Thanks to your video I successfully replaced my tundra 2006 4.7 V8 valve covers. I just wanted to add a little contribution: It is important to tighten the cover bolts with the right torque. The torque is 53 inch /pound. Don't use foot/pounds. Anyhow, foot pounds would be 4.41 foot /pounds. It is better to use an small torque wrench with inch/pounds. Another thing,..Peter make it look easy, but be prepared, it isn't that easy, not impossible for a DYS, but requires focus. Take pictures to know how things were and will go. Thanks for the DIY video. I was replacing the VC gaskets on my 99 Landcruiser and was stumped on the tabs holding in the tube seals and your video was exactly what I needed to learn how to replace the seals.

Those spark plug seals are a PITA..any mechanic who takes the valve cover apart again would probably laugh as they see the gouge marks all over the place lol

Dustin Quast mine lx470 is leaking engine oil Thru these valve gaskets as well, it helps to remind me those gaskets needs to be replaced, besides a little smell does it affect who the engines runs if I change the oil every 5k and checks the dip stick it’s not low?
You removed and resealed those half moons. So many people forget those. I did on a Toyota 3.4 V6 once. Eventually, they do leak engine oil. Great attention to detail and cleaning the mating surfaces on the head.

Just wanted to say thanks for the video. I just did both sides of my 2nd gen 07 4.7 tundra. Only difference is that it has some kind of secondary air injection valve on top of both sides of the spark plug areas. Made it a little more of a pain but doable. It seems to be leak free now. Your video was the best out there and very informative. Thanks again.

Thank you!!! ive been looking for a video like this for months. had to change my spark plugs a couple months bck,but broke a bolt inside where you place the spark plug cover tube and had to buy a new cover on ebay,but it came with cracked/broken grommets. I didn't know how to get grommet off without damaging the little metal flap holding the grommets..anyways thanks for video

Very informative. My '04 Sequoia with 277k is definitely ready for new valve cover gaskets. I watched the video to see if it is something I can tackle myself for you see I have tendonitis in my wrists and I cannot use them much for heavy work and I have back issues and it is not easy for me to get up into the engine compartment. My bolts were loose on my covers and I did manage to tighten them hoping that would help, but I can still smell oil burning sometimes when I stop from a drive and sniff in the hood area. For now, the smell is only on driver side. My mechanic said he would do the labor for $130.00 to change both sides so I may go ahead and let him do it since he has a garage and I do not. If I had a garage I think I would be more inclined to at least attempt it and I still may. At least now I know what all it entails which I didn't know before. Thanks for sharing.

Yes even if you can’t do this yourself you can definitely gauge how much or little work it is so you have a better judgment on prices and can sense if someone is ripping you off. That price sounds pretty fair just make sure they change out those spark plug seals too 👍🏼. Thank you again for your time and hope you heal up your hands and back so you can start wrenching!
This is a much more involved process on 2nd gen 4.7 tundras. There are a lot more hoses and emission equipment to take off to get to the valve covers. Still doable but takes an hour or two longer, and you will need a 12mm socket on some places.
Yes a little more tedious work to get to the covers but definitely doable! Thanks for watching

well, just an update, just finished installing the new gaskets and o rings. this video was very helpful. those o rings were freaking hard to get out, but i manage to do it. Just wanted to say, thank you for your video, and keep up the great work. Many blessings
Great video. I would recommend to use a torque wrench and torque all bolts to the correct specs on cover. I believe 53 in-lbs is the correct torque.

A torque wrench with 1/4" drive unless you hav a Torque wrench that can be set @ 4.7 ft. lbs
53 is way too high. Should be no more than 15

OEM comes individually. Aftermarket usually comes in a set. Don't skimp on these things. Always use Toyota parts for gaskets and seals.

I noticewd that this vehicle didn't have the air pumps on each valve cover, covering cylinder #5 & 6.
My 2007 Tundra 4.7L has them and it adds a little to the complexity of the job. Wondering how you handle removing them to get the cover off?

Great video, I plan to do this tomorrow afternoon on my 4.7 both sides. Did you not use a torque wrench to properly install the bolts back on the valve cover??
No I don’t use torque wrenches for these. I do these so often and i can tell when to stop. I position my hand as close to the top of the ratchet and only use my wrist to turn it. Snug tight like that I can get about 4-7 ft lbs. I think those bolts are suppose to be 52 inch pounds which is a little over 4 ft lbs. I’ve been full time wrenching as for over 14 years

i do a ton of these all the time and normal 10mm bolts are mostly 6-8 ft lbs only and hand tight is all it really needs. i have a method i use on most of them. for my method i will grip my ratchet ( 1/4 or 3/8) right above and around the head area and use one hand to tighten. i am usually aroun 8 ft lbs give or take. i have never broken any bolts or had them too loose. =)
BTW what is the correcy torque?
53 in/lbs and not to be mistaken for ft/lbs

Very good video....im going to be doing a full blown timing belt , water pump replacement and also plan to do the cam seals. I have the 05 Tundra VVTi (164k not sure if belt ever replaced). Cam seals should be a treat. Watched many videos looking for consistent procedures. And yep....i know about the crank advance (50 degree) on the belt install and the dot line up/ service bolt install on exhaust cams. Any other tips like with the A/C compresser?
Cam seals on the vvti engine is a little different to replace. You actually need to disassemble your valve train and cam off to change the cam seal. I’ve advised many clients to not replace it because of cost. I’ve serviced engines with 200k miles at the second TB interval with those seals not leaking still
@@RevvedUpKnowledge i will definitely inspect the seals before making the decision. I do know about locking the scissor gear on the intake cam with a set screw and lining up the dots.... I will be very cautious. Thanks again for your reply .
Thanks for watching and commenting. Just be cautious and take pictures before you take off things that way you can refer to your pictures. Bagging and labeling the bolts help.

When tightening the screws, will they began to stop if I do the hand tight. Or do I need to stop when I start to feel resistance. My torque wrench isn’t proper

Your awesome! Thank you for the love! I believe these plugs are platinum tipped and should be replaced every 60k mile intervals. I just updated the list in the description with the add of the silicone and spark plugs. Thank you again

no need for draining of the oil. I believed i used the oem Toyota black silicone. i tend to use those or Hondabond

That converts to basically 5ft lbs
Engine v6 is huge fortune to replace gasket cover without DYI.
