    I passed my Part 107 exam by studying your course recently. Got my temporary certificate today and went out to fly. During the shoot, in an area where I was authorized to fly in by the FAA through LAANC, I got hit with DJI’s GeoFencing system and I couldn’t believe I was now having to ask a Chinese company for authorization to fly in the United States where I’m a Certified Remote Pilot.
    This is such a major inconvenience.

    Great info. I do not understand why DJI continues to try and control air space with this geo zone stuff. I thought the FAA was in charge of air space in the United States and clearance to fly controlled on LAANC. I feel that DJI should end their geo zone program altogether and leave control with the FAA. Ok I am off the soap box, keep the great content coming.

      The thing is LAANC does not prohibit you from physically flying the drone, only decides if you are legal. Even then, LAANC only covers controlled airspace. It does not cover NOTAMS and TFRs. DJI accounts for those.
      Also there are areas that are G space, but there is an airport nearby that a newbie might not realize what he's getting into.

    • @danman32
      @danman32 Год назад +4

      What would be cool is if DJI could auto-unlock upon LAANC approval. They were going to be a LAANC provider and integrate that into the app. But with DJI's country of origin, I'm sure that was quickly squashed.

    I'm Part 107 and live / work mostly in a LAANC Approval Zone. I haven't had to take these steps and just did a test on location. I used ALOFT for my LAANC Authorization, then on the DJI Fly App, I normally get a pop-up screen with a GeoZone Authorization that I simply agree to. TIP: If you use a VPN turn it OFF before connecting to the app or it won't let you agree. You should be free to fly after that, and of course fly within your rules to the area. Hope that helps.

    They even allow to unlock the red restricted zones around the airport using the custom polygon unlocking if you have a LAANC approval.For example as mentioned in some other videos by Pilot institute you can have an area with a 100 Ft LAANC clearance that's marked red on the map in Fly-safe. I had to upload a screenshot of the LAANC clearance and got approved within 10 min.

Being forced to take the additional steps of taking screen shots and uploading them to a corporate server [that is required to share data with a communist government] and then sit around waiting for them to grant you the privilege of using a product you supposedly "own" when the FAA itself had already granted you permission to fly is INSANE

    I requested and was granted a LAANC authorization to shoot a real estate listing up to 200 ft. AGL within the glide path of a major local airport, and was surprised to discover that the location is outside the scope of DJI's geo zones. Lucky me. But curious to find the discrepancy between the FAA and DJI, when I'd assumed that DJI would pretty closely parallel the FAA's designated zones.

    Our company encountered something regarding this that nobody seems to have an answer for. Terrain Following in unlocked DJI Geo Zones. At this moment we are unable to perform our mapping mission (survey company) because although we have unlocked the Geo Zone up to 400ft, we need to terrain follow in this same area going up approximately 1,000ft from the take off point. We will always be under 400AGL but the unlocked Geozone only will allow our M300 to go 400ft above takeoff elevation. The GeoZone doesn't take into account our need for terrain following. This is a pretty big oversight for those doing topography mapping with the P1 or L1 and M300 systems.

    • @popeyetsm2750
      @popeyetsm2750 8 месяцев назад +1

      Then why not begin your mapping mission flight at the highest point? As the (400 ft.) altitude constraint relates to the takeoff point, and as there are no "negative" altitude constraints (i.e.: if you begin at the highest point of your planned mission, the remainder of the flight should be at ever-decreasing altitudes), that would seem to resolve the problem, no?
      I'm not saying this is correct, I'm simply throwing the suggestion out there to gather your opinion.

    I figured I would make a separate post to hopefully help others instead of this info getting burried in replies.
    I have a class e airspace around an area that I have to fly for work along a river. The FAA doesnt care about my flying because the floor of the class e airspace is 700 feet agl, whereas I cant fly above 400 feet agl. I was constantly having to submit unlock requests for the dji authorization zone that were approved immediately.
    I submitted an unlock request for the zone through the dji website. once it was approved, I I mailed dji with that as a reference. They gave me an annual approval for this zone. It appeared in my controller menu and I downloaded it to my aircraft.
    Overall it was an easy process since I did it from home before trying to fly in this area. However it could have been harder to do if I was in the field without cell coverage.
    Its inexcusable that dji felt the need to put this into place. Give me a reminder but dont make me have to rely on having cell service to use my equipment. ESPECIALLY as a part 107 operator.

    Great video, learned a lot. I have a question that I have not seen in all my training (new Part 107 pilot). I applied for an 'authorization' to fly in my area near a military base, class c air space. I received a 'waiver' for more time than requested, higher altitude, etc. I requested a radius of 1/4 NM and the waiver changed it to 'Blanket Area / Wide Area" What does blanket area, wide area actually mean? I have done a few searches and did not find anything specific. Thanks for any info. Always like your videos, and the news briefs.

    • @PilotInstitute
      @PilotInstitute  2 года назад +6

      Wide area means they gave you access to the entire airspace. You need to read all the details of your approval but it's possible they gave you access to the airspace as long as you stay at or below the published grid. That's something they do in certain areas for airspace that's not part of LAANC.

    Yes, and this makes the airspace safer, how? The unlocking still is unstable around areas where the airspace shifts from say, class C to Class D and since it only accepts one unlock at a time, your DJI drone can suddenly decide to land when it detects the new airspace, whether it's in the middle of a road, 1000 feet from you in a muddy field, or over the water...and yes, it takes control from you and lands. This has happened to me 4 times and it's not safe. In two cases, I was able to catch it, running out in roads to do it (luckily no traffic at the time) and the others, the GPS realized it really wasn't in the new airspace a few feet off the ground and I was able to get control before it crashed.

    And I don't know why, here in the USA, that we can't give them our FAA authorization number from the LAANC system, or submit an email authorization from a military base / airport that does not participate in the LAANC system. I've also got a current 2 year wide area airspace waiver for a large military base here in San Antonio. There ought to be a way to import that waiver into DJI's database so that they know that my drones are allowed to fly there, with proper advance notice to the ATC. Just another reason why my Autel Evo 2 Pro is my go to drone.

    Thanks for this video. I was able to get my first authorization under the class C airport , GSP in South Carolina . But they "Unlock By Altitude" came back with 500 Meters for the entire airport. I take that to mean 1640 feet which is 676 AGL. The elevation of the airport is 964 with a TPA for light aircraft is 1964 but rotorcraft is at 1464. This seems wrong and dangerous. Am I missing something?

      @@PilotInstitute I agree. I am also an airplane pilot and have flow through this airspace often, so I immediately recognized that “DJI Fly-Safe authorization” was both dangerous and illegal. This makes “DJI’s Fly-Safe” process the opposite of safe. First, they lock the drone, then have a process to bypass the lock which disregards the law and the safety. What is the point of locking the drone in the first place? I would suggest that you add a clear disclaimer to this video that “the Fly-Safe authorization” actually authorizes nothing and it simply unlocks the drone.

    Question about unlocking for extended periods (up to ONE YEAR is stated is possible on the DJI website), using the Custom Unlock option. I have 107 certification and would like to unlock the Authorization Zone that extends out 5 miles from the runways at a local (Nebraska, USA) airport. This airport is surrounded by Class E air space from the surface, during operating hours, and reverts to Class G after hours, but of course DJI's zones are in place here 24/7. I frequently fly in the outer perimeters of this area which always needs LAANC approval, but if I'm in that extended runway zone (Blue auth zone on the DJI Geo Zone Map) I have to go through the tedious process you describe here. When I select the Custom option to unlock for a longer period (I'd like to unlock for the max one year), it asks me to upload documentation. I guess my bottom line question, will they accept my FAA Remote Pilot Certification as acceptable documentation for the extended unlock? I guess I could just try it, but thought I'd ask you first to avoid rejection :) Thanks!

      I did end up getting that one-year unlock from DJI, so to answer my own question; where the application for unlock offers the option to upload documentation, I submitted two items -- my 107 certification & a screen shot of the area showing the vast majority of the "Authorization Zone" is eligible for immediate LAANC approval (supporting my statement to that effect) . The approval of my one-year unlock request was received 11 minutes after submission.

    I really appreciate this video. I have flown in controlled airspace many times with LAANC approval. Last weekend I drove 2 hours to a location to get some particular shots at golden hour. I knew it was in controlled airspace, so when I arrived, I requested LAANC approval, which was instantly granted. My Air 2s would not fly. I got the screen with the blue box and the "unlock" button, but tapping it did nothing. I also went into settings and tried from there, to no avail. I wasted a 4 hour round-trip and the effort of contacting the property owner for permission to shoot there.
    I have never run into this before. Apparently the controlled airspace I've flown in the past was not in DJI's geo-zones. My first impulse was to get on RUclips and find a suitable non-DJI alternative for my Air 2s, which I love. I still might.

All of this is to COOPERATE with the US FAA. It's a good thing and helps save the hobby. More and more idiots not following these rules would inevitably destroy the hobby by making it illegal to fly anything anywhere due to the lack of these controls. I applaud DJI for these efforts.
