I have to agree with you sir! an awl has been a very useful tool for milenia and in my kit for quite a while! I too forge my own! Thanks for a great lesson as always! God bless!
Very good Dave!
Very useful tool! I only have the one on my Swiss Army Knife. The Champ.
Excellent rendition of a much unheralded and useful tool. Thank you. (Perhaps some application videos now?)
that was real nice work Dave
loved the video as always.
No doubt , an awl is a very useful implement , and in a pinch makes a great self defense weapon as well !
Nice. Really good stuff.
great tool and info.
Bushcraft - woodcraft 'dichotomy' is the word you were looking for.
That was an AWLfull video. Boom! Seriously, great videos David
Good stuff!
Great work keep it coming
Starting at 10:00 ..... a thing of simple beauty wrought by the hands of man.
hi Dave I just watched this great video and had a idea for you to look into and maybe a future video. what I was thinking of was gimlet for drilling wood, leather, and in my opinion is multi use tool that is light weight for you pack or camp kit just a idea
One size fits awl?
To quote the movie Master and Commander, "He, who would pick a pun would pick a pocket".
nice one brother
what an awesome video title
Cool video. Would a T-handle awl be of any use? Like an auger handle style. I imagine you could really bear down on it when boring holes, but it might be difficult to mount it in a handle in a way that would be robust enough?
Is that awl 🤓
Great! You might whittle the end of your wood sheath so it will slide in the tool roll easier...
Nice...!!
maybe beside the knife , the most important tool . thank you good video
great vis
I just got a Kamp King knife for my go bag, mainly because it has an awl. I'm no survival expert, but I figure an awl is almost as necessary as an axe or fix blade knife.
Other people use your shop? ... fella at the end of video crafting some sort of hand ax or pack ax head. That's really nice of you Dave.
Awl these puns are making me sick
your the best
Dave great idea. .. Dave this something simple that I can create my question is creating one with a big nail would it as effective for long-term use.?
Elvin A Millan you could use an old chisel, that way it's high carbon steel. But I'm sure a big nail could work
Thanks for the information. ..I don't have an old Chisel but I got a couple big old American nails I think I will start this project tomorrow. ..
Elvin A Millan u might have to sharpen it up once in a while, I'm assuming nails are mild steel
Elvin A Millan yes a nail will work ,if a 6000 year old one was made from copper then a harder metal such as a nail should do just fine !
Surely you can use a nail, it just won't hold edge (point) that well and may bend if you use it for boring holes and pry sideways. Other than that, it's still gonna provide good service. But for a true long-term tool, it's worth looking for a better steel item to start with. Worn tools, springs, parts of machines that need to be a little tough....for example, I've made several good awls from the rod that supports car hood when you open it.
Just a thought a feller could have heat treated that and made it multi purpose and used it as a striker as well
Jest use a chainsaw file take the handle off then you got your self a multi tool
or grind down an old skrewdriver
looks like a widow maker in the back
You are probably my most favorite person to watch forge on RUclips! I love to blacksmith for the same concept of you, self sufficiency. For someone younger and thinking about having a homestead/farmstead hobby and way of life, what is your advice on starting out? Thanks
