    It's really great that scale modeling has picked back up again! Waaay back when I first started, the big retailers would keep at least an entire isle of different types of kits. That was before Walmart started branching out to become a national retail chain itself. The first kit I ever put together, around 8 or so, was a 1/25th AMT(?) 1969 Roadrunner. No color, just glue. The kit itself was an off orange color, but it was close enough to my dad's car. From that time onward, I was hooked. Off and on, I guess I have been modeling for around 49 years. Great that the hobby really taken off again, because they're some really amazing kits out there and it doesn't seem to be dying like it was in the 90's. Nice video!!! just subscribed also

  • @BillHalliwell
    @BillHalliwell 2 года назад +2

    G'day Chis,
    Is that big, long dark blue box holding a kit of the Yamato? Is there a prize for the correct guess? Like, give me a yell next time you’re getting rid of any big kits... I’m addicted to them.
    Apart from your, shall we say, 'unique' fixation on F-14s, that was an enjoyable and most revealing tour. What struck me most was your collection of tools, and consumables, excluding your gallons of paint and associated fluids. You have, just about, every conceivable took, gadget, gizmo and assembly I could imagine; that can take care of nearly every form of model kit and scratch build concept out there. I’m deeply impressed.
    Ah, if I could only be so organised.
    You were right when you said there are no points for a big stash. At the moment, my stash is fighting for the same space I need to work on my bigger models. Apart from my A3 cutting mat and the small spaces immediately around it; every other flat surface has a stack of unbuilt kits; sitting there... some even reaching the ceiling! They sit there, mocking me and my tardiness.
    Room for a paint booth? Oh, how I wish. My hobby ‘studio’ is a converted tool shed on a concrete slab. It was pretty flash after the renovation but it only has one window of the old, style with a crank handle at the bottom that moves the window out a short distance, so it’s on a sharp angle. You might know the type.
    Try as I might I can’t find a paint booth exhaust pipe, or a modified, homemade version of one that will go through that stupid window.
    I had to shell out big bucks on a professional spray painter’s full face respirator; whack the air-con on full blast and let the spare paint vapour land where it will.
    But enough of my whining.
    Your set up has given me some great ideas that might lead to a significant change to my modelling ‘studio’.
    First off, I’ll be visiting our Tassie equivalent to Ikea, which is nothing like Ikea, to see if I can snag some of those cool, movable chests of draws. All my tools are amassed around my cutting mat at the moment which further restricts my work space for the large models I prefer.
    Your excellent video was not too long at all. Seeing your range of tools and supplies in detail has inspired me to purchase the important gear you’ve got that I should have as well.
    Thanks very much for taking the time to show us your ‘modelling paradise’!
    Cheers, and all the best, Bill

    • @beckersmodels
      @beckersmodels  2 года назад +1

      Thanks Bill, always glad to hear from you! And yes, its the 1/200 Nichimo Yamato with pretty much every aftermarket thing in there, but it will take a lot more than just bolting on new parts...I need to get a proper display case for it first though.
      The face respirator is a god-send, I use mine all the time, even with the paint booth fan going - no headaches now, just itchy ears from wearing it all the time.
      I'm glad you enjoyed the tour - I do intend on one day getting into proper scratchbuilding - i.e proper modelling - so a few more tools are still required (maybe a small lathe and mill, and a 3D printer).
      Cheers, Chris

      Hi Mark - the paint drawer inserts are just 40mm plastic L-shaped flashing you buy from the hardware store. I got the idea from Paul Budzik's channel - he uses metal flashing, but its the same. You start one off by duct taping it to the bottom of the drawer and then squeeze the rest in, the weight of the paint bottles holds it all in place. Some of these cabinets are not fully sealed either, hence the growth - I do clean the models and cupboards from time to time, and we've largely solved the flooding problem with extra drainage and a new retaining wall, but its one of the risks of living in the country...

      Ahh the 38T - there's a story behind that. I bought one years ago, built the tracks, got some extras for it...sort of lost interest....sold it - then Panda/Kittyhawk went belly up and I realised I should never have sold it - found one on ebay very very cheap (along with that Luchs), bought it...now its in my "collectable" stash. I may build it one day - there's a beautifully restored one in Cairns I've seen multiple times at that museum yes - but I'm keeping my "small" 1/16 kits as they are a great size for armor. Let me check I'm pretty sure it's 40mm angle. Plastic or steel works

      I use the Alex units as well. I tried one of the online hacks to get them open further but it involved prying the track open and cutting off half the bearing holder.
      The drawers opened more but sagged horribly. I found some replacement slides at a local store (the 17mm x 45mm) for $8 which extends about 6cm more than the factory Ikea track
      But, when I was installing them I found that if you don’t screw the drawer to the slider it works to extend fully.
      As a safety I an going to attach a safety wire from the cabinet back to the drawer back so it cant come all the way out by accident.
      Now the drawers open on the slider to one point then you can pull out fully and the extended part of the sliders glide in the channels on the sides of the drawer. I loaded the drawer full of Tamiya paint and pulled it to full extension and no sag at all.
      Not what they were designed for so at your own risk but they haven’t failed me yet.
      I did this with the regular Alex units not the wide one on casters so not sure if it would hold up with the extra width but easy enough to test.

    Diversity. No way would I store CA glue on it's side. To each his own. I've seen no cement as good as tube cement. Tamiya is a standard but, the bond is very fine & brittle. Love that paint draw with the slanted format. I too have over 100 kits as a stash. Part of the hobby is actually buying a kit. As many as I have to build I am still buying kits if they strike me just right.

      Thanks Daniel - yes the CA glue has been moved to a different spot - upright and most of it stored in the fridge - I haven't had any success with tube glue, but diversity as they say...cheers Chris

    Nice space, well supplied model room. But man, no way in hell I would store any liquids, and especially the volatiles, on their sides like this. You are a fire disaster waiting to happen, just absolutely nuts. “Oh it has been fine and I have never had a spill or anything bad happen “ …until it does. Don’t show your house insurance agent this video. Get those bottles upright and be safe. Crikey!

    • @beckersmodels
      @beckersmodels  2 года назад +1

      You're dead right - I've since transferred those enamels into the upright empty Tamiya jars and moved the bigger volatiles to the benchtop itself. I'll be posting photos as proof on Facebook shortly - you're not the first to mention my negligence here, so I need to get it right! Cheers, Chris
