Pete screaming into a Thinline Telecaster to demonstrate a pedal may be one of the funniest moments on the show😂
Pete: calls the oscilloscope oscilloscope
the Captain: "the sine wavy thing"
Pete's withering look when Lee says "no, that's not what it is." 😆
Vox makes a lot of pretty good stuff and they market it all terribly. They have some of the most recognizable branding in music and their corporate design is absolutely all over the map. They should be a the Burberry of musical instruments and instead they're like Woolworth's.
That's so true!
I agree I love my ac15 and ac4 but god their social media is terrible choice of colours is awful they need to spice things up and get with the times
They think cause they put wiggly lines, bright colours and call things stuff like "nutube" and "valvetronix" it's going to sound better 😂
Having said that, they make some good products
@@0megalul309 😐😐😐 great joke you got the whole gang laughing there 😐😐😐
It's almost like they are a quintessentially British brand that has been grafted into a vast, bland, and wholly disinteresting corporation that has its cultural roots in a totally alien culture ..
plot twist: danish pete is actually buckethead😂
I wonder if Pete likes KFC?
@@ivorharden what’s not to love
I see a hefty black Friday deal in these pedals future.
They did this in the past much to that effect, I once used a Vox Bulldog Distortion, it was awful.
Prescient! $99 USD Black Friday sale. 😂
Yep. 😊
Still going today!
Looks like they are disappearing from Sweetwater and GC. Still available from Vox directly for $99. I have the Mystic and I love it! Going to buy one to keep in the box for when these are $300 on Reverb.
I would love to see Andertons do a comparison of a bunch of valve preamps (such as these Vox preamps, Victory, Two Notes Le Clean, etc) running into a couple of different solid state 'pedal form' power amps (like the Electro Harmonix caliber 44) and then into a 1x12 or 2x12 speaker cabinet. The concept of a valve pre + D class power stage (in pedal form) exists with the Milkman Amp, BluGuitar and Orange Terror Stamp - but can you get a good sound mixing different preamps with a power amp that can all be mounted to the pedalboard?
I know y'all didn't vibe with it, but as a guy who really digs his active pickups, I appreciated you pulling out the EMG-loaded LTD for a second. Gave me a better idea of what it might sound like with my rig.
So thanks! :D
Pete is seriously becoming one of my favorite guitar players.
I like how Lee always talks about the "clever people at Vox". Each time !
Have both cutting edge and mystic edge. Impressive , I use them direct onto my audio interface with IR plugin.
It’s killer. Better than any amp plugin, they have the same sound as my valve amps.
When I first heard Shot in the Dark, I immediately thought to myself "Is that... The Captain's lick?" 🤣
Same!!!
I sold my strymon iridium and bought the silk drive and the copperhead instead, the Vox valvenergy sounded warmer fuller and juicier than the Strymon Iridium which as brilliant as is it always sounded sterile iand cold to my ears!
That hanging power supply...., lol, cheers from Chile my dudes, nice tele Mr Pete!
I love some Andertons in the morning!!
Same lol. Probably not morning where they are though.
Unless Lee is on the piss before lunch.
I love you both in this. Pete cracks me up and he's so chilled out too.
Picked up the Silk Drive for a steal second hand, and I'm using it as an in between "hybrid" solution for running my analog drive pedals direct to interface and into amp plugins.
I must say, I'm rather impressed. So much in fact that much like Pokemon?
I gotta catch 'em all!
Ha!
Cheers guys!
I actually like the idea! They sound great as pedals! And if you wanna go direct.. connect them to switch simultaneously and turn on the cab sim... you can use your main pedalboard to go direct!! 👏
Agreed, this video actually sold me on the idea that I could gig at venues that do not have physical amps with the cab sim mode, and when there is an amp, we have another OD pedal on the board. I like it a lot
I'm only 7 mins into this and I already love it because it's one of those episodes where the Captain "might have had a drink-y or two"
LOVE the editing you guys do!!! Makes me feel warm and fuzzy while laughing on the inside!!
The timbres are really cool, the sounds are well incorporated and robust.
Pete’s rocking in that yellow tele🤟🏽🤟🏽
Pete's analogies are spot on!
I really like the design of the pedals and they sound pretty good too.
This is the end of chasing that bucket tone. :D I am laughing my sides off here. :D
Keep up the good work, and stay safe guys! Thank you for the awesome videos! 🤘
I see that Pete's been practicing his chugs 🤘🏾
Finally using anything but a Gibson or Fender. Thank you for not completely ignoring half of your subscribers! 😀
At most I’m giving these - two out of five buckets on the international bucket rating system. 🪣🪣
Can't go wrong with Pete - Love it!
Damn Pete! Ola taught you well! ...you have been practicing your chugs! Well done! 🤘🏼😎🎸
Finally the video I've been waiting for so long!
The Mystic Edge is a great pedal. I love the high end chime of an AC30, even if the amp doesn't have a few features I need.
It's a great clean boost with the gain set to 0, and with the bright switch on as well, it adds the high end chime to my MT15 without sounding overly distorted.
The oscilicope screen is like "Go Faster" stripes on a car. It does nothing but still cool as hell.... and dorky as hell too. It can be two things :)
Ackshually, go faster stripes in racecars were there for the driver to have a visual cue to align the car to the road
There is a Prius near me with dual stripes driven by a methhead woman.
Nice, you added a db meter to the room.
Actually it's set to count Pete's innuendo tally. :)
Allan Gildea lol
Ola's influence again
If you keep chugging on the Cutting Edge pedal, it will summon Ola Englund.
NuTubes can be great. Those pedals sound great, those little AV50 heads they did sounded great…it’ll just take more time. Once they make a “NuAC30” or something, that’ll turn some heads. Make it sounds good, like an AC30, and it’ll be accepted more widely.
The nutube thing is actually from a Japanese company that expected people to use them in more hi fi stuff. Brad the guitologist did a vidio on it
Blueglow Electronics has a vid on a NuTube stereo hi-fi preamp kit. ruclips.net/video/YYm5LM3qOzk/видео.html. Some DIY pedal sites sell NuTube stompbox kits. NuTube is a Korg product. Korg also owns the Vox name.
Brad went "wacko". 😂😂😂
I tell ya, you guys are buckets 🪣 of fun!
😂🙌🏻
Awesome demo! And I really liked Pete's new tele.
sounds great. nice review. love the oscilloscope - please keep it! ✨
That is a really good sound jeez
Pete playing the theme song to a popular children's program in the middle of his chugging riff had me in stitches. Thank you for the good laugh, Pete.
I have the vox stomp lab and it’s epic dude!
But these caught my eye big time!!
personally I really like the oscilloscope, it's so cool
The clean harmonic content on my Mystic Edge is superb - best AC30 for my $$$.
Toight like a toiger!!!
You guys are on fire today
The parting comment was that either these will really take off or be the next Black Friday sale. Now exactly two years later (November 30, 2022), just after Black Friday & Cyber Monday, these are on sale at the Vox website for $99 USD, cheaper than used listings on Reverb.
Pure excellence once again!
gotta love that bucket tone!
Love Vox stuff and am scratching my head as to why I have never bought a Vox amp or pedal over the years...
Very very nearly bought an AC4 some years back, but found was a bit brassic that month when had the chance of what was a really good deal for one with the 12” speaker 🔈
If it's a real oscilloscope and it graphically shows the amount of signal being clipped and where its being clipped then I think it's pretty cool.
I was wondering about that- the amplitude looks different in each pedal with the same signal going in
it is, i have one
Awesome pedals!
Now that the Captain's lick is in an AC/DC song, every Anderton's video ever made is about to get hit with a DMCA/Copyright violation!
Or would Lee have grounds to catch AC/DC for copyright?
Guys, great video. I wish you had demonstrated the clean chimey sound on the mystic. I want the clean chimey vix sound, without and dirt. I may have to get this pedal. It beats lugging a Vox amp around at 100 pounds.
Great craic lads, thanks!
Here the Captain, expertly showing how guitar players like to read up on the theory with the oscil.... Ossy... The wavy kind of thing... He nailed it 👌
Anyone compared the Silk Drive and Mystic Edge to the UAFX Dream 65 and Ruby?
After watching this review I've decided to go buy a bucket!
I just got a Vox Cutting Edge - and (with a humbucker) I think it's the best sounding high gain pedal I've ever owned. I'm definitely considering getting one of the lower gain pedals too, even though I already have several other low gain pedals.
I actually picked up a mystic edge too. It's very good.
Cracking Pedals- sound very good= I love that Telecaster Thin line :)
I think they all sounded great! It would have been cool to hear them into a DSP modeling amp or a Humboldt simplifier and even the bigSky cab simulator just to see how they sounded using these. But as a boutique pedal user I’d use these as just for the drives.
Killer tones!!!
Rad To The Mad Max, Bucket-Boys! Thanks for the upload!
‘It means Peavey’ hahaha Roflmao 🤣 The bucket analogy, the editing. It’s so good.
Good Points On All The Video, I’m With You On This. Now Your Comedy was Rockin 👍👍🎶🎶🎸
New Vox Valvenergy i like; Very very Nice!! I have Two Pedals Silk Drive and Copperhead and i buy netx Time Mystic Edge, and later i buy Cutting Edge
These sound great with a good pair of headphones
I have a mystic edge, it's excellent
I think pete has a new favorite tele!
I use a Blackstar HT Dual pedal emulated output for recording, it sounds great, and it’s valve
I’m really surprised that you were so impressed with the DSM Humbolt Simplifier (which is good, I admit) but not these! I’m really impressed with these in cab sim, which is what I’m after... perhaps listening to the playback you liked them more.
Ill wait till the black Friday sale, thanks
The shout lol, class move
That cab sim is really decent!
They make a tube screamer with the same nutube circuit, also priced around the same as a vox vxt.
The ola lessons paid of!!!
Anyone know how these compare tonally to the previous Vox tube pedals (Cooltron line, Tone Garage line)? I've had most of the OD pedals in those lines and really like them. Very dynamic and very quiet and definitely inspiring. The Tone Garage Straight 6 and Cooltron Over the Top Boost were my favs.
One of the nice things about the Tone Garage series that appears to be part of this line, too, is that they don't chop off the end frequencies - very wide range, yet controllable. I wonder if the low-end freqs is what was causing things to sound like a bucket.
BUCKET!!
I see this as a non-powered evolution of the MV50 line. I'd love to see a demo where you ran a normal pedalboard (fuzz/comp/drives/delay/reverb, etc) into one of these to see if they hold up as a direct amp solution.
Nutubes are vacuum flourescent displays. You probably have watched them a bunch they were quite common on VCRs back in the day. They have gates and grids like transistors but hold them in a vacuum like a tube. Its a gimmick, its not analog and so microphonic, it must be seriously isolated from any jarring or touching, its got no a space for isolation between the components, But it is really quite a novel way to take peoples money, using an old screen from a VCR, i give them props.
And a power tube? No, never.
@@mpirron1 How can it be a gimmick if it works for hundreds if not thousands of ppl? They've obviously figured out how to use them successfully in pedal form to simulate a valve amp sound- and it's very close. No one cares if it's analogue, digital, or some combination of the two- we care about what it sounds like, how it performs- and you can't deny they sound good.
@@stoneysdead689 No, they don't, they sound like shit. They distort unpleasantly, and are hella microphonic.. So microphonic that every manufacturer that tries to use one in a circuit as a gimmick for show has to practically build a hermetic isolation chamber for them. No munufacturer is using them alone to do anything, They are surrounded by solid state devices like LEDS and transistors doing.the real work. Nutubes are all show and no go. And I never said they weren't tubes, I said they were. They are valves, They have the components of a valve and they act in the same manner as a tube. They just are not very good ones for audio. You know why? Because they're supposed to do it for light! I don't think you know enough about electronics theory to offer a credible argunent here. Of course, that's just my opinion. Its also my opinion you should STFU.
And furthermore, you know how you know that crap. Because nobody's using them. If they were good, everybody be jumping on the bandwagon like they always do, Three manufacturers that's all who's using them. Even the developers of it abandoned the tech.
That bucket thing is the hardest I’ve laughed at an andertons video in years
I would have thought the point of amp modelling pedals is that you don't need to lug a great big amp to the gig. You use the pedal and go through the house pa via a di box. Seems a bit silly using the pedal and then going through another amp. That's what I do anyway and it works for me.
Use my silk drive as a pedal platform straight to pa sounds REALLY good!
Excellent stuff Lee & Pete. Back in the 60s I used a Burns Trisonic in my band, are Burns still trading ? Please excuse me as I'm in my 70s now. Thanks
I recently got a BMG (Brian May) Red Special with those inline-wired Burns Trisonic pickups (or at least reproductions of) and with the 3 pickup/phasing switch options it's a kick in the pants. Guitar Center just started offering these a couple days ago on pre-order, I got mine from over the pond. For less than $1K you can open up a whole new world. I use a Vox AC10 or 30 through a Bearfoot Emerald Green prototype and KAT Treble Booster (another BMG product) and it turns heads. It will take you back in time... Cheers
I had a "loose bottom" with the "hoooing into a bucket" from some bad meatballs once.
All very nice guys, but how about a review of the Cambridge 50. Pretty please!
I have Korg Monologue synthesizer with similar oled ossiloscope it's very useful in that context because i can hold a note steady and see the waveform clearly but a guitar can't do that.
Pete definitely took the LTD home and started writing his new melodic death metal EP
I kinda liked the tones from the Cab Sim the best. Seemed to be easier on my ears.
I think it would be cool to see a blindfold Tube OD Pedal vs Tube Amp video.
Btw good luck trying running it from the battery. Drive pedal circuit normally draws less than the on LED on the pedal. This with nutube and display will work like what 20 minutes on the battery?
Pete was the Dutch bucket shouting champion 3 years in a row !
@@bergiep So he can't enter a Dutch contest? and it's a joke so let's not be so literal.
Imagine sharing a house with these blokes. lol. ty 4 review. Some more lead tone demo's would've rounded it off nicely. ty
Thank You! Ive been wondering how the link thing works! Im a newb so I didn’t know what was meant by “when linked its like the channels on an amp” 🤘👽👽👽
Korg came up with it!
I may be 'the one', but I kind of like the oscilloscope.
5:08 The viking is come forward from Pete! :D
Pete REALLY improve his chugs
Makes me want to create a pedal with an electromagnetic field that adds to the sound through the pickups.
Zvex does that.
Throw a piezo element into an existing pedal and wire it into the signal path.
Bucket Tone.....Hoo! 🤘👽
Might be seen as an unpopular opinion, but I think these are great and exactly what musicians like me need. Sometimes venues don't have an amp, and something like this on a pedalboard is a very desirable solution. And when there is an amp, you have one more OD pedal to play with. Also contrary to many in the comments section, I like their design. Many don't notice, but the brushed top has the similar X cross design on the grille of the Vox amp archetype. That aluminium top is classy and it's beautiful. The oscilloscope might not be super functional, but it's pretty cool. Id love to see how the oscilloscope reacts to different dynamics and different drives that I put into it. It doesn't need an effects loop because there is no power amp and you could simply put the time based effects after it before going direct, nearly the same as having an effects loop. If Vox reads this, I really commend them for doing this and I sincerely hope more stuff like these are made.
There is a moment there at 10:54 where ironically the Copperhead nails that modern American glassy clean tone.
If these pedals had headphone output & stereo aux in, they could genuinely be quite useful in the studio.
The only thing i wanted to see was how they go into a power section as a preamp. Missed that one guys.
It's not very good. I was very disappointed as that was one of the intended uses for it (I bought a Silk Drive). It sounded just plain awful in pre-amp and cab-sim modes into my Behringer mixer or Peavy power amp. But as a normal guitar pedal, phenomenal.
@@danieldurfee4901 Awwww well thaaaats some shit. I was really looking forward to that feature. Looks like Kingsley is the answer for me.
@@danieldurfee4901 Not sure why you felt that way, I too bought the Silk Drive as a substitute for an amp for recording purposes, and I found it surprisingly pleasant and very useful in the cab sim mode. Different preference perhaps? I like it, that's my verdict
@@aaronchong9856 I may have an idea. I left everything on my pedal board when I tested it into my mixer. I have a reverb and EQ pedal after the Silk Drive, but both are true bypass so I wouldn't think that would make a difference as long as both are off. I will try again later going straight from the Silk Drive to the mixer and skip the extra connections and see if it sounds better.
