    Stay Hungry was their MOST successful album. It went triple-platinum 20 years ago!!....and has sold very well around the world ever since! Why is Dee complaining? The other albums only went gold. Also, "We're not gonna take it" was the CHEESIEST song on the album.

    According to Dee's autobiography, he wasn't a multi-millionaire for life as Tom claims. There was a time when he was flat broke and didn't have a cent to his name. At any rate, Dee needs to show a bit more gratitude towards Tom for producing his most successful album and songs of all time.

      That's because Dee immediately contracted LSD (Lead Singer Disease) and began buying yachts, mansions, sports cars, a Gym in NYC. Then, when they made the terrible follow-up album, Dee couldn't pay off everything and filed bankruptcy - that was a Dee problem.

      Right. He and his wife needed to shop at Goodwill. Nothing wrong with that, but ironic IMO, cuz Dee didn't do drugs. You can understand how some guys blow their money, pun intended, but what was Dee's excuse? Plus, he's been happily married for many years. So women weren't bilking him. Has to be all on Dee IMO. Still enjoy their early music though.

      Tom should have said that he set Dee up to be a multimillionaire. Dee being broke is his own fault. It sure wasn't cause Stay Hungry was a bad album and didn't sell.

      @@juve3690Their families pitched in and helped, and Suzette became the breadwinner working for Bridezillas in the Hamptons and all over NY as well as doing hair and makeup for Howard Stern, but they had 3 kids by then so that was a lot to take on. I’m sure Dee was cooking breakfast and odds and ends, made the kids do chores to pitch in as well. He’s still doing gigs but doing office work. It took Ric Wake, who Dee helped out in the beginning, to get Celine to record a song Dee wrote, to “get back on his feet”. The major label deal with Atlantic was probably more of a curse than a blessing, although once Dee started licensing the songs out in the 2Ks, and the reunion, touring, working on Broadway, doing reality tv and being a lot more humble, all worked out for him. Yet this grudge over the production of “Stay Hungry” persists because they did a “Taylor’s Version”? Maybe Tom was more arrogant back then as well, and rightfully so if everything he produced was going platinum. Producers have a life span, just like Tarantino said about great directors, there’s a point where they should stop. Coppola just re-edits old movies. Lucas counts his billions but Scorsese and Spielberg are still cranking out movies. None of the top producers of 20-30 years ago are up for Grammys in 2023-2024.

    Dee acts embarrassed over Stay Hungry. Says it doesn’t capture TS’s aggression. What does TS do? Follow up with their biggest embarrassment Come Out & Play. “Leader of the Pack” “Be Chrool to your Scuel”. That’s how far TS was removed from the metal scene. Instead of coming back with an aggressive album , that metal heads would listen to, they release a blatantly commercial POS. TS became just an “MTV” band. They decided to make funny videos instead of good music.
    Dee singing “I met her at the candy store”. Get the F out of here. That’s on TS. They decided to make bubble gum. Teenage metal fans didn’t want to hear a remake of their grandmas music. The bubblegum bullshit , they made, doesn’t stand on its own.

    Having seen the band many times and been a Twisted fan since the late 70’s, before they made it big, I think I can say that “We’re Not Gonna Take It” is arguably what Dee and the Band were all about. You did not go to a Twisted Sister show and just stand there. Dee and Johnny (JJ) would rip you apart in their between song rants. Oh, they were so good at that and they were FUNNY. They would basically tag-team for, like, 20 minutes at a clip, taking turns berating tough guys in the audience, proselytizing on the ideals of Rock and Roll and Heavy Metal (although they really weren’t a Heavy Metal band - more an outgrowth of the Glam genre), insulting the club owner - everyone was fair game. Rock Music was very serious business to them…if you were against it you were the ENEMY. But it was all very entertaining. And actually, that was initially Johnny’s schtick, the whole rant and rave thing, according to Mike Vendetti, a sound man and great guy I worked with in the early to mid-80s, who knew them in the very early days. He said Johnny invented that whole thing. It was great. But the point is, they were on a mission to deliver Rock and Roll in its purest form to everyone, and YOU WERE GOING TO PARTICIPATE!! OR ELSE!!! And “We’re Not Gonna Take It” was their anthem. It underscored their whole attitude and reason for existing. So, when Tom said he didn’t exactly like the song, it seems it struck a chord. To Dee, it immediately branded him as a “Non-Believer”! Trust me - I know what Twisted Sister was about. And they delivered on Rock and Roll, every time. Their energy output - especially Dee - was enormous. They played to packed houses everywhere they went. You left their show a good exhausted. It was like Rock and Roll Church. But that’s my take on it, anyway. And I love Tom Werman…one of my favorite producers. I do miss those days seeing Twisted in the clubs…they were priceless.

    I'd say that there are three sides to this story. There's Tom's truth, Dee's truth, and the actual truth. Dee's complaint about Stay Hungry not showing how heavy the band could be is warranted, considering that Tom produced Shout At The Devil, which I consider to be the heaviest glam metal record out there. However, if Dee wanted the album to be heavier, he should have specified that he wanted it to sound heavy like Judas Priest or AC/DC, instead of just accepting whatever mixes were given to him. Also, I read in Dee's autobiography that Tom was snorting cocaine during the sessions off the soundboard, so maybe Tom's memory has gotten fuzzy because of that

      They are actually really good guitar players. The problem wasn't their playing it was Dee's song writing. Even Dee admitted the guitar playing on the songs is really simple, because he's not a good guitar player but the other guys didn't really help with song writing. He said he would have welcomed it because Eddie is a riff master. He was pretty much forced to write the songs because Jay Jay's song's sucked when he joined. Dee said he comes up with the song title, then the melodies and then tries to explain to the band how the guitar parts should go

    • @Gregbaltzer
      @Gregbaltzer 4 года назад +3

      @Mooch 514A solo should fit the song, not the guitarists ego. It would sound ridiculous to have a virtuoso solo over a simplistic song. Even Alex Scholnick said he doesn't play a fraction of what he's capable of with Testament because he plays what he feels the song needs, and the song is more important than the player. Shredding on a song when it's not needed just to prove to people what a great guitar player you are is stupid.
