  • Specific gravity test : Method to verify if your precious metal is real
This simple test will show you if your round, bar, bullion or coin is made of the metal it's supposed to. The test takes about 2 minutes to perform and is very precise. Let's learn together serie.
Here is the table of specific gravity values per metal types:
    Copper: 8.79
    50% silver: 9.68
    80% silver: 10.17
    90% silver: 10.31
    Sterling silver (92.5%) : 10.3
    99.99% silver : 10.6
    14K gold: 13.2
    24K (99.99%) gold: 19.3
    Platinum 99.9%: 21.5

How accurate is SG test? I got coins from APMEX that didn't measure up to mint measurements. Using SG the metal tested 10.49.

It depends how you do it. If it was done by professional equipment, it would exact. If you use come day items, allow for a small variance but it should still be pretty accurate.

You can't do an accurate specific gravity test on a 90% silver US coin. In your test the number was way off the mark. That is because the known SG values are for metals that are pure. When alloys are known and their percentage in the coin is known you could determine the expected SG. With the US 90% silver coins the remaining 10% consists of various metals and impurities that varied over the years and from batch to batch at refineries. I don't believe that they were very particular at all about the 10% of the coin that was not silver.
