hi Dave I just watched this great video and had a idea for you to look into and maybe a future video. what I was thinking of was gimlet for drilling wood, leather, and in my opinion is multi use tool that is light weight for you pack or camp kit just a idea

Cool video. Would a T-handle awl be of any use? Like an auger handle style. I imagine you could really bear down on it when boring holes, but it might be difficult to mount it in a handle in a way that would be robust enough?

I just got a Kamp King knife for my go bag, mainly because it has an awl. I'm no survival expert, but I figure an awl is almost as necessary as an axe or fix blade knife.
Other people use your shop? ... fella at the end of video crafting some sort of hand ax or pack ax head. That's really nice of you Dave.

Elvin A Millan you could use an old chisel, that way it's high carbon steel. But I'm sure a big nail could work

Elvin A Millan yes a nail will work ,if a 6000 year old one was made from copper then a harder metal such as a nail should do just fine !
Surely you can use a nail, it just won't hold edge (point) that well and may bend if you use it for boring holes and pry sideways. Other than that, it's still gonna provide good service. But for a true long-term tool, it's worth looking for a better steel item to start with. Worn tools, springs, parts of machines that need to be a little tough....for example, I've made several good awls from the rod that supports car hood when you open it.
Just a thought a feller could have heat treated that and made it multi purpose and used it as a striker as well
Jest use a chainsaw file take the handle off then you got your self a multi tool
or grind down an old skrewdriver

so some hunter can get me as many deer hides as i want but they will be skinned and ill get them late the next day to flesh so can these be preserved or am i wasting my time please reply soon
If they are kept cool they will be fine
