You gave it a hell of a try. I would have had so much fun helping. I too haven’t ever seen a crank that bad. It makes you wonder how long they drove it after they should have stopped.
OMG starting without the dizzy! Thank you so much for showing that! Got a good laugh and it's the same level of my VW repairs. You turn out fun content.
🤣 I was editing the vid and was like " i can't put a vid out without it at least 1/2 a$$ running ....I'm gonna go try it" . Well at. least it provided a good ending . Glad you enjoyed it William, thank you.
I live in "way Upstate NY". I drove a 1966 Bug to college in the mid 70's. We didnt have that fancy block heater. We ran a cord out to the car and placed a 150 watt spot mounted to a board under the motor. Very helpful at -30F.
You have to be one of the best channels with vw content, We are right there with you wanting that to start, even late distributor less LOL! Love your optimism and persistence, only way to get it done.
Great effort, you gave it a red hot go. =) Little bit of end play never hurt anyone. =) Awesome content as always, can't wait to see the rarest car you have ever bought, should be epic.
I had a similar case with a car I bought for 900$, seller claimed it was rough but all it needed was a shift coupler/bushing and a generator to run. I threw a junk pack on it and it fires right up and idles beautifullly, took it home and replaced the parts and when I went to drive it, HORRIBLE NOISE the flywheel scraped against the bell housing the crank had so much end play thrust was completely smoked… but it idled perfection
Very rare to see a 60 years old Bug. They were like Electrolux vacs. Most parts would fit most models. At 10:20, very cool! Let there be (dash) lights!
Wow.... the generator pulley still has the painted numbers visible. I've only seen a few of those, and im fortunate that mine has the same. Usually by now they are long gone.
sometimes when there is not enough compression a little starting fluid gives it a little pop or 2 and that blows the rust off of the valve seats. Then she fires.
It's a long shot, but cranking it over on 12 volts might get the cranking speed up and build a bit of compression. Put some oil down the bores first of course to help. If it does start, it is going to be a loud one! Where I live you can't even give a 1200 engine away. Too bad I live 1000's of miles from you... Love those Turkis Beetles...
If the condenser is bad, you can just cut the wire to the points. It should spark that way, but it will wear out the points faster. If it is really the compression, you can take off the rockers and smack the valves a few times so they seat better. But it kinda looks like you have a broken crank with all that movement.
How do you know when it's in the hole? Sigmund Freud would have a field day with that one! Love the show. A former 62 Beetle owner (my first car) and former Vermontahawk.
I bought me a pair of wells Lamont mechanic gloves I am a field service technician specializing In hvac and I use those gloves daily twisting wrenches 5 years in and the glued on rubber on the palms fell off but the thin leather fingers and palms have no holes they have held up pretty good
Just an FYI: when you have a known/suspect low compression engine that's when you try some starting fluid. It will ignite when gasoline won't vaporize.
..... DoooooooooooooD ! ! ........you found it !!!,,,,,,that's my old car.........(no,,,it's blue though)😯😯.......get some new ones,,wallyworld always has new one,,you wore those past good,,,...I heard the clunck all the way here in land o' lakes,wi... Tnx,for the vid!!.....I'm 62' y.o.,,,,this car shows it.😯😯😐😐notsorry
Hi there i have a 1973 vw super beetle auto stick was wondering if you happen to have the transmission fluid canister that's located under the passenger side rear fender by any chance
always wondered why the crank moves horizontally while cranking with a worn thrust bearing. Does the distributor drive gear push against crank doing this?
Definitely doesn’t sound like there’s much compression at all…. With the end play it has it’ll change the timing every time the crank goes in and out. Good try-ish!
Do you know the paint code of that car? Could it be robin's egg blue? Or maybe Marina blue? I have one that looks the same color but Marina blue did not match it.
Ha! She’s toast! I have one that smokes so bad, that mosquito squad wanted to hire me. Oh, and the smoke gets into the cabin and looks like a scene out of Cheach and Chong. She’s Toast!
Distributor drive and spacer need oil first before pistons rememburing the engine that are prone to that in damp cold envariments corrosion !,oil before turn or it will break rusted got very very slowly rock real pain in the rump roast!!! Down In Florida don't see that to much actual made to snap if there's no lubercant on distribitor drive thats why that bakalite fuel pump pin rides in oil then drops drown on drive gear also which lube distributor gear as well! Thats why if that bakalight fuel pin hold gets broken it messing with oil delivery to gears!
That made me laugh! “ It’s in THE HOLE”. Ya gotta love Caddy Shack references! Every time!
👍👍
It’s great you keeping these old veedubs alive. Living the dream!
thank you Pete
Your Lucky That Final Plug Didn’t Rip Out The Thread’s! Good To See Josh Is Help’n Get’n Those Leafs Sucked Up!
The most optimistic bloke on RUclips. Thanks Jason, always a pleasure to watch. Anyone with dirt bikes and VW's has to be on Santa's good list.
thank you Dale, I appreciate it

Thank you Mike I appreciate that. Happy new year.

Not giving up on you Jason. You'll get her running!!!
thank you Jim !!!
Its was still awesome.Everything is perfect. Thanks for the vid!
thank you DS, I appreciate it
You crack me up with your laughing. I'm so glad you have such a great sense of humor... You gave it your best, now put your 66 back together.
Awesome. I'm in Massachusetts so perhaps one day I'll meet you!
I’d move this one along… can’t wait for the next video
what !!!???!!! AB!?! we are usually on the same page haha
At least you gave it a heck of a try
thank you BB
The missing distributor at the end is priceless. I do the same kinda thing hahahaha
Looking forward to the next car you rescue. This one's stingy with it's stool sample. You gave it a really positive effort.
that was fun !! 🙃
yep

It's crazy to watch you and CT work on stuff most people would crush,or junk.
CT is getting it done on that 65👍
Too bad about the compression. Very interested in "the rarest vehicle I've ever bought." Thanks for sharing!
Love that Honda XL in the garage
thank you, still has the org dry rotted tires !

LOL. That spark plug matches the color of the car
Great video glad you posted keep them coming thanks

Great video . Gave it a hell of a try !
thank you!
Enjoyed the vid and look forward to seeing it run! 👍🏼👍🏼
Excellent video Jason :) another engine to install and get going to then be running no time Flat !
thank you Andrew
@@5150mxVW welcome Jason :)
Oh man!! Late at night and no dizzy in it 🤦🏼♂️😁 That crank end play was kinda wonky 😳
Back in the early 90s had a bug with the same crank play in it...chewed itself to death....then released all its oil at about 50mph!!!!🤣
When that crank pulley moved 1/2" I burst out laughing and said.. he'll never get that thing started now...
Sometimes you win and sometimes you lose, it's all in the game👍😎
Well at least you gave it a good try . You can’t always get them all to run. But I enjoyed watching you try that’s what really counts.
thank you Marty, glad you enjoyed it👍
Afternoon mate 👍
Love the persistents J
thank you👍

Sorry sunshine; you can’t win em all. As they say loose the battle but win the War. Cheers Steve 🍺🍺🍺
The main man is home you better wait for him in future .he's your lucky mascot
:))👍
Greetings from Hampshire.
Greetings
You are Amazing Freeing Up that Crank Main Bearings , maybe it’s the Pilot Shaft ,
That's some End Float :( Oh well at least you tried your best to get it to run.
Sure you will sort it
Great video mate 👌
Wow.... the generator pulley still has the painted numbers visible. I've only seen a few of those, and im fortunate that mine has the same. Usually by now they are long gone.
nice job.
thank you Jim
Bluetooth dizzy!! Good one Sir!
😆
Sure enjoyed this one as I do all your videos. yep extra crispy for sure, but I sure thought she was going to go there at the end.
thank you Karen I appreciate it
They all run Jason that’s if you’ve got a distributer in 😂 good job and you unstuck it 👍
🤣👍
5:02 it looks clean
What a rip, to the bone!
Wow man you got a "General Lee"
close , 70 Charger
Ciao dude lovely from Tanzania 🇹🇿
sometimes when there is not enough compression a little starting fluid gives it a little pop or 2 and that blows the rust off of the valve seats. Then she fires.
Poor little car. Great video.
Ok! I had a feeling I got up and I missed it.
She said there will be days, and nights, like that!

✌️ Peace
Maybe you should have plugged in the sump heater, just needs that extra heat to pop off 😇
🧐 :)
Mine was worse on the crank play. Had to go with the max size on the bearing after machining it. It runs fine now though.
I bought me a pair of wells Lamont mechanic gloves I am a field service technician specializing In hvac and I use those gloves daily twisting wrenches 5 years in and the glued on rubber on the palms fell off but the thin leather fingers and palms have no holes they have held up pretty good
Well that's just not gonna happen, you have to get it running LOL
Just an FYI: when you have a known/suspect low compression engine that's when you try some starting fluid. It will ignite when gasoline won't vaporize.
Nice try anyway. The play in the crank had to be last nail in the coffin. Just clapped out, not your fault. Fun to watch. Ahhh, autumn in New England.
Sounds like its going to run

Can't believe you pulled the distributor from the beautiful '66. NO!!!!!! 😀
Round One - belongs to the bug .. .. .. ha ha ha ha ha - round two coming up !! Best of luck.
it sure does, and that was of course the edited version😆....thank you Henry
Hey…it was a good attempt.
Time to teardown and rebuild the engine. Good luck.
Sonmetimes they're just too far gone. Crush it
you both got Barn skunked. Musty's was extremely damaged as well
I'll take my org paint 62 Beetle over any 72-74 Ghia !😄

Endeavor to Persevere Jason. But probably not without the distributor though. 🙂👍

Have a great weekend buddy. Need more Josh in an upcoming video 👍
You can’t hurt it😅
I got an engine the other day that "runs good"!! There was a pile of rust chowder in the cylinder with the open valve, wouldn't make a full rotation.
Lol it must be a Jason thing to be so persistent lol 👍
Haha , you know I’m still out here trying lol
Is that the same charger from a few years ago?
no i have a plethora of Gen 2 Chargers😆....of course it is :))
What Thrust Bearing?
Did you check the coil contact point inside of the original cap? You should’ve pulled the whole engine out of the ‘66…then it would’ve run.
Don't even think m1 could resurrect that one without a major rebuild
Put the wheels on- It's a pusher!
it does roll nicely :)
Good effort, but can’t win them all. 🇦🇺🇦🇺👍👍
She's Cranky alright! Valiant effort bud.
haha, thank you Joseph
Hmmm... I bet that if your great son Josh would've helped, the engine would've started. 😁😜😘

L380 Turkis, nice 60's color
Where's the distributor gone? 😂😂
It's a shame, you've tried everything to get the beetle to start. But he didn't want to, not even at night.😉

Any info if any one sells used beetle parts around New Jersey for major beetle restoration

Are you getting a Type 34?
that sounds like the spark plugs arent even in it when cranking!!!! super low compression like the valves are super tight.
