leaf and one from a stem. Beautiful plant. Thanks for your info!
Hello sttgharding, Your plant have very long life....if you want your plant produce more flowers, in early spring you should use SUPER BLOOMER fertilizer, it’s very good products..... Thanks for watching my videos. Thien

I first saw Orchid Cacti when I visited my friend in El Cajon, California. You see the Orchid Cacti everywhere in Southern CA. I live in Ozark, AL and brought back a couple of plants about five years ago. I have never seen another Orchid Cactus in Alabama. It is a shame as they are really easy to grow and have such beautiful flowers. I love them. Thanks for your informative video!
This method is incredibly!! Almost every single leaf I placed in water grew roots. Thank you so much for sharing! I get frustrated with how unsuccessful I am at propagating, so it’s nice to have it work out for once!!
My family has grown this amazing unusual plant for about 30 years...The incredible fragrance of the blooms and the beauty of them is something hard to describe, except to say that it is a beautiful intense fragrance like no other.
Thank you very much for this video. I just got about 30 leaves from a friend and I had no idea what to do to grow them. I really appreciate your time and effort in putting this together to help all of us!
Thank you for making this video. My mom gave me one if thse plants years ago but we didn't know what it was. 2 years later it bloomed and I fell in love with it, so gorgeous. This winter I almost killed it when my sons dog started to eat the leaves and I sprinkled cayenne pepper all over it. I am going to make some new plants from the parent this way. Thank you!

just few minutes earlier i got a long leaf on road side.. i didn't have any knowledge about the leaf. just after searching the name from google i know the name. and potting it to follow your instruction. thank you so much.
Thank you very much for your isntruction. I placed the cuttings from May 4 and May 14 they got lots of roots. They are now in the pot of soil. Hopefully they will thrive...
This is a wonderful video. I don't think I will write on the leaves, but the rest of your instructions are spot on! I got several cuttings from a FB friend last year of two types of epiphylllum. Now I have friends asking for cuttings, after seeing my posts...
I have also become enthusiastic about the multiplication of this Epiphyllum species. I started experimenting on cutting soil, in peat pots, on hydro granules with a bottom of water, on Vermiculite, on perlite, on a bottom of moss, in a terrarium, under plastic or glass bell jar and finally on water in a warm, light place without direct sunlight. . The latter makes the cuttings to root quickly, less rotten than with cuttings on sand, but water does change periodically. After rooting, plant the plant cuttings in a soil mix and place in a light, warm place and spray and give minimal water until new growth develops, then lighten the cuttings. Preferably in a window on north or east (gives the most flowers) or on the west behind shade lace or patterned glass. Smallest cuttings made of approximately 2x3 cm successfully developing into large plants.
Thanks for sharing, in the method of put cutting in the water, you should change the water twice a week, and some time shaking the water to give the cutting some oxygen..... Again thanks for watching videos.
Just got my first cuttings from USA from a friend, my instinct was to put them straight to the water and now I definitely will after seen you're video. You're orchid cactuses is amazing, thank you so much for you're video.
That was a great video and I learned a lot. Thank you very much. I have an epiphyllum that I've had for about 7 years and when it blooms, it has massive cream coloured flowers. As it was getting somewhat unruly, having taken over my coffee table, I decided to separate it about a month ago. It was a no-brainer and I divided it into 4 smaller plants and kept one for myself. Two friends and my brother all ended up with a sibling. In the fall, I'll try your method of propagation to create some more babies and pass them along. I admired how you were able to provide your cacti with an opportunity to grow upright. I will have to try that. Thanks again. Darryl

I have been using this method for a while with my pitaya cuttings. Usually takes about 8 weeks for roots to be ready for transplant. Just rooted my hookeri strictum epiphyllum in 4 weeks in moist coco coir! So easy!!
Hello carmen spring, Wow, I have ever seen any Epiphyllum, orchid cactus over 100 years old...I would love to see the pictures,,, Do you what kind of cactus you have? What is the color? Thanks for watching my videos and comments. Thien
Wow, saw this by chance and got hooked watching to the end. Love it and subscribed. 😍👍Your patience is amazing. Great video clear and concise presentation. I look forward to growing my own. Thank you very much for sharing. Btw, please make video when they flower, fruit and when to harvest. Saw a lady Tiktoker eating the fruit. Thank you again.😊
Thank you for the information =) I am new to these beautiful flowers/plants. I ordered some cuttings and will now do my best, using your video and expertise to try to root and grow them. THanks again!
I just acquired 2 epiphyllum lenghts. I was looking for way to care & grow them & landed on your video, I have more confidence now and will place them in the water to grow roots then will put them in the soil. Thank you for the detailed teaching video. Hopefully mine will root as strong as yours. Thanks again 💙 💜 💚
Hello Joan Robertson, When you get the cutting leaves, cut V shape, let air dry few days ( 7 days) in shaded area....then put in water... In cold area , you should keep inside.....warm , and stability, roots will form faster. Thanks for watching my videos and comments. Thien
Not sure if you still check your comments long after you produced this video. If so, I have a stupid question that I cannot find on the internet! I’ve exhausted all websites and I don’t know what to do!! I bought 4 stems placed in a pot full of soil. One was a red stem and the three stems are green. I paid $20 - well worth it to me. These stems are straight up, they don’t bend. I bought these 4 stems on May 4, 2021 from an ad on “Nextdoor”. One stem was ~8” tall and strong. The others were 6-8 “ tall. They don’t bend or flip. I am getting these stems off of stems. One original stem I bought is 9.5” tall and 2.5” wide; at the top tip where it narrows, a thin stem is growing straight up and is 6” long but it is skinny, yet stands straight. Am I supposed to cut this off and plant it! Also I have leafs frowning off the other three stems I bought and I don’t know what I’m supposed to do. Is this leaf where the flower will bloom?? Am I supposed to cut the fragile leaves that grow from the stems I bought? I spend so much time since I bought these figuring out what I’m supposed to do. One website said it likes to cling onto branches, mine did not like it and did not cling to wood branches. I actually love the upright stems. How does one get a red stem?? This is such an unusual cactus, which is why I bought it. If I can reach you or give you my info in private, please let me know. That is if you have time. I see that you use sticks and strings to hold some of your stems up. Can you explain? Should I do this?? Thank you!!! Rhonda in Florida
Hello Rhonda, Thanks for watching my videos. I can’t answer your questions unless I can see the pictures….. You can join my group: EPIPHYLLUM AND PLANTS AROUND THE WORLD. You can post pictures and questions, a lot of people will help you beside me. Thanks again.
Thank you for the very detailed explanation of how to propagate these. I just got my first one from a nursery and it had several pieces already broken off from being shipped. I hope they all thrive as well as yours! Awesome collection. :)
Good morning Rena Daen, Thanks for watching my videos... I have many viewers asking about to put cutting leaves in the water right away or let them dry few weeks before put them in water. Either way is ok, but if you let the cutting leaves dry few weeks, 4-5 weeks then put them in the water,,,then roots will form faster and NO ROTTEN PROBLEMS...... My experience, I cut leaves in October 2018, let them dry in green house until March 2019,,,,,i was in Vietnam for 4 months,,,after I got back , I put them in the water,,,,,( Oregon, cold winter) ,,they have formed healthy roots and no rotten problems.......it warm in Oregon now, I just plant them in the soil...... Good luck and have fun with your project.. Thanks again.
Thank you for your video I will follw your procedure next time I just cut and plant right away and all grew n hav had flowers i really love thats why i keep planting more
Hi I have had my beautiful pink cactus And never knew it was considered an orchid Cacti lol but I always have enjoyed the gorgeous pink flowers Now I can have more Yaaay👍😍 And you have such beautiful large plants ❤️

Good morning V Gil, From cutting leaves, take about 2 years for plants become mature, and star blooming..... Blooming less or more depends on your care and fertilizer.....I use SUPER BLOOMER after 2 years old, and star in February. Have a great holidays. Thien
Hello!! I did your method and it works well. I have some orchid cacti here in my collection among others. I have a cactus similar to herringbone cactus, but much narrower. I haven't discovered your name yet, because I got a seedling and it never bloomed. Your cactus collection is really cool. I am from of Brazil..😆
Great video and advice. I started four new Epiphyllum plants in October and have some recent videos of their progress. They should be very nice plants in a few years time :)
Please tell me more about the fern leaf cactus (6:50), Golden Heart. My fern leaf cactus keeps getting black tips, then rots or dies. I am desperately trying to save it, but what am I doing wrong? How much light does it need? How much water does it need? Maybe the soil is problematic - does it like to be moist/dry/water when dry? My propagations mostly just turn black and rot when I try to cut, and let it scab over a couple of days - going to try your water method. Thank you for this amazing video, and any tips about my fern leaf cactus!
Fern leaf cactus is very easy to grow and propagate…..just cut black tip or leaves and throw away….some kind of virus. It doesn’t need a lot of water and light….not directly sunlight…. You should use potting soil mix with some perlite…..also they like fertilizer, like all purpose fertilizer, Alaska fish fertilizer……it’s fast growing plants…. Propagation, just cut mature leaves, dips in rooting hormone, let it drying few days in shade area….then put in drying Potting soil, spray water lightly…..that’ll. Good luck Thanks for watching my videos.
Hello Charlene Cruz, Yes, this plants growing in shade, morning sun is perfect,,,,direct hot sun will burn the leaves..... Thanks for watching my videos. Thien
Hello Marietta Spry, thanks for watching my videos.... I sell cutting leaves and ship only in US,,,,,,this time, start summer is the best time to propagate Epiphyllum.... Thanks again Thien
Hello Marietta Spry, I have almost 50 different Epiphyllum, and have all colors...... For shipping purposes , I only ship 25 cutting leaves, 6 different colors of you choice,,,,,includes shipping is $100 US You can check Epiphyllum and colors in my channel: THIEN NHAT QUYNH.......many videos in there .... Especially in video: PHOTOS OF EPIPHYLLUM FROM MY COLLECTION...... thanks again Thien
After cutting, you can put the cutting air drying in shade area about 2 weeks....then put in the water, or in the soil. Either way will be good for rooting.
I live in Southern California with miserable soil.....I just stick them in hard soil and they grow and prosper in spite of me. Have them in the ground and planters. I ignore them until they show me how beautiful they are. How can I extend their blooms. On the plant they live for a day or two. In a vase don’t last long...any suggestions /recommendations more than welcomed.
Hello Marion, Thanks for watching my videos. Before you you plant, dig the hole , 15” wide, 15 deep, fill with good soil, a little bit of perlite and fertilizer ( like fish fertilizer or Osmocotte 14-14-14.), and water once a week,,,, you should plant in shade area, only few houses morning sun like under the trees, under th roofs,,,,in shade area , the blooming will last longer. After they mature, about 2 years,,, then you should fertilizer with MOREBLOOM ( ALASKA FERTILIZER) or SUPER BLOOMER, plants will bloom a lot ,,,. Thanks again
THIEN NHAT QUYNH I haven’t fertilized them but I will now. Yes, they are in the shade, by accident. Do you sell plants? Would love some different colors. How did you start your huge collection? I have no idea when/where I got my first plant...but they keep multiplying by themselves.
Hello Marion, 6 years ago, my friend sent me one plant, I don’t know much about this cactus, but after one year , with little care , it gave me a lot of flowers. Then after that I started to looking that cactus, some from friends, some I bought from nursery, now I have more than 50 plants, all different colors. For propagate, use cactus leaves,, you can check my videos “ THE FASTEST WAY, THE MOST EFFECTIVE WAY TO PROPAGATE EPIPHYLLUM “ I do sell cutting leaves,,,,for shipping purposes, i offers 25 cutting leaves, 6 different colors, your choice, including shipping is $100 US,,,, let me know Thanks again
THIEN NHAT QUYNH thanks but no thanks......at 88 don’t think so.......I have pink...red...white and maybe yellow....not a favorite. Love your orange. I just sent about 15+ leaves to Florida and I will forward your method to her....it is the easiest and simplest way to get plants. Read comments about zigzag plant....what is that?
Hello Anthony, Good potting soil plus Perlite, will help drain water fast…. Diseases on leaves come from different causes….maybe soil mix too wet, maybe in too humidity areas… I use Epsom Salt mixed with water and spaying on the leaves or you can use neem oil…. You should mix some slow fertilizer ( like Osmocote 14-14-14) , little Epsom salt in soil mix….help the plants growing stronger and healthier… Thanks for watching my videos.
Thanks so much for sharing this!! I received a few cuttings from a friend in the main and I'm so stressed wanting them to survive. I just tried your method for them all and get pretty confident doing it after watching this!
Hello Rachel Vong, This is perfect time to propagate cutting leaves,,,,,warm summer..... Good luck and have fun with your project.... Thanks for watching my videos. Thien
I have been experimenting for years with propagating Epiphyllum sub tropical leaf cactus from hobby. I started with cuttings on potting soil mix. Later on hydro pellets, perlite and vermicullum, to ultimately have the best and fastest results with cuttings on water. Lots of daylight and warmth, but no direct sunlight (privacy film or privacy glass or otherwise net curtain, or a window on the north or east), occasionally refreshing water. Once rooted, plant the cuttings in a suitable potting soil mix. Best is orchid-soil mix. The cactus soil mix which is sold is more suitable for desert cactus. The leaf cactus also grows well in principle, for one or two years, then the soil must be replaced. I also have extra success by having leaf stems rooted on both sides and planting them as an arch in the soil mix. As a result, the plant site cannot lose its energy, it swells enormously and starts to form several growth shoots, and then grows quickly. The top of the leaf cuttings also grows underground, along the soil and again above the ground, to then grow out with a broad adult stem. Wood chips mixed by the soil causes the roots of the plant to attach to decayed wood. Also water from below on a saucer, or through a tube to the bottom. And meanwhile let the soil dry thoroughly before watering again. Spraying on the leaf stems is always good. Good luck with the plant hobby.
Hello Juliet, Yes, they will drink water , and will form roots. Last year I cut leaves in September 2019, I leave in my sunroom for more than 6 months. When I got back from Vietnam, I put them in water on April 2020. Now they have a lot of roots. Also , rely to Joule , no the leaves put can put direct in the water after cut.... no problem at all. 2 ways to propagate cut leaves. 1 direct in the water 2 let air dry at least 2 weeks ( not 2 days) Then planted in soil . Thanks I left for Vietnam more
Hello a Justin, After cutting , you can put the cut leaves in water right away......for some reasons , you can leave the cutting leaves few weeks, it Is ok too......good luck. Thanks for watching my videos. Thien
Thanks for the great video. I have a doubt. After cutting the leaves in to pieces & making the V - cut , should we let it dry out a bit for it to callous or put it in water immediately?
Hello fokadokamoka, Thanks for watching my videos.... You may let the cut leaves dry in the shade 1-2 weeks , then put them in the water - follows instructions in video.. I think it will roots.... Thanks again
Hello there, 70% of Potting soil 20% of perlite 10% of small nuggets bark . A little of Slow release fertilizer, I use Osmocote 14-14-14. Thanks for watching my videos.
I have some very long cuttings but don't want to split them because I hear that it will take longer for them to flower if they are small. I'm hoping I can root them as they are, though I don't know if cutting the base in a v shape will speed things up. The skin seems very tough so it might impede root growth?
Very well explained. I would like to know what the music is in your video. It sounds oriental or Arabic, very beautiful. Can you give me the author and name of this beautiful piece of music please?
Hello Mala, Yes, P stands for Potassium….. After rooting, I separate each plant in 1 gallon pot…..and let it grow in there from 2-3 years…..small pot, help them bloom faster. Thanks for watching my videos. Thien
Hello!!! OMG!!! The most beautiful plant in the whole world!!! I lost my whole batch in the front of ,y door this winter .. May I ask you to send one leaf to start a new family? How's the best way to connect ? A Texas lady...

@ Thiet Nahn - When the leaves are cut into V shape do you allow some time to dry prior to soaking in water ? I already transplanted my first one but want to propagate many so I will lile to know because I would think freshly cut into water mean rot...the clear sap should dry- yes! Love your videos just subscribed 👍. Thank you!
Hello WJ Miranda, thanks for watching my videos and subscribe... Either way will work, if you put cutting leaves in water right away after cut V shape, result will be the same if you let them dry few weeks or few months.... Most people let them air dry few weeks, because they will plant them in the soil.....( cutting will be heal, and callus) So they will not be rotten....percent of successful is 70% max ,,,,, In the water right away, results could be 99% ,,,, Your choice, or maybe you can try both way, then you can find out,,,,,,just fun project... Thanks again for watching my videos. Thien

I have been using this method for a while with my pitaya cuttings. Usually takes about 8 weeks for roots to be ready for transplant. Just rooted my hookeri strictum epiphyllum in 4 weeks in moist coco coir! So easy!!
I have a 100 + year old Orchid Cactus. It blooms and is huge. I trim it in the Fall. I sure will be trying your method.
Hello carmen spring,
Wow, I have ever seen any Epiphyllum, orchid cactus over 100 years old...I would love to see the pictures,,,
Do you what kind of cactus you have? What is the color?

If I got a cutting in the mail, could I cut the v shape and put it in water to root, or should I do it another way?
Hello Joan Robertson,
When you get the cutting leaves, cut V shape, let air dry few days ( 7 days) in shaded area....then put in water...
In cold area , you should keep inside.....warm , and stability, roots will form faster.
Thanks for watching my videos and comments.

Good morning Rena Daen,
Thanks for watching my videos...

Merci d’avoir regardé mes videos.
Im confused. So how much did it grow in 1 yr?
Hello Tam Nguyen,

Propagation, just cut mature leaves, dips in rooting hormone, let it drying few days in shade area….then put in drying
Potting soil, spray water lightly…..that’ll.
Good luck

I live in Southern California with miserable soil.....I just stick them in hard soil and they grow and prosper in spite of me. Have them in the ground and planters. I ignore them until they show me how beautiful they are. How can I extend their blooms. On the plant they live for a day or two. In a vase don’t last long...any suggestions /recommendations more than welcomed.
Hello Marion,
Thanks for watching my videos.
Hello Marion,
6 years ago, my friend sent me one plant, I don’t know much about this cactus, but after one year , with little care , it gave me a lot of flowers. Then after that I started to looking that cactus, some from friends, some I bought from nursery, now I have more than 50 plants, all different colors.
For propagate, use cactus leaves,, you can check my videos “ THE FASTEST WAY, THE MOST EFFECTIVE WAY TO PROPAGATE EPIPHYLLUM “

Thank you for the video. Although i got good soil, my Epi has some disease on the leaves, and not very healthy. Please advise. Thank you very much.
Hello Anthony,
Good potting soil plus Perlite, will help drain water fast….
Diseases on leaves come from different causes….maybe soil mix too wet, maybe in too humidity areas…
I use Epsom Salt mixed with water and spaying on the leaves or you can use neem oil….
You should mix some slow fertilizer ( like Osmocote 14-14-14) , little Epsom salt in soil mix….help the plants growing stronger and healthier…
Thanks for watching my videos.

Can I leave the cuttings long? Or do I have to cut both sides?
Hello! I love your videos! I have a question, after you have rooted them in water, how far into the soil shound i put them?
In soil about 1”….thanks so much for watching my videos.
I'm wondering why you tie them upright, mine hang????
I also wondered that!
Very good
Thanks for watching my videos.....
i dont have chicken manure could i use peat moss mix?
You can use any fertilizer substitute for chicken manure, like cow manure, like Alaska fish fertilizer, like Miracle Grow.....
Perfect, I was trying to root my zigzag, but failed twice. Its a hope for me. Thanks.
Thanks a lot
Mc1Schol

Hello Giorgis,
If you use the branch, it may root, but take longer time then cutting….good luck.
Thanks for watching my videos.
Side note
That type of plant cuttings need to air dry for about 2 days which keeps any end rotting at bay when rooting in water
Will they still be available to take up water when put in the containers if they have calloused over?
Juliet Berry
Absolutely hon
Hello Juliet,
Yes, they will drink water , and will form roots.
1 direct in the water
2 let air dry at least 2 weeks ( not 2 days)
Then planted in soil .
Thanks

I have some very long cuttings but don't want to split them because I hear that it will take longer for them to flower if they are small. I'm hoping I can root them as they are, though I don't know if cutting the base in a v shape will speed things up. The skin seems very tough so it might impede root growth?
Very well explained. I would like to know what the music is in your video. It sounds oriental or Arabic, very beautiful. Can you give me the author and name of this beautiful piece of music please?

@ Thiet Nahn - When the leaves are cut into V shape do you allow some time to dry prior to soaking in water ? I already transplanted my first one but want to propagate many so I will lile to know because I would think freshly cut into water mean rot...the clear sap should dry- yes! Love your videos just subscribed 👍. Thank you!
Hello WJ Miranda, thanks for watching my videos and subscribe...
Either way will work, if you put cutting leaves in water right away after cut V shape, result will be the same if you let them dry few weeks or few months....
Most people let them air dry few weeks, because they will plant them in the soil.....( cutting will be heal, and callus)
So they will not be rotten....percent of successful is 70% max ,,,,,
In the water right away, results could be 99% ,,,,
Your choice, or maybe you can try both way, then you can find out,,,,,,just fun project...
Thanks again for watching my videos.
