The lead singer in my first band’s mom worked for a concert promoter so we all got free tix for a Poison concert one time. We were really only interested in going to see Tesla as the opening act. It was after their glam phase and they were trying to be a credible band, but it still was uncool to be known to go to a Poison show. Anyway, we were pleasantly surprised- they put on a good show and they knew how to entertain. They were a classic case of “Fake it til ya make it”.

Sitting here laughing, the joke was people said they sounded like poison, I'm from their hometown back east so congrats to them for making it but it was determination and hard work not musical talent. There are more than a few frontmen that couldn't sing but as someone else has said, when they wiggled those hips the girls went wild. Removing the musical talent barrier to success as a musical act, funny but probably led to the end of the 80's rock scene. Some of that music was really good and is still very enjoyable, but no lipstick or Aquanet Superhold.

I give ramones a pass for that same reason of johnny's downstrokes, invented a sound and style that many copied. Joey's vocal melodies would work well put to piano music. Ramones song mama's boy part where Johnny actually does a pull off on a single note, teen spirit copies that note sound. Another thing with glam, those guys are all over the stage and still playing good while the alt bands are lingering around in heavy concentration of playing something simple and what should be effortless. This producer being interviewed mentioned Poison's "drummer" and you know well he probably remember Rikki's name, just had to do that for sake of being more of a jerk. Also when glam bands wrote serious songs, something to believe, house of pain, 18 and life...the lyrics are outstanding and not just party stuff.

It's weird to hear a producer so completely trash 90% of the stuff he made a living on. I get if he had to sue Poison he'd throw them under the bus, but he's just pissing on everyone as being unworthy. Honestly, it's not a good look. I have to assume he's one of those guys who speaks in binary terms: Amazing and Terrible. There's no in between which simply isn't how the world works. Bruce Swedien was that way. Spoke about everything in superlatives. Exquisite. Gorgeous. Terrible. Unusable.
I'm a retired recording engineer from L.A. and I worked with plenty of bands who require a lot of punch-ins and edits. That's the way it goes. Very, very, very few people are 1 or 2 take perfection. I've saw Poison live back in the day. Rikki Rocket may not be Neil Peart but he was completely solid and nowhere near "terrible." The Faster Pussycat record was killer front to back and remains a favorite from the era.
