    I keep returning to this work because it is so stunningly perfect. I was an amateur pianist...and “quite” good but this piece defeated me. Let me tell you a true story which please accept as it doesn’t do anymore than reflect on Jimmy.
    Many years ago, I met the “hotel pianist” at the Martinez Hotel in Cannes. It is a 4* Palace Hotel. Jimmy was an African American but also probably the only black concert pianist in history! He was also blessed with a wonderful singing voice. Over several years, I got to know him better and often (!) flew over to New York to attend his concerts at Carnegie Hall. One of Jimmy’s signatures was to meet visitors to the Amiral Bar at the Martinez by playing their “admission” tunes...mine was this work by Chopin! Jimmy knew that I loved it. Can you imagine any pianist being able to play this on “demand”? Jimmy has died, now, but I count him as a deep, good friend and a wonderful pianist.
    As a closing reflection....If you were to telephone The Steinway Piano Company (you do, don’t you:)) if you were put on “hold” then the piano player you heard was Jimmy.

    Fred was a hero of my young childhood, followed without order of preference by Liszt, Paganini, Gobi, Beethoven, Tchaikovsky, Wagner, Sullivan, and other masters that lifted my eyes from the mud of WWII England and took me to the stars and beyond. Then, I found George Formby and enjoyed him too.

    I recently heard Hans Boepple perform this in concert at a much slower tempo, and I personally am used to playing it a bit slower, but actually I agree with Mr. Giles. I thought this tempo was really refreshing. It takes quite a master to pull it off without it sounding frantic, but Pollini does a fantastic job. I'd like a bigger forte right before the recap., but I really like his idiosyncratic final chords, and how he brought out the secondary melodies throughout (e.g. 0:42 and 1:42).

    So far the hardest song I have studied. At first, it is a bit boring to study it, since you have to make repetitive movements in a slow speed and can't quite identify the melody. Also, you have to pay close attention to the wrist positions, which, for me, makes it even harder to study. But when you finally get to a speed in which you can hear the higher notes, all the effort pays off. It is a breathless, beautiful music.

  • @stevengiles3927
    @stevengiles3927 11 лет назад +3

    I think you'll find this is the correct speed. There is a clear tempo marking of crotchet = 104 which is pretty much what this is at. I think you'll find the arrangement you were listening to was "too damned slow."

I thought it was going to be easy until you get to the middle xD. And the emotion you have to show in these piece is very challenging. As where ocean just needs practice. A LOT of practice. The emotions are already in the notes, so its easy to bring them out. So imo ocean is easier. Then black keys, then aeolian, then tristesse. I actually think its the hardest of them all xD

      True. The hardest piece I'm capable of playing is Liebestraume Nr. 3 by Franz Liszt, so this is still pretty difficult for me. Aeolian Harp is really fun though, and I'm still trying to learn it.

      Thank you! I've been practicing Black Keys and Butterfly, too, and all three take a lot of practice and muscle memory.

    So weird that this piece is so pretty when actual aeolian harps are so creepy

    Nope. I see 7 dislikes.
    I know people were talking about how wonderful it will be if they can resurrect Chopin somehow...I have serious doubts for that. According to what I know about Chopin, he will probably get very angry at what the world is coming to. :P
