Apparently the USA wanted $200 or £200 (not sure which ?) per Thompson and they wànted paying in gold as they thought we were going to lose against Germany. We could make a sten for fifteen shillings . If it was £200 not $200 we could make 266 stens for one Thompson ! Fifteen shillings in 1940 is £52 in todays money.
British troops used the STEN a lot but they didn't like it much. During D-Day British Glider commandos successfully seized the crucial Pegasus bridge leading to the landing beaches to prevent a German counter attack. There are two museums located nearby with a wealth of STEN guns in their exhibits the locals recovered from the river. Once the Brits killed or ran off the German garrison they seized the Germans' MP-40 submachine guns and chucked their own STEN guns into the river.
The Sten was the product of time , resource constraints and desperation. The best I can say about it is , it is better than no gun. The British are far better at banning guns than designing anything good quality and for troops to feel armed in wars. I take a Thompson any day rather than anything British made. That include even Bren guns which is not even their design. The Germans , just as desperate created the MG 42, something I believe is still beyond their capability today. You cannot put more than 3 Englishmen into a room and have them agree on anything.
Everyone should make their own plumber parts gun. Everyone.
See Luty SMG, built from hardware store components. Plans easily available on the internet. Know your laws if you want to build one.
@@1anthonybrowning what are laws?
I was going to mention Reinhaert Heydrich. But you did your research very well sir. 👍👍💪💪
Thank you for another great upload. Two of my favorite topics rolled into one. Firearms and history.
I think the STEN is the OG can't stop the signal. Betting out the Luty buy about 50 years.
Awesome Video
Great video

Love the 10 things you didn't know series.
The Sten Gun Being Originally Made In Britain Is Probably Why It Has The Magazine In A Strange Place.
mag is on the side so the gun could be aimed and fired if you were lying down on your belly.
It evolved directly from a German weapon used in WW1.
what I like about it is its slow rate of fire ... could be even slower but id accept it.
They stopped dropping weapons to the French resistance because they fought each other more than the Germans.
Exactly, when I drop a deuce... My turds fight for first come, first flush.
I've seen Spud Guns with more features!!
I've always heard that they were prone to jamming. Nevertheless, they were sure used an awful lot in World War II and even since.
had to keep the bolt clean, that was a problem since most of the moving parts were exposed.
@@marzsit9833 sounds reasonable!
I want a sputter gun!
