I worked at a warehouse that had several "spotter tractors" like that. You didn't need CDLs to drive but the trucks weren't roadworthy anyway except for a couple. That's how a lot of guys got their CDLs. When they got good at moving trailers in the lot they only had the bookwork to do.

This was entertaining! I hauled one or two of the yard tractors when I was pulling the rgn for several years but never got to play with one. Last time I spotted trailers, I spent a night filling in with my road tractor at the Johnson Control plant in Cadiz, KY (late 90s... I think Johnson Control's auto seat parts has been long gone now). Before I moved to North Dakota to haul water and drill cuttings in the oilfield, I spent about ten years out at Ft. Campbell (a civilian transportation contract) and we had a bunch of 20-foot cans on ancient chassis that still had the old spring brakes... We regularly had to back up to aircraft on the flightline with daycabs that were just about as long as the trailers... lol. Now, pulling wind blades, there's often two of us steering... I don't miss the dry-van days, though.

Were they interested in fixing it?

Used to work for FedEx Ground as a switcher in Greenville,SC 15 years ago but they had a L9000 Ford daycab converted by adding on the hydraulic fifth wheel. The yard mule your using is nice compared to the one I used because I had to get out and pull the king pin release everytime. Yours releases from the inside. Good performance moving trailers with Yard Dog. The only better performance was a young woman driving for FedEx (with her dog as swamper) companion) finding 2 trailers and bogey dolly moving it around yard and physically rolling it into position a short distance and making the connection flawlessly with her first trailer and 2nd. The real skill was backing up her tag dolly into position behind her first trailer. IMPRESSIVE. I really like the variety of Your show.

Sure wish I had a yard tractor for some of the docks I had to go to sometimes. Backing around a corner into a dock was always fun, especially on the blind side. My highway tractor with the long wheelbase and sleeper would make for some tight situations. All I pulled were 53 footers and they are far easier to back up than a shorter one. If you can't parallel park one on the street then you haven't driven truck enough.

Why did you raise the landing gear? If the next hook is with a road tractor, (if the driver isn't paying attention) the king pin will ride over the fifth wheel. Hope its not heavy he will have fun winding gear up to get out from under it.

@@DirtPerfect it's true long trl way easier than the pup trl pulled both. After dark our yard dog had a 6-71 detroit in it neighbors made them put 2 mufflers on it didn't help 4 speed Allison automatic solid rear suspension it would do donuts on the black top what a blast

Depends on how much room you have.

@@bones6554 doesn't matter when the dispatcher or terminal tell you to go there you go get it to the dock. Even if involves locking trailer brakes to scoot it stright or maybe stretch the cab side flaring a little forward with the side of the trailer or turning around in a circle where the trailer tires stay in one spot while tractor makes a complete circle at a dead end street so you can back through there gate to the dock
