Tom Penny was always one of my favorites. Still is.
Mark Appleyard being left off everyone's list is skateboarding malpractice. Dude made the most difficult tricks at the time look easy.
true. him and bastien were badass MFers.. bastien... guy was like a ninja.
Definitely an under appreciated legend
Was thinking the same thing!
Yep!
Facts
Ricky Oyola’s style is very underrated in my opinion. That one clip in eastern exposure 3 after he Nosegrinds some crusty ass steps and pushes into the street and does a perfect backside flip on flat in front of a car and immediately starts pushing switch is one of the greatest things I’ve ever seen
I wouldn’t say he’s underrated if your on the east coast. And grew up in that era you will most likely know and respect him. But I definitely agree with the fact that a lot of east coast pros weree getting over shadowed by the west coast.
I will admit I haven’t thought of him in awhile so kudos for bringing him up. I grow up watching those eastern exposures and mixtapes though. They were the best
Always took himself too seriously
Saw him at x games Philly 2000
this man fucks
I see lots of Jerry Hsu, but no Louie Barretta.
I will watch that guy all day every day, and never get bored.
I love them both as skaters, but if we talking style style, nobody does it quite like Jerry
@@Supemonk3y I always actually preferred Louie's sort of anti-style or whatever. He is erratic and wild, and I love that. Jerry is definitely more controlled in his style, but Louie was appealing for being the opposite.
The Gonz, Tony Trujillo, Daewon, Reynolds, and Hosoi. Trujillo's transition skating in that Transworld video to Kickstart My Heart still hypes me up to skate more than anything
Oh, hell yeah! Can't beat Tony. Hewitt is pretty decent, I think.
Yea, you can't mention style w/o Hosoi.
no tom penny? ..... tom penny basically invented steez.
@@NineteenEighty8 You're not wrong. It's impossible not to think of him in the radlads footage just flying over boxes as if nobody is watching
Old head choices
Damn…this is tough. Imma pick my my era when i started skating(no order):
1.) Ishod Wair / Skates smooth
2.) T-Funk / Skates fast
3.) Evan Smith / Skates free
4.) Franky Villani / Skates unpredictable
5.) Cory Kennedy / Skates fun
Thats a great list 👌🏻
yo wtf villani is my last name
Evan Smith almost made my list. Dude kills.
You young
You guys had the WhatYouth issue behind you but he wasn’t mentioned - one of the all-time greats style-wise, Dylan Rieder. 🙌🏻
Highly underrated comment
RIP to the legend
God bless 🙏
Yes, dude, 100%. Can’t believe I overlooked him.
Kenny Anderson, Grant Taylor, Ronnie Creager, Tom Penny, Chris Miller
Creager
Chris Miller's name was floating around in my head too. He barely missed my list.
#1 JOHN CARDIEL (watch sight unseen) 2.Peter Smolik (criminally underrated) 3. Gonz 4. Andy Roy (always got me amped to see) 5. i was gonna say Kalis. but now that crob mentioned Mike Carroll... they get a tie for fifth in my books. PLEASE GET CARDIEL ON THE SHOW! dude is such a legend. he deserves all the respect.
Thats a pretty solid list!!! Smolik was a beast in his prime
Smolik absolutely.
Cardiel episode way overdue.
100% on Smolik. I had to bump him, but he is up there. Savage and good pick.
i love cardiels style
Brent Atchely has one of the cleanest styles in the history of skating...hands down! I think people forget about how non chalant he was and how damn good of a street vert skater he was, dude was a pimp on the board!
totally forgot about him. i remember when i first started skating my friend had one of his element boards. nostalgic af.
@@RickySpanish168 badass!!!! Thats a piece of skate history right there!!! Brent is literally my reasoning for my style of skating, it looks like he doesnt care and yet still pulls shit off crazy clean plus they put public enemy no.1 as his song for his part and that made me immidiately see the dude as a god in skating because it fit the persona , bro was rockin dunks before it was cool to skate them
I was literally about to comment Brent that boy skate an make it look effortless 👌
Never heard of the guy and Ive been skating since 1999. Crazy
Yuuup. Brent Atchley definitely on my list, I would get so hyped to go skate after watching his vid parts.
Just to throw one out to the UK Danny Wainwright always made tricks look amazing. So much pop.
So much pop too!
Bryan Herman is by far, the most underrated skater when it comes to style. Herman has one of the best styles I've ever seen and I've been skating since 1993.
So stoked to hear Ray Barbee!! I thought he might make the list. I picked up a Krooked Ray Barbee re-issue (I assume just the graphic) about a month ago.
In my opinion Mike Mo changed the game when it comes to cleanliness. I think he should be in that 5
100%
The reason floaty became so prominent in skating now.
Jason Lee, Gino, Natas, Rick Howard & Julian Stranger.
Goofy is easier in the eyes.
Kenny A, D Garcia and Hufnagel honourable mention.
"Goofy is easier in the eyes." so true! I thought i was the only one who thinks like that. :D maybe because of the reading direction?
Kenny Anderson
Heath, Mike Carroll, Gravette, Cole, Marc Johnson, Arto and Antwuan. Couldn’t pick 5 but I narrowed it down to 7
Gravette is a REALLY great dude. Local at my park, and he always Gave out shoes and boards to us, always a great time.
Maybe reynolds over gravette but gravette is gnarly
Jason Lee, Guy Mariano, Donny Barley, Gershon Mosley, Josh Kalis
Fucking Barley man!
East coast powerhouse!
Bryan Herman, Kerry Getz, Stevie Williams, Jerry Hsu.. all amazing style and underrated. You can tell someone has good style just by the way they push. Peter Smolik also had great style, and underrated as well. Tons of amazing style in the late 90's.
You named so many guys on my list, I had to revise!
I’ve been watching Skateboarding for 20 years now and Tom Asta has the cleanest style I’ve ever seen
Bryan Herman's is very similar
TOM PENNY is #1 when it comes to style/steez!
This should have been everyone's #1
@@FunTimesPockets Penny should be the example of style.. Then start the list it's the only way it can be done fairly.. Kelly gets it 😂 😂
I did my list before anybody and I gotta say hearing Ray Barbie come up shocked me cause his style is a perfect vision of fun and I hate no complies but he got me out here trying to learn them
Corona's finest
No complies are fun
Leo Romero, Mark Appleyard, Jon Allie, Heath Kirchart, and Jerry Hsu. No particular order. Bonus: Dustin Dollin, sketchy is the new clean!
Dollin! Sketchy IS the ”new” clean so cant forget about Ali Boulala. His real SORRY ender before the 25stair attempts is fucking gnarly!
Very good list
chris colbourn, miles silva, ishod, deedz, john dilo. I'm old, but I like all newer heads.
miles silvia has a dope style
Hey John, glad to see you appreciate Deedz skating as well!
Mark Gonzales, Duane Peters, Christian Hosoi, Neil Blender, and Jeff Phillips
1 - Ishod Wair
2 - Arto Saari
3 - Grant Taylor
4 - Kevin Bradley
5 - Peter Smolik
Kien Lieu. That dudes style always hit me good. Just flyin over big shit all day 🤘🤘
Antwuan Dixon is my #1 pick. The rest are in no particular order: Tom Asta, Bryan Herman, Daewon Song/Chris Haslam (I can't choose between them, but I still need my last pick because it's...) Rodney Mullen.
Honorable mention: Grant Taylor
This is pretty close to mine. I'd need a spot for luan somewhere tho
@@robthomas793 It was hard as hell for me to leave out him or Shane O' 😅😅😅
@@gimpybiscuit3673 You can sleep on oneil for sure. Also wanna see Cory Kennedy get some love on this topic
@@robthomas793 Oh my god...how could I forget Cory!!!! Dude...
Rodney is an absolute legend and innovater, one of the best to ever step on a board but I never personally liked his style.
1.Dylan Rieder
2.Heath Kirchart
3.Marc Johnson
4.Alex Olson
5.Andrew Reynolds
Super strong list.
You can really feel the passion and love for skateboarding in this conversation 😌
1. Luan (king of pop)
2. MJ (tech and innovation)
3. Reynolds (big stairs/gaps/rails)
4. Brian Wenning (steezy mannies)
5. Daewon (taking everything to a next level)
You forgot Nyjah Huston at #1
Finally somebody mentioned Wenning! 🙏👍💥
I was at Street League when Luan kickflipped the low box and I was looking at it and I still couldn't believe my eyes.
I love Louie Lopez's style, he doesn't do the most difficult tricks of whatever but he makes everything look so good
Cardiel, Taylor, Succiu, Gonz , Haslam/Daewon 😬..... there's too many amazing styles hahaha, so hard to lock in just 5!... Man I even had to change some lol.
also jeron's list is fire as heck
Dylan Rieder (catwalk-skate)
Louie Lopez (blends into the streets so well)
Luan Oliveira (nobody stomps like that)
Ben Nordberg (no arms)
Austyn Gillette (faaaaaaaaaaaassssst)
My list in -no -order-
1. Mike Mo Capaldi
2. Deshawn Jordan
3. Paul Rodriguez
4. Tom Asta
5. Dylan Rieder
Who else made a list after this video? 😂
I picked skaters that they didn’t.
Ooooh. Dylan was a good one that I somehow forgot!
Dylan is the number one
Good list!
Yeah Dylan was the first skater I thought of when I read the question and I was surprised no one said him.
A couple dudes who I never hear in these style conversations are Curren Caples and Grant Taylor for the same reason. They just look so fluid and smooth. They have the style of the og skateboarders when skateboarding was just pumping on banks on a 2x4 just modernized and they rip. They just look so laid back. They’re the definition of style with ease.
Grant Taylor rips.
Greyson Fletcher and Levi Brown also would fit this list.
Trevor Colden, Daniel Shimizu, Jerry Hsu, Gino, and Gustav Tonneson
Kenny Anderson, Dennis Busenitz, Mike Mo, Guy Mariano, Sean Malto that’s my Top 5 list
Penny, Dennis, Appleyard, Wes Kremer, Hensley.
I forgot about Wes. This is a good list.
I'm glad Jeron is there to bring up names that I recognize. Even his picks were kinda later names though. Need some representation from '86-'91. Neil Blender (care free, seemingly effortless style), Matt Hensley (tweaked his tricks more than anyone; badass meloncholly), Steve Cab (more technical and stylishly combined than anyone), Mike Vallely (for his relentless attack style), and Christian Hosoi (surfer on wheels).
Cab, Hosoi, Blender obvious picks - the kids on the Nine Club need to learn their history!
Can't go wrong with Carroll. And MJ has been my fav since I seen him on the cover of Transworld back in 04 after winning SOTY. Glad you mentioned Howard because he crossed my mind.
PJ Ladd, Sierra Fellers, John Motta, Kyle Walker, Miles Silvas
Super tough list to put together. My very particular order. P.J., Arto, Rick McCrank, Ed T and Jason Lee. Bonus = Danny Way
Amazing insight.. very Holyfield.. very very honest and just pure and right like crib would say.. just good stuff.. gets the mind going
Tom Penny, Alex Moul, Daewon , Mullen and Vallely... can you tell im a big pant small wheel era lol
Just remembered. My true list in no particular order.
5 Nick trapasso
4 Tyler bledsoe(ten years ago)
3 yuto horigomi
2 Mike mo capaldi
1 Shane O'Neal
Bledsoe kills it harder now!
Great list Shane is my #1
Mf what da fuck
You knew Andy Anderson was gonna come through with some random ass names 😂
yeah because andy is a clown and doesnt understand style/steez.. obviously by his trick selection.
worst guest for this question to come up
@@NineteenEighty8 u prolly one of them corny nyjah red bull fan boys. && is an artist dont get it twisted w/athletes. ✌🏿
I got nothing against Andy at all. I fully appreciate his eccentric approach to skateboarding. I was just noting that of course he wasn’t gonna say “Reynolds, Koston, Gonz, MJ, etc.” Of course he was gonna say some dudes most have never heard of -and that’s all good too!
@@williamsmith1211 hell no and nyjah is sponsored by monster, not red bull... nyjah is the most overrated contest skater in sb history.. he does the same 3 tricks OVER AND OVER... im more of a braden hoban and jamie foy fan.
#1 Tom Penny
#2 Mike Mo
#3 Andrew Reynolds
#4 Antoine Dixon
#5 Spanky or Bryan Herman
Antwuan
Lizard King!!! kickflips had sooooo much pop!! and those drops he used to do were so fckn crazy. twaun for sure. Reynolds always looks so dialed and methodical but also on the verge of losing it. Kirchart, Muska, Busenitz, Westgate, TNT, Herman, Cole, Jamie. omg all so good
Top 5 for me as someone who started skating in the mid 2000s
Daewon
Koston
Mike Mo
Kenny Anderson
And Nick Trapasso who had the best style in the world in AND NOW !
trapasso #1
So glad Andy said Jimmy Wilkins
I usually hate podcasts but I fucking love The Nine Club.
Peter Smolik, David Matthews, Bobby Puleo, Scott Johnston, Mike York
-Antwuan Dixon
-David Gravette
-Nick Trapasso
-Gilbert Crockett
-Jon Allie
Honorable mentions: Jimmy Carlin, Dennis Busenitz Ed Templeton, Heath Kirchart, Lewis Marnell
Busenitz and Marnell!
In no order and based on style only (not necessarily my top 5 favourite skaters ):
Lucas Puig
Jerry Hsu
Marc Johnson
Mike Mo
PJ Ladd
Props to Andy Robertson having Gou Miyagi in his top 5, I remember watching his videos as a kid and it blew my young mind!!
No particular order…
-Cardiel
-Arto
-Barley
-Oyola
-Getz
Honorable mentions…
-Janoski
-BA
-Burnquist
Rob Welch
This is a good one
@@jacobfriedland1730 Hell yeah. Loved seeing him skate Pier 7. I started skating in ‘94. Dude made a basic noseslide on a ledge, look so sick.
@@fadedsincedayone 🙏
@@fadedsincedayone 🙏
I understand Chris's final words on style being separate from innovation. A lot of the highly technical innovators (Chris Cole, Rodney, even Andy Anderson himself) have pretty stiff, rigid style because their focus is elsewhere so they don't really prioritize feeling or flow as much as analysis and precision. Just two different approaches to skateboarding
Man I've never seen Chris Cole's back bend even a degree forward. Man's posture is unrivaled lol
Donny Barley, Cairo Foster, Matt Rodriguez, Karl Watson, Tom Penny ….bonus Casper Brooker
Ethan Fowler, Reynolds, Greco, Austin Stephens, Spanky
People really forget about Brent Atchley
Burnside King! 👑
As soon as Steezus said Devine Calloway I said YESSSS DUDE! Loved that guy's style. Used to watch his Contrast part at my friends apt all the time back in middle school (man I miss 2005...)
I also love that 4/5 of C-Rob's picks were all in Yeah Right lmao0o
josh kalis, milton martinez, wade desarmo, bryan herman, erik ellington. the way they do tricks are just beautiful and unique.
My number one will always be Ryan Gallant. So butter
Jim Greco, Dustin Dollin, Erik Ellington, Andrew Reynolds & Ali Boulala my top 5 💛
What the hell boa
My top five styles:
Geoff Rowley
Dashawn Jordan
Marc Johnson
Jerry Hsu
Andrew Reynolds
Solid list.
Jerry hsu is def on my list!!! Dudes under rated
Tom Penny was the king of style in that era and Shaun Sheffey the decade before that.
Sheffey got robbed!
Antwuan, Herman, Penny, Hsu, Luan, Daewon, Cardiel, and MJ. Bonus: T-Funk. I know this is more than 5, this is the most I could narrow it down. (Edit: Indecisiveness.)
The late Harold Hunter needs to be mentioned. R.i.p big homie!!!
Surprised nobody said Jamie Thomas. That dude wrote the book on stairs and handrails. Not super technical, but he wasn’t scared of anything and that never gets old.
I was thinking Thomas too. I do think he’s always had a real style, but also just the way his moves and his attack on big gaps, etc., kinda became the standard way of doing things. Same way that Hosoi made very look amazing and effortless.
Salman Agah, Brian Anderson, John Rattray, Milton Martinez and Andrew Reynolds! There is a theme running here, excepting Reynolds! OH, I forgot, honourable mention: Greg Lutzka!
Mike Carroll was one of my instructors at Woodward PA. in the early 90’s.
First, I sincerely believe Andy Anderson is Animal Chin.
He just embodies all of skateboarding. All styles from all era's, but with his own individual style, all skills from all disciplines, but with a whimsical playfulness that makes it look effortless.
As for the question of best style...
In no order: Mark Gonzalez, Stevie Williams, Chris Haslam, Christian Hosoi, Dennis Busenitz
Honourable mentions: Dylan Rieder, Lance Mountain, Andy Anderson, PJ Ladd, Tom Penny
Special Mentions: Bastien Salabanzi, Bobby De Keyzer, Rodney Mullen, Tony Hawk, Chris Miller
Guest Starring: Lukas Puig, Jamie Foy, Daewon Song, Evan Smith, Yuto Horigome
with Special Effects by: Richie Jackson
Now THATS a list
Natas,Duane Peters, Kerry getz, Dawson song and Richie jackson
Tom Penny might be the reason I ever skated.
Vallely stands out in my head. Its like all the pent up aggression taken out in skate form.
Killian Martin stands out - it feels like I'm watching and artist paint.
Brent Atchely was a vibe and a half.
And I gotta say Andy Anderson. Living life style.
So many! Agree with everyone you guys said. Skating since early 90s, but watched some older videos early on, and everything since. Spanning that whole time, for me the instant & unquestionable person on the list is actually Bryan Herman. He’s easy. The other 4 take me some time, but I have an easy long-list to whittle down. Might go Frankie Hill for one of them. That’s all I can say without spending too much time on this comment.
I was thinking Frankie Hill too. Big fat ollie one foot.
So many other things, too. I also loved gonz early on & still do, but I think Frankie is my Gonz 🤭
Peak Tom Penny for the hands down win, then in no particular order... Bastien, Antwuan, Reynolds and BA 🤙
Was shocked to not see Tom in more of the comments on here. Dude just looks so lax. Best style hands down
@@kennyconnors9513 yeah I guess he's too OG for a lot of younger people to be aware of him and his effortless style huh! Yup, I'll always have a special place in my heart for that nollie cab he did over the box at Radlands back in the day 😄👌
@@pixiponpon I agree. I was lucky to start skating when I did in 2004. It was still close enough to when all the legends were still killing it, while also witnessing all the crazy progression in the mid 2000's. I think the best era of skateboarding was the early and mid 2000's
@@kennyconnors9513 yeah early 2K was an awesome time for sure! There was just so much going on in skating and we were spoilt for prime legendary talent back then as well as the then up-and-comers... we had the likes of Penny, Koston, Carroll, MJ, Reynolds, Jamie Thomas, Kerry, Getz, BA and so many more on one side... and then younger dudes like PJ Ladd, P-Rod, Bam, Sheckler, Bastien etc all coming up behind them... good days!
1. Shuriken Shannon
2. Bryan Herman
3. Mark Appleyard
4. Tom Penny
5. Daewon
Nate Jones, Matt Milligan, Guy, Tom Penny, and Dylan Rieder. Bonus Koston, and Nora
damn yeah Dylan Reider for sure
I'd go with Geoff rowly, Mark Appleyard, p rod , Kenny Anderson, and pj ladd
Yeah dude! Geoff is gnarly, love Appleyard, and Kenny is definitely one of the flowiest on 7 ply!
You forgot Nyjah Huston at #1
Todd Falcon, his Big Brother interview was hilarious, I hope its online somewhere.
Y’all keep the innovation going, so awesome to see all the young guns keeping it reall Street, vert, ,park.. and no one mentions the girls and women that are killing it now!!!!
Westgate, Neen, Rieder, Cardiel, Busenitz
It's so hard to narrow it down to 5. I guess if really had to it'd probably be ishod, Shane O'Neil, Mike mo, Gonz, and Prod. But that's just off the top of my at the moment, there's so many more.
JB gillet, Wes Kremer, Tyler Surrey, Danny Hamaguchi, Jerry Hsu.
Ok ok ok here goes my list, and it’s a pretty unconventional one I think but they all molded my taste in Skateboarding at different phases of my life in which I actively skated.
1. Gershon Mosley style as seen in the Globe Opinion video
2. Jake Johnson style as seen in the Alien Workshop video Mindfield
3. PRod style as seen in the Forecast video
4. Bastien Salabanzi style as seen in the first Sorry video
5. Dennis Durrant style as seen in the Circa video Its TIme
Man I feel you on Gershon and Dennis.
Don’t forget Kenny Hughes!
@@kenrocker7427 Wow that’s crazy!! I actually completely forgot about Kenny Hughes. Yeah he was a ripper for sure
Tom Penny, Chad Muska, Kareem Campbell, Steve Williams, Andrew Reynolds
So subjective... We all like what we like. Mark Gonzales, Natas, Eric Dressen, John Cardiel, Dennis Busenitz
I could've added 5 more bonus easily, ED has a sick style for sure, obviously JC as well.
@@seekah1 at least 5 more maybe 10. So many rippers
Rob welsh, Brian wenning, Javier Sarmiento, Tom penny, Ryan gallant, Guy Mariano, Marc Johnson
Ok so to mention a few that was not mentioned and need to be:
Kevin Bradley, Louie Lopez, Paul Rodriguez, ishod wair, chad timtim, darrell stanton, Stefan janoski. Could go on, but yea, style matters for sure!!
Alva, T-Mag, Cab, McGill, Mullen, Heath, Reynolds, Arto, Andy Anderson Today: Zach Doeling, Alexander Risvad, Levi Löffelberger
Cardiel, Rodrigo Teixiera, Brandon Westgate, Bob Burnquist, Rick McCrank. Couldn't help but throw out the first five that popped into my head. My top 5 styles would change every time you asked me though.
That’s a solid list! All heavy hitters.
tiago lemos, carlos ribeiro, luan oliveira, boo johson, ishod wair
and honorable mention to Tx
Tony T, Raven Tershay, Milton Martinez, Colin Provost or David Gravette since they have semi similar styles, & TOMMY GUNZZZZ!!!
but can’t forget cardiel 🔨🔨🔨
Andrew Reynolds & Lucas Puig as my bonus
1. Dylan Rieder
2. Chris Cole
3. Tom Penny
4. Alex Olson
5. Max Palmer
this topic aside Chris Cole is the greatest street skater of all time period imo :p
@@DonnieEls I wholeheartedly agree, easily my second favorite skater ever, Mullen beats himcause thps
i was very happy they bought up antwan, he's style was just the best
Jason Lee, Brandon Westgate, David Gonzales, Miles Silvas and Antwuan Dixon for me.
Reynolds’s, Danny way, Trujillo, daewon, penny, honorable mention is Geoff rowley, Joslin and heath kirchart
