- FINALLY.... after MANY comments and messages I'm finally making the tutorial video on how to play Walk Of Life by Mark Knopfler of Dire Straits. In this video, I go over how to use Knopfler's "claw-hammer" technique, as well as the actual playing of the song on the fret board... with very close up detailed video on both hands.
***This is my first tutorial video and obviously i haven't mastered the art of informative video... but I'm working on it! If any of you have suggestions or need any more help feel free to leave a comment or message me here on RUclips and I will be sure to get back to you!!
p.s i know the video quality sucks....but for some reason i had to lower the quality in order to make the video size small enough to upload. =\
Thank you for this video. There ARE beginners out there who love the basics explained slowly and with irreverence. Keep doing what you do!
He got the action he got the motion, oh yeah, the boy can play!
Dedication, devotion turnin all the night time into the day!
@@michaellaws25 Woo hoo hoo ;)
He do the song about the sweet lovin' women!
@@spiderbowels He do the walk, do the walk of life
@@Vendzor Yeah he do the walk of life ... ( sorry previous comment removed by accident}
learning to play knopfler is often so hard, so when one of his songs are doable like this it just makes me happy
You gave me the right push forward, thanx so much, you’re one of the few who while playing the song stops at the different parts and shows clearly and seperately the right and left hand techniques. Keep on going!
Yes. you have a gift for teaching. Just part way through watching I thought to myself “ I have to try this”. You break it down into understandable chunks. Love MK stuff but always found it difficult to see what the right hand was doing. Your nice camera angles and explanations really help. Keep up the good work and more MK please!
You have a gift. Congratulations. I'm brazilian, 50 years old, I don´t know so well english, but i understood your clear explanations. Good work.
The playing by ear is good! I thought your wonderful enthusiasm for sound captured me. You showed rhythm and a nice riff for your audience to learn and practice. Gordon Bennett, nearly 159000. people. A great first lesson. Thanks!
I used to play this back in the day when it came out and at the time we were doing 4 to 5 new songs every week and so I blindly played it Beach boyish as you described...I knew knoepfler used some finger technique to achieve that unique sound and so your tutorial helped me immensley...thank you
Best Walk Of Life guitar tutorial ever! keep teaching you got talent for that.
Not only a very good tutorial but the BEST showing how to play the riff. Congratulations ans thanks.
Brilliant video mate. Decided to learn it today and can play it perfectly before the video’s even over! Thanks
I am an old woman, im 67, i play a few instruments, so now, im going to learn to rock my electric guitar like nancy wilson. Thanks fir the help on one of my fav's.
I don't mean to get crazy on you, but you're one funny old bitty. Rock on Momma, rock on!
+Lin Burnett Are you an old woman who takes after your mother, your old man another child who's grown old? (john prine) I'm an old man who likewise plays and likes it when young guys with a good ear and time make these videos. Thanks for sharing and being encouraging.
67 isn't old! Keep on learning and challenging yourself and you never get old. :^)
Your lesson is so cool, I am your new subscriber. Keep going on.
I like the humour you put into the tutorial makes it a lot more enjoyable and entertaining !
Luke Skywalker, is that you!?
He's clearly using the Force, so must be :)
Hey you did a hell of a job, this is about as clear a explanation for Marks Claw Hammer technique I have seen on You Tube. ...Gonna help me immensely...
Thanks a lot for posting this! Thanks to you I can finally play this riff correctly. People will love you for this video.
I've only been playing guitar for a few months and you got me playing one of my favourite songs. I found the claw hammer thing quite easy to learn, maybe it's got something to do with me being a drummer lol .
Cheers from England
Great tutorial of the claw hammer, great explanation and easily understood , gonna try it on next jam session. Mark knofler has a great sound thanks to his fingers ( no pic sound at all ) thanks keep the vids going well done
This is one of,if not the best guitar lessons I've ever seen, good job. It helps that I have a strat.
Great first video. We’ll done, I really enjoyed the way you demonstrated how it done. Looking forward to seeing more of your work.
great stuff mate, your one of only two guys I`ve ever seen who can play it properly. The other one is a guy called Mark something or other
Omg! I'm 11 years too late but just thinking about learning this number. Your vid is most helpful and well explained. Just suggesting that improved lighting would be good, otherwise glad to be a new sub.....
Mr Knopfler would embrace anyone trying to learn his songs no matter what level they are at. he is an idol of mine but when you break some of his stuff down, theoretically, sometimes it can be simple, Take "Lady Writer" for example, A, B, C#m, solo in C#m pentatonic, Probably took him no time to write but sounds great.- coz of his chicken picking tech - nice job Tyler.
Paul Callaghan ...exactly
Simple, clear & useful explanation, like it. Thanks for the claw hammer technique. First time i heard it, Your Delivery is good . Had tried other method but not wasy to understand. Continue wat you were doin, Keep it up n post more of dire straits..
What’s with the fucking dislikes??? And bro, WHY THE FUCK DONT YOU HAVE MORE SUBS!? Your awesome, and keep doing those intros but beware not to make cringey jokes in future videos. Love dire straits, love you. Keep at it brother, and may the force be with you
Fantastic tutorial, really broke it down for those of us who play by ear
i really refresh this and your leading is perfect.
Best explanation on RUclips! Thank you so much!
atlast.. i found d right video..thanx a lot pal...ur good in teachin..im waitin 4 other tutorials of urs...:)):)
You are very humble, enthusiastic n sincere! You will go far! Thank you.
it's a really really good video; after years I've finally understood MK fingerstyle. Thanks!
Very clear except the two finger down is hard to get clear but it is one of the best tutorials on this technique.
Oh man this was incrediby helpful! Thank you so much!
You are great Tyler! I really enjoyed watching the video clip. In the past I have played three instruments, been in band and orchestra. I play and sing by hearing, which makes people nuts, but that's okay. The piano is on my list. It will be interesting. Good luck to you!
Bro you nailed it.
you know what? you're born to teach guitar. I love the fact the all the video long you never ever named a chord or a string! nevertheless you play it just like it's supposed to
good job, I've been trying to get better right hand technique for country / ragtime blues, claw hammer thing, I love the way knopflers rhythm boogies along, I've found this helpful.
Oh yea! The boy can play!
I just got an email about this update! I guess that means I am one of those subscribers =D
Well, the thing is, I don't have my guitar right now (I'm travelling) but I believe that was clear enough!
I will try that as soon as I go back home.
In my opinion one of the good thing is that you don't repeat yourself many times, which is good because if someone needs repetition they can always go back in the video but if one doesn't need the repetition the video gets boring. So yours is great! Tks
Very good for a fist try.
Tips for a great tutorial.
1) Start by playing the piece (no talking).
2) Then go into the details.
MyTwangyGuitar (youtube) has mastered the art of tutorials. He doesn't even say a word. That's a bit too impersonal. A few words and a bit of face is good. :)
Tyler I think you are spot on!!! Better lighting next time that's all ...Thanks Bro!!
Great tutorial! Always wondered how this song was played by Knopfler, thanks for de-mystifying it!!
simple and inspirational
Thanks for this amazing Mark Knopfler school!!!
You are good mate! Fun to listen to and we actually learned something cool!
@majoneski thanks a lot for your support and I'm soo glad that it helped you out! Have fun rockin some Dire Straits (;
Not the greatest camera quality but this was very helpful. Thank you so much!
thanks man I'm glad you liked my video!
Very nice! Thanks for posting both the full video, and now this tutorial :D
Thanks for the awesome tutorial...best on the web! Hope there's more to come!
@ogettings very close! you're forgetting one thing tho...It would go: Top (Thumb), Up (Pointer and MIddle), Down (Pointer and MIddle), Up (Pointer and MIddle) THEN Bottom (thumb), Up (Pointer and MIddle), Down (Pointer and MIddle), Up (Pointer and MIddle). Remember that 3rd pointer and middle part. thats all that was missing :)
Tyler that's FANTASTIC.
Brilliant well done🙂🙂🙂
Just get out there you are very talented 🙂
I have a question for you. When you make the transition from the first part of the song to the second one do you pluck the high E string on the 4th fret once or twice?
Very helpful, good job man....
Great tutorial, may the force be with you.
Good Job!!! Very informative and educational.
Very helpful. Thanks from a much older guy.
that is a great job, thank you very much. Maybe one of the best DS's song tutorial on the www.
What's that thing chord thing at 6:55??
rest of the video is freakin awesome!
I missed only a green lightsaber😆
Absolutely brilliant. May i ask you musical background? Musical prents? Don't worry about the quality of the video, like nobody worries about the crackle on their favorite record 👍

Don't let Steve Baughman catch you saying that technique is clawhammer. He won't be happy.
