And that's "Awl folks" Thanks Dan
New bush drinking game every time Dan says Awl we take a swig of beer 🍻😜😂😂😂
Awl-though! Awl the time! Awl-righty then!
This is exactly what I was looking for.
I have a tool on my surge that I had no idea what it was for.
Great information man. Thank you
Awlrighty then. Here's another idea. Sharpen with a grinder or sander (slowly as to not change the hardness) an old chainsaw file to a point, (after you shorten it to taste) and mount it in a shortened file handle (save the other half). On the squared end (the part that fits in the handle) grind that tip to flat point. You can flip it end to end for desired effect and use the file part to ream things, even metal. A three in one tool. (Kids, DONT POKE YOUR EYE OUT!) After drilling the center, put the cut off end of your handle on the other end to help it pack safely!
Coalcracker, please feel free to share this idea if you like.
I've got something similar to your 3 sided awl, it's called a japanese gimlet, and they are used for woodworking to drill small holes (usually to pre-drill holes for nails or pegs). They work extremely well, but instead of a short handle like the one you showed, the handle is round like a dowel and about 8-10 inches long. It's also tapered, so it becomes thicker as it gets down to where the awl is mounted. You use it by spinning it like a hand drill in fire making. The taper in the handle really seems to work good because it allows you to exert some downward pressure.
The ones with the edges are really reamers not awls. Also great for drilling holes in sticks and branches to put through cordage. Use these for making swedish "ice handles" (don't know the correct term) which are made for pulling you back onto ice after you broke through while ice fishing or what ever situation in which you need to enter frozen streams or lakes. Take a 1"-1,5" thick branche, cut it into two parts (each 4-5" long), drill a hole with a reamer on one end and put through a 12" long cord, sharpen the other ends to a point or drive a nail onto it and hang it around your neck. When you break through the ice, you can pull yourself out relatively easy with a lot of traction, which you would never have when only using your hands.
Put that in one of your videos Coalcracker!
I took a large old Square nail, sharpen the point and stick it in my felt hat so I always have it. It is four-sided not three, but works great!
Awlfully nice video Dan. You got right to the point.
I have the one on Swiss army knife. its has a very sharp blade and a hole so you can pull a thread back with it.
Awl I know is Dans videos never go out of style.
There is also a diamond awl blade that is more flat! It goes through leather the easiest! Great video as always!
Careful when using flat cuts in leather; if you're sewing, don't tension against the points of your hole or it will slowly spread and weaken the stitch over time. This of course depends on the thickness of the leather, how much that matters.
AronFigaro I have my own leather shop, but thanks!
Excellent vid as always, Great points you touched on Dan (pun intended) 😳😜😂
Great advice, I carry one of each in my pack.
Its good to be ready for any and awl situations when in the wilderness
Good information dan
Thanks for telling us all, about all your know, on awls. LOL
Thanks, Dan,, for awl the information. 😉
Great subject!
nice hat !!!!!!! Thanks for another great video
Great info on the three-sided awl! I have so far only used a round awl. Thanks for opening my eyes!
Great idea brother! I like the smawl one also and feel like if I had a three sided one I would use it awl the time ; )
Thanks for sharing,
Cheers!
Good stuff and good point on triangle vs round awls. More than just the bush, this is a good piece of advice for a beginning leatherworker like myself, when NOT to use the triangle awl. A circular cut under tension will not spread as much as a triangular cut, which will weaken over time and spread out at the points. Some idiots will teach you to use a triangular awl for sewing leather - it's a trap! Learned that the hard way. :)
Thanks for the tip on icepicks! Ima make me some more awls.
Awl for one and one for awl!
As always, great tips, well explained and very useful. Thanks.
I could see myself using an awl more for various other pokey jobs rather than its intended punching purpose.
When you make an awl be sure to polish very
Fine the more it is polished the easier it is to use
I learn alot from your videos and enjoy them.
I have one in my sewing kit and one on my SAK... great video Dan
I cheat, I just carry my multi-tool. *Awl Right, Awl Right, Awl Right!*
Thx Dan!
I'll keep my eyes open for an ice pick now!
I use this awl awl the time!
Its awl good.
I have an awl that has a choke on it like a drill I can put small drill bits in it and I use that drill through bark sometimes leather and other things like that I also have bits like normal awls triangle awls and drill bits without needing to carry separate awls
I’m going awl in for an awl.
For those of us with the awl jokes,
they were awl ful.....lol.
Awl the puns and play on words have me awl giggly...😁
Yes, my father was a shoe cobbler, and I clearly remember the day he said, " One day, my son, this awl will be yours."
I like how u give these videos ur awl.
Bush drinking tip: use awl to shotgun a beer can. Seriously its the only way to stomach coors lite
Three sided for birch bark craft work.
Thank you for another awl good video! How sick will you be by awl the awl pus by question Wednesday? Stay safe ATB. Nigel
Y-Awl should get an Awl. Then you'll be Awl-right for Awl of the things to come.
CoalCracker Hey you gonna bring back old school hats? I will buy one if you got any
I have an old three sided steel all. It’s the length of a hammer and the same shape as a ABS tent stake(Y stake?), with a wooden handle. I’m thinking it will work nicely to “pre-drill” my tent pegs holes. Did I explain it well enough that you might have an idea what the tool was made for?
Man, way too many awl puns in here.
But, awls are really fantastic and useful. I use one in woodworking as a way to mark my work, instead of using a knife or pencil. Also can be used for traditional bookbinding, leatherwork, cloth work, etc. It's one of the most generally useful tools around. And you can use it in conjunction with a mallet, if you have to punch a hole through thicker material, or many layers of material.
Are they only for poking holes in things. And if so. Couldn't you just use something on a multi tool?
Small awl or smawl ;)
Awl or nothing. Since I don't have the level of gear that you do and not as self-sufficient in woodcraft/Bushcraft, I edc my trusty SAK Hiker w/awl.
I carry an icepick
If it has sharpened sides wouldn't it technically be a reamer? Just curious.
What do you use to cover the tips of your awls?
Some people use cork, but I've found that they tend to break and chip loose over time.
Is there a brand of awl you would recommend over others?
How are you packing that tool without it poking holes in you or your pack? Why not just use a Swiss Army knife with an awl?
Eugene McGloin I have plastic end caps on my awls and blanket pins. A heat Gun and small piece of pvc pipe can fashion these for you. As far as uses, making peg holes, whether for making primitive traps or binding two poles together. They can also work as small punches for leather. I find it safer to punch holes through hides to be hung and stretched than using a knife. Awls are very useful tools that take up very little space and don't add much weight to the pack. Most swiss army knife awls are folded into the knife. While punching a hole, there's always the risk of the awl closing back into the knife, pinching or even possibly cutting a finger.
A wine cork works great for the point! I was thinking the same, Swiss Army knife or a multi tool!
Sam, seems like a lot of work, especially for someone who doesn’t own a heat gun. I used to make a “sheath” for my awl out of either electrical or duct tape when I worked as a carpenter/contractor. Worked okay in a tool bag but, never in my pocket and I wouldn’t want to schlep that around in a pack. Dunno, I never had a Swiss Army awl fold on my fingers while pushing hard and twisting one. Muscle memory thing, I guess.
What do you use it for? You say you use it more than we think.... but what for???
What are your thoughts on the 'awl' that come with multi-tools?
I have a Letherman and a SAK that both have tools labeled as 'awl' but don't look anything like either style you have shown.
Opinions on a sewing awl?
that's all?
