First up, let's talk a pretty big story that happened at the end of last week after we published news update: DJI has ended their “Sync Flight Data” function as of this week.
If you’re unfamiliar with it, this feature allows flight records to be synced to the DJI cloud and imported into other apps such as AirData UAV or Aloft Air Control.
AirData and Air Control have posted information on workarounds, with AirData utilizing their app to synch data from the drone, and Aloft allowing for manual uploads of flight logs.
This move by DJI is only applicable in the United States and is likely a response to repeated accusation that the data is made available to the Chinese government. With the end of the program, law makers will now need to find new excuses to try to ban DJI.
For more info, check out the links below.
The Government Accountability Office (GAO) has published a report this week about the implementation of remote ID.
The GAO found that while RID is now mandatory, the FAA has not spent time educating law enforcement on the technology, with many departments reporting they knew nothing about it.
The study also looked at law enforcement access to RID and aircraft registration, and the GAO noted that there is not currently an interface allowing law enforcement to access registration information.
The report also mentions network remote ID technologies as a necessary solution to help law enforcement to "access real-time information needed to track and investigate unauthorized drone activity." . The report also stated that “Stakeholders representing a commercial drone group said that there is a general lack of willingness by industry to develop network-based Remote ID”.
The GAO issued 3 recommendations to the FAA;
develop resources to assist state, tribal, and local LE to use remote ID;
develop a plan and timeline for a remote ID interface;
identify a path forward for how to provide real-time, networked data about the location and status of drones.
Note that Network Remote ID is a topic of discussion in the new FAA Reauthorization Act. We’ll keep you updated if we see more.
Fourth up, we have a lawsuit from the Michigan Coalition of Drone Operators against the University of Michigan.
The lawsuit claims that the University has rules attempting to govern airspace above the campus and that these rules violate state and federal laws.
We’ll have to wait and see how this one plays out but good on the Michigan Coalition for fighting for drone operators and their unencumbered access to the airspace. Hopefully this sends a message to other organizations trying to illegally restrict airspace access, sadly lots of universities are in this bag.
Air 4 Leaks???
Lastly, 3 first responders associations have joined hands and published opposition to the DFR Act and the Countering CCP Drones Act.
Drone Responders, the Law Enforcement Drone Association (LEDA), and the Airborne Public Safety Association (APSA) have issued a joint press release in opposition to Representative Stefanik's proposals. Наука
the dumb and dumber meme killed me lol
I actually laughed out loud!
The DJI ban is ridiculous in that that Government doesn't prevent military tech from reaching the pubic & the pubic doesn't want to wait 70-100+ years for access to the data.
Yes the government won’t be accessing my pubic area as well here here brother!
So, will all the ECMs (mfg in China) that are installed in most autos result in cars being banned?
@@rigdoc3948 I think they win WWIII so the ban is just the losing-side crying. We can't support a Government that intentionally waits 70-100+ years to advance our cultures.
Good morning, thank you for the update, appreciate all the time and energy you and the team invest
I don't catch many of your updates, but they are always informative and insightful. Thanks for the great work!
Seems like most of the comments here are really appalling. Thank you Greg for the content. It helps to know the news on drones.
@PilotInstitue... Greg, the lawsuit against the University of Michigan is NOT about airspace or FAA jurisdiction. It has absolutely nothing to do with the Long Lake Township v Maxon case either (that you spoke of). Rather the lawsuit is focused on Michigan's state UAS preemption law that expressly disallows political subdivisions (cities, counties, townships, schools, and universities) from creating and enforcing their own drone ordinances. MCL 259.305 is the law. The Michigan Coalition of Drone Operators (MCDO) has previously sued Genesee County and Ottawa County and won at every court including the Michigan Court of Appeals to create a statewide precedent. The University of Michigan has threatened drone operators with arrest, fines, and jail time for even launching, landing, or operating on the public campus. By state law they are NOT able to do so. That is what this lawsuit is about. Your synopsis is incorrect and should be modified to communicate the actual issue. This is a critical case as it will serve as an example for the 17 other states that have UAS preemption laws.
Very interesting! I believe here in CT we have the same. Do you have a list of those states or know where I can find one? (Now that I know there's a term for this type of law I can try searching that, just curious if you know of any good resources.) I'll be curious to hear how it turns out.
Thanks Ryan. I added a correction segment in this week's news update.
@@PilotInstitute, many thanks!
It's time to start gearing up for a class action lawsuit to put a hold on the drone bill.
I've been working with law enforcement helicopter pilots and frankly it's surprising how little they know about drone laws and IMO it's a gap that definitely needs to be filled. They tend to see them as a nuisance, most have not even heard of Remote ID and feel threatened by drones because according to them, most refuse to cede the airspace and nearly all are far above 400' AGL. It feels like we have work to do on this front.
You are surprised at how little a police knows about actual laws? That's funny. They don't need to know the laws. They are given "AuThOriTy" to make on the spot judgements, it's a "sort em out later" approach to CONTROLLING the population.
Great information Greg! Thank you for all you do for the hobby!
Thank you so much for putting this together. Appreciate your efforts to keep people informed.
I do enjoy your bloopers. Looking forward to the not yet first Annual best bloopers of Greg! Safe Travels to you and the crew.
Awesome Greg. Thanks for keeping us informed.
The DJI ban bill will ultimately pass. Now that it has been attached to the NDAA (National Defense Authorization Act) which is a much larger bill that has wide bipartisan support. We need to get this bill amended to have the DJI ban taken out of this legislation. If you're a drone pilot and haven't read the bill I highly recommend you do. The March amendment also includes DJI cameras and microphones. All communication equipment. I've got a friend meeting with our representatives next week in DC about this issue. He's asking for personal stories of how this ban will damage our businesses. I'm also going to begin the process of setting up meetings with legislators to bring the faces of those affected to the forefront of these politician's attention. There are drone owners out there who have hundreds of thousands of dollars tied up in their drone businesses who will wind up paying on loans for equipment for the next 5-10 years on equipment they can't even use. If we don't stand together on this we will lose. Hoping this bill won't pass, not educating ourselves on what's actually going on and not letting our voices be heard will devastate the businesses we've worked to create. Anyone interested in getting involved to stop this ban email me at forjdmedia@gmail.com
This is too big for the drone community to not join together and stop this attempt to put us out of business. Click the link below to the Drone Advocacy Website. You can fill in your information and it will send the pre written email to your Senators and Representatives voicing your opposition to this ban droneadvocacyalliance.com/take-action/
I'm a drone pilot and a huge DJI fan, at least until recently. We produce our boating safety videos mainly with DJI gear that I personally advocated for. I'm heavily invested in DJI gear from cameras to drones and microphones. Recently, I've been hindered by the Action 4's IMU being overly sensitive to engine vibrations. This affects stabilization, especially the ability to maintain a level horizon. DJI Support in the last two months have done 3 things, they promised resolution, ignored the issue and wasted my time! Horizon balancing is an advertised feature of the camera and the reason we purchased OA4 cameras. Not one DJI sponsored review of the OA4 even attempts to test it and most sponsored reviewers ignore the issue when questioned about it. They're basically pushing flawed products onto the market and have enough clout to hide it. When it comes to their drones, the market has become a DJI monopoly. No long term good comes from a monopoly. We need a healthy competitive market. I'm not saying the ban is the best way to go about it. However, DJI has already strategically created alliances and partnerships that will most probably help them maintain a market lead in the USA with or without a ban.
A ton of great info. Thank you to you and your team, Greg, for keeping us informed!
I just sent a reply to my state rep, added more personal details how this bill will impact me and every other current or future drone operator or business that will benefit from sUAS usage!
Thanks for keeping us aware & uodated!
Thank you for your continued research and bringing of highly relevant news and information to the larger drone community!
Always appreciate your insight. Thanks Greg.
Excellent update, Greg! Thank you
I was flying my drone near the Michigan stadium in the fall of 2023, then three cop cars approached me saying that I was flying too close to campus. But I didn't break their "rule" by flooring over the stadium, but that was very excessive for three cop cars just for me to flying the drone taking pix
I'm glad they are having the case
As long as there was not a game in progress
@@markkempton4579 I know the rules and it was not, it was a Friday evening before the season started, perfect sunset though. Got great shots
@@mlwz1082 that's sweet. I'm sure you knew more than they did.
Here at the University of Oregon, they have a TFR that shows up on all of my apps...but ONLY on game days. I can fly over if there is no game, anytime during the year. Does MI have TFRs for game days?
btw, that tfr is three miles out! That means i cannot fly in my neighborhood on gameday even though I am a little over two miles away. MI cops may be thinking that IF there is a TFR for the stadium, it will also include anywhere on campus. So the error here is them thinking it is in effect at all times...not just TFRs.
@@TrumperVex No that's part of what he was talking about, Umich tries to police the sky above their campus attempting to supersede FAA regulations.
Even on game day, they try to say you can't fly one 5 mi within the perimeter for 3 hours before and 3 hours after and which I know it's 3 mi and 1 hour.
So now that the state supreme Court has already set the precedent with the individual case, there's a mad coalition suing the university over this.
Thanks for all the info, Greg. This is very helpful.
U guyz ROCK and are very appreciated!
As a licensed professional pilot who used Pilot Institute, I am very thankful for your continued efforts to educate hobbyists as well as commercial pilots.
Further, your presentation is not just the top of aeronautical sites, but I’d say among the best execution on RUclips PERIOD!
Thanks Greg, great information as always.
Another great update by the PI! Great work peeps!
I work at a University inside E3 airspace, that turns into G space after 7:00 pm local time. I perfectly understand that universities should have the right to monitor what happens inside the campus. I someone flights a drone (and there a good number of users that do without a 107 pilot licenses or TRUST certificates) and end up injuring a person, the university will get sue for it. If you are lucky, you might find the operator. If not, you will end up settling to avoid court. I will not worry about people with 107 pilot license or TRUST certificates. Those usually takes precautions and ask for authorization before flying their aircraft. Being practical, it is probably cheaper to pay a fine now and then, than settling for an injury. So my vote is in favor of the University of Michigan, which I have no affiliation.
Thanks for the interesting parachute info. Let's send Stephaniic an early Christmas gift of a drone. Love the Sasquach metaphor!!❤
A drone with a special payload gift ;)
I do not know about DJI, but I recently bought a Potensic drone, and return it without using it. The terms and conditions of the software stated that the flying information will be send to a database owned by the government of China. You need to register and give your personal information as well. That data will be also owned by the government of china. Well I am citizen for USA, I do not like the Chinese government owning my data. I do not agree with the ban, but I agree in protecting USA citizens from external governments or companies that takes advantage of people accepting terms without reading them. That is why I use linux instead of MacOS or Windows, but that it another subject.
Good show Greg
Thank you Greg! ;-) Happy weekend! T (Also, FYI: From June 27 onwards U.S. only: The “Sync Flight Data” option will disappear from the Settings page as part of the next update of DJI Fly (Mid-July for DJI Pilot 2).
Great Video! great Info! thank you!!
I've been waiting for an Air 4 or an Air 3S to upgrade from my Mini3Pro. But until they figure out this ban trash I'm not buying anything. By the way whatever happens I am remembering the name Stefanik. She won't get another vote if I can do ANYTHING about it. Thanks for the update.
Actually, we do care about new technology on the horizon and other things that affect us as well as the large issues
Taking into consideration that DJI has already established strategic alliances and partnerships, I'm sure they'll remain a strong presence in our drone market. The panic surrounding the ban truly demonstrates there's a monopoly with DJI drones. We need a healthy competitive drone market. It makes absolutely no sense that our first responders and many commercial contractors rely upon one brand, a foreign national entity for the majority of the drones used in the USA. Hopefully this will be the opportunity to steer the market away from a toxic monopoly.
Would teh parachute have any effect on classifications in Europe?
I appreciate the information on these podcasts. I am also a confused recreational drone flier. I am confused as I want to fly my drone but with the inclusion of remote ID and now more and more proposed restrictions to be able to fly I am confused as what to do. I have an FCC registration plus the TRUST certification and I like to use my drone to capture aerial photographs and video of places I hike here in Arizona and the SW. Any recommendations would be beneficial as I have just kept the Air 2 in storage during all of the churn going on regarding drone flying. Thanks
I own DJI drones but i also understand how easily they could be weaponized by the PRC/PLAN.
If law enforcement didn't know about remote-id, wanna bet that the drones they fly aren't compliant. Considering how "important it is for safety", you'd think that police departments would have immediately added remote-id.
So what do we do now that dfr passed?
No data reporting is a good step, but what about geofencing? You still need DJIs permission to unlock in restricted airspace. Seems like they can still capture data ?
So DJI drones aren’t getting banned or is that still undecided
I've watched this channel for years and love your content but I am confused why the ban which seems to be working its way through Congress isn't the top story? It's on many other media platforms and it seems like it would be the most important information for your audience. Anyway appreciate your content and im sure you have your reasons.
That’s what I’m saying.. I’m confused as well
We talked about the ban last week in details. This week, there is no new information other than what we mentioned at the end of the video.
@@PilotInstitute That makes sense. I appreciate the explanation.
Without sync it won’t work with aloft, what am i missing?
I’ve recently purchased a “bluemark” rid mod for my air 3. I want to stay up to date with what the FaA requires of me. I’ve decided a while back my standard reaction to local pd or a karen is kick rocks
Creating a parachute for one single model of drone that happens to be the most expensive model doesn’t make any sense to me.
Thanks!
Where can I purchase the SVSS parachute for my M3E? Is it avaia
It should be on their website.
University of Texas has successfully restricted access over their campus trying to use "copyright" on some buildings an excuse.
UT is a PUBLIC school so this is particularly grating. Hope this decision can help in Texas.
Do you think the new parachute will be compatible with the Mavic 3 classic?
No. It doesn’t have an SDK port like the enterprise drones.
Well if you listen to the press conference regarding the shooting at the splash pad today listen to what the lead investigator says about how useful drones were said the politicians here too
4:00 i feel like the public shouldn’t have that information that makes me uneasy every time I fly
The City of Naples in Florida bans drones over the city UNLESS you pay their ridiculous permit fee!! The fee is multiplied exponentially if you want to fly under part 107!!
Is the First Responders' letter available to read online?
Dronexl
As for Network Remote ID - If I happen to be in a coverage area, sweet. Network away. But if I am flying out of coverage area and have no network service, I sure don't want my drone to tell me "can't take off" because it doesn't have network access. It can fall back to broadcast RID at that point.
Should I even still take my 107th if I can't fly my dji drone?
The parachute looks like a top hat (!!!) I love it
Don't expect much, the DJI ban is buried in this Defense appropriation bill request and no one will take the time to read thru it. DJI could do a Microsoft OS kill update and ground all US DJI Drones with a simple update as a retaliation to the ban. I've seen this technique before in other products to enforce planned obsolescence.
Living near a Airport we have a No fly zone, Saw a Mavic 3 on the beach flying, the guy was new to regs, he went over the water then dropped in the ocean lost all control. Learn the rules ,,
About Remote ID, I downloaded an app (Drone Scanner) that reads the data from remote IDs of drone in the air. Why can enforcers download that app and use it? Now, that is an honest questions, because usually I know the operators of the drone flying, and know exactly with brand of remote id modules they use. Perhaps the app is not accurate with other remote id brands.
If you get any updates on Countering CCP Drone act please just upload a quick video as soon as you can. Doesn't matter if its rough video shot on an phone. We just want the information. We dont need Fancy editing for this news, we need speed. This DJI news warrants their own videos
Don't get me wrong this format is normally good. But it's killing us having to wait for a premier for a video with multiple stories during this time
There is no more updates at the moment.
@@bitsbytes123 you're right, we are in limbo right now. But when information does come out I don't want to wait a couple days for a RUclips premier
Do hot air balloons need to have Remote ID or similar technology? if not why not ?
Hot Air balloon are not remotely piloted. No Remote ID.
So, is DJI banned or not?
It’s on the way but it’s not finalized yet
@@AKsDroneWorld I spoke with my Rep yesterday who is on the same committee as Rep Stefanik. The bill is still in committee.

Greg would of been on top of it, he talking about parachutes and remote id.
I dont think dji is getting banned
This is recorded on Wednesday. But no, the bills in question take a long time to get passed. It wouldn't happen overnight.
@@markkempton4579yup that’s true. Could take weeks or even a couple months.
Big surprise that Remote ID turned out to be completely worthless. They never had the infrastructure to make it useful. Without wifi antennas spread out every few hundred feet over the entire country, Remote ID is a joke. I guess that's why they want network connectivity, but that has it's own massive host of problems. This is a great example of what happens when you have legislators making technology rules when they have no understanding of how said technology actually works. This is like management at your work... too busy to pay attention to details, but still happy to make an uninformed decision about what to do next.
If universities and townships aren't able to restrict the airspace above their jurisdictions, how have the National Parks been able to ban drones from flying over their airspace?
National Parks don't restrict airspace, they restrict operation to/from the land they manage.
Remote ID for Law enforement just looks like another way to be harassed while in the middle of a paid mission.
We screwed our selves honestly by allowing dji to corner the market essentially. They’ve reached a point where it does have serious security problems but everyone is screwed if it happens
This war against dJI is so sad to the potential of this tech and its implications. Congress should be worried about more important things.
Removing whatever mobility we have, they’re on target.
The NDAA should pass today and then that's that for DJI
research how a government bill actually works, is voted on, and signed by the President.
@@markkempton4579 not true the bill says they can revoke previous FCC permissions which would ground all DJI Drones as well as end wireless information from other DJI devices as well.
@@markkempton4579 ok lol, that’s not what you said though. You’re free to do as you wish.

🪂 weeeeeeeee!
Ending Sync is hilarious in that I told the 'prison flyover investigators' that I had not flown past 2k ft away & if they needed... all my flights were uploaded to DJI & my batteries keep count of my flights too.
The batteries only tell the amount of times they’ve been full cycle charged; they do not save flight data. Nor do they say how many times they’ve been flown.
@@AKsDroneWorld If you took my battery cycles & laid them next to my flight-data you'd be able to account for every minute flown. Sure it's not a perfect match but if you're searching for VLOS flights then you'd be able to see it missing if I deleted it b/c of how much juice it would need.
:)
4:13 BS! there are apps you can get for free on the app stores that show RID. so the FAA is NOT the only ones with access. (I have one of the apps to see how bad this is.)

Flight data is worth big $$$I think we need to understand what data is collected and available to all but the operator. With big data AI mining, it could be important. Could Foreign investors use the agricultural flight data to target the best treated cropland? Soon drones will have xTB built in storage of history. Could drone refresh or service download the data.

The Dumb and Dumber meme places Pilot Institute in the same category. PI is being disrespectful and childish when dealing with a serious subject.
You can't be serious.
@LAP1050 I would hardly call it a serious subject. It’s a political ploy and an effort to force money in the drone market towards our country’s companies. The reality is…we don’t innovate. Not only would the ban destroy that part of the security sector which is already in place…no one is talking about film/video professionals. I myself make a living in video production. My drones are a vital tool. There is NOT another manufacturer that is making drones for my industry that have the image quality, capabilities, and the affordability of what DJI offers. If there was a better product…people would use it. I use the RC remote controller with the built in screen and I can fly without a WiFi connection. I opt out of data transmission and DJI is disabling the ability to even store that data in the US. Where is the issue.
