These Valvenergy pedals are crazy underrated, I own the Silk Drive and it's a valuable asset to my pedal board. Please do pick up the Silk drive and give it a test run!
As much as I didn't think I'd be using the Preamp or Cab sim modes, I've actually found that they've been really useful. Pretty much every time I'm using a backline amp I prefer to use go into the FX return with this pedal and boom, got an AC30 tone.
Absolutely informative...enjoyed enough to subscribe. I like your videography style and production values. I had obtained a Mystic Edge just a day before I saw your demo and commentary. Looking forward to future productions.
sustain in the pedal depends on the level of the compression it applies to the tone. Different types of amps also have different approach to compression. Some prefer less compressed tone (as it is more dynamic), some more (as it more "singing").
popped on to look up some sample knob settings / tips, as I got one of these last week. it's so good I'm going to check out the others. mind. blown. only mild downside is that I have to buy a couple more plugs or upgrade my power supply to give it the 600 mA+ each pedal is rated at. I'd never heard the term line isolator before. thanks for sharing that info, yet another interesting thing to learn about!
Great sounding demo! I just have a note; the Link jack uses a TS cable, per the manual, not TRS as stated above. Using multiple units (more than two) requires a splitter cable. Vox says up to five Valvenergy pedals can be chained in this way, but I'm not sure how that works, exactly. The line is being discontinued, I believe, but if you can source one in the near term, the price has dropped to $99.95, which is absolutely a steal, for this uniquely versatile line of tiny tone machines. I have a Silk Drive, which has a delicious Dumble flavor. Cheers!
Great review, these always intrigued me from day one. Every pedal of this line sounds awesome. I would buy the mystic edge as I’ve always loved the tone of a vox but I’m not a fan of their lower level amps for some reason
Hows it still holding up? I am highly considering getting one. How would you say its clean tones are? Clean vox tone seems to be the hardest to model, but its probably my favorite clean amp tone. I am running through a 13watt Fender Tube Amp, stays very clean for such low watts. (Btw I subscribed. Great stuff!)
So as a Vox AC15 player, how does this work as an OD pedal? I'm always a bit confused about pedals which turn one amp into something else.........and how it would stack up going into what it's trying to emulate?
Nice video. I wondering how this pedal would be for trying to coax clean AC tones out of my Fender Tone Master Twin Reverb. That amp is a clean machine so would be nice if this pedal could make the Fender’s twin speakers sound more like an AC30 by running this pedal out front as a stomp box.
If the Twin had an effects loop, it'd be a lot more effective to use the Valvenergy as a preamp, but heading into the front of the Twin as an overdrive pedal will work too to an extent. I would say to just roll the three-band EQ on your Twin to minimum for each knob.
Wow, amazing playing! I came here for the pedal demo but your playing just blew me away! Did you use a compressor in the first demo (Standard Mode)? Your sound was so even and yet it didn't sound squashed at all. Anyway, thanks for the video. Keep making awesome music!
Thanks Gabriel. Nope - no compression! This pedal is still one of my favorites. I actually bought the Dumble-voiced version of this pedal last week and have been digging it too. It also has a similar sort of natural compression. www.zzounds.com/a--3971116/item--VOXVESD
Does the cab sim adequately model the AC30 power amp? I'm guessing it doesn't matter, though it kind of bothers me when cab sim pedals don't model the power amp.
It does not have power amp simulation, and it DOES matter. I don't have any of these cool little pedals, but I do have a Vox mini super beetle, which you could think of the amp version of these. I've been experimenting with using it as a recording tool, and the built in cab sim is not good enough. However, both the amp and these pedals allow you to bypass the built in cab sim (a very cool feature which I wish other companies would do!). I use the amp as a pre amp into my audio interface, then I load in a power amp simulation + Impulse responses during editing on my computer, and MAN it sounds amazing.
Thanks for weighing in Ryan. No, there is no power amp simulation in these Valvenergy pedals. I've been happy with it though when I need to go direct. It's nice to have the option.

Couldn't agree more! I'd love to try the Silk Drive.
Slick Day Tripper
Thank you Steven!
Nice playing brother!
Normally this type of pedal wouldn’t be for me, but you’ve made it sound very very good.

One crazy thing about these pedals, is the natural sustain they have. I love my Nux MG300, but the sustain the Mystic Edge has is so natural.

I will get this to pair with my Digitech CabDryVR. Thanks.
Excellent pedal. It's analog and has a built-in valve.
Great explanation of tube vs solid state overtones.
Well done video, and for my ears, the pedal shined best as a preamp.
very impressed with the direct out sound
Picked it up today at guitar center. Highly impressed! Has the same chime and clarity as an AC30.
It's amazing isn't it? Just yesterday I bought the Dumble-voiced option they have in this series because I've been using the Mystic Edge so much

Yeah I noticed they were on sale. Thanks for the correction! Since this video, I've also bought a Silk Drive. It's also a favorite pedal of mine.
Really casing vox clean chime. This in the loop of my lonestar classic might do the trick
Thanks for the review, gonna buy one just don't know silk drive or mystic edge

I still really dig this pedal. Last week I bought the Silk Drive which is the Dumble voiced option - www.zzounds.com/a--3971116/item--VOXVESD
Good stuff Alex! Great review, excellent playing!
Thanks! Still really enjoying this pedal FYI. It was a great purchase for what I do.
Cool pedal and awesome playing I might say. Nice to see you're doing something besides the HX Stomp.
Thanks Will! I try to keep up on plenty of different topics
Great tones! Can it sound crystal clear?
Could you do a review about the settings of the vox mystic edge? Using both channels? Bass, High, Cut, Gain and Volume...
A great video. Thank you 😎
Great demo,thanx
Thanks so much Margus!

Tasty playing! Cool pedal. What pickups are in your strat? 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👍🏼

Great playing! Whats the difference between this & the Silk Drive? Hope to hear more of your playing.
Thank you! The Silk Drive is just the Dumble-voiced option while this is the AC-30. All the other features are the same though
Have you used it with the quilter and does it act like a tube stage - also how would you use it with the quilter in front or in the loop?
When I use it with my Quilter, I head out of the Vox using preamp mode into the FX return of the Quilter.

Have you compared this to other vox-style pedals? I have a Carl Martin AC tone but I would really like be able to go direct on occasion
Not back to back specifically, but I have played a few over the years. This beats the solid state emulations for sure.
Does the cab sim adequately model the AC30 power amp? I'm guessing it doesn't matter, though it kind of bothers me when cab sim pedals don't model the power amp.

How would these go used in conjunction with hx stomp?
I would probably use it as a real tube preamp heading into your choice of a cab block. Preamp mode is my favorite with these pedals
How does it take gain pedals in front?
Fantastic. It has the tube warmth you'd expect from an amp. The Silk Drive is always the last drive pedal on my rig.
Very far from Bertignac
