Great stuff. Cold but beautiful out there. Glad you're liking the tent.
I felt very secure in the X-Mid despite the weather, finding it really hard to find something I don't like about it! Thanks for watching. All the best, Roger
Ah dan that was really nice to hear your input cheers pal I feel like I'm in safe hands here can't wait till mines here lads 😀👍
You ask why people follow you... we really enjoy your adventures for the gentle pace, good humour and total normal honesty, no rehersing, no crew, just you! Wish we could do more of what you are doing..we always look forward to the next one!
Thank you Lynn- that's very kind. I'm too old (and lazy!) to be messing about trying to be something I'm not. Glad you enjoy my efforts. All the best, Roger
Best display of that tents capabilities I've seen. Thank you 😊
People do seem to like the video. It's by far and away the most watched one of mine . Thanks for watching.ATB Roger
🏡🌧️
No spork! 😱Good for you Rodger, you're a hardy soul! Don't think you need to worry about the calories in that weather 😆 Nice to hear your tales of the Cairngorms. Thumbs up as requested. Good times! ATB - Sue
Thanks Sue. First time I've camped in snowy weather for many years.
Hello Roger. I knew instructors from Outward Bound Moray when I walked with Moray Mountaineering Club. Like you I started my love of hills in the Cairngorms in the 1960s. Have also bought a Durston xmid 1 solid recently to be used in similar conditions to yours. Good to see it holding up well.
As a 16yr old I was completely in awe of those guys. I probably still would be now! The tent did well though the long side doesn't like wind very much so it's important to pitch it with the short side into wind - same for most tents I guess. All the best, Roger
Nice tent and good stove.
Thanks for sharing
Thanks for watching. Not sure how robust the stove will be, but the tent is really well made so it should last a long time. ATB, Roger
MAN! You are having FUN! I wish my schedule wasn't so busy to enjoy time off.
Cheers buddy.
Love listening to your stories Roger 😊
Thanks Sarah. I have a few more which will no doubt come out when the nights draw in and I have to spend more hours in the tent. 😄🥰
That was indeed very cool! I came for the tent review and subscribed because of the wonderful personality and your obvious enjoyment for your surroundings:)
Thank you. Welcome to the channel.
Thanks for sharing your adventure my good Sir and your historic first time of meany that came after. Looking forward to the next one. Let it snow!
Thank you. Now I know the tent can handle the snow I'm looking forward to next winter!
Very inspiring mate and nice to see a similar age doing a proper hike with a big pack. Brilliant mate 👍
Thanks Bernard.
Fun adventure!
Yes it was, Thanks for watching
Hi Roger! Congrats with a new tent! The tent did very well I think, I'm impressed! Great video too! Have a nice evening😀🐈
Yes I'm very pleased with the tent so far. Glad you enjoyed the video. All the best, Roger
From one Roger to another. Enjoyed that 👍
Thank for watching.
Loving that tent, your audio is fantastic. Great work and effort
Thank you kindly!. This video seems to get views constantly!.
@@thewanderingforester timeless and this tent is very interesting to many
Definitely put to the test.
Yes, there's a definite hdifference between snow and rain when it's hitting your tent at some speed! Thanks for watching.
Your go pro was just fine what a brilliant scout vid atb mate and well played the snow cover was epic ❤
Glad you enjoyed it
Oh, it was Scouts that got me into hill walking. As we were from Essex I still remember that first trip to The Lakes and the amazing mountains.
Hi Roger, i just happened onto your RUclips channel. I have been watching reviews on this tent. This video convinced me to order one. Im in my 60s an live in the US near lake Ontario. Less than perfect weather always 0:15 makes me feel alive and young again. Great video. I am now your newest subscriber. Thanks for sharing.
Same, lol :) Have been watching reviews of this tent last week, and now your video poped up and I also believe I am convinced of getting it now.... haha. Thanks Roger! I will be sticking around, thanks for the review, the nice adventure you took us on and your authenticity :)
🙋♀️👍
Time to watch all the Xmid vids back Roger 🙌🏻 loved this ⛺️ ❄️
Thanks!
Love the video.. that looked so relaxing despite the weather!
Glad you enjoyed it! I think the tent had a lot to do with it - first time I've had enough room to sit up and relax.
@@thewanderingforester I Will Be In That Area Tomorrow doin horseshoe ridge with over night Camp! 🎪🏔
Have fun - the weather's looking ok for you.
Congratulations on your new tent Roger, it did you proud in that weather. Looked very cold 🥶
It was bitterly cold in the wind for sure. Pretty sure the X-mid will be my go to tent for quite a while. Thanks for watching, Roger
I bought this same tent (except I got the 2p) for hiking the Appalachian Trail in the US next year. I also plan to take it to the Drakensberg/Maloti in South Africa/Lesotho in a couple of months, where it can get very windy. I watched this video because of the wind and snow test and wow, I really feel confident with my choice of tent now! This is an awesome video, first one of your I’ve watched, and I can’t wait to watch more!
Thanks Nick. Whilst the X-Mids are not 4 season tents they do seem to hold up well in inclement weather, especially if pitched low, taut, with the ridge line pointing into the wind and peak guys used. Envy you going to the Drakensberg! All the best, Roger
Great tent review. Also loved hearing your backstory. My intro to walking was in the Beacons whilst at university so this video was a pleasure all round.
Thanks Helen. Its always interesting to hear how people got into the hobby. Thanks for watching. All the best, Roger
Great video, I’ve just bought the 2p version of this tent but haven’t had chance to get it pitched due to all the rain. It looks great. Thanks for sharing. New sub
Thanks for joining our select little tribe. 🙏 Yeah- weather has been pretty bad all month, I was hoping to get out again but no joy - maybe next week. Thanks for watching. ATB, Roger
Hi Roger good test👍. I use roasting bags , sandwich bags not really suitable for hot food, to boil my food inside my 0.9 ltr trangia kettle ! I
Nice tip, I'll try them out. Thanks for watching. ATB,Roger
Good to hear of the enjoyment Roger. A good vibe taken home. I did wonder how that kind of tent might hold up - did alright by the sounds amid a cold one and surprising snow. Well, you do go back with outward bounds. Good on you - many years of great memories. Yeah, a good trip up and down of course. Mark
Thanks Mark. Outward Bound was pretty amazing. As wel as the hiking we also sailed 14ft whaling cutters across the Firth of Morray, abseiled 150ft off a cliff into the sea and crewed an inshore rescue boat. Quite a month!
@@thewanderingforester A pleasure Roger. Hey, they're pretty good memories. That sailing sounds far out.
Great video,thanks 👍👍
Thanks for watching Ian
Being a gormless sod, I always make use of a list when packing my gear! The tent looks great Roger.....I'm a fan of twin porch trekking pole tents.
I'm a fan of being able to sit up in a tent and this is the first lightweight one that allows that properly. And yes, I should get a list - forgot fuel for the stove once! Thanks for the support, Roger
Smells a bit fishy doesn't it?
It was great, thank you! :)
May the Spork be with you.. someday haha :) One day you'll get to use it, but a list is always good. I still write a list of camp gear, cause I know I always forget the one thing I'm gonna need, but always the one thing I never think of. One time at a Cub Camp I brought everything except cutlery (so had to stop by a Tescos onroute just to purchase enough for all the kids)
Don't tell anyone but I've forgotten fuel for my stove once and also gone without my camera. Definitely need a list! Thanks for watching Mike, ATB.
That was a great test of the XMid! I'm glad to see it performed well for you.
Me too! Could have been pretty uncomfortable it it hadn't lived up to its billing. Thanks for watching, Roger
Love your chilled out videos. Tent looks great .
Cheers Johny.
You are bonkers!
Maybe.... But I do have the kit and experience to do it safely. 😀
Somewhere in this video I actually said it out loud "oh no, that IS crazy'. But isn't there a saying that there is no bad weather, only bad gear (/ preperation)?
I did my bit of camping and hiking, but pretty much always in good weather. Since I got into backpacking this year, this changed. I am doing a long distance trail in my area ("long".... The Netherlands is too tiny to call it that) and it got me so excited... When i went for a new pack a few months ago, i said to the guy i wanted it so small and light as possible, "Im not gonna walk in the cold or rainnnn" (dhuh). But I am looking for raingear now ;)
The snow, i cannot imagine me doing that, but it cerainly looks cool! And got me interested and thinking... maybe... one day?
Thanks for the review
No problem 👍
Great video
Thanks Colin.
X mid performed great IMO .would have been awful in my pokey little Terra Nova Laser Pulse .No cooking in that little thing.Glad I ve bought the X mid pro
It's not dangerous but it's frightening my favourite quote for now pal top bloke mate 😂😂😂😂 great vid buddy mines en route so you tubing the hell out of it and came across your vid thanks for the advice brother atb mate 😀👍❤
I know I’m usually out in those conditions but I’d be confident saying that this time it’s not my fault! 😂 Great vid, a few people would be jealous that you’ve got hold of that tent! ⛺️
I spent a long, long time trying to convince myself to go for the tent, hopefully it'll be a good investment. Thank for watching.
I’ve done 3 3 day trips to the Cairngorms and it is the best area I’ve been to in the UK so far for camping and walking. I live in Kent so Scotland is such a long way away. I’m not surprised that the Cairngorms converted you!
At one point when the kids were young we had a few holidays up there. At least once a week I would get myself up a Munro or two while the wife took the kids to see castles etc. Best walking ever! Thanks for watching.
Spot on roger👍, a good test for the xmid there, seem to handle it ok, obviously it isn’t a full on 4 tent, but for a 3 season it seems to do well, can’t wait to get out in mine again soon, my first impressions are very good, great video mate, look forward to your next one, atb Mick 👍
I'm not a full 4 season bloke so I think the tent will be OK. As I'm retired now I can wait for reasonable weather to get out. 😀 Thanks for watching.
Great adventure, liked & subbed
Thanks for the sub!
Nice test of the tent. It's a good mountain to pitch on as well, easy to get to, decent height and lots of flat pitches and short grass. I camped there a couple of times last year.
Totally agree, and very quiet as well considering Pen Y Fan and the hordes are just across the road. Thanks for watching. ATB, Roger
@@thewanderingforester it's very quiet given how many people park nearby, but as you said, 90% of people just want to walk Pen y Fan.
Love, love, love my x mid 1 person….
You and me both! ATB, Roger
Hi Roger just stumbled across your channel, love it. Great content and love how you come across. Lovely to see your video where you were down my neck of the woods (Llyn Y Fan Fach) Binging all your vids now. 😂 Top tip for you, pop your spork or spoon in with your pegs in the peg bag, you will never forget it again. 👍 ATB Lee.
Thanks so much! Being good Scout I always wash my pegs when I get home - so that spork tip would work.😂 Yeah Mynydd Du is really something - and pretty quiet as well i'll be going back there soon to check out Garreg Las. ATB ,Roger
@@thewanderingforester I think most folk clean their pegs don’t they? How you getting on with the X Mid? It looks like a cracking shelter.
Early days but liking the Xmid so far. The build quality is excellent. It's the headroom I like most of all.
@@thewanderingforester yeah headroom is definitely something to be considered. Must admit I’m considering the X Mid or the Duo Mid but in DCF. Look forward to your next adventure. Might catch you up the mountains some time 👍
Tent looked great, I’m debating the mid 1 and the mid pro 1 currently.
I've only used it the once so far but initially it does look very good. I'm not going out in weather worse than on that trip so pretty sure it will work for me. Thanks for watching, ATB, Roger
An enjoyable video a channel which is a first for me. It’s nice to see a more mature older statesman out and about I thought I was the only one! Would it be rude to ask your age?
Loved your insight into the XMid.
Looking forward to your next video
ATB
Not rude at all! 71 years early next month. Thanks for watching., ATB, Roger
Nice video. Just one thing is on my mind. You brought with you a very light tent but design to be for summer spring so you have to use a lot of warm cloths. When i have mine 4 season i can open when i want to or closed and then i need just a blazer its that warm.
The tent I have is good for the conditions I camp in here in the south of the UK. Maybe not in high mountains though! It is still quite cold and wet here at the moment, so warms clothes still needed. Thanks for watching.
Lovely Video, where have people managed to buy any Durston tents in the UK ?
You can only buy them from Durston in Canada although they are shipped from Kaviso in USA. So there is VAT and import duties to pay on them. Thanks for watching . All the best, Roger
Did a train up for the Cambrian Patrol in the Brecon Beacans, ending at Peni Fan and Fan Farne! We got snowed in in mid July!
That wouldn't surprise me, especially a few years ago. Thanks for watching. ATB, Roger
Ive just ordered this tentvaftercwatching this and a couple of orher videos of it in use in uk conditions . I noticed you seem to have a ground sheet there, is that the one durston supply or just a shert of plastic youre using,
Hi Andrew - the ground sheet in this video is one I made from Tyvek, It was about 2-3 inches smaller than the fly all round. Since then I bought the Durston ground sheet which just fits under the inner tent. I now use a square of Tyvek in the large end each vestibule to put my stuff on, usually bag /boots / wet stuff in one and food cookset etc in the other. Thanks for watching, I'm sure you'll enjoy the tent. ATB, Roger
I like the pullover shirt worn in the opening of your video. What is the brand? Great video!
The pullover is an Alpkit Yacutian. Thanks for watching. ATB, Roger
The first time I used my xmid 2p was in a snow storm ended up get 2foot of snow I can’t believe how well it did
My word! Good to know they'll cope with that but not sure I want to test it for myself 😀 Thanks for watching
Great Tent ⛺️ Roger (and definitely a great test of it m8t ❄️❄️⛄️🤠👍)
Really enjoyed the origin story up the Cairngorms 🏔️🏔️🏔️) sounds great and scary in equal measure 🤠👍
£20 burner just shows you don’t need a mortgage for kit (great buy Roger 👏)
Cracking camp ⛺️ on the beacons 🏔️🏔️🏔️
Best regards Simon 🤠👍
Really pleased with the X-Mid so far, looks like it will live up to its reputation. Enjoyed the camp though it was really cold! Thanks for watching. ATB, Roger
@@thewanderingforester always enjoy your content Rodger best regards 🙏🏼👍🏔️
You think you could survive this weather with the non-solid version?
I'm not sure which version to get.
Hmmm - interesting question. Personally I wouldn't because unless you had the fly bolted right down to the ground all round there would be too much cold air flowing through for comfort.
Hi Roger, thanks for the video. I am currently negotiating budgetary expenditure for the 2P. How did you attach the extra guy lines to the tent, please? I’m a bit paranoid about tents in winds and would like to know how best to attach extra.
There are small loops sewn into the seam in the middle of the sides with the doors in. Originally I tied a loop of bungy to that and tied the guy line to the bungy. Now I just thread the guy line through the loop twice and tied off. It's only to give some support to the side so shouldn't be overly tightened.
💪🤩
Hi Roger, great video! Where did you buy the tent from? I've been looking for a reliable lightweight trecking pole tent and this looks ideal. Thanks
Hi Christopher - the tent is from Durston Gear in Canada. (durstongear.com).
@@thewanderingforester Thanks. Ordered
How do you like yours? @@christopherevans326
7 months on, how are you finding the tent and would you recommend it? Keep up the good work!
Hi, yes still really liking the X-Mid 1p solid. It's important to pitch it correctly into the wind or the long side will really bow in, and it can be a bit tricky to get a really tight pitch on uneven ground, but other than that I have no concerns. We now also have the 2P solid for when Linda comes with me. Both great tents.
Nice video roger, i was impressed with the sound quality (ive struggled with just the iPhone & no external mike) - what are you filming with and what was the microphone setup i saw on your front lapel? Cheers
Reverse googled imaged the mike and worked out it was a Rode …
Yes, Rode Go wireless. I film with a GoPro Hero 9 using the Mediamod accessory to connect the mic. Thanks for watching. ATB
Hope Jonny Black was there pal ❤
Never seen a white inner layer. I just bought my tent and it has a black inner. I think the white looks much better. Is that inner from xmid or is it something custom??
My Xmid is the standard 1p "solid" which has a white inner with black mesh panels at the top of the doors. The other version of the 1p has a full black mesh inner I think?
@@thewanderingforester Ah I see I have the non-pro & non-solid version of the same tent. Thanks for the quick reply.
@@Doom_C Yes, the mesh is black, but liners are usually white i think, at least at Tarptent the solids or loose liners are white. I have only quite a small liner in my Tarptent Cloudburst 3, that you can attach to the top, but it really makes a difference in temperature :)
What poles you use to set up tent
We use or trekking poles. they are Black Diamond ones but almost any trekking poles will do. Thanks for watching.
Woudnt cooking inside the tent like that totally zap out all the oxygen?
Well, you shouldn't be cooking in the tent in the first place, mainly because the danger of the tent catching fire - they burn VERY quickly! But that said we all do it in bad weather. It's matter of minimising the risk really. So to get some airflow I had cleared some snow around the door to let air in and the tent vents above the doors were open to let it out . Otherwise I could have got a build up of carbon dioxide. Also I had to be very careful where the cooker was placed. Thanks for watching and commenting, Roger
Hi roger, certainly looks a cold one up there. Still a good test for the new tent in the wind and snow. It seems to have held up pretty well. 😊
Yeah it was really cold in the wind. Very happy with the tent so far. Thanks for watching, Roger
Such an enjoyable watch, thank you! Consider med subscribed!
Thanks Rachel. Glad you enjoyed it.
I had reservations on these pole tents on rough weather/wind. This video shows that they actually stand fairly strong. Do you feel confident the xmid will withstand stronger winds and rain?
Firstly thanks for watching. I am confident it will cope with rain I had a very hard 20 minute shower on Dartmoor that left the ground covered in puddles until it drained away. Nothing coming in at all. As for wind, I had 30mph gusts hitting the tent at 45 degrees to the corner and all that happened was some pushing in of the long side but not enough to worry about. Other than that absolutely solid. Hope that helps. Roger
I completely agree with Roger, I’ve had several XMids as Dan developed them. I took the original XMid 1P out on Dartmoor in a real hooley and it performed really well. I guyed the tent as recommended but added a second guy to each pole as I was not sure a single guy would suffice but with 40-50mph winds and rain the tent was really buffeted but stood up well. I also pegged the tent close to the ground to keep ingress to a minimum. I’m trying to justify an XMid 2P Pro to go even lighter.
Same bag, same tent, same poles.. 😊 sub from me pal. Nice job.
Thanks. Love the tent.
It’s all about trade offs. When you go ultra-lite you give up ultra-stability. X-Mids are your lites and Hilleberg Soulos are your stables. Unless I was ultra-lite backpacking, I wouldn’t touch an X-Mid.
The Soulo is 3 times the weight and 4 times the cost of my X-Mid Solid. Frankly if the weather is so bad that I need a Soulo I'm staying home😃😃. Thanks for taking the time to watch and comment.
A bit dangerous. You need to pitch off the top out of the wind because of snow.
Thanks for your concern. The snow hadn't been forecast that far south but I was wanting to know how the tent coped with winds at that strength. I was less than 30 minutes from my car on a hill that I know very well. So yes a bit risky, but considered.
Nice video. But why talk when you are eating.
Thanks for watching
That planetx stove is hard to find now
Yes - just checked, looks like they aren't selling it any more - or at the moment at least. Thanks for watching, all the best, Roger
Love your videos sir! The weather in your videos make mine seem awful tame 😂
They're not all like that! As I'm retired now I can usually wait for good weather but in this instance I wanted to see how the tent would cope. Thanks for watching, Roger
