This bit of the song is so technical for 1981 I don't know if there were any commercial sequencers or MIDI were available,
if they were it would have cost a fortune. I was only 10 when I heard this.... Sunday night top 20 , it was something
special right off the bat, Passing Strangers has a section like this but more of an Arpeggio effect.
Ultravox were way ahead of anyone else in the Uk for synths for 1981.

This song truly heralded the arrival of the 1980's with it's futurism, new romantiscism, completely unique neon aesthetic and pioneering yet unforgettable music. This timeless classic, was for me the absolute apex of Ultravox and one of the most memorable tracks of a decade that I will remember as my most favourite period of time in my life. If I could wind back my Casio calculator watch, I would choose to live in the 1980's till the end of time. Vienna and Ultravox forever. Amen.

We walked in the cold air
Freezing breath on a window pane
    Lying and waiting
A man in the dark in a picture frame
    So mystic and soulful
A voice reaching out in a piercing cry
    It stays with you until
The feeling has gone, only you and I
    It means nothing to me
    This means nothing to me
    Oh, Vienna
    The music is weaving
    Haunting notes, pizzicato strings
    The rhythm is calling
Alone in the night as the daylight brings
    A cool, empty silence
The warmth of your hand and a cold grey sky
    It fades to the distance
The image has gone, only you and I
    It means nothing to me

I adore this song. I came upon it by accident in the 90s on a compilation 80s cd that I bought. It’s one of those songs that is hauntingly beautiful and stays with you. I’ll forget about it for a while and then someone plays it and it just comes flooding back. This was their best song hands down and video was actually pretty cool for 1981.

I always think they should play the Vienna song by ultravox when aeroplanes land in this incredible city. In my view this is quite simply one of the best pop songs of the 1980's. I especially like the instrumental bit with all the strings.
