  • Nitric acid 925 sterling silver testing for Real or Fake jewelry pieces at John Fish Jewelers; jewelry store in Las Vegas, Nevada.
When determining if an item is real, we place it through a variety of tests. The top go to method for many jewelers and pawn shops, is by using nitric acid. By scratching the metal on the black stone, we are then able to pour the solution on top to confirm its authenticity. If the solution disappears, it means it failed and is not a genuine piece of jewelry. However, if it holds the acid for a specific time frame, it has passed that specific test as being a real piece. Further testing will be needed in some cases.
In this video, we are showing how 18 karat acid will yield a fluorescent blue when coming into contact with real sterling silver. Which of the three is real versus fake? Watch to find out!

Or even 40% silver.... It dissolves the copper and leaves silver so technically anything will pass that has about half silver in it

@kenmastersmaster good point but through experience you will notice that something that is say 40% silver will take more pressure to scratch board. High content silver will scratch like using chalk on a chalkboard if that makes sense?
