Still there
Hey @Ed Bolian! I had the pleasure talking with some of the last US AMG guys 30 years ago. I think one guys name was Barry. He was quite the character and salesman. He bought out all the remaining Chicago parts I believe. They were basically closing out NOS parts. I was looking to source a few parts for my genuine Euro 82 Mercedes 500SE AMG. I am the second owner of the car bought in 1993. The original owner actually lived in Kansas City. The owner spent $40k for the new car and $30k on the AMG modifications. It’s a very rare euro spec 500SE in black/cream beige. This is the short wheel base top engine sedan which you never see. Most all 500 sedans are long wheelbase SEL’s. Bill Koch had a charcoal US Spec 500SEL sedan. Probably the only two real AMG’s in Kansas right here in Wichita! One guy a Billionaire and the other a broke salvage guy! Mine was built with full exhaust including the AMG headers, limited slip 3.06 diff, early deep chin ground effects with fender over riders, and 16x8/16x9 AMG wheels. Have never been able to determine if it has AMG cams or not. It’s fast! It was fun talking to the guys as they had basically come to the end when Mercedes took over. I was looking for a rear muffler as mine was getting bad. They didn’t have one unfortunately. One amazing thing I did buy from them was the complete AMG brochure and parts catalog. It’s amazing and shows everything available and all styles of cars built including the Hammer you are talking about. I still have the car and everything. Funny story is someone clipped my front spoiler and damaged the corner many years ago. I looked for 10 years for the correct replacement. The only thing I found was the more blunt later style. One day I was doing my weekly eBay search for my spoiler, two popped from the same seller. Same part number and all! Understand, this was a euro only, early 1st gen aggressive design deep lip sedan only spoiler with fender extensions . Basically a Unicorn. I bought both for like $300 shipped!!! I would have paid 10 times that. I still have both on the shelf! Going to install when I get the car repainted as it’s showing it’s age now. Oh yea, I paid $10k for the car in 1993. Had to get a loan and struggled every month to make the payments. Lol. Time to get it back on the road!!!
Where do we see pictures?? I have a widebody sec amg genuine
I hate to ruin your story Bob but the 500SE was much more common than the 500SEL in continental Europe.
@@Marklin15 we are not in Europe. Lol. Very rare in the USA.
I found an old amg brochure listing the parts available for some 280e w123 and more, my god the paper they used back then was so high quality 30 years later it still looks fresh only some minor stains. Very lucky to find an old memorabilia item courtesy of my father
Any intel on the guy who bought the remainder of NOS amg parts?
Looking to source parts to rebuild a baby hammer. 3.2L w201.
Thanks
I remember that car in our garage as a kid. My dad has been best friends with Rob Deer since childhood. Wow what a story I can’t wait to send this to him
cool story
Which car?
“We had two bags of grass, seventy-five pellets of mescaline, five sheets of high powered blotter acid, a salt shaker half full of cocaine, and a whole galaxy of multi-colored uppers, downers, screamers, laughers... and also a quart of tequila, a quart of rum, a case of Budweiser, a pint of raw ether and two dozen amyls.
Not that we needed all that for the trip, but once you get locked into a serious drug collection, the tendency is to push it as far as you can.”
Don't forget the window pane and the Mr Natural
Make the bastards chase you. They WILL follow...
Uh, Toledo Windowbox?
Can confirm, I quite using about ten years ago ( 92-2012) but I still get the itch to collect every once and a while. I don't have any want to use again but the thrill of the hunt is real.
The Thompson travel kit 😂
I remember the " Hammer Rims " back in the days. It was either 15 inch 5 Stars or Hammers . I had some on my car back then . To stunt on cats you would get the trim of the rims color coded to the same color of your car. Oh , the good ole days !!!!!!!
Hammers, 5 stars and vipers!
As nonchalant as anyone could put it Ed: “I like everything about that”
Question is, what part does he like everything about? 😏
Ed, I just want to say, as someone who is about your age. I'm glad you are so blessed to be able to tell these stories. Within the next 2 years i should be able to start on getting one of my dream cars. Thank you for giving me the drive to do so.
Thank you! Good luck with your own dream car.
I just picture the original owner blasting through the desert doing bumps of coke with the cops miles behind him with MC hammer's "Cant touch this" bumping lmao
That car when it came out was insane. In 1986 the German Mark crashed. At this time you got 3to1 on your money. Before the crash the Mark and Dollar where pretty much equal. We moved from Hamburg, Germany to Phoenix, Az in 1983 so we had only been in the states for about 3 years and my parents still had a good connections and friends there. My dad and I flew to Germany and his plan was to purchase a few brand new Benz’s and ship them back to the states. My dad ended up having the first ever MB 500SL in Arizona. He got the AMG 560 SEL which was my favorite car. The stance on it was so mean and that wide body was sick. The last car was a weird hybrid looking thing of a cross of a 190E and a 300E. I was only 9 years old at the time but I remember those cars. My dad did extremely well because a dollar bought you 3 German marks and if a car is 100,000 GM that’s only $33,000 US so you were getting them 2/3 off with the exchange rate.
That, and the markup of imports in general in the US, a BMW will cost more in the US than Germany so with the crazy exchange and markup, it was very profitable to do what your dad did
Really need that tech to come in to tell the inside stories about these cars being built back in the 80's. Those 4 valve per cylinder heads were such a huge innovation for that time.
Now THAT is a proper Mercedes. Not many other models can top a Hammer, save for say an SLR Stirling Moss or a CLK GTR. You need that car, Ed!
As an owner of a CE I recommend it, I can only dream of a hammer
CLK GTR...What a machine!!!
Ed tells the story of these cars exquisitely with his use of the English language.
I will undoubtedly get outbid on this thing but the short thought of adding it and it's story to the garage is exciting!
I’m surprised you posted the video before the auction ended. You’re just giving it more publicity and possibly more bidders
Just up your bid to 7 figures and run 10 minute RAID Shadow Legends promotions for eternity.

@@TheOriginalLugnuts He probably posted before the auction ended because he knows he's not going to win it or doesn't want to win it. The story is definitely worth telling and the story has more liquidity if he's trying to buy it, no matter how low his offer is since he always buys cars cheap enough to always have room to get out of it and make a profit
Rob Deer with a Mullet ripping this Hammer 150 through the desert during spring training is absolute 1991 peak performance.
I saw cocaine and I clicked.
The craziest AMG I ever saw was owned by the owner of the company I worked for when I was 19. This was in 1988, the car was a 1987 SEC coupe modded by AMG. It had a 6.2L V12. It was nuts.
Dream ride
The Original AMG Hammers were modified E class cars @ AMG in Germany on a W124 chassis using the 4 or 6 cyl variant, not a C class but an E class chassis. AMG became an engine manufacturer in 1984 due to an innovation: Melcher developed a completely independent cylinder head with four valves per cylinder. In 1986, AMG implanted the 5.0-liter V8 in an E-class coupe, which received worldwide fame under the nickname “The Hammer”. The 6.0 came later with the new double overhead cam design cylinder head based upon the 5.6 ci alloy V8 already being used.
To this day, this is a primary icon of the AMG myth in the United States. In the late 1980s, Daimler-Benz and AMG started to work together; first as official racing partners. The highlight of this period is the success story of the 190. The racecar, which was entered into the race by AMG with the support of the manufacturer, won a total of 50 DTM victories between 1988 and 1993. The cars are incredibly rare, with only 29 ever being made and only one being an estate. As a result, this gem is highly collectible.
I remember reading about the Hammer in Road&Track magazine back in 1986. It was the sedan. The color was red. I thought it was so cool how AMG turned a luxury car into a hot rod. I was around 12 years old. I have been a fan of Mercedes Benz ever since that article.
Wow yes I remember I was probably about 16 or 17 loved that car, a guy here in DC had a replica I’m assuming but he was a big time dealer back then so who knows but it was dead on

According to an article online at Road and Track magazine a nice low mileage example imported from Japan sold in 2016 in the $75,000 range which would probably workout to around $100,000 after inflation and corrected for the current state of the car market.

Great story Ed! There was a AMG Hammer that spanked my Porsche in the early 90's in Penticton, BC... and yes, I am sure a line or two were done on the dash, lol.

I used to camp out at Symbolic in La Jolla, Ca. Also dated a gal who's parents sold a house down the street from the Ferrari dealership thats there now too. Very cool area if you want to drive down streets and pass the occasional exotic. I really enjoy these stories. I may be making my own stories as California becomes more Communist~ and wants to get rid of cars all together, but I know a man who has one of the last true classic car junkyards out there on the west coast. We have gone all over the U.S. to take delivery and save some of these old icons. It'll be interesting to see what the future holds but I thought my adventures in the Navy was out there! This is by far the most every emotion one can think of, doing road trips in your own POV to help a buddy go get old cars and travelling on historic roads with these old rides as people flock over when you're fueling up or what not, telling them about the cars they may not know about like here! According to Wikipedia, the hammer was "very aggressive for the era". The last three words weren't needed.
Unrelated, but back in the day my father bought an 86 BMW L7 that had been repoed from a drug dealer who had gone to prison. It had a really nice candy apple red paint, a full body kit, and the Hammer wheels. Car had full leather interior, dash, doors, headliner. Between the rear seats was a cooler that ran off the AC system. A really sweet looking car that was way ahead of its time. It got stolen, and was found 5 years later in some guys garage with only 5 more miles on the odometer. He bought the car for $20,000 and was paid $60,000 from the insurance company. I can remember driving it, one of the sweetest driving cars I have ever driven. Not super fast, but felt like an extension of your body connected to the road.
6 litre V8 hell yeah thats a Hammer
I lived next to Westmont, IL... would sometimes wander into the AMG dealership when I was bored. They had a Ford/Shelby Cobra replica on the showroom floor, but not much else about the place impressed me. Especially after seeing Reeves Callaway make a C4 Corvette go 254+mph...!😉
All the best on your latest acquisition...the w124 amg hammer is just an amazing beast
This sounds right up your alley Ed cool fast car with a great story
Honestly, the hunt and the stories would, at least to me personally, be more worth than the cars. As cool as the older cars are, from a practical point of view, they are not worth more than 50 - 60 grand, because, let's be honest, that is how much money the same "much" of modern car will cost you. They are not really that good for driving from todays perspective at all. Don't get me wrong, I love those beasts, but the collector world is nuts, regardless of what you are into. I used to be a "spotter" for a friend, who ran a rare gun shop (anything from really old muzzle-loaders to rare modern firearms). I used to be the guy for the more modern stuff (WWI-today) as I speak several languages and was hence able to approach collectors and dealers all over Europe. And I know very well how much we could make on an interesting piece if the collector just "needed it". The search was always the best part, felt like Indiana Jones 😀
Very cool background, you should capture some of your stories in writing/video, I'm sure they would be very interesting!
I'm not one for 80s AMG or European cars, but even I have to admit they knocked it out of the park with that one.
