  • "God demands that a Catholic king sit on the British throne"
Charles Edward Stuart is his name. An ambitious young man who wanted to claim the British throne for his father James Stuart, known as 'The Old Pretender', who had seen two previous attempts to seize the throne end in failure. Charles' last attempt was at the Battle of Culloden on 16th April 1746, when he was defeated by government forces, and consequently became a fugitive after fleeing the battle. The famous story is that Flora Macdonald answered his plea, smuggled him to the Isle of Skye, disguised him as her maid, and from there he made his way to France. His grandfather was King James II was deposed in the Glorious Revolution of 1688 and became the last catholic Monarch of England, Scotland, and Ireland.
It was nice to have a little reprisal of the role in S6! I am glad I held off editing him in the past, as I wanted to have the Flora Macdonald story included as well. It's only a quick video, but I've got plenty of Culloden videos uploaded over the past on this subject!

People with Bonnie Prince Charlie during the rebellion described him as stoic and cheerful. He wasn't known for being particularly religious, though his cause was wrapped up in religion. Contemporaries didn't consider him a fool. After the rebellion, he was celebrated across Europe for his bravery.

One of the many times in history where a king not yet ready was surrounded by men who refused to accept the truth. The amount of kings and princes who suffered from poor advice is immense

Charlie was actually supposed to be quite pleasant to his men, he did have a temper later when he took the drink. He had a great commander in Lord George Murray, but never listened to his advice often enough.

For a much kinder and poetic treatment of the Bonnie Prince I recommend David Niven's 1948 portrayal in "Bonnie Prince Charlie" by London Films. WWII had just ended and the British people were rediscovering their great heroes of the past, and not looking to mock and ridicule them like the Marxist writers of today.

Very odd and annoying that Outlander writers have portrayed him as a utter fool. I remember reading Carolly Erickson’s poignant and fascinating biography of Bonnie Prince Charlie and he certainly had no resemblance with the show’s character. There seems to be no historical evidence that he could have behaved like in the series.

I don't know why the creator (Diana Gabaldon) decided to depict Charlie as a "fool". My only theory is that she wanted to be seen as "edgy" and stand out against the largely romantic image of him depicted in so many other examples. Outlander is the only depiction of him I've seen through a negative light. How can he be a fool if he was so very close to victory? Only 120 miles from London which was largely evacuated. From what I've read, if not for false intelligence which allowed the English to regroup, chances are he would have taken back the throne. How would the world be different had he done so. Would there had even been an American Revolution? The inspiration behind Mo Ghile Mear, I'll always love him and think of him as a hero. Tragically though it might have ended.

      I don't know about that.
When I first saw the series I thought that he looked like a fool, almost like a caricature. But as the story progressed, I got the impression that while he looked and behaved like a fool, many of his actions showed that he actually wasn't.

Loved this video. First one I have seen of Andrew playing the bonnie Prince. A good reminder of his story in Outlander. It is a wonder the Scots ever forgive the English for what happened after Cullodon.

Yeah, I’d like to see more edits!
The armies were very actually mixed rather than it simply being English vs Scottish, both fought on either side. Believe it or not, there was more Scots fighting on the Government forces than the Jacobite ones! It’s more of a Catholic vs Protestant civil war.

@@RMFilmStudios yes I did know that but the government troops were ordered to kill and burn homes throughout the highlands without even checking if they were Jacobites. After that there were the clearances. Again many English and Scottish landlords to blame but with the blessing of the English crown.

Great tribute to Andrew Gower, his portrayal of Bonnie Prince Charlie was excellent, I imagine it was a difficult character to play, the part of a man who only listened to God! Claire’s quote was correct, (they have taken a fool & turned him into a hero) I thought the introduction of Flora MacDonald S6. was inspired to include that part of our history! brilliant summary with stirring background music 🎶 thank you 🙏 Robbie, 👏🥀🤗

Good morning Bernice. I agree, Andrew Gower did an excellent job portraying the Bonnie Prince. With her courageous action to save the prince, Flora McDonald has rightly found her place in the history books. I wonder if she would have done it if she had known that the prince had become addicted to alcohol after the failed invasion.
I hope everything is alright in the Sassenach corner. 😘

@@GalwayGirl1 Good morning Galway, I wonder if she would have! Mark me, I believe she was besotted with him, so probably would have, I also wonder how many times Andrew Gower uttered those famous words during the shooting of ‘Outlander’ I bet he is still using them to this day! 🥴 cheers from Sassenach corner 🥀🥰🤗

I love Outlander, but the inaccurate depiction of Bonnie Prince Charlie in the show is a testament to the success of the Hanoverian propaganda that was spun by the British Government during the uprising. The historical evidence clearly shows that the Prince was not, in any way, the man he was portrayed to be in Outlander. The way he is portrayed is the caricature that the Hanoverian Government wanted people to see him as.

Well, he was a prince, so not very good at taking gainsay easily brought up at rome's incessant intriguing and cabale, so he was accustomed (like any aristocrat at his time ((and evry politician since time immemorial)) to double-think and double-crossing a verytable "trimmer", who would enter a Wheeldoor behind and leave in front of you, a politicsl weasle,! After the 45' he would never cease to blame the highlanders how THEY had "betrayed" HIM! (When HE left them in the lurch after Culloden taking the war-chest with 30.000 £ with him) and yelling them : "evry man for himself and good luck!" A proper stuart prince, that one... (Yet I'm still a daft jacobite reenactor, there's more than Brigadoon, there"s the ghaeltaichd , the guid auld ways, clannadh..
