Scavenging a Poundland vibro-motor

- Some devices can be a very useful source of motors, and this one contains a low voltage and fairly low current motor that will potentially find use in solar ornaments and other projects.
Removing the motor was tricky. I ended up having to use a hacksaw to carefully cut a slot through the plastic casing to allow it to be parted enough with a flat-blade screwdriver to allow the motor to be extracted. If the tip is cut off it may allow the motor to be pushed out.
The eccentric weight came off the 1mm shaft very easily.

Had one of these in my bedside drawer years ago. Without my knowledge, my curious 12 year old son was rifling through my drawer and came across an object that vibrated when you pressed the button. Must be a massager, his innocent mind thought and he proceeded to give himself a little shoulder massage, before returning it to the drawer. Later on, he announced he had found the massager and although it was quite nice on his shoulders, it was a little inefficient with its small size. His father and I looked at each other in shock... before losing all self control and laughing for a solid couple of minutes. When we regained our composure, his father explained what it was... our son was devastated. And we have never let him forget it. He no longer goes through other peoples' drawers, either.

Crazy world we live in where it's easier to get an adult pleasure toy at short notice than it is a useful motor.
Small electric motors aren’t really useful by themselves, and they’re not usually seen as a replaceable component either.
That’s why they’re not something individuals purchase very much unless the motor is part of a device or they’re doing tinkering/prototyping as a lot of us here do.
Such a small shaft brings a lot of enjoyment 🤣

@@bigclivedotcomsurely they all know you by now as “the guy who buys literally anything electronic”?
I do wonder at the calibre of staff at Poundland - I bought some disposable box cutters before Christmas last year, and was asked for age confirmation. The fact that I'm 6'2", bald, beardy, and sixty, didn't seem to register. Showing my driving licence didn't help him much either, as he couldn't work out how old I must be if I was born in 1963...
Even with more innocent items, it's a common problem when you live alone. For example, if you buy a single carrot, they look at you like they're thinking "he's going to stick it up his arse". So now I always buy _two_ carrots. I can always eat the other one.
(Frankie Boyle joke, IIRC)

I loved how he has zero shame sharing that the shaft is around 1mm in girth. Don't worry, it's the length of the shaft that's important.
It's designed to be small and quiet for mobile use.
I saw a woman using one in a car in a parking lot when I was 20 years old and didn't know what was going on.
It’s got quite a narrow Shaft.
My personal experiences of Poundland motorised gadgets is that the motors fails before the batteries runs down so.... good luck with that.
For £2, if it gets you off once, it's not bad value...
I love how they make these “back massagers” so portable because everyone needs to keep one on them at all times?

"I have no intention of using this thing AGAIN"?
One would think, judging by the name of the store that this device would be unessary.
An improvement, normally the inner sleeve is well stuck down with a solvent weld, and yes I have salvaged lots of those motors, and often enough a rather interesting reduction gearbox as well, complete with a crank to make linear motion as well. Will say that, despite being sealed really well, they are also not waterproof, or liquid proof. Yes not really repairable, but I always had lots of those to use when young, and the failure modes on them invariably involved corroded connections, or open wires or switches. The rudimentary speed control, steel wire wound on a piece of wire insulation, was surprisingly robust, though again prone to poor contacts. They also did not like running on 12V from a used car battery, for some reason, lots of glowing steel, and melted plastic, and motors that turned into light emitting devices for a few fun seconds.
_"I always had lots of those to use when young"_

I have about 4 of these little motors. In my case, however, the counter-weights are so difficult to remove that they still remain on all 4. The weights appear to be several metal plates glued together in a stack, and are crimped onto the motor-shaft by what must be a beast, probably hydraulic in nature. I have not been able to free them despite my most destructive efforts.

It was originally designed for pussies so I'm sure Tiddles would love it.
Electronics and innuendo, what a combo! :-)
Your poor side cutters! 😶
Construction of that toy reminds me of the Oral-B Pulsar disposable electric toothbrush. Motor in the toothbrush is quite a bit smaller, 6mm OD X 12 mm long, but runs for about 3 months worth of thrice a day brushing on a AAA alkaline cell. The toothbrush is rather more expensive at $12 for a 2 pack (bought by accident about a year ago, non-motorized toothbrushes had been about $8 for a two pack, they look the same and I just figured inflation).
I really don’t know what those cheap vibrating toothbrushes are good for. As far as cleaning your teeth, they’re as effective as humming a tune while using a regular brush. And for other “personal” purposes they just seem a bit too underpowered. 😉
