Beautiful clean up of the machine! When you showed the shuttle/needle operation, there was a little smaller than pencil hole in the iron casting just at front and to left (would be covered by slide plate). That hole needs a scrap of flannel soaked in sewing machine oil rolled up and stuffed tightly into it. It originally had an oil wick. Be sure at bottom of hole toward shuttle path that the hole has cleared out small opening to shuttle race. This keeps shuttle wear down and decreases need for new shuttle so soon. Thank you for video.
Thanks for your comment. I will find some felt and put it in place. I am not going to be using this machine that much as I also have a 1950s era 201 singer that works perfectly. This machine belonged to my late mother in law and was very dirty and rusty from sitting in her house unused for many years. I was really just looking to clean it up and see if I could make it work. It will be displayed in our home when the cabinet and treadle is cleaned up and repaired. I think people will like to see the machine in working order when it is finished.
Danger for others if you run at a fast speed without the cover over the shuttle it can pop up and jam the carrier bending it. This may happen more with a 27k and 28k rather than the 127k with a more enclosed carrier compared to a VS3 1891 machine. Shame these machine don't last long my guess is 200y at most and a lot longer if you oil them ;-)) My wife has a modern Brother FS40 and I set her up with a 201k for heavy work in the hope the FS40 lasts longer. my UK Singer 27k R12022xx 1903 called LILLY was in quite good condition in a bent wood case with side table. I often think of using it in high winds to stop my garden fence blowing down ;-)) Best get a new bobbin tire or use some rubber tape then fit the rubber over the tape. leather treadle belts are available, not a problem in the UK, you can use rope or even a strip of cloth twisted into a belt, I have seen quite a few solutions. all the best This will scare you with a motor drive, I have started the link at 1m 15s ruclips.net/video/RXIRbazT2Rs/видео.html I have often thought of a flat belt drive with a battery drill and no modifications to the sewing machine.
I wonder if the machine would actually sew at that speed. My guess it would skip stitches and bind itself up. Might be interesting to see what would happen.
Although this is an old machine it will someday be very old and it will be passed on to our children. My intent was to get it working and keep it for a conversation piece. It works perfectly, but will probably not be used. It will be however, on occasion, be used to demonstrate the fascinating and ingenious mechanism that makes it work. So my intent is to maintain it in working condition and allow the years of use show though the wear and tear that has taken place over the years. I have made progress repairing the table including some veneer repairs, refinishing the wood and paint the very rusty legs that were beyond cleaning up. I still need to repair the six drawers that go in the table and make a short video about that. I will also be demonstrating how nice this machine sews.
