I wish I could give you a thousand thumbs up. I realize this isn't a complex job but watching you really helped me. I've done one other DIY job on my old Honda Accord and it was a success. I ended up buying 5 Delphi ignition coils and 5 Volvo spark plugs. It took me awhile, just because I didn't was to screw anything up, but I finally got it. I had a hard time breaking the old spark plugs out but was finally able to get them. I don't know if it was you or another video that mentioned 140,000 miles this should be done. My car started doing the "slow down or shift up" error and Google lead me in the right direction. My car started having problems right at 142,000 miles. Appreciate the help!
I just put new plugs & coils and also cleaned the MAF on my 2004 S60R with 160,000kms...what a difference!! It's injected new life into the car & restored lost power. Well worth doing. Btw for the S60R the manual says torque the plugs to 28nm.
One important tune-up is also cleaning the MAF sensor, on top of the air filter box (just need to remove the box cover and spray the sensor from underneath).
Experts say to use only the CRC Maf sensor spray.. it's 10$ a can. It should be sprayed in the direction of the air flow, from inside the box cover, that's where it gets covered with dirt even with a clean air filter. Mine had a black crust, at 100K miles.
Thank you so much for describing! The only thing is how would I know that the spark plugs and ignition coils' have bad condition and are needed to replace?
Watched this video twice & was able to knock it out in about an hour… for some god awful reason - on the 06 model, they decided to put that hard coolant hose smack dab right over the 3rd coil. Didn’t want to disassemble a coolant hose just to get to the valve cover
happened to me one, 04 s60 T5 , the coil packs were CRACKED , so the currant voltage was not going to the spark plugs, instead it was lost halfway down the cylindre
Just gotta be extremely careful, sometimes the hot-wire element itself inside a MAF sensor is very delicate and can break very easily. I say this from a first hand experience a while ago :( .
HI i have a s40 2006 and I try to replace the Old spark plugs for a Auto lite spark plugs and the car start Shaking Badly them after i put the old spark plugs back again and still the same problem I scan the car and show it me P0300 multiple misfire any Help please i will appreciate
PO300 can be caused by many many things,, the most common is a vacuum leak. I would start by making sure that you have no vacuum leaks. PO300 is not usually a spark plug or ignition coil issue, because if that were the case, only a single cylinder would be affected.
Get a spark plug socket, I would never drop a plug down in there. Nobody bothers to take the extra step to blow out any debris either. This is your engine people, keep it clean.
The original ignition coils last forever on this car, don't replace them just for maintenance. When one goes bad it usually causes hesitation under hard acceleration. Don't replace them all like many mechanics think it's right, just the bad one. As for the spark plugs by all means replace with the exact Volvo type - usually ones with 3 electrodes.

I'm using my wife's phone. My name is James and I need help. I've looked everywhere that I was told to look on my 2001 Volvo S60 for the P.E.M Module and have not been able to locate it. The last Tech I talked with said to check around the distributor cap area can you give me the exact location it would be if it is located under the hood in the motor compartment area. Please need help
Just to let you all know if you have a 2.5T awd or fwd, T5, or R model you MUST take off the down pipe that goes across the top if the right side engine cover.
Why don't you put the spark plug back into the spark plug socket (tool) rather than dropping them into the well? You still have to get the tool onto the spark plug..
+champ7410 This is a great question. There are two answers. First, the business end of the spark plug is delicate. If it hits anything on the way in, the spark gap could be altered. Fingers have better fine-feel than a steel wrench for aiming the spark plug into the hole. The second answer is that all screw threads are delicate. With a blunt tool like a socket wrench, it could be difficult to feel if the threads have engaged correctly at the start or if they have been cross-threaded.
Great video! My question is how often do we need to replace those ignition coils? I replaced the spark plugs but I now need to replace the ignition coil. My car is volvo s40 2005.
Replacing the ignition coil is not necessary unless they have failed. The Ignition coils have a plug boot. The boot kit is usually also done with a spark plug replacement.
Terrible and terrible comments. Everyone here should pay someone to fix their car. Basically unless you have unlimited finances don’t own a Volvo. Because unless you are savvy and want to fix the car once a week you might as well be making payments on a new car. These cars are great but over 120000 it just never ends and I can’t get enough of it.
Hmm. Die Zündkerzen sollten eigentlich mit einem Drehmoment von 28 - 30 Nm angezogen werden. Und keiner in den Videos überprüft den Elektrodenabstand. Warum nicht?

11:57 that look !!!! thank you for the useful video ..
Good tip! A Dirty MAF sensor can cause all sorts of driveability problems.
nice job on the coils and plugs on the S60 Volvo .
so i have a volvo xc90 with a l5 turbo it looks just like that lol i had no idera the plugs were that easy to do thanks for makin this video
What is that thing between the coils and time belt called again?it has that metal cylinder with the yellow and black wire coming out the back
Thank you so much for describing! The only thing is how would I know that the spark plugs and ignition coils' have bad condition and are needed to replace?
I noticed you did not check the spark plug gap on the plugs. Do you have confidence that they are preset correctly?
I have a 2002 S60 t5 and have P0300 P0303 P0305, any of these tuneups be able to fixe these misfires?
Thanks for share you experience.

very good video , but can you list the items you need in order to do the tune up please
happened to me one, 04 s60 T5 , the coil packs were CRACKED , so the currant voltage was not going to the spark plugs, instead it was lost halfway down the cylindre
Do you have to change the coils as well?

volvo s60 how to code ? module does not switch off and could help me , thank you from mexico
I use compressed air to clean up everything before I remove any sparkplug.

Excellent Instructor. Thank you.
If you use Volvo OEM plugs there is no need to use never seize on the threads because the threads are plated.

Maybe remove the cover and check the timing belt.
James Oliphant sometimes that means check the coils.

How about on 2012 XC60 T6 R-design please

Como reparal el motor q sube i baja cuando esta ensendido

You can do it if you loosen the pipe.
Just loosen the turbo pipe and you'll be fine

What kind of new plugs did you use?
+Christian Duarte Bosch is the OEM spark plug. NGK was the customers preference.
We did! Thanks! :)
Dropping sparkplugs could close the ignition gap = bad idea.
Yeah, that's right...
thank you
