Oooooo…..I’m a HUGE fan of H&O. They’re a part of my youth growing up and into high school and 20’s. This is a very nice cover. I like Rod Stewart’s, Kate Bush and The Beach Boys just a bit over this on a list. But each song was respectfully done. And, of course, Daryl’s silky Soulful voice is ALWAYS on point. I played this cd so much while stationed in Germany from ‘89-91 and out in Kuwait. Got me through some hellacious times.
Wow, so soulful, love it. Daryl and John are from the Philadelphia area so it is fitting that they do this song. If you listen closely, you can hear the classic Philadelphia sound 2 minutes in and by the 3rd minute it is full on, progressing all the way to the end. Love that they are playing with an orchestra. Check out John Oates book or audiobook 'Change of Seasons: A Memoir'
Kind of a Philly groove to a Motown beat. No mistaking who did the arrangement here! People forget that the Spinners were originally a Motown/Detroit group. Stevie Wonder wrote some early tunes for them. Daryl and John know their stuff. They did it right.
*@P Kranz* ...and STILL "doin it right," incidentally. It was an exquisite delight to discover Booker T Washington was a guest on Live from Daryl's House, & play that episode from RUclips. See for yourself! Its great 😀😄
Respectfully, I have never forgotten that the Detroit Spinners are authentically Motown. I'm a native Texan, but I've cut my teeth on their rhythum & bass ever since I was a 70's child. They, the Supremes, Marvin G., the Commodores & Lionel R. (together or seperately) have me & my generation forever changed for the better. Speaking of Philadelphia, I wouldn't dare leave out the Three Degrees, Dexter Wansel & his group MFSB, Lonnie Liston Smith, or A Taste of Honey. Priceless 'progressives;' all of them. God Bless Them for making this world a better place through their music 🎼 🎶 _May cooler heads & warmer hearts prevail, always_ 💕
*@Janeah Thomas* Well, thanks to your jazzed-up & funkified grandmother, "Thou shalt inherit the funk & be thoroughly funkified... Now go throughout ye Earth spreading ye Good News of Funk, blessing thee in ye name of the Father, the Son, & Jazz" 😀😄

The tempo is a bit too slow. They should have picked up the pace a bit. On the other hand, the orchestration has a very authentic TSOP/Gamble-Huff/Philly sound!
💯% agreed. I'm just another 70's boogie child, & I'm from Texas. But who cares where you're from. Gotta love the Sound of Philadelphia! From Dexter Wansel (mastermind of MFSB), Jimmy Ellis & the Trammps, to Mr Cornelius & his Soul Train, & of course the Three Degrees. Daryl & John faithfully carried TSOP with this rendering of "Philadelphia Freedom" Incidentally Elton John was invited onto Soul Train & performed "Philadelphia Freedom" in 1976. Regardless of color, you know a guy's got soul when he's summoned to Soul Train. But the only other white person I know of that made it onto Soul Train was David Bowie (Performing "Fame," maybe? I don't remember) Anyway, here's Elton John, doing his thing in '76. The orchestra is from recording, of course, but he & his piano are in live accompaniment for this performance: m.ruclips.net/video/9587satTQDg/видео.html
This was always my biggest favorite song by Elton. Between the two versions, I think Elton's was better but they didn't do too bad a job. I enjoyed Hall/Oates' earlier hits up until the mid -80's.
@sanjhunt: I agree, wholeheartedly!!! But it is what it is, at the time! John has his own thing going on! God Bless him. But I was over seas when this came out and I love it today as much as I loved it then!! My Boys FOREVER!
I think the whole album is brilliant, and bearing in mind it is to celebrate the songs of Elton I think all the covers on this album do his songs justice, and show what a great songwriter he is....
This song always had a Philly feel and Daryl is a Philly man. He does it more justice than Elton. He has the rhythm to pull it off better!!!!! Stick that in your pipe and smoke it!!
*@Paul Harris* 100% agreed. I cant claim ownership of Philly since Im a Texan, but I was born & raised in 70s Funk & Motown, & I literally Thank God for my blind luck in inheriting that decade No one is more soulful than Daryl Hall. No one. "Sarah," (1973) & "Rich Girl." (1977) Need I say more 😉! Speaking of gettin funky & jazzy, Paul, you wouldnt have PHIL Harris (Disneys Jungle Book 1967, & Aristocats 1970) in your family would you? 😄😀
The original is the best, by all means show your own city bias for it, and Hall is an excellent artist (Bob Fripp wanted him as singer for King Crimson - THAT talented) but lets reign this idiotic Philly Fantasy back a bit
Daryl singing Elton? This is what heaven is like. I'm sure of it.
Brilliant version. Vocals are awesome and I especially enjoy the percussion on this recording.
Always loved this rendition of my favorite song.
Personally, I think Daryl & John did a faithful and credible interpretation of this song. its the best song on this whole album.

Totalmente de acuerdo 👍🏻
Daryl's vocal choices are brilliant.
I know this is Eltons song, but Daryl is a Philly boy. Sings just as well. So there!
Wow, so soulful, love it. Daryl and John are from the Philadelphia area so it is fitting that they do this song. *@Don Jones* Thank You for that, Don. Ill do just that. Wouldnt've crossed my mind to check up on daryl hall, on amazon 😊🍷
This is why the 80's was like is always have the best music!..
My favorite Hall & Oats tune.
how it varies in chords from the original in the chorus make it definitely smoother
This is a fantastic cover of an Elton classic, well done H & O superb job!!!
I can hear the homesickness in this version of it.
Daryl Hall and John Oates did a really good job on this one and I like their version and I also like Elton John's version also. Thanks
they do a pretty decent job I still have this CD (used to play the ass off of it) Happy 4th everyone..........
I love this Version better.
Ain't nothin better. By guys that know !!!
Classic version!

Hall and Oates were session musicians for Gamble and Huff

I agree with you!
Lovelovelove
H&O: a masterpiece, as usual.
Sweet vocals hall and Oates❤️🔥hot Elton John song🎉😎
Yes, my buddy.
Fantastic !!!
I would love to hear The Hooters cover this song (they're another musical group from Philly).
this is great
No in between with this version...you either love it or hate it.

Me, happy man,
Best the best

It sounds much more "Philly" than the original

I got this cd when it first came out, and in my head, I'm hearing this as being better suited to John Oates' voice.
Quem veio pela Antena 1/Alpha FM?
@sanjhunt: I agree, wholeheartedly!!! But it is what it is, at the time! John has his own thing going on! God Bless him. But I was over seas when this came out and I love it today as much as I loved it then!! My Boys FOREVER!
Hall changed the words of the song fron "never had" to "always had". That ia what m akes this song better than Elton's original version.
I think the whole album is brilliant, and bearing in mind it is to celebrate the songs of Elton I think all the covers on this album do his songs justice, and show what a great songwriter he is....

Escutei na antena 1 e na Alfa 101,7
@karaldnyc What is the problem?? I think it was a great job..x
This song is breaking my heart. How could they is all I have to say!

Paul Harris. You, sir, are KIDDING. Nobody and I mean NOBODY beats the 1970s Elton John. Period.
Elton's is more Pop & this one is more Soul but they're both great versions.
where can i find this live??
this version is better
This version is better than the original...and they're from Philly....
It's not better but it's still really good.
Missing the groove that Elton's had. That Dee Murray bass line makes it. Sounds like elevator music without it.
"Sounds like elevator music"....or something from Michael McDonald.
Odd this - an excellent song written by, produced etc etc by Englishmen, and done here by Philadelphia lads.
@ImSiriusB If you don't have anything nice to say don't say anything at all....
😆
What's wrong with it?
HA HA!!! Hall & Oates makes Elton John and his band sound like James Brown by comparison.
All of the fun is gone. Elton's version is so much more fun and Daryl or John sounds sad and sickly.
Hahaha. No. Dead wrong.
@@lilliandonaldson8121 just listened again. Feel the same way... how dare they!
This is not Elton John. Not even close😳👎
The original is the best, by all means show your own city bias for it, and Hall is an excellent artist (Bob Fripp wanted him as singer for King Crimson - THAT talented) but lets reign this idiotic Philly Fantasy back a bit
Sorry Daryl! Eltons is better! Hard to match what I think is Elton John's best song! Nice try, though!
this version is like putting a moustache on the mona lisa. CRAP !
The vocals are good, but that's it .The song tails off at the end. Definitely belongs on your typical ''Lite Rock'' station..SNORE.....................
What utter crap. This is an excellent version, but the original is always better.
And this IS
