It's a true shame that Peugeot has killed this fantastic suspension. Reason they say, it is outdated and not useful anymore. So according to Peugeot steel spring is better than hydractive?!
No i mean Peugeot, since they own the brand Citroen. What Peugeot want, is products as simple as possible and the Hydractive system is not something they like. The new innovative thing is a new kind of damper build in a new way. But it dos not have the auto leveling, like shown in this fine video. Ever since Peugeot took over Citroen back in 1974, it has been going back with real innovative inventions from Citroen.
Not really, they didn't kill citroen back in the days, they did only recently. But, they did kill a part of what citroen could have made, the citroen activa 2 could have been produced ( search for the citroen activa concept, it's FUCKING amazing, like seriously, it was very very very innovative, it had everything that we have today, it's very impressive ), they didn't want to sell it because they were scared that people wouldn't buy it. But, they've re-used a part of its technology in the xantia activa.
SoulTrain yes small trhird button with yellow light when you turn sport mode on. Car has also 2 more spheres. One in front second is back. Its c5 2,2hdi 2001 model.

Thanks for the nice video. I drive a 2008 C5 tourer Exclusive, so I already new all that, but It's always nice to ser a C5 performing! By the way, I had problems with the pump and had to be replaced, which cost me 1000€! But I don't think that there is no better suspensivon, ever!
Luís Fernandes I agree with you. It's the most comfortable car I've ever been in and recently I found out that the car is very stable as I was "racing" a friend with a Mercedes C250 on a road with big bends. Of course his engine was a lot more powerfull than mine, but in the bends, I was faster :D

nice video SoulTrain and welcome to the "world of Citroen and hydraulic"... beware, it's addictive! after that, it is hard to have something else ;)... well... unless you are "nurburgring racer" :))and you shouldn't worry about suspension... Hydractive III+ should be (if I remember correctly) service-free for 200.000 km. that is, if you won't or, if the car was already not misused by previous owner, there should't be any problems. for instance... my father (and after him I) had GS, bought in far les "reliable" times (1976), with far more primitive hydraulic system... and it still had same spheres and hydraulic system (except for the oil of course) in 1998, with over 350K km on the "clock"! all that was necessary for this was never to move the car until hydraulic was raised into "normal/drive" position (like 15-20sec wait after the engine start).... and this was before ant-sink system your car have ;).just remember, C5 is not "nurburgring champion" (though it drives trough corners pretty well)... it is ultimately comfortable vehicle for leisurely enjoyment while traveling! "treat" it this way and it will serve you thankfully... ;)

That is not true. To work on the suspension you must decompress the whole sistem using the diagnostic tool and it lowers the car much more than the lowest position. I've seen this, believe me.
Don't forget that you use the suspension to change tyres without a jack on all hydropneumatic Citroens from 1955. And if you have a high speed puncture you maintain stability and braking. Most of them can be driven on 3 wheels on full height suspension at low speed.
I used it for 5 years, I don't own it anymore, but during that time, I had only a few problems. The fuel pressure regulator, and the clutch. The suspension at some point got a little confused and was not sitting at the correct height, which led to other problems like not being able to fully raise the car, but after 15 minutes of tweaking with a 10mm wrench, it was working linke new.
I like the unique Citroën hydraulic suspension, I am glad it exists. But I am scared it would have problems, I don't have much money to lose on repairs or maintenance so I would most likely buy Japanese or Korean. I like Timing chain engine, Japanese torque converter automatic transmission, single mass flywheel, coil suspension and preferably with no complicated stuff like DPF (FAP or Urea Fluid based system), GDi, hybrid system etc. Or the horrible dual mass flywheel. Unfortunately it will become difficult to find used cars without this stuff in the near future.
@@soultrain8135You are mistaken, it needs to be changed approximately every 5-8 years. Total lds is usually poured, but in someone they pour whatever is suitable in terms of viscosity. For example, I will soon change to mineral hydraulic oil The viscosity should be between ISO 15 and 22.
Very nice , it was just expensive that´s why it was canceled . I have Mercedes SL that does it same , when driving it is in low position and get´s lower the faster you go , when I stop to get out it goes up , Then I can go to high if there is an obstruction . Thank you , you have a nice voice ..
I am the owner of a citroen c5 2011 exclusive and i asked the seller the same question. For what purpose is the lowest suspension? He responded that it is for when you will not use the car for a long time,like this you will protect them and they will last longer. Don't know if it is really true.
I honestly don't see any use for it either. I was told that you can use it if you want to load the car with luggage easier. I don't use it. Also, I don't this it is recommended to leave it on the lower position because all the joints and bushings will be under tension. Just my humble opinion ;-)
The reason I’ve been told when my parents bought theirs (2001 and 2010 models) was to make it easier to tow a large trailer. Instead of fiddling with the height of the trailer or caravan in my parents’ case, you could just lower the suspension and drive under the trailer hook and then raise the suspension (have been really useful on numerous occasions). I believe that is also the reason there are switches for raising or lowering the suspension in trunk of the car.

From what I've heard, it isn't impossible to replace parts by yourself, but you need to lower the car to the maximum level by using a diagnostics tool in order to release the tension in all the suspension parts.
Hi. Nice video! How should I know that particular C5 is fitted with hydractive III suspension? I know that Citroen made these models (facelift, 2008-2010?) with hydractive and with spring suspension. Some sellers mention that in their adds but most not. And I want to buy one with this suspension. Are these cars more expensive than with spring suspension? Thanks!
Hey. Thanks. Yes, the cars with hydractive suspension are more expensive, but now much more. If you are next to the car, the easiest way to make the difference between these two, is to look above the wheel and if you see a spring, it is obvious. Another thing, you could look for the controls of the suspension which are located in the rear of the gear shift lever. There should be 3 buttons on the manual one: two arrows and one sport button. These buttons are present on the automatic gear box one too. If there are no such buttons, then the car has the normal suspension.

Te salut. Da, o mai am, dar tocmai am pus-o la vânzare. Probleme majore nu am avut cu ea. Cea mai mare a fost că a trebuit sa schimb ambreiajul la 135000km, dar posibil sa fie vina celor de la reprezentanta (poveste lungă). Una peste alta, e cea mai silențioasă și mai confortabila mașina pe care am condus-o.

Yes, no matter if you get in or out, it waits for all the doors to be closed (including the boot) and then levels the car automatically to the drive position.
How to change a tire: 1. Loosen the bolts of the tire you need to change. 2. Raise the car to max position 3. Place something like a jack under one of the jacking points, where is punctured tire is... (even a chunk of wood high enough will do) 4. Lower the car onto the jack. 5. Undo the bolts completely, and the rest is like changing the tire on any other car. Except you have a built in jack, in the form of the Hydropneumatic system. So, keeping it in high position won´t work. The suspension will always try to "keep all 4 wheels on the road", so it would press down the flat tire. But when the car lowers, physics will do the job to lift the one wheel off the ground. BUT: If you DON´T put on a new wheel and raise the car back up again, there is a good chance the suspension will level out the car and you can drive on three wheels. Not on highway speed, but it works. Nice anecdote: In August 1962 this suspension saved the life of french then-president Charles de Gaulle from an assassination attempt. Even though the wheels of his Citroen DS were punctured by bullets, the suspension kept the car level and in drivable condition so he could flee from the assassins.
As far as I remember (I don't have the car anymore), it is normal to say stop while the car is not moving and has the ignition on, but the engine is not started. If it says stop while driving, then there is a problem with the car and it tells you to stop. Anyway, you should get the car checked at a service, or at least a diagnosis with a scan tool.

Salut. Mulțumesc! Suspensia nu este pe aer, e hidropneumatica. Nu am avut nicio problema cu suspensia, in schimb am avut niste probleme cu bucșe, bare antiruliu și am schimbat ambreiajul.

The point of having the car in the lowest position is when driving on the freeway for example, it reduces drag and thus fuelconsumption when at high speed.
That would be true if it would be possible, but it is not. However, the car automatically lowers itself a little bit when driving on a good surface at high speed ;-)

e mai bun mijlocul volanului fix dpdv al sigurantei. Fabricantii nu-l practica pt ca e ciudat si lumea nu-i invatata. Dar imagineaza-ti un accident unde sare airbagul. El se va declansa perfect indiferent de pozitia volanului, pe cand la alte masini... depinde.

Mi-am dat seama ca este de 140 cand am vazut compartimentul motor. Eu am doua furtune care pleaca din fata, banuiesc zona EGR. E f ok 163 si foarte puternica

At first, when I bought the car, that was my exact thought, that I have to change the hydraulic oil, but I took it to Citroen and they said that it doesn't need to be changed or at least not yet. I'm starting to have doubts about Citroen here in my town lately and maybe I'll check with someone else to see if it needs to be changed :-)

Thank you. It is indeed very comfortable. To be honest, I didn't try it, but I think it could work, because one time, when I had a flat tire and I went to the shop, they raise the car and while they were fixing the flat, the car automatically raised the missing wheel (engine off and all that). After they put the fixed wheel back, I had to raise the whole car so they could pull out the jack :)) It was funny. I have to switch to my summer tires soon and I will try it ;) Thanks for the idea :D
The only bad thing with this car is that it is pretty complicated and we don't have good mechanics for it. As I told another person in the comments, I have a knocking coming from my left front tire and the guys at Citroen were unable to fix it for me. A new problem that just appeared is that the clutch is slipping at only 116000 kilometers. I bought it second hand and have no idea how the first driver was driving it. I will change it as soon as possible and hopefully will have no other problems :D All in all, I love the car. It is very silent and comfortable and as a plus, if you buy a new one now, it has 180HP instead of 140HP as mine has ;-)

At the moment i have an old Toyota Corolla year model 2000, technically in good condition but badly rusted, so i need another car in near future. I'm seriously considering Citroen C5 with hydroactive suspension, year model something between 2005-2009 with 2.0 gasoline engine&AT. I'm just little worried that is it too fault sensitive, and i mean hydro suspension, but also the car over all. Is it worth to buy..?
You have 10km/h limit at the lowest and the highest position. The lowest position is not for the highway. Actually, if you want to lower it while going faster than 10km/h, it doesn't accept the command. For the highway, the car automatically lowers for a better fuel efficiency.

De altfel asa m-a si prostit cel de la care am cumparat-o, ca e de 163, dar avand in vedere ca am mers de la Oradea pana la Constanta dupa ea, am zis ca nu e asa important. Trecand de la un C3 cu motor de 1.4 hdi de 68 de cai, la unul de 140, pentru mine diferenta e colosala ;-)

Salut. Da, am câteva probleme cu ea și sunt programat la un service despre care se spune că e foarte bun. Îmi patinează ambreiajul din când în când, ceva probleme la regulatorul de presiune de motorina și mai nou nu se mai ridică pe cea mai înaltă treaptă. Să vedem câte reușesc să rezolve.

nu-i vad rostul sincer...mai ales cu restrictile de viteza...in afara faptului ca poti trece peste ceva...tipic citroen...nu zic ca nu este o optiune buna dar ...
Adevarul e ca suspensia aceasta are un alt atu pe care nu il pot pune in video sau inca nu stiu cum. Este extraordinar de comfortabila masina. Recunosc, de doi ani, o singura data am avut cu adevarat nevoie de facilitatea de a o ridica, in timp ce mergeam pe un drum destul de prost, cu geata si fagase. Celelalte masini tot incercau sa iasa din fagase ca sa nu "dea cu burta" si alunecau inapoi. Eu doar am ridicat-o si am mers linistit pe mijloc. :-D
+alien You are right. As a matter of fact, there is a small knock coming from the front left wheel. I changed everything that Citroen said I should and it is still there. It is not only expensive, but complicated as well and few people know how to service it :( It is indeed very comfortable :D
I had the same problem with left front wheel btw i own Xantia and it happened only on bigger bumps, guys from the service changed the shock absorber. Supricingly it was working had no problems with raising and lowering car but when they took it off it was broken inside and there was that knocking noice done. Hope you get that done cos u may have other problems in future with it (as guys from service said if it isn`t changed on time it knows to shoot it upwards and bend of brake hoods :D )
I really appreciate your advice, and I bet it could be the cause, but I would like someone to be sure of it so I don't have to pay the whole operation and still have that knocking. I've done this once with the guys at Citroen, payed about 180$ and no results. The service should have payed for that because it didn't fix my problem, but noooo...
I`m not taking my car in official citroen service cos they got high price on everything and charge too much, instead i`m taking it to local shop where family members are working (two sons and father) but the father has 20 years or more experience in one of biggest Citroen service in France,donno wich one or where i`m telling what he`s told me and they`re the only that knows citroen`s from bottom to top. They know the problem from hearing how car`s running or from what noise is making when on road. Recently i got oil leak from hydraulic pump and was losing 1.5 L per week when i take it there i only told them that i got weird clicks when i start engine :D and gues what they say: ok we`ll check hydraulic pump it must have leaks somwhere and you`re losing oil and there for those clicks cos pump doesn`t have enough pressure in it. I was like wow wtf :D sorry for long msg my point was take a trip in nearby towns check for other services, cos not everyone knows what they are doing . ;)
You are very fortunate that you have people close to you and with great experience. I would like that too. I've heard about a service here in Oradea that is specialized in Citroen and I'm willing to give it a try. I will soon post a video trying to record that knocking, maybe someone on the internet previously heard it and maybe give me some advice :D

The lowest position is used to work on the suspension spheres by decompressing the system. It is not just to be good looking ;)
That is not true. To work on the suspension you must decompress the whole sistem using the diagnostic tool and it lowers the car much more than the lowest position. I've seen this, believe me.
The low and high suspension positions is made for putting spheres out of pressure when you need to change them
Don't forget that you use the suspension to change tyres without a jack on all hydropneumatic Citroens from 1955.
And if you have a high speed puncture you maintain stability and braking.
Most of them can be driven on 3 wheels on full height suspension at low speed.

Hi, how is your C5 after these years when you recorded the video? Any malfailure with the suspension or engine? Thanks for helping 🙂
I used it for 5 years, I don't own it anymore, but during that time, I had only a few problems. The fuel pressure regulator, and the clutch. The suspension at some point got a little confused and was not sitting at the correct height, which led to other problems like not being able to fully raise the car, but after 15 minutes of tweaking with a 10mm wrench, it was working linke new.

I like the unique Citroën hydraulic suspension, I am glad it exists. But I am scared it would have problems, I don't have much money to lose on repairs or maintenance so I would most likely buy Japanese or Korean.
I like Timing chain engine, Japanese torque converter automatic transmission, single mass flywheel, coil suspension and preferably with no complicated stuff like DPF (FAP or Urea Fluid based system), GDi, hybrid system etc. Or the horrible dual mass flywheel. Unfortunately it will become difficult to find used cars without this stuff in the near future.

As far as I know, you don't need to change the oil, but maybe I'm wrong.
@@soultrain8135You are mistaken, it needs to be changed approximately every 5-8 years. Total lds is usually poured, but in someone they pour whatever is suitable in terms of viscosity. For example, I will soon change to mineral hydraulic oil The viscosity should be between ISO 15 and 22.

I am the owner of a citroen c5 2011 exclusive and i asked the seller the same question. For what purpose is the lowest suspension? He responded that it is for when you will not use the car for a long time,like this you will protect them and they will last longer. Don't know if it is really true.
I honestly don't see any use for it either. I was told that you can use it if you want to load the car with luggage easier. I don't use it. Also, I don't this it is recommended to leave it on the lower position because all the joints and bushings will be under tension. Just my humble opinion ;-)

The reason I’ve been told when my parents bought theirs (2001 and 2010 models) was to make it easier to tow a large trailer. Instead of fiddling with the height of the trailer or caravan in my parents’ case, you could just lower the suspension and drive under the trailer hook and then raise the suspension (have been really useful on numerous occasions). I believe that is also the reason there are switches for raising or lowering the suspension in trunk of the car.

From what I've heard, it isn't impossible to replace parts by yourself, but you need to lower the car to the maximum level by using a diagnostics tool in order to release the tension in all the suspension parts.

Hi. Nice video! How should I know that particular C5 is fitted with hydractive III suspension? I know that Citroen made these models (facelift, 2008-2010?) with hydractive and with spring suspension. Hey. Thanks. Yes, the cars with hydractive suspension are more expensive, but now much more. If you are next to the car, the easiest way to make the difference between these two, is to look above the wheel and if you see a spring, it is obvious. Another thing, you could look for the controls of the suspension which are located in the rear of the gear shift lever. There should be 3 buttons on the manual one: two arrows and one sport button. These buttons are present on the automatic gear box one too. If there are no such buttons, then the car has the normal suspension.

Te salut. Da, o mai am, dar tocmai am pus-o la vânzare. Probleme majore nu am avut cu ea. Cea mai mare a fost că a trebuit sa schimb ambreiajul la 135000km, dar posibil sa fie vina celor de la reprezentanta (poveste lungă). Una peste alta, e cea mai silențioasă și mai confortabila mașina pe care am condus-o.

Yes, no matter if you get in or out, it waits for all the doors to be closed (including the boot) and then levels the car automatically to the drive position.
I actually had I generation and it always amazed me that the more people came in the more comfortable it drove.

Could you change a flat tire with only High level position? Will the car stay on 3 wheels?
I don't see how you could take of the wheel :)
How to change a tire:
1. Loosen the bolts of the tire you need to change.
2. Raise the car to max position
3. Place something like a jack under one of the jacking points, where is punctured tire is... (even a chunk of wood high enough will do)
4. Lower the car onto the jack.
5. Undo the bolts completely, and the rest is like changing the tire on any other car. Except you have a built in jack, in the form of the Hydropneumatic system.
So, keeping it in high position won´t work. The suspension will always try to "keep all 4 wheels on the road", so it would press down the flat tire. But when the car lowers, physics will do the job to lift the one wheel off the ground.
BUT: If you DON´T put on a new wheel and raise the car back up again, there is a good chance the suspension will level out the car and you can drive on three wheels. Not on highway speed, but it works.
Nice anecdote: In August 1962 this suspension saved the life of french then-president Charles de Gaulle from an assassination attempt. Even though the wheels of his Citroen DS were punctured by bullets, the suspension kept the car level and in drivable condition so he could flee from the assassins.

As far as I remember (I don't have the car anymore), it is normal to say stop while the car is not moving and has the ignition on, but the engine is not started. If it says stop while driving, then there is a problem with the car and it tells you to stop. Anyway, you should get the car checked at a service, or at least a diagnosis with a scan tool.

Marcello Marchetti That is actually a very good question. Believe me, I wanted to post a video demonstrating exactly what you asked, but we didn't see any snow this winter. From what I've seen last winter, it's not much different than a normal traction control, but it has a fancy name.

Salut. Mulțumesc! Suspensia nu este pe aer, e hidropneumatica. Nu am avut nicio problema cu suspensia, in schimb am avut niste probleme cu bucșe, bare antiruliu și am schimbat ambreiajul.

Hey there. From what I've heard, no, it's not possible with this generation. I haven't tried it though and I'm too afraid to try. :-)
I've heard it is possible,but it's not really reccommended as the pump is getting too overloaded and it might get damaged fatally.

The point of having the car in the lowest position is when driving on the freeway for example, it reduces drag and thus fuelconsumption when at high speed.
That would be true if it would be possible, but it is not. However, the car automatically lowers itself a little bit when driving on a good surface at high speed ;-)

e mai bun mijlocul volanului fix dpdv al sigurantei. Fabricantii nu-l practica pt ca e ciudat si lumea nu-i invatata. Dar imagineaza-ti un accident unde sare airbagul. El se va declansa perfect indiferent de pozitia volanului, pe cand la alte masini... depinde.

At first, when I bought the car, that was my exact thought, that I have to change the hydraulic oil, but I took it to Citroen and they said that it doesn't need to be changed or at least not yet. I'm starting to have doubts about Citroen here in my town lately and maybe I'll check with someone else to see if it needs to be changed :-)

Thank you. It is indeed very comfortable. To be honest, I didn't try it, but I think it could work, because one time, when I had a flat tire and I went to the shop, they raise the car and while they were fixing the flat, the car automatically raised the missing wheel (engine off and all that). After they put the fixed wheel back, I had to raise the whole car so they could pull out the jack :)) It was funny. I have to switch to my summer tires soon and I will try it ;) Thanks for the idea :D

The only bad thing with this car is that it is pretty complicated and we don't have good mechanics for it. As I told another person in the comments, I have a knocking coming from my left front tire and the guys at Citroen were unable to fix it for me. A new problem that just appeared is that the clutch is slipping at only 116000 kilometers. I bought it second hand and have no idea how the first driver was driving it. I will change it as soon as possible and hopefully will have no other problems :D All in all, I love the car. It is very silent and comfortable and as a plus, if you buy a new one now, it has 180HP instead of 140HP as mine has ;-)

You have 10km/h limit at the lowest and the highest position. The lowest position is not for the highway. Actually, if you want to lower it while going faster than 10km/h, it doesn't accept the command. For the highway, the car automatically lowers for a better fuel efficiency.

Trecand de la un C3 cu motor de 1.4 hdi de 68 de cai, la unul de 140, pentru mine diferenta e colosala ;-)

Salut. Da, am câteva probleme cu ea și sunt programat la un service despre care se spune că e foarte bun. Îmi patinează ambreiajul din când în când, ceva probleme la regulatorul de presiune de motorina și mai nou nu se mai ridică pe cea mai înaltă treaptă. Să vedem câte reușesc să rezolve.

Adevarul e ca suspensia aceasta are un alt atu pe care nu il pot pune in video sau inca nu stiu cum. Este extraordinar de comfortabila masina. Recunosc, de doi ani, o singura data am avut cu adevarat nevoie de facilitatea de a o ridica, in timp ce mergeam pe un drum destul de prost, cu geata si fagase. Celelalte masini tot incercau sa iasa din fagase ca sa nu "dea cu burta" si alunecau inapoi. Eu doar am ridicat-o si am mers linistit pe mijloc. :-D

+alien You are right. As a matter of fact, there is a small knock coming from the front left wheel. I changed everything that Citroen said I should and it is still there. It is not only expensive, but complicated as well and few people know how to service it :( It is indeed very comfortable :D
I had the same problem with left front wheel btw i own Xantia and it happened only on bigger bumps, guys from the service changed the shock absorber. Supricingly it was working had no problems with raising and lowering car but when they took it off it was broken inside and there was that knocking noice done. Hope you get that done cos u may have other problems in future with it (as guys from service said if it isn`t changed on time it knows to shoot it upwards and bend of brake hoods :D )
I really appreciate your advice, and I bet it could be the cause, but I would like someone to be sure of it so I don't have to pay the whole operation and still have that knocking. I've done this once with the guys at Citroen, payed about 180$ and no results. The service should have payed for that because it didn't fix my problem, but noooo...
I`m not taking my car in official citroen service cos they got high price on everything and charge too much, instead i`m taking it to local shop where family members are working (two sons and father) but the father has 20 years or more experience in one of biggest Citroen service in France,donno wich one or where i`m telling what he`s told me and they`re the only that knows citroen`s from bottom to top. They know the problem from hearing how car`s running or from what noise is making when on road. Recently i got oil leak from hydraulic pump and was losing 1.5 L per week when i take it there i only told them that i got weird clicks when i start engine :D and gues what they say: ok we`ll check hydraulic pump it must have leaks somwhere and you`re losing oil and there for those clicks cos pump doesn`t have enough pressure in it. I was like wow wtf :D sorry for long msg my point was take a trip in nearby towns check for other services, cos not everyone knows what they are doing . ;)
You are very fortunate that you have people close to you and with great experience. I would like that too. I've heard about a service here in Oradea that is specialized in Citroen and I'm willing to give it a try. I will soon post a video trying to record that knocking, maybe someone on the internet previously heard it and maybe give me some advice :D
