Don't be confuse the Somalis immigrated from Somalia and Somalis in North Kenya. You could see both in Nairobi. History and background are helpful not to claim anything but reduce confusion visitors who aren't familiar the areas they visited.
Somalis in North Kenya were there before Kenya even got independent and it used to called Norther Frontier. They are politically Kenyan Somalis but this is their land same way the Masia and Kukuyo.
It's similar to the Somali region in Ethiopia. Since Somalia got independent a few years before Kenya, the British held on to the region and added it to the rest of Kenya.
Your guide stated that Somalis were refugees but what she failed to mention is that Somalis make up a big portion of Kenyan population as they hail from NFD or northeastern kenya and are citizens there. They hold an important offices in Kenya too .
NFD stands for the northern frontier district... stolen by the British to give it to Kenya

Somalis are not all refugees.. Somalis are one of the tribes of Kenya. The British gave parts of Somalis to the Kenyans and some to the ETHiOPIans
