I think you're not understanding that Chara's hit was completely legal, he was playing the man with the puck and went for a check. Just happened to be at the wrong spot at the wrong time. They didn't suspend him because there was nothing malicious done
It was a legal hit by all means. However, the hit was made more severe due to Montreal not having the rounded partitions for their boards. They changed the boards after that incident.
Nick Hughes He doesn’t sit on the DoPS. He’s a board member for the league, but has no influence on the DoPS. If he did, then Marchand would not have had a single suspension in his career.
True Story One time when I was going to Canada trip I was wearing my bruins sweatshirt and the Canadian border guy said that I couldn’t enter Canada unless I put my sweatshirt into my bag. Scared the crap out of me
Well you know, lucic was actually a goal scoring productive hockey player and George laraque was a boxer that new how to skate, really gonna trade a 20 minute player for a 3 minute player? I guess we know why the canadiens lose so much, they don’t understand trade offs
jake king lose so much. 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂. Don’t we have like, double the cups you guys do? And I don’t care if they aren’t recent or anything, cause y’all only won in 2011, not enough to earn bragging rights.
Matteo Giampietro lmao when’s the last time you went to the cup? Stop bragging about wins from when their were 6 teams in the league. Must suck having to know your team is golfing while the bruins are still in the playoffs every year doesn’t it?
@@jacobking962 but by that Logic why would any of the Habs fight any of the Bruins? Lucic isn’t a chicken because he wouldn’t fight the bigger and tougher Laraque but Subban is a chicken for not fighting the bigger and tougher Lucic? If the issue is not wanting to trade Lucic a 2nd line LW who played 16.5 minutes a night for Laraque a 4th line RW who played 7 minutes a night. Why would you trade Subban a top pairing D who played 26 minutes a night for Lucic a guy who plays 10 minutes less at a position of lesser value and also scores nearly the same amount despite playing on offence. I’m not saying Subban aint a chicken, but Lucic isn’t much better in this situation
On the legal side: the same way boxing is. If you agree to enter a game of physical conflict, people are allowed to hit you. On a physical side: While hockey fights look impressive, the fact that you and your opponent are in skates, on ice rob your punches of almost all their power. When you see hockey players holding each others' shoulders while they punch, it is because that is the only way to not send you and your opponent sliding away from each other with every hit. Add in a few unwritten rules, such as not punching someone against the ice, and hockey fights are probably safer than the legal checks in the game. From a larger perspective, remember that this is one of the most bitter enmities in the sport, and you are watching the biggest moments of a decade's worth of playing each other. Things like Chara's hit on Paccioretti are famous specifically because they are rare. Add in that this rivalry includes some of the dirtiest players in the NHL (Marchand) and some of its most frustrating provocateurs (Subban), and you are looking at the most dangerous that it can be. Most games end without injury (barring a few bumps and bruises). The American Centre for Disease Control did a study on (college) athlete injury rates, and hockey was not notably different than any other team field sport. Male hockey players suffered ~9.5 injuries per 1000 exposures, compared to gridiron football (9.2), soccer (8), and basketball (8.5).
Hockey is basically association Football on ice. Just replace flopping Argentines with fighting Russians and Canadians, and racist Italians with racist Bostonians. (I mean, both sports have tons of racists outside of those two places, but you get the point).
90% of the time the game just ends up looking like an awesome and fast version of football/soccer with some contact thrown in. It only gets like this under exceptional circumstances, and I say this as a huge fan of one of the teams featured here (Montreal) lol. This particular time period was...an experience to watch.
This rivalry brought me back into hockey. I was a Habs fan as a kid, but lost touch with hockey growing up. Got back into it by following the local team, the Devils. This rivalry rekindled my passion for the sport and not long after I went back to rooting for my childhood team. Which has been rough lately, but seasons like the past few will only make a successful season that much sweeter.
baserocks206 if you want a team to watch in the meantime there’s a major junior team in Kent I’m a Portland fan but I’m also looking forward to more hockey in the Northwest

Watching these series’ unfold back in 2011 and on was incredible - especially as a Bruins fan. A couple of suggestions Rewinder: Joe Carter's walk off home run in game 6 of the 1993 World Series Collapse: Miami Heat after winning back to back championships
The Heat haven’t really collapsed since those back to back championships? They’ve managed to rebuild their roster into a solid team since then without ever finishing in the division cellar with rebuilding.
As a Celtic fan, the Heat didn’t collapse. Bosh should’ve still been playing last year if not for terrible heart problems and considering Lebron leaving a D. Wade retiring, they did a great job rebuilding quickly. They’ve got a fantastic front office and culture there.
"Collapse: Miami Heat after winning back to back championships" Sort of inevitable when the league is desperate for Lebron to win, and you can't flop through the playoffs.
Loved this, but I feel like it was remiss to mention that Emelin, physically, was unable to fight. What made him so perfectly infuriating was that he could lay out huge hits, but because his entire face was being held together by a few plates, he literally could not fight without risking his entire face collapsing from even a weak hit.
You've clearly never watched soccer. In matches like Boca-River in Argentina or Red Star-Partizan in Serbia, you can get stabbed just by wearing the opposing team's shirt.
There was once a war caused by a soccer game ( the soccer game was the perfect mix in a chain of events to launch another chain of events that started a war. )
Fair, soccer fans are definitely the most fanatical and can be over the top in many parts of the world, I was not actually including war or murder on the part of fans in this beef category where they mainly look at beef between players, coaches or teams but for fan stuff soccer is the undisputed #1 worldwide. Btw spike I played soccer for 15 years and played in uni in case you were wondering
THANK YOU! I'm sick and tired of the Chara hit apologists making the whole "he didn't get punished because he didn't mean it" excuse when people clearly don't mention that him and Max had a clear beef going on. Is Chara a dirty player and did he intend to do THAT much damage? Nah. But did he intend to start something with Max in order to get under his and the rest of the teams skin? YES. Literally using the logic of the apologists would be applied to defending Bertuzzi's punch of Moore because he didn't intend to end his career.
How do even begin to compare the Bertuzzi/Moore incident to what happened between Chara and Pacioretty? The Chara hit turned out bad but was still a hockey play. He knew Pacioretty was gonna get around him and interfered with him. He never meant to hit him squarely into that spot on the ice. Do you know how hard it would be to line a guy up in that exact spot. He never intended to hurt him. The exact opposite is true with Bertuzzi. He sucker punched a guy from behind while the puck was on the other side of the ice. Bertuzzi totally intended on hurting Moore. Intent matters. And you have to be an idiot to try and compare these situations.
Always had much respect for Subban, Boston fans really showed a lack of grace with how they treated him. Hearing what was said to him really made me ashamed of my city and the team. Sports can get as heated, that’s normal but you don’t bring someone’s race into it. That’s something you can’t control.
@@Zack_410can we not generalize I get Boston fans are known for racist remarks but 99% of the fanbase don’t deserve to be roped in with the ones who have actually said things like that
Probably because it's so one-sided as far as success is concerned. Up until then it was mostly Montreal knocking Boston out of the playoffs aside from the b's dominance in the early 70's with Orr and Esposito.
William Sanders Despite the one sidedness,Maurice Richard and Laycoe got into a fight in ‘55 that led to a riot and Richard being suspended for the rest of the season and the playoffs. Also you can’t fully understand the habs-bruins beef without exploring the tensions between francophone québécois and the anglophone US.
William Sanders bro you gotta understand this is bigger than just hockey. I’ve literally been brought up to associate Boston with the enemy, and not just the bruins. It’s to the point that I naturally just hate the Pats and Celtics too. This entire city is fueled by hating the bruins tbh.
Gotta be honest, is there really enough material there for a beef segment? I mean Tavares was their captain for many years, the whole free agency meetups between the teams and Tavares, he ends up going to the Leafs, the emergence of Barzal and a young core, Tavares gets booed and hears some hilarious chants every time he goes back to play the Islanders as a Maple Leaf, he becomes the Leafs' captain and ongoing beef. The end.
TinnieTa21 I find it really stupid he single handedly carried that franchise to its first post season series win in like 20+ years and in return he gets shitty treatment from isles fans
@@ajiboy1919 Honestly, he earned what he got. Islanders fans saw him as their Yzerman but he left them high and dry. He even turned down an extra 2 million per year to leave which rubbed even more salt in the wound
eggy can you blame him the franchise was failing him not his fault. The thing with yzerman is he had support such as shanahan fedorov lidstrom etc Tavares never had that his second best winger was Kyle okposo ffs.( No disrespect to him ) in fact Tavares still managed to carry this franchise past the first round by winning the game all by himself. You can’t blame him they wasted most of the time in his career because the management was incapable of obtaining another star to come to Brooklyn
I was sitting in the third to last row of the garden during Game 7 in 2011. It was my first ever bruins game. Four random people I didn't know hugged me. Everyone was hugging. I''ll never forget it.
Montréal-Québec rivalry in the '80's was crazy for us Québécois. Lot of french québécois in both teams, it divided the nation to a point which the québec government met the owners of both clubs to never more play the traditionnal December 31st game; it was creating too much turmoil in family's throughout the nation!
A Beef history "Blackhawks vs Canucks" Would be amazing, Those post season matchups were worth every penny! Chicago won a cup in 10 while going through them, then the Canuck finally got through Chicago, only to lose to the bruins in 7 for the cup. Also "Caps vs Pens" would be outstanding even though its still strong beef today.
The Bruins-Habs rivalry is one of the greatest in sports history. There’s an intense atmosphere around the arena whenever the two teams matchup and if you’ve never been in the TD Garden or the Bell Centre for a match of theirs, it is an investment that is well worth it 100000% of the time
Man I remember watching that Pacioretty hit from Chara live on TV. that hit being in your video brought back memories of watching it and how my jaw dropped hoping he was okay.

Thanks SB for creating this video segment on probably the most underrated rivalry in all of North American sports. From judging this video and getting info from books and other sources, I think most Boston sports fans never really hated the New York Yankees in MLB as much as many people have historically thought. I am starting to think that Red Sox nation for the most part was being more “jealous” of the Evil Empire championship success more than hating them. However from watching old sports videos during this great global quarantine of 2020, (thanks RUclips)now I believe that the majority of Boston sports fans actually “hates” the Montreal Canadians the most as a divisional/regional rival in the 4 big sports leagues. While this hatred was restarted in the 2010s, I don’t think this rivalry as heated as say a 20 year period between 1970-1990. **Thanks SB nation for posting this. Please do a follow up on this “beef” focusing on the era between 1970-‘90 when these 2 historic clubs won combined 8 Stanley Cups in that generation. **
This is, without a doubt, *the greatest rivalry in hockey* (and probably, with the possible exception of Habs/Leafs, the oldest too). Even when the Habs have been demonstrably worse than the Bruins, they've never had a hard time getting up and playing with the highest of intensity when facing their age-old rivals (which is one reason why Montreal is, more often than not, a bad matchup for Boston, even as they'd be a great matchup for most other teams). As a Habs fan, I've been enjoying this for a long time now...but while I can definitely say that there ARE Bruins who would be gifted statues in prominent places if they played for the Habs (Bergeron for sure, definitely Pastrnak, and _maybe_ even Lucic when he was a Bruin), Marchand is an exception to that. The rat is always taking things WAY too far, what with his licking guys and spearing them in the nuts. The mind boggles, because he's an incredible hockey player...but he just seems to have a screw loose that no amount of league scrutiny or team-mandated counselling (which I am certain he's endured) can fix. So...no, I would not love to see him on my team...in fact, I'd love it if the sum total of his insanity got him barred from the league permanently. Other players flirt with the line, some cross it just a bit, but Marchand doesn't even NOTICE the line as he's running past it at 100 mph. He's dangerous, and he's going to end up permanently hurting someone.
Max Paccioretty was NEVER physical with the Habs for his stature. He’s thrown like 4 solid body checks with them and two or three of those you can barely find
Funny story: I was at my first game at the Bell Center with my cousin to watch an Habs game for the first time and it was against the Bruins. We both wore Habs jersey and we were sooooo proud. But, right in front of us was 2 bruins fans with both of them wearing a Boston jersey. We knew we hated each other but the funny thing is that every time our team scored a goal, we were celebrating like crazy to irritate the other. But, instead of being mad and cursing at each other, it turns out we were all laughing and having fun of our small rivalry of celebration. So, if there’s one thing to remember is even tho you hate a team, there’s one thing we have in commun, it’s that’s we love Hockey.
I want this beef to finish out, A stick flip, the line and goalie battle, Zach K and Matt T. I think a playoff series would really put this beef on the grill

Funny how Lucic calls players chicken when he refused to fight Georges Laraque.
@@Matty6447 As far as bragging rights go, the Bruins have won more in your lifetime.
Asking as a curious (and concerned) Kenyan:
How...is this sport even legal?
Bob Mwangi this is by far the best part of the sport in my opinion. Hockey mixes the violence of boxing with the grace of ballet
Because it's the best damn sport in the world, that's why.

Watching these series’ unfold back in 2011 and on was incredible - especially as a Bruins fan. A couple of suggestions
Rewinder: Joe Carter's walk off home run in game 6 of the 1993 World Series
Collapse: Miami Heat after winning back to back championships
The Heat haven’t really collapsed since those back to back championships?
They’ve managed to rebuild their roster into a solid team since then without ever finishing in the division cellar with rebuilding.
As a Celtic fan, the Heat didn’t collapse. Bosh should’ve still been playing last year if not for terrible heart problems and considering Lebron leaving a D. Wade retiring, they did a great job rebuilding quickly. They’ve got a fantastic front office and culture there.
E93 Sports a rewinder of the Carter walk off home run would be awesome. It is definitely deserving.
"Collapse: Miami Heat after winning back to back championships"
Sort of inevitable when the league is desperate for Lebron to win, and you can't flop through the playoffs.
Yeah, he had (has?) a metal plate in his face that means he can't really fight.
So that's why his go-to move is a hip check!
This channel is so underrated!! Love it guys!
Hockey beef > any other sport beef

Should have been suspended for,the year
Yeah, and that’s why the loving brooms got rid of the very best fighter they EVER in Chara!
Ahaha you'll find many in Vancouver will defend bertuzzi
@@Boyso5407 You're asking someone to not be an idiot yet you just said all of that dumb ass paragraph? Very interesting perspective.
Always had much respect for Subban, Boston fans really showed a lack of grace with how they treated him. Hearing what was said to him really made me ashamed of my city and the team. Sports can get as heated, that’s normal but you don’t bring someone’s race into it. That’s something you can’t control.
That's just how Boston fans are.

Why start this 100 year rivalry in 2010 😂
Probably because it's so one-sided as far as success is concerned.
Exactly! Very disappointing
William Sanders bro you gotta understand this is bigger than just hockey. I’ve literally been brought up to associate Boston with the enemy, and not just the bruins. It’s to the point that I naturally just hate the Pats and Celtics too. This entire city is fueled by hating the bruins tbh.
It's not rivalry history, it's beef history!
Can’t wait till there is inevitably a beef history of Tavares and the Islanders
Gotta be honest, is there really enough material there for a beef segment? I mean Tavares was their captain for many years, the whole free agency meetups between the teams and Tavares, he ends up going to the Leafs, the emergence of Barzal and a young core, Tavares gets booed and hears some hilarious chants every time he goes back to play the Islanders as a Maple Leaf, he becomes the Leafs' captain and ongoing beef. The end.
@@TinnieTa21 I consider it an ongoing beef, it really won't be resolved until Tavares is retired

The thing with yzerman is he had support such as shanahan fedorov lidstrom etc Tavares never had that his second best winger was Kyle okposo ffs.( No disrespect to him ) in fact Tavares still managed to carry this franchise past the first round by winning the game all by himself. **

Please more hockey videos! There is so much history in the sport.
I know it’s being talked about in the last dance doc, but could you do a beef history for Isaiah Thomas and Michael Jordan?
