Seeing Motley opening for Ozzy in Jan of 84 as my first concert was a life changing experience. Truly mind-blowing.
Mine was the Crue on Theater of Pain the next year.
@@AndrewGrey22 Nice! That was their first tour as headliners. Do you remember who opened?
@@LPCContentManagerI saw the Theater of Pain tour twice, Loudness in the summer and then Y&T in the fall
@@robpaxson4455 I remember Y&T opening for them, but Loudness must’ve been great! I liked them much better than “Summertime Girls.” 😂
Saw that bill in Portland Maine
I got Shout when I was 14, I showed my dad the photos on the inside of the album and he didn’t say a word, he just shook his head and walked away.
I wore a long-sleeve Twisted Sister t-shirt with a full-size Dee Snyder face on the front and pink barbed wire up both sleeves. My dad did more than shake his head!
yeah thats cause he knew you were being suckered in 2 ...just like he was
Sounds like he saw through the superficial silliness.
Just like any mature person sees through shallow theatrics in any time and era.
@@thomasbonnett4800 perhaps your dad had heard the terrible production
Yeah I know what your saying, on a similar note I got a big 4’ poster of Queen’s News Of The World tour live on stage and Freddie was wearing short short Candy striped shorts and no shirt and i’m thinking they were just typical rock gods and my dad walks in my room and goes…WTF is that…had no idea, I was about 13 or so.
Micks riffs are so underrated. His solos are memorable. Home sweet home solo is timeless.
Agreed,, huge riffs and solos you can sing along to. He really is the sound of motley imo.
One thing about Mick's solos: back in the day, they weren't as flashy as other bands, which had blazing speed and pyrotechnics. But, being blues-based, Mick's solos have arguably stood the test of time better than those other bands.
@@michaeleaster1815 I agree.
@@brysonz You all get it. At the time the rock/metal guitar world was all about "shred shred shred, speed speed speed" but honestly... nobody but other guitar players and wannabes really gives a shit about that. The average music fan just wants a cool riff and something they can sing along with.
Guitar nerds think of EVH as a shredder, but the real reason he was so huge is because he played catchy riffs, hooks and melodies that someone who never picked up an instrument could remember and hum to themselves.
Mars was very different from EVH of course, but he just didn't fall into that shred trap. He wrote melodies and hooks, and that's what usually makes a song a hit. Even today the world is FULL of shredders who can tap all day and play fast as hell... but they never get anywhere because they can't write a song or memorable solo to save their lives.
The Crue stand out amongst their 80's peers due to them literally being a "Motley Crue".. An eclectic group of guys with different backgrounds and styles and Mick especially as he was older and 70's guitarist into the blues, playing in an 80's hard rock/metal/glam band.. I don't think the Crue could have existed or had their success without those 4 individuals!. People like to bash Nikki, but they fail to realize (or don't know) that he writes All the lyrics and is the main songwriter, regardless of his simple bass lines!..
Ten seconds to love is such a badass hooky song. I love the whole album and back in 83 my buddy and I used to listen to that tape on my boombox on the way to grade school everyday and in class we would practice drawing the Crue logo along with the Van Halen logo. Loved that 80s era
One of my favorite tracks on the album... that one and looks that kill.
Absolutely…crank that shit up…
"Grade school"? That's too funny youngster. What the hell is grade school? I was in h.s. when SOTD came out.
@@frankferriolo9212 elementary my dear Watson. That’s grade school.

Mr. Werman...thank you for all your contributions and for all of the great music!
Yeah that's fair
“Danger” is an underrated Motley Crue song!!!
xoxo The Clarences
@Jax Teller underrated….lol
GIRLS GIRLS GIRLS sounds amazing. Five years dead is overlooked one of my favs.
Shout at the devil is definitely my favorite Motley record.... Great songs, really well produced..
Most people don't realize how much work a record producer is involved in the song writing process of almost every rock record out there.
If you think that these bands bring in all their songs finished and release ready, you are clueless. Most producers are great song writers.
Wrong. Most Producers are NOT good song writers. I don't know how you came up with that Bullshit.
Agree. Besides producers being song writers. They usually understand music theory. There's a whole nuther thing to it all. They like, have degrees in music from universitites.
Tom Werman was one of the quintessential producers of the 80s. ...some of the biggest and tightest sounding albums of the era/genre.
I love when the producers talk, ya get the truth . Tom n Beau hill great interviews
Still my favourite Crue album, Danger is my all time fav Motley song. Cheers
Great song! Tommy's cymbal chokes are epic to this day.
My favorite song as well!
@@Mopery Yeah man, those lyrics are like a prophecy of things to come. Cheers

shout at the devil and stay hungry ... 2 legendary albums
Very honest interview, thanx! Will probably never look at this album the same after this. Love Crue, and ...yep, Werman is a genius in his own right! Long live Metal!!
Mick Mars will always be the sound of Motley. When you hear that guitar you know who it is.
HaXaW u got that right! Love Mick!
He is the ONLY member that I have respect for. The other 3 are straight up talentless scumbags.
And this is coming from someone who liked them so much when I was younger, I was seriously considering a Theatre of Pain tat.
Man, that would have been a world-class fuck-up.
@@joeyvanostrand3655 Talentless? Only Vince Meal. The other three are phenomenally talented. But Tommy and Nikki are talented scumbags.
without Mick Mars they'd have been just another generic Sunset Strip band.
Hello. Tommy is the most naturally gifted (in a couple of ways) of the 3. But yes, Mick is an integral part of the band and it would be fair to say that he is underrated,
In my opinion it’s Micks guitar tone that made Motley Crue. Period.Ok I’ll admit Tommy Lee had alot to do with it. There everyone happy now?
mick and tommy carried that band onstage.
Without a Doubt. Mick made The Band
All 4 brought SOMETHING COOL to the band...but with out MICK they woulda never made any one look twice.
@@dwade6322 absolutely Correct. Even Nikki would never be a Star without Mick Mars. Bob Deal ✅❤️😎
There's always someone that makes that same comment on every motley video lol
He made the best record period they fucked up for not having him on everything else. That album is perfect.
Jon RAVENWULF Tom Werman alsoproduced “Theatre of Pain” and “Girls Girls Girls”
I heard these guys at the US Festival. Regardless of what Tom admits here, I am convinced that his input and high standards had much to do with the success/sales of Shout.
@@philfrank5601 I've heard them live many times and Vince has always sounded like shit live IMO. Best I ever heard himm was on Feelgood tour.
@@scottmarshall8953 truth....during Feelgood era the whole band was like a machine
@very droll Yeah. Just wish they'd kept Corabi.
@@vincevegas8529 I believe u vince. I'm a musician and I saw so many shows and had the contacts to get behind the scenes, not that many people pay close attention. @@jamescon55 Girls and Dr. Feelgood were better than any of the first 3 records IMO, and both were heavier, without needing a goofy pentagram to scare christians (aka shoot fish in a barrel). Mick's guitar playing is at its creative peak on Girls and Feelgood. I agree with you re: the stadium tour. It was shitty and paltry to criticize bands doing farewell tours that don't end up being farewell tours, the do exactly that, themselves...
Haha. The pentagram doesn't scare Christians just like the cross doesn't scare non Christians We are rock solid in our foundation.
Great Album !!!! Producer Tom Werman is a great producer. He got a great sound on that record.
Scorpions sound like the record. Best live rock band I've ever seen

After all these years I realized Motley is all about Tommy and Nikki being in tandem. They are the heart of their sound. Shout is definitely the best showmanship of that quality. Great Interview. Thank you!!!

@@jhaeck1 And yet the band could not exist without him!.
@Sly Rax boy you know about me keyboard warrier

Yeah and everyone but Mars is phoning it in with backing tracks, even though they’ve allegedly been playing these songs since 1981. That makes them either lazy, poseurs, or straight up frauds.
I immediately knew his name as being the guy who produced Cheap Trick. I mostly listen to metal now but I grew up on Cheap Trick (i'm 53 now). It is amazing to me how good Cheap Trick sounds even in today's standards. What a great producer. So cool that you were able to interview him! I also enjoyed your other interview with Beau Hill.
I'm 51, and LOVE CHEAP TRICK!! I hope you got a listen to their albums starting in 96. They started capturing their live sound. Awsome song writing! They still kill live & in studio!👍
Cheap Trick and Motorhead are the two bands where you can find big fans of theirs in ANY rock crowd. Hardcore punks, metalheads, glam rockers, people who just listen to Top 40 radio, everyone.
Can't beat Tommy Lee's drum sound on Shout At The Devil.
I remember watching a show called Night flight on the weekends as a kid. I do remember when live wire video came on and I thought it was a horror movie but was very memorized by the video!

People always mention what an underrated guitarist Mick Mars is. Which he is an exceptionally great guitarist. But nobody ever mentions what an incredible drummer Tommy is. Sixx is a better song writer than he is a bassist but his bass playing is quite adequate. Just my opinion
people always mention what a "great" songwriter Nikki is, but only their 1st album was great. After that, each album had one or two OK tracks and a bunch of filler
@@tomroutledge8900 wow, I totally disagree. I love the first five albums. Next albums, you're right, two cool songs and the rest are just fillers.
@@tomroutledge8900 I think he is a great songwriter , too fast , satd and dr feel good had some great songs on it . I think theatre of pain and girls had so much filler was because of the drug alcohol use within the band and nikki , who were more focused on that than the music
@@tomroutledge8900 what filler have yo listenend to shout at the devil or dr feel good girl girls girls or any of their other albums yeah some of them have some filler songs wich are just ok but all of them have at least 4 5 real bangers
Pretty spot on. Nikki was definitely the weakest link musically in the band, even though he was the main songwriter.
I still recall 1st time I heard Looks that Kill on radio, n loving it- not even knowing it was Crue. I had the debut album, but this song sounded different, way better. Shout at the Devil remains on my top 50 fav album list. The intro is fantastic! One of the best intros EVER. It STILL sounds amazing

Looks That Kill sounds like it was right off the debut album, not to be contrary.
When I first heard In the beginning, it scared the shit outta me! 🤣
I hate the fact that when they reissued "Shout At The Devil" on CD they got rid of the "pentagram" cover. I know they didn't want any more controversy with retail stores but they could've had the original cover inside so fans can flip the booklet around if they want to.
I have the Japanese version of Shout on CD which has the original album cover. The sound is incredible too!
The pentacle is why the album sold. It's why people like that album better. Because it has all the weird fetishy Christian stuff in it.
Reissued the cassette! I had the 4 way split portrait cover as a little kid in the mid 80's. So, as far as most kids copies ( vinyl wasnt "hip" in the mid to late 80's) it was the portrait. You can still find pentagram LP's in second hand stores and record bins.
How come I never see "Too fast &Shout" on cd in the stores? Awaiting reissue?

Also Dee, was not the original singer of Twisted Sister, Mike O'neal was. I know this because my father was the original drummer in Twisted Sister, not A.J., who was great.
Twisted Sister definitely had it's revolving door before they hit it big. I wish I could hear or see what they sounded like with the earlier incarnations. Especially the one with the black guy in the band. Jay Jay, post that stuff. LOL.

The Crue influenced so many bands it's crazy. They were the second coming of KISS in my opinion.
No, No I always considered Crüe a much more authentic band for sure... don't get me wrong I for sure see where you are coming from and truth be told you are right, but Mötley was real they didn't care about anything at all.
Yeah nah KISS was a totally different kettle of fish posers man.
@@firesideshats Ace was no poser lmao (and Peter to a lesser extent). As big of a party guy as anyone in the Crue
Any of you talking negatively about KISS should be ashamed of yourself. Great band
Mick's guitar sounded like a chainsaw to me as a kid.. I later learned he is tuned down a whole step to D standard. IDK if that's what made that sound or not but it was always my favorite guitar sound for a long time. Some of the best riffs ever
Mick was/is a VERY underrated guitar player NO doubt.
Micks tone is one of the best tones from the 80s imo. And yes he is very underrated. Motley crue is one of the biggest bands of all time let alone of the 80s and his guitar riffs are what made all of those songs
@@tonyborg6888 I AGREE with you.👍 Mick (obviously 🤭) could even make most of the lackluster "filler" CRUE tracks (that started taking OVER the songwriting on Theater 😒) sound GOOD/decent.... Whereas IF MOST anyone else back then "had THOSE songs?"... Nobody woulda gave 2 shitz about em. But...? It was the CRUE ....😏🤘
That tone is my love!!🤘
Tuned down to D with many songs in the key of G. Micks tone was evil.
Hell YEAH! Tommy Lee was at his prime during this record. And to hear Tom Werman talk about how solid Tommy was and virtually NO editing during SHOUT, and you can even hear that on the album. THAT, is a guy that was/is put on THIS earth, to play the drums! Wish Tommy Lee would have gotten into MORE hard rock drumming through the latter years than the hip hop garbage but....? Oh well. And far as getting much about "the actual production of SHOUT..." from this interview?.......Oh well on that too. Lol
Shout At The Devil is in my top 10 best metal albums ever
The producer does a hell of a lot during a recording. Nice to hear some interviews with the producers, and the producers that engineered some of these great classic albums..

I saw the Crue many times in Indy, they always sounded good live, especially Micks gutair!
Vince Neil always sucked live. Never sang all the words, never sang them the same - he used to piss me off because he ruined the fucking songs. I saw them 3 times and he sucked every time.
I saw them for the first time at MSA on their Shout tour opening for Ozzy on his Bark At The Moon tour.

When this was released, this was one of the rare metal cassettes that you could truly crank up on a boom box and it didn't get muddy. Because of the great production, and the somewhat rare drop tuning in those days.
Metal cassettes were the best.
What's drop tuning
@@lockandloadlikehell guitar tuning is lowered . Standard is E …Van Halen Eb … crue to D… real heavy metal bands Of today do c# so mick doing D back then was ahead of the curve.

Yeah, after SHOUT however, and then ALL the hype for Theater before it hit with Nikki raving it all up, and then we the fans got?🤔 CRUE REALLY ALL glammed up with Vince wearing a lace girdle, Nikki in striped joker suits, lace and more lace for the other members 😒 and ALL the black associated with the CRUE? NOW, it's pink. 😒 And also, NOW they're more of a joke with the awful Smoking in the Boyz room video and cover song (for a hit!), the infamous Home Sweet Home ballad etc. But yeah, LOTTA stinkers on Theater as it WAS one of the biggest disappointments for MOST "true old school CRUE heads" like myself and many others....And just when ya thought the music couldn't get ANY worse or bland? Girls Girls Girls (stupid azz name and song ain't much better) got phoned in....Then, the Feel bad craze Lol. Ohh yeah, I was there. Went through it ALL too 😏 But TOO FAST and SHOUT are STILL the CRUE's ONLY top listenable albums with Theater being thrown in for a couple few okay tracks IMO. Rock ON 🤘🔥🤘

@@dogslobbergardens6606 😄 Pretty much... Amongst plenty of "other things" 😏. Their ONLY, REAL claim to stardom/fame was/IS only their 1st TWO albums...TBH (leastways IMO)? The rest of the CRUE catalog is mostly JUST filler "gaaarrr-baaagggue", while there were/are plenty of other bands from that same era that actually have waaay better actual M.U.S.I.C. Producers are often overlooked for the albums they produced that ended up being MASTERPIECES!!! Shout At The Devil and Stay Hungry are PHENOMENAL albums. I know that Twisted Sister did the Stay Hungry album again years later called Still Hungry which is decent , but the original in my opinion is much better. I love listening to interviews with producers because you will hear things about what really went on because band members would never tell the whole truth because of fear of their reputation being ruined.
Agree Stay Hungry Is a notch above in my humble opinion..
The lord's prayer thing was on Cheap Trick's album Heaven Tonight, the song was "How are you " and the voice was Rick.

Here's to another 54 great years of jamming and listening.
The bass on the demos for the first two records is all straight, on the releases there's a lot more fills and is so tight with Tommy. I ve wondered if someone else played the bass on them
At the time of shout I can’t recall any band that had that sound.
are you kidding? silly lil kid
Well , i dont know now. Lets see, i was only 8 when sout at the devil came out, well, and im not sure. It depends. Was it released in 83 or 84. Regardless i fucking loved it- at that age. Now going back tothe comment that no one had this sound at the time. We know there were other metal bands out there at the time but the sound of music flipped over night when it came to the transition of music from 79-80. But with shout at the devil i have to agree. In terms of modern metal this album really does. to me, should take alot of credit. I mean, sure there was ratt-out of the cellar. Now im pretty sure shout at the devil came first and both groups had an album out prior tut o shout at the devil, but shout at the devil really delivered the modern metal sound to us. I mean around this time the metal scene exploded. So it would be hard to pinpoint which band created. It eveolved from feeding off of others in the same scene maybe. Hell who knows. I still have a spot in my heart for metal but lemme just say. Thank "whatever" for me discovering black flag- my war when i was 11 yrs old. Never looked back.

This album Iron Maiden Number of the Beast/Judas priest British steel Black Sabbath Mob Rules AC DC For Those About to Rock Twisted Sister Stay Hungry were some of the first albums that I ever got as a kid that weren't albums that were hand-me-downs from my brothers . I loved hearing how the order of songs was determined! As kid listening to cassettes I figured out this common formula on my own but its nice to know it was done by intent...best 2 songs were always up front, #3 started off Side B, #4 finished off the album. The rest were sprinkled amongst the remaining spots. Haha!
I want to really CONGRATULATE YOU for the idea of interview producers. As a sound student you are making the questions that I always had in my mind when I was listening to these legendary records. Sadly Motley Crue and others sell the mayhem, drugs, sex, etc .... In the books and films, but very little about songwriting and the making of records. I know that most of the people wants the "sex, drugs,r´r " thing, maybe there´s not too many people that really wants to know what instruments, amps, how they recorded ( specally in those days when records were made by craftmenship ... but now ... Well technology has good and bad ). Really good work, if you can ask them more about the guitar/amp rig the players use, the use of sound in the room, how they put the mics what type, etc ... And I guess I´m contradicting myself but Trent Reznor would be incredible. Yeah he is "hi tech" ... But man ... What sounds!! Keep the good work. Greetings from Spain.
To Fast For Love (the Electra version ) was their best will always be.
Too

Too Fast For Love is awesome...
I like the leathür version best, so sleazy and Raw.
The Elektra version is more polished.
Their best album for sure..
Yep.
@@bagofbones95 Agree on that . I love the Intro on too fast for Love the Song.
Top ten album of the 80s.
Mick was absolutely underrated
Thanks for mentioning the Eagles. The 80s were missing that kind of music. Don't get me wrong, being 16 in1987, dropping out of school, going to concerts, meeting older girls: it was great; however, The Eagles, Boston, the Byrds, Zeppelin, etc., were the greatest rock bands ever.
Mtv didnt hurt nuthin. As soon as we seen the video we went n got the album and ofcourse my Buddy and I played guitar so we basically learned that whole album in a week and started our own band. It was great.
In 1982 I was going to a private Christian school. A new girl showed up. She told me she would come to school with no bra (BIG NO NO), if I bought her a Motley Crue tape. She did. I did. Then I became a huge fan...Fun times.
Loved that album 🤘, still to this day 👺
When the album came out, I saw the cover of the tape. I thought it was awesome, immediately thought of Escape from New York because of the appearance. I guess they watched that and Mad Max all the time then. Nikki was the one who inspired Me to write my own songs. Mick was killer and so was Nikki's song writing. The lyrics were great. And that's their last good album PERIOD.
great interview
Great interview!!! I love the nerdy tech questions!
Decent interview but shame Werman doesn’t remember all of those little details we wanna hear about
I like Toms explanation on Vince’s bounce tracks!
